She has worked on deals with major clients, including HBO, Warner/Chappell, Discovery, Telemundo, Sony, Columbia, and Sub Pop. That's simply not the truth. In fact, it's the opposite. As an artist, you should be thinking about a lot of angles when you're working on music. Who's collecting the royalties for your collaboration? What's the royalty split? Who federally owns the copyright? Davey and I go through the entire songwriting process, the legal barriers along the way, and what you can do to keep your works of art federally protected and the royalty payments coming in.Links mentioned in this episode:Copyright Law: Navigating the songwriting process and staying out of legal trouble (EDM.com Feature)Meehle and JayTop 5 misconceptions about music copyrightsWhat is music licensing and why is it important for my career as an artist?Trademarks: What are they and why musicians and artists should careHarry Fox AgencySoundExchangeCopyright.govQuick links:3:20: Is there any type of legal protection during the planning phase of the songwriting process?6:00: Going back and forth with projects -- you still have rights to the song even though you only added an eight-bar loop7:15: What is a split sheet and why are they important?8:34: Dividing up who's paying for the studio time, booking it, and having friends in the studio12:45: Can I use a limited duration of someone else's sample/song in my song?
