She has served as Poet in Residence at Fordham University and as a member of the undergraduate and graduate creative writing faculty at Hofstra University, where she edited the digital literary magazine AMP. Praise for Ecotones:"The personal. The citational. The chronicle. All the “conquistadorial spillage….” In Ecotones, Janet Kaplan pieces these verging environs. The writing is transitional; contemplative. We are reminded everywhere of how edges touch, how language is code. The poet has flipped the surface of the page to better show us a map of our disconsolate displacements. “Motion is the translation of a body from the place it occupies to another place,” writes Euler; Janet Kaplan: “and I, bit player, confessor-chronicler, / will write it.” "- Edric Mesmer, author of Fawning and series editor of Among the NeighborsPraise for Dreamlife of a Philanthropist“…The poems here hover above their own titles, this dreamlife of the poem more important than the poem itself, a place in which thinking is not yet thought, intent not yet conclusive, not language even as a form of life, but language in the process of making that life possible. It isn't a mental life; it's too real for that easy confine. Let's just call it the necessary life – a life of serious play.” - Dan Beachy-Quick
Have you heard of an ecotone before? An ecotone is a transition area between two adjacent and different patches of landscape, such as forest and grassland.Ecotones do not simply represent a boundary or an edge; the concept of an ecotone assumes the existence of active interaction between two or more ecosystems with properties that do not exist in either of the adjacent ecosystems. An ecotone is a meeting place that creates something entirely distinct from either side of the boundary. In essence, 1 + 1 = 3.And this third space is what I want us to explore in this month's meditation series.Edges, ecotones and third spaces are places of life, energy & growth; they are places of speciation - of creation and evolution.Third spaces are invitations into expansion - into knowing ourselves, our lands, and our actions in a way that wouldn't be possible if we only resided on one side of the edge.Join me for today's discussion of ecotones both within ourselves and in the outside world. Thank you to Gordon Hempton for the use of the incredible soundscape in today's guided meditation. Recorded in North Carolina at Joyce Kilmer National Forest, the Cherokee were some of the first people to hear the sounds of this hardwood forest.Sign up for my newsletter at https://merylarnett.substack.com/ to receive free mini meditations each week, creative musings, and more.Make a donation or learn more about my free offerings and live classes by visiting merylarnett.cominstagram.com/merylarnettyoutube.com/@themindfulminutepodcastThank you to Brianna Nielsen for production and editing support. Ecotones are the transitional areas between two distinct ecosystems. These are fascinating and dynamic spaces where unique phenomena can occur. Every transition zone is created and organized by God for our absolute best. The question then becomes how do we respond so that our life experiences the power of an ecotone instead of a dead zone? This week we look at examples in scripture of what transition can bring, and what our response to it should be. Brad Hobbs Exodus 14-18, Acts 1 & 2
Sit back, relax, and shrink yourself down to a microscopic level so you can skitter about on the forest floor – that's right, we're talking, "Ecotones," the latest ambient jazz record from pianist/synthman Jarrett Purdy & guitarist Dan Padley. If you're looking to learn about the history of the Byzantine Empire, this is not the podcast for you. Rad!

While in the Atlanta area, we were happy to bring the Ecotones from the University of Georgia into the mobile studio. They talk about being a mission-driven a cappella group, and how that reflects itself in what they do and how they do it. We also hear them sing some songs for us. Recorded in late 2016.
