Christadelphians Talk
Thought for June 17th. “SEE WHAT KIND OF LOVE”

Christadelphians Talk

Our chapter in the First Epistle of John (Ch. 3) starts with the above words!  Love comes in different “kinds” and fully genuine love is proved by the actions that follow.   When we get to v.18 we read, “let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”   That kind of love should create a reaction in those who benefit from it.  Look at and see how meaningful is the rest of that quotation, we read, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”    This is an extra dimension to the familiar statement that “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” [John 3 v.16]  God sees those who really believe as being  “children of God”. Those who are children of the world have little or no time for those who are living with the conviction they are “children of God”. But how wonderful when there are exceptions when people are genuinely influenced and attracted by the godly lives they see in others.  Look at the point John made in v.2, “The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”   Oh, but those who put him to death knew him!  Yes, but they only knew him in a physical sense, they saw him as a rival, their minds were fixed on themselves, their motives were totally self-centred, their minds were blinded because of their own sense of self importance.   Those who really think, in all humility, of the wonder of being known by God and becoming his children, develop a totally different mind-set in the way they think.  Just 4 days ago we read these words in Peter, “Humble yourselves therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, “YET IT WAS THE WILL OF THE LORD”” [1 Peter 5 v.6,7].  Those who develop the ability to see the kind of love that God has for those who serve him will, in all humility, develop a wonderful relationship with their Creator. Our first reading today (Judges 19) reveals a totally contrasting situation! It is an ugly story of human depravity.  Why does the Bible contain such chapters?  Because it is an honest record of the depravity of human life – and how God deals with it – as well as the wonder of spiritual life and of our potential to have a total relationship with God as his children.  We love God, but let us be sure it is the right “kind of love”!  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christadelphians-talk/message

Label: Philles/Coll. 3210Year: 1963Condition: M-Price: $12.00The A side was originally released on Philles 111. However, the B side of this limited-edition release on Collectables was never released, before or since, on vinyl or CD. (That's why I don't tag this 45 as a reissue.) I had a bit of a jaw-dropping moment when listening to it, for as a huge fan of Spector's Philles productions, it was like discovering a long lost, never released Beatles studio recording. For those who aren't already fans of Darlene Love, she was, in the view of many, the best singer in Phil Spector's stable of talented girl-group vocalists. Aside from the handful of classics she released under her own name, she also sang lead vocals on the Crystals' "He's a Rebel" as well as on "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," a hit for Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans. You'll notice that Dave Marsh places two of her 3 chart singles in his list of the 1001 greatest singles of all time ?? this one and "Wait Til My Bobby Gets Home." In addition to these, Love hit Billboard's Hot 100 with the amazing "A Fine Fine Boy." But somehow, "Strange Kind of Love" must have got lost on one of the studio tapes, only emerging much later. This Collectables release is the first (and only) appearance of the song on 45 rpm vinyl.Incidentally, the tune's writers (who actually recorded on their own under various names, including the Trade Winds) have credits to numerous classic 1960s hits, including "New York's A Lonely Town," "Do I Love You?" by the Ronettes, and "Soldier Baby" by Candy & the Kisses.

Within our web of vows that help us maintain what we believe is possible in our relationship, gambling everything for the love we want is at the center. In this episode, we unpack what that means for us and how we work to bring forth every aspect of ourselves, even in challenging or uncomfortable conversations. Unless we take a real stand for the kind of relationship we desire, and then be willing to put everything on the table to give our relationship a chance to live into that stand, we are going to compromise or settle in an unfulfilling partnership.Although we have a deep commitment to addressing ruptures and impact, we're not immune to misunderstandings. There's a level of consciousness inside our relationship where we can recognize the filters that we have for each other. These assumptions and automations not only limit the possibility for deeper connections, and they also have the potential to intensify resentments and wounds. We share five practices that help us to lay our vulnerability on the table and work through tension. In our conversation, we break down what these five tools are and how they can help you and your partner co-create solutions. Join us as we look at these techniques in action and discuss ways to approach edgy topics within your relationship. Summary: You're out of this world, listener! Join Holly and Devin today as they discuss books set in or featuring outer space. Devin has always been obsessed with space exploration and studied it in college, whereas Holly only really wants to read about this subject in her books. Whether you have a passion for astronomy or astrology, whether you dream of flying to the moon or are glad your feet are firmly planted on earth, these books have something for you!  Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:41): Devin discussed A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young, a unique romance following event planner Hallie Goodman and NASA astronaut Christopher Ortiz as they orbit each other and then collide. After discovering his video diaries from the ISS (International Space Station), Hallie develops a crush on the charismatic astronaut and starts to send her own recordings to his discontinued NASA email address. Little does she know, though, that Chris is watching them and developing a crush of his own. Devin's key takeaways were: Not only is the book full of videos where Chris describes what it's like to live on the ISS, but there's metaphorical space for better and worse laced throughout this novel. Chris works for NASA and did 5 months in space, but both he and Hallie struggle with space, taking up more of it in their lives and not letting it get in the way of their fledgling romance. Both protagonists have a lot of trauma and a lot of current struggles with their families, especially their parents. This informs how they show up in their relationship and how they react to various triggers. A lot of the book involves the repair or boundary setting of Hallie and Chris with their families.  Chris, having dated a socialite named Darcy and Hallie who is consistently wrapped up in the world through her work have to fight for their positions in society and for authenticity in their relationships. Even Hallie's dad struggles with posturing and connection when he buys a gigantic house to make his ex jealous. The Dagger (23:48): Holly discussed Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty, book one in the Midsolar Murders series and a novel following Mallory Viridian, a human living on the space station Eternity amongst various species of aliens. Having left earth after realizing that people connected to her are murdered at an alarming rate, Mallory's existence on Eternity is peaceful… until a shuttle full of humans comes to the station and the bodies begin to pile up again. Holly's key takeaways were: One of the best aspects of the book was the various aliens on board, ranging from the Gneiss who are creatures made of living rock to the Sundry, an insect species similar to wasps who have a hive mind and can only communicate with you if three or more of them gather together.  The murder mystery component of the story felt misleading - there wasn't so much the real focus of this story and didn't come together in a way that felt satisfying; there was some confusion on the core thrust of the plot and what the reader should be focused on.  Ultimately, this book had a lot of promise and intriguing world building of alien species cohabitating in a sentient space station, but the execution felt chaotic and messy. If you're looking for a sci-fi thriller with a unique twist, though, check out this series.  Hot On the Shelf (47:34): Holly: Shark Heart: A Love Story by Emily Habeck Devin: How You Get the Girl by Anita Kelly What's Making Our Hearts Race (50:52): Holly: Dune Part 2 Devin: Bread baking weekly   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

How wide, long, deep, and high is God's love? God's love is immeasurable, with four dimensions depicted not just as an emotion but also as a guiding principle for actions and relationships. It is rooted deeply in God's nature and manifested through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. This sacrifice offers forgiveness and redemption to all humanity. Understanding and experiencing God's love transforms how we view ourselves and others, leading to a life of compassion, forgiveness, and self-sacrifice.

God is love. In order to truly love and understand love, you must be born again, born of God, and have a personal relationship with God. This message focuses on the significance of God's love, as written in the book of Ephesians. Duane emphasizes the importance of the older generation teaching the younger generation to recognize and distinguish divine love from mere attraction or lust. It's crucial to understand that the world's definition of love differs from God's definition, and this understanding is essential to our faith because our faith works through love.

This slightly untraditional Valentine's Day episode is as heart-challenging as it gets. I had the incredible opportunity to speak with Delilah, long-time radio host, who I grew up listening to from childhood into my adult years. She speaks about the only kind of love that Jesus showed in His lifetime: unconditional love.  As an adoptive mom of twelve children, Delilah touches on topics that challenge the way that we unconditionally love: how we love on the widows and the orphans, the way we share and gather stories, the way we speak to our children, how we love Christians, sinners and unbelievers, and how we connect in friendship and in community. As Delilah says, "The only kind of love that exists is unconditional love".  Happy Valentine's Day!

Title: Choosing Jesus' Kind of Love Series: Expanding Your Circle of Love Text: Luke 6:31-34 Date: 1/21/24 What kind of love identifies us with Jesus? This love is summarized in the Golden Rule. Jesus' kind of love is… Unconditional. Don't base your love on their response or their reception. Others-centered. Don't restrict your love to the lovable. Proactive. Don't wait for the right opportunity; make it your lifestyle. Reflective. Ask yourself… “What would it look like to love this person well?” This love is for all people, including “those who love you.” Loving those who love you isn't extra credit, it's an expectation. Our love is seen most clearly in how we respond when it becomes costly. This love is not about safe investments, it's about freely giving. Take Home Truth: We choose to sacrificially love one another because Jesus did it first. LifeGroup Questions: What is one thing that stuck out to you from the sermon? How do people respond when they find out you're a Christian? Why do you think they respond that way? Agree or Disagree: The problem isn't whether or not we will understand the Golden Rule, but whether or not we have the courage to live it out. Which of the four points that unpacks the Golden Rule are you strongest in? Which needs the most work? (unconditional, others-centered, proactive, reflective) How can you tell when love is a free gift and when it is a manipulative investment? What's the difference? How do you respond when those close to you (your spouse, your family, your friends, your church) stop holding up their end of the bargain? How might you respond differently if you were living out the Golden Rule? Do you think that your life would be very different if people around you followed the Golden Rule? How would things be different? Spend a few minutes writing down your response. Look back over what you wrote down for the previous question. This is how you have answered Jesus' prompt, “What do you wish others would do for you?” Is there anything on this list that you can choose to do this week for someone else?

Peter Pumpkinhead proclaims that "Any kind of love is alright" and gets nailed to a chunk of wood for saying so. What does that tell us about XTC's attitude to love and human relationships? In particular, how welcoming does this heterosexual band seem to those who aren't heterosexual themselves? This episode of What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast looks at XTC from an LGBTQI+ perspective. If you've followed this show for a while now, you know how wishy washy and inconsistent ESPN's Stephen A Smith has been when it comes to covering the Ravens. ESPECIALLY during Lamar Jackson's contract negotiations, but that's neither here nor there. Stephen A presented his weekly list of the Top-5 NFL teams league-wide, and it HAD to have pained him based on where he has Baltimore ranked thru nine weeks. On this edition of the Vault, Sarah & Bobby dive into that along with the following: LJ talks his approach to being more of a vocal leader Jeff Zrebiec predictions + midseason grades First injury report entering Week 10 Patrick Ricard breakdown via Dan Orlovsky And more...
