In this episode, we explore the origins and mission of Steiger, a radical international missionary movement that began with a punk priest in Amsterdam reaching ‘lost sheep.' Steiger emphasizes the power of preaching the cross through creative and visual methods and has grown into a global movement. The discussion delves into the challenges of communicating truth in a world shaped by the “Macdonaldisation of the Church” and the complex landscape of global youth culture. We tackle the confusion of identity in today's society, exacerbated by secular humanism and the isolating mantra of “my truth,” which have contributed to a world filled with loneliness, confusion, anxiety, and brokenness. Key topics include: •Engaging a post-Christian, overcrowded context with creativity and authenticity •Having spiritual conversations in a skeptical age •The necessity of focusing on Jesus rather than relying on “big names” •The Send as a means to mobilize a movement and this year's LAUNCH event, which aims to equip and release leaders like never before Inspiring stories from Oslo and Saudi Arabia illustrate how a holy discontent can fuel transformative action. What does simplicity look like for you in your everyday life? In this episode, we're joined by CAC Faculty member Dr. Barbara Holmes. Together, we continue our chapter-by-chapter exploration of Eager to Love with Chapter 3: “Living on the Edge of the Inside: Simplicity and Justice.” This episode explores the practice of simplicity as a path to freedom, the importance of community in supporting that journey, and the concept of "soft prophecy" as a way of living in peace and being peace in a world full of suffering. Before Paul and Drew dive into the interview with Dr. Barbara Holmes, Mike and Paul catch up with Richard at his hermitage to hear his reflections on the third chapter of Eager to Love. Dr. Barbara Holmes is a scholar of African American spirituality and mysticism. Dr. Barbara Holmes reveals how the cosmos can expand our limited constructs of religion, race, and power. As faculty at the Center for Action and Contemplation, she teaches how God's communal presence can inspire imagination and wisdom, especially in times of crisis. She is the author of Race and the Cosmos, Joy Unspeakable, and Crisis Contemplation. She hosts CAC's podcast The Cosmic We. Hosted by CAC Staff: Mike Petrow, Paul Swanson, and Drew Jackson Resources: A PDF of the transcript for this episode will be available soon. Grab a copy of Eager to Love here. Andy and Mon-Chaio challenge the traditional notions of root cause analysis and incident reviews within complex systems. They examine how the framing of ensuring errors 'never happen again' can be counterproductive, suggesting a shift towards faster recovery and continuous learning instead. Drawing parallels with After Action Reviews in the military and Netflix's Chaos Monkey, they advocate for embracing controlled chaos and fostering a culture of practice and micro-decisions. Listeners will gain insights into how technical errors and normative errors are perceived, and why focusing on organizational culture can be more effective than strict process adherence. By the end, listeners will understand the importance of balancing process with flexibility and why living at the edge of chaos is crucial for organizational resilience. Edge computing is transforming the way data is handled in today's digital landscape. By bringing computation closer to the source of data, it enhances efficiency and becomes essential for managing real-time information. The move from centralized data processing to localized solutions enables quicker decision-making and boosts performance across a range of applications, particularly as the use of IoT devices expands. In the context of IoT and real-time analytics, edge computing proves indispensable. By processing data at the network's edge instead of relying on distant data centers, it speeds up analysis while addressing bandwidth limitations and security concerns. As industries increasingly embrace IoT, integrating edge computing is crucial to maintaining real-time responsiveness and ensuring operational efficiency, paving the way for the next phase of innovation in digital ecosystems. In this piece, we will explore how edge computing is driving this shift and its broader implications across various sectors. Let's get on the edge! What is Edge Computing? Edge computing refers to bringing computation and data storage closer to the devices where it's needed, reducing latency and bandwidth use. Instead of relying solely on a centralized cloud, edge computing enables data processing at or near the source of data generation, allowing for real-time analysis and decision-making. Edge Computing vs. Cloud Computing While traditional cloud computing relies on centralized data centers to process and store data, edge computing decentralizes this process. In a cloud-only setup, data must travel from the user's device to a distant data center, which can cause delays. On the other hand, Edge computing processes data locally, reducing the time it takes for information to be sent back and forth, enhancing speed and efficiency. Role of Edge Devices in Edge Computing Edge devices, such as sensors, smartphones, and IoT devices, play a crucial role in edge computing. These devices generate data and often can process it locally. Edge devices reduce the need for continuous connectivity to central servers by handling computations at the source. This distributed approach improves response times and alleviates the load on networks and data centers, making edge computing an essential component of modern technology infrastructure. Benefits of Edge Computing over Cloud Computing Latency Reduction Edge computing significantly reduces data transmission time by processing data close to its source. Unlike cloud computing, where data must travel to centralized servers, edge computing processes data on local devices or servers, ensuring minimal delay. This reduction in latency is crucial for real-time data processing, where even milliseconds can impact the outcome. Healthcare, finance, and autonomous vehicle applications greatly benefit from this capability, enabling quick decision-making and improved performance. Enhanced Security Edge computing enhances security by localizing data processing, reducing the risks associated with centralized data storage. Sensitive information is processed and stored closer to its origin, minimizing exposure to cyber threats that are more prevalent in centralized systems. This localized approach to data handling decreases the likelihood of data breaches and cyber-attacks, providing a more secure environment for sensitive operations, such as financial transactions and personal health monitoring. Cost Savings Edge computing also offers cost savings by reducing bandwidth usage and alleviating network congestion. By processing data locally, less information must be sent over the network, resulting in lower transmission costs and decreased reliance on expensive bandwidth. This efficient use of network resources cuts costs and enhances overall system performance, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses that require constant data processing. Real-World Applications Autonomous Vehicles Edge computing is revolutionizing the...

In the 4th century, a series of powerful earthquakes shook the island of Cyprus, leaving a profound impact on its inhabitants and Kourion in particular. These seismic events not only disrupted daily life but also reshaped the landscape, causing widespread destruction and challenging the resilience of Cypriots. The earthquakes of the 4th century stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who faced and rebuilt their communities in the wake of nature's formidable fury. This month, I speak with the co-director of the Kourion Urban Space Project, Dr. Laura Swantek, as KUSP enters its 14th season at Kourion.

Have you heard of an ecotone before? An ecotone is a transition area between two adjacent and different patches of landscape, such as forest and grassland.Ecotones do not simply represent a boundary or an edge; the concept of an ecotone assumes the existence of active interaction between two or more ecosystems with properties that do not exist in either of the adjacent ecosystems. An ecotone is a meeting place that creates something entirely distinct from either side of the boundary. In essence, 1 + 1 = 3.And this third space is what I want us to explore in this month's meditation series.Edges, ecotones and third spaces are places of life, energy & growth; they are places of speciation - of creation and evolution.Third spaces are invitations into expansion - into knowing ourselves, our lands, and our actions in a way that wouldn't be possible if we only resided on one side of the edge.Join me for today's discussion of ecotones both within ourselves and in the outside world.
