Jeff Glazier, CEO of General Oncology, is taking a unique approach to treating cancer by using older chemotherapy drugs with broad action but in novel combinations designed to avoid the incidental toxicity. Their primary drug in trials is GO-4 which is focused on shutting down DNA repair in cancer cells to overcome drug resistance. While testing in patients with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, this approach was designed to combat tumor heterogeneity by targeting fundamental processes like proliferation that are common to all cancer cells within a tumor. Jeff explains, "We're actually taking a different approach than a lot of companies are. And I would say there are really two approaches because we have two different things on, we have a clinical trial right now where we're using old chemotherapy drugs in a new way, and when you combine them together, you really get just a different result. We're trying to shut down DNA repair and kill cancer cells. But the other really interesting thing, and I think it's underlying general vision, is chemotherapy drugs long ago had very broad action, and with broad action comes unwanted incidental toxicity. And over the years, it's been huge in the industry, or moving towards specific drugs that target specific things and have less incidental toxicity. The unfortunate side effect is that cancer cells can evolve around a drug if there's too much specificity. So we're taking a pretty novel approach with our business of going after drugs that have broad action, but we found a way, we believe, to do it in a way that doesn't have incidental toxicity." "I certainly feel that you want to have more than one attack. If you only do one, the cancer cells can evolve around it. The drug resistance approach I was referring to was what we call GO-4 in our clinical trial, and we're altering part of the cancer cells' fundamental biology that is involved in DNA repair and shutting it down. But we're doing it in more than one way." #GeneralOncology #PancreaticCancer #CancerAwareness #MetastaticCancer #GO4Therapy #CancerResearch #InnovativeTherapies #DrugDevelopment generaloncology.com Download the transcript here

Immigrants from Lithuania who made their way to New Britain, Connecticut at the beginning of the twentieth century found work in the city's factories turning out tools and hardware. Their weekly routine included work, church and socializing at neighborhood saloons. But major upheavals in American society were happening at the time that affected their lives including the rise of organized labor, the temperance movement, anti-immigrant sentiment, and labor strikes. In this episode, we have two new voices in public history, Central Connecticut State University students Jon Kozak and Nathaniel Smith. They produced the episode as a class project under Dr. Leah Glazier at Central Connecticut State University. This episode reminds us that some of the most interesting history can be found all around you in your own community. A big thanks to Jon Kosak and Nathaniel Smith for their hard work in producing this episode. I also want to thank Dr. Glazier, professor of public history for her help. Contact Jon Kosak at: j.kozak@my.ccsu.edu Contact Dr. Leah Glazier at: glaserles@ccsu.edu Jon and Nathaniel used a wide variety of local history materials including oral histories and the New Britain Herald newspaper. Museum Collections: The New Britain Public Library Local History Room, The New Britain Industrial Museum, Connecticut State Library, and the Elihu Burritt Library at Central Connecticut State University, specifically their special collections and archive of the New Britain Herald newspaper. Oral Histories: John Skritulsky, had been interviewed by the Federal Writers Project in 1938, by a writer in the FWP's New Britain office by the name of Albert Kayeski. Being Lithuanian himself, Kayeski understood the importance of this ethnic community in telling the story of an industrialized New Britain. Several of his other profiles bear mention of taverns, be it Skritulsky's or others as places to gather. Use of New Britain directories from the turn of the twentieth century reinforced the prevalence and importance of these institutions. It must be noted that for the clarity of our story, the character of Jonas, whose story was found in a FWP profile by Kayeski, History of a Lithuanian Immigrant, was originally listed with the name John, and was given no last name. We changed his name to Jonas, the Lithuanian translation of John, to avoid confusion with John Skritulsky in the narrative. No other names were altered from the original source material. Manuscript reference: Portrait of Occupations, Investments, and Businesses of Lithuanian Immigrants in New Britain Connecticut by the Reverend William Wolkovich-Valkavicius from 1979, Local History Room, New Britain Public Library. Song Credit: This version, by the musical group Ugniavijas, recorded in 2014 is a centuries-old Lithuanian folk song whose title roughly translates to “Sweet Beer of the Oats. The original lyrics with an English translation can be found here. It is a song that remains important to the people of Lithuania and is still sung today, often by schoolchildren. ----------------------------------------------------- Connecticut Landmarks Event Join Connecticut Landmarks at East Haddam's Palmer-Warner House for our second annual Summer Pipes & Cider! Today, we're excited to share our conversation with Dr. Rebecca Glazier, a Professor at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and author of the new book, Faith and Community: How Engagement Strengthens Members, Places of Worship, and Society. For over a decade, Rebecca has been researching how religious communities engage in their broader communities, and the findings are incredibly compelling.Rebecca's work offers a powerful perspective on how congregations can heal divisions—not just within their walls but across society. Her research shows that when faith communities serve together and engage in meaningful outreach, they create what she calls “congregational warmth,” fostering deeper connections, stronger faith, and even healthier, more united communities generally. In this conversation, we discuss why service with our congregations, outside of the four walls of our church can be transformative, why young people today are more eager than ever to engage in meaningful service, and how worship spaces can be vital places for bridging political divides. Rebecca also shared insights on how interfaith partnerships and sustained community engagement can do the deep work of depolarization and create lasting impact. Her insights feel particularly relevant and important right now, and they're also deeply hopeful. They show that small, consistent acts of service—especially when done together—can strengthen both our faith and our communities in profound ways.We absolutely loved this conversation and hope you come away from it as energized and inspired as we did. And with that, here's our conversation with Rebecca Glazier.https://tupress.temple.edu/study-guides/faith-and-community.
Ambassadors for Hope is the only organization in Lancaster County with the sole function of supporting children as soon as the parent of a child is incarcerated. “In addition to having a website with some educational resources, we are also reviewing children's book books that deal with parental incarceration so that we can make recommendations to school counselors, folks that are working with kids that have experienced parental incarceration. The family services advocate can give each child that she works with an age-appropriate book that deals with this subject. And the books all have a message of competency and resiliency so that the child knows I'm not alone in dealing with this, “said Mary Glazier, Vice Chair of Ambassadors for Hope. The program also offers teddy bears for children of incarcerated parents with their parents' voices in them. Ambassadors for hope have gifted over 300 teddy bears to children in the past five years. “And let me tell you, children of all ages love a teddy bear that has their parents voice in it. And, you know, that's one of the most popular things, “said Glazier. Ambassadors for Hope also collaborate with other local organizations to advocate for children of incarcerated parents in Lancaster County. One of those organizations is Compass Mark. A program based on federal and state strategies for substance use and gambling prevention and follow a public health model of balancing risk factors with protective factors, or strengths. Terry Miller- Landon, Director of Programs for Compass Mark says they conduct research of that shares that will best support families dealing with incarceration. “We know that parental incarceration can impact behavior, for example. So, we're available to consult with schools. And we do we do try to make sure that school social workers are aware that we're here so that they are kind of keeping that extra eye if they know that a child's parent has been incarcerated and if that child needs to get referred to counseling or something, because there are some predictable things that happen when they're feeling that family fracturing, “said Terry Miller-Landon.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She has served as Poet in Residence at Fordham University and as a member of the undergraduate and graduate creative writing faculty at Hofstra University, where she edited the digital literary magazine AMP. Praise for Ecotones:"The personal. The citational. The chronicle. All the “conquistadorial spillage….” In Ecotones, Janet Kaplan pieces these verging environs. The writing is transitional; contemplative. We are reminded everywhere of how edges touch, how language is code. The poet has flipped the surface of the page to better show us a map of our disconsolate displacements. “Motion is the translation of a body from the place it occupies to another place,” writes Euler; Janet Kaplan: “and I, bit player, confessor-chronicler, / will write it.” "- Edric Mesmer, author of Fawning and series editor of Among the NeighborsPraise for Dreamlife of a Philanthropist“…The poems here hover above their own titles, this dreamlife of the poem more important than the poem itself, a place in which thinking is not yet thought, intent not yet conclusive, not language even as a form of life, but language in the process of making that life possible. It isn't a mental life; it's too real for that easy confine. Let's just call it the necessary life – a life of serious play.” - Dan Beachy-Quick

Guest Host: Greg Skordas In an era of increasing political polarization, an unexpected beacon of hope has emerged: places of worship. Recent research suggests that religious congregations may serve as crucial meeting grounds where people of differing political views can interact, collaborate, and see each other's humanity beyond partisan labels. This unique role of faith communities offers a promising avenue for bridging the widening divides in our society. By fostering environments where shared faith and community service take precedence over political differences, religious institutions may hold a key to reinvigorating civil discourse and strengthening the fabric of our democracy. Dr. Rebecca Glazier from the University of Arkansas joins the show.

Paul Radin was one of the founding generation of American cultural anthropologists: A student of Franz Boas, and famed ethnographer of the Winnebago. Yet little is known about Radin's life. A leftist who was persecuted by the FBI and who lived for several years outside of the United States, and a bohemian who couldn't keep an academic job, there are many chapters in Radin's life which have not been told. In Anthropology and Radical Humanism: Native and African American Narratives and the Myth of Race (Michigan State University Press, 2020), Jack Glazier tells the story of Radin's work at Fisk University in the late 1920s. During his three-year appointment, he and graduate student Andrew Polk Watson collected autobiographies and religious conversion narratives from elderly African Americans. That innovative, subject-centered research complemented like-minded scholarship by African American historians reacting against the disparaging portrayals of black people by white historians. In this book, Glazier describes Radin's commitment to documenting people's own stories as they told them and his respect for them as people as a form of 'radical humanism' and sets Paul Radin's findings within the broader context of Boasian anti-racism, African American culture, and his career-defining work among the Winnebago. In this episode of the podcast Jack Glazier talks to host Alex Golub about Radin and the Boasians, the influence of Charles S. Johnson at Fisk, and how contemporary activists might view the strengths and limitations of Radin's radical humanism. Alex Golub is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Learn more about your ad choices. As we approach the next season, threat actors will be keeping a close eye on dating apps. These apps have become a prime target for threat actors due to the size of the market expanding to over 300 million users and the rich information stored in these apps. Today's guests are Jason Kent and Will Glazier. Jason is a hacker-in-residence at Cequence Security. He has a diverse information security, networking, and IT background and a generous level of knowledge for most pieces of the IT spectrum including firewalls, security architecture, security controls, and security infrastructure. Will Glazier is the Head of Threat Research at Cequence Security where they protect some of the world's largest brands from sophisticated bot attacks and threats against the public facing APIs. Will has a background in fraud abuse and prevention as well as building threat intelligence systems. Show Notes: [1:18] - Jason and Will share their backgrounds and current roles at Cequence Security. [5:24] - As common as scams and fraud are, even Jason and Will have personal experience with them. [7:39] - Dating app attacks are particularly hard because they prey on vulnerable people. There are so many cases, that there should not be shame around talking about it. [9:32] - The first red flag is when someone you are talking to on a dating app tries to get you over to texting or another app. [11:37] - In any given month, the amount of malicious API transactions that Cequence is blocking is in the billions. [13:52] - Fake accounts are constantly made but not as heavily used as taken over accounts. [16:08] - Scammers are now paying for premium accounts to appear more legitimate and the investment pays off when they scam someone. [18:11] - There are tools people can buy to make all accounts look real through automation. [19:29] - It is essential that people in a fraud department can trust the information and push it out to Cequence. [22:04] - Some organizations will pay a ransom to decrease the time wasted and money lost. In their eyes, the money lost to pay the ransom isn't as much. [26:11] - Margins are getting tighter for the bad guys. [30:31] - The infrastructure that scammers use varies. There are some that are really well known at Cequence and some that are more difficult. [32:51] - It is easier to take out one big player than to take out hundreds of small ones. [36:03] - There are human and political pressures that make things more challenging for security. [38:07] - Romance scammers are employing new tactics and switching them up. [39:48] - If you put too much trust in the platform that it makes you trust the random person you're talking to, take a step back. [42:40] - Take a look online for things that have been done by scammers historically, especially if you are new to dating apps. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Professor Jacob W. Glazier discusses his new book Paranormal Ruptures, and explains a new way to understand paranormal phenomena that does not fall into the trap of trying to find scientific proof. He calls it critical parapsychology, which tries to trace the powerful effects these experiences and narratives exert over our identity and society at large. He shares ideas about a future time when we will incorporate what we now call anomalous or paranormal experiences into our thinking. Whitney Glazier is an American Star Finalist in the category of Agricultural Placement. She knew she wanted to be an FFA member early in life, when her father was still teaching agriculture. As she and her sister got older and became more involved in showing pigs, he dad ended his 20 year career as an ag teacher and started farming full time and helping Whitney and her sister get to different pig shows. Starting in her freshman year, Whitney knew she wanted to be an American Star Finalist. However, she didn't think that a girl from a small town like her could achieve that dream. However, she kept pursuing it, finding success but staying humble. Today she finds herself on the precipice of becoming an American Star and already having been honored by being a finalist.
