This bonus content is a reading from Platypus, the CASTAC Blog. The full post by Emma Jahoda-Brown can be read at https://blog.castac.org/2025/09/odors-leakage-and-containment-the-story-of-a-southern-california-landfill/. About the post: My interest in Chiquita Canyon and the community of Val Verde grew out of my involvement with the community opposition to the landfill expansion in 2017. Now, as an anthropology student, my focus has shifted to how the sensory experience of Chiquita Canyon is interpreted, classified, regulated and elusive to regulatory agencies, community members and landfill operators and how these experiences come into conflict. Community members can use odor complaints filed through regulatory agencies to argue the case that the landfill is causing harm. These odor complaints, however, are highly contested by landfill operators as it is difficult to prove that odors are coming from the landfill as opposed to another source.

Episode 327: Bladder Leakage Is Common, But That Doesn't Mean It's Normal — with Dr. Alex Rogers I'm joined this week by my brilliant colleague and fellow urologist, Dr. Alex Rogers, for a candid, informative conversation about something way too many people silently struggle with: bladder leakage. We're two urologists talking all things pee — from stress incontinence to overactive bladder, and everything in between. Whether you're dealing with a sudden urge to run to the bathroom, leaking when you laugh or sneeze, or you're just confused about what's going on down there, this episode is for you. We break down the two most common types of bladder leakage — overactive bladder and stress urinary incontinence — and explain why they require totally different treatment approaches. We also talk about the huge impact of hormones on bladder health, especially in menopause (yes, estrogen matters here too!). Dr. Rogers and I dive into: Why bladder leakage is so common — and why we shouldn't normalize it The real science behind overactive bladder Why Botox is an underutilized but super effective treatment option How pelvic floor therapy fits into the bigger picture What's new and exciting in urology (hello, neuromodulation and telehealth) The frustrating role of insurance in limiting access to care How to find a provider who actually knows what they're doing when it comes to bladder health This isn't just a “deal with it” issue — it's a quality of life issue. And the good news? There are solutions. Real, evidence-based, life-changing options. But only if we talk about it. So let's talk. Takeaways: Bladder leakage is common but under-discussed Hormonal changes play a huge role in bladder function Overactive bladder ≠ stress incontinence — and treatments vary Botox is a powerful and underutilized option Telemedicine and new tech are changing the game Education empowers patients to advocate for better care Insurance hurdles are real — and we need to fight for better access Find the right specialist — not all care is created equal Let's stop suffering in silence and start empowering ourselves and our patients with facts, not shame.

In this episode, I sit down with pelvic floor physical therapist Mindy English to discuss what to look for when seeking a pelvic floor PT. This is a common question we receive, and we wanted to provide a nuanced conversation around it, especially for female athletes who may not realize how interconnected pelvic health is with overall movement, training, and long-term well-being. We also discuss what to expect in a pelvic floor PT appointment, why it's critical for practitioners to take a full-body approach, and how pelvic floor therapy can help athletes of all ages—whether they're dealing with postpartum recovery, leakage during workouts, or long-term pelvic health symptoms. Most dairy farms are trying to push the envelope from the conventional 4L of milk replacer per day to a higher volume to support lean structural growth of replacement heifers. Concerns of ruminal leakage resulting in fermentation has been cited as a concern, but is that based on an incomplete picture? We know microbial protein offers a nearly perfect alignment of amino acid requirements for the bovine, however nutrition programs have discounted milk replacer to exclusively providing rumen undegradable protein (RUP) – protein that skips the rumen and is absorbed in the abomasum. Marcos Marcondes, researcher from the Miner Institute, wanted to see if feeding higher volumes would change the flow of protein and energy to the calf and the physiology of the rumen, due to leakage. To test this question he fed a standard rate and double rate of milk replacer with colbalt to mark and track the flow of digestion through preweaned animals. Leakage was found in the rumen on both treatments, but the results were positive. Energy, in the form of volatile fatty acids, and microbial protein added to the fuel for these growing animals. Listen in to better understand the kinetics of digestion and questions that still remain for this phase of production. Welcome to The Ecommerce Braintrust podcast, brought to you by Julie Spear, Head of Retail Marketplace Services, and Jordan Ripley, Director of Retail Operations. Today, we're catching up with Ross Walker, Director of Retail Media, to discuss his recent workshop at the Commerce Media Brand Summit in Atlanta. Ross led an in-depth session on all things bottom-of-the-funnel—what's evolving, why it matters, and how brands can maximize this critical stage. Tune in to find out more! KEY TAKEAWAYS In this episode, Julie, Jordan, and Ross discuss: Defining the Bottom of the Funnel (BOF) BOF focuses on conversion—turning interest into purchases or fostering brand loyalty. Includes retargeting customers who have engaged with your product or brand. Targets high-intent audiences like past visitors, brand searchers, and prior buyers. Shift in Budget Allocation Brands are moving budgets away from branded search and loyalty-based retargeting. More investment is going toward non-branded bottom-of-funnel keywords and audiences. Capturing new customers efficiently is now a bigger priority over maximizing ROAS. 4 Tactics for BOF Success Day Parting: Optimizing spend by adjusting bids based on high-conversion hours and days. Late-day bidding can be effective when competitors run out of budget. Paid & Organic Interdependency: Product listings must align with high-intent keywords to maximize visibility. Strong keyword optimization remains essential for organic rankings and paid efficiency Video Ads for BOF: Vertical video performs better for high-intent searchers. Feature-driven videos convert better than broad brand storytelling at BOF. AI & Automation in Bidding: AI is effective for optimizing bulk campaigns but still requires human oversight. Best use: Let AI handle 80% of the catalog while manually fine-tuning the top performers.

In this conversation, Kelly Casperson discusses the complexities of perimenopause and its associated symptoms, particularly focusing on incontinence and the role of hormone therapy. She emphasizes the importance of vaginal estrogen as a treatment option, debunks common myths surrounding hormone therapy, and highlights the need for early intervention to prevent long-term health issues. The discussion also covers alternative treatments, the connection between hormones and pelvic floor health, and the risks and benefits of hormone therapy, ultimately advocating for patient empowerment and informed decision-making in women's health. Takeaways Vaginal estrogen is a safe and effective treatment for urinary issues during perimenopause. Hormones play a crucial role in preventing diseases associated with aging. Many women experience urinary symptoms during perimenopause, which can be alleviated with proper hormone therapy. There is a misconception that hormone therapy is only for post-menopausal women; it can be beneficial during perimenopause as well. Vaginal estrogen can significantly reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Patients should advocate for their health and seek second opinions if necessary. Hormone therapy can improve quality of life and reduce symptoms of menopause. Education about hormone therapy is essential for both patients and healthcare providers. Pelvic floor physical therapy is a valuable resource for managing incontinence. The medical community needs to shift towards preventative care rather than reactive treatment. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Laurie: Hi Dr. Cabral, First of all, thank you so much for all the information you provide. You've already helped me immensely! I saw a tiny tiny white worm in my stool and confirmed this with a stool test by my PCP. I tested positive for parasite or ova. I just ordered your para cleanse but I'm wondering if taking that 1 time will be enough. Should I be doing more? I heard a keto diet is helpful? Anything extra I should do? When should I retest? So surprised I saw this worm because I don't feel I have any symptoms at the moment, no real bloating, constipation ( as long as I take Mg before bed), diarrhea, some sleep disturbance with waking in the night but since resolving my thyroid that's improved, also haven't had food poisoning in 13 yrs. I also eat very well and take garlic tablets.thanks! Scott: Hello Dr. Cabral, my question is about blood flow. It seems it always happens in the warmer and hot months (in the cold too) but, when I keep my arms down by my side or, at least somewhat lower than my upper body, they get REALLY red. When I push into my skin the color turns natural skin color, than instantly turns red again. I can hold my arms above my head and the color ends up going back to normal. Blood pressure has always been good, I do get flushed in the face at times, but, my hands are always red. Also, the back of my arms (triceps) get red when my arms get warm like when I work out, or, the sun hits it. Any help with this is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you for all you do, you are a mentor sir!!! Lynn: Hi Dr. Cabral - for the past 5 or 6 months, it feels like when I breath there are toxins in the air, but it doesn't matter where I am - home, work, outside. It's hard to explain, but it's almost like the air is heavy, or I'm breathing in dust spores. At first, I was thinking it was the furnace (like not filtering dust, etc.), but it's not on now, and again, it's not just at my house. Plus, I have a high quality air filter at home and work. When I go to bed, it almost feels somewhat difficult to breathe because of this sensation. I'm at a loss, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all that you do! Jackie: Hi Dr. Cabral, thank you for all that you and your team do you have me greatly. I have run Big 5 --> 21 FMD --> Heavy metal + Estrogen dom --> and now in CBO. Everything has gotten much better with my PMS and general health. The one lingering symptom I have is for 3 days before my menstural cycle my percieved caloric and carb needs go up drastically - I am a bottomless pit :) For context I eat 120-150g of carbs from fruit and veggies + 18ish% bf. I am trying to figure out what my body actually needs because I can't believe that it actually needs double. My blood sugar is usually between 4.7-5.2 in the morning. Pete: Hi Dr C Thanks for everything you do I really appreciate you and all you have created. My question is about the bicuspid heart valve and the leakage. I have been ‘diagnosed' as having severe leakage and a valve replacement is needed asap. I have no symptoms what so ever, I'm an in shape active 40yr old, surf and eat really well I listened to a previous house call and you said to follow a Mediterranean diet and foundational protocol level 2 or 3 Is there anything else you could recommend you would do ?
