Welcome to Episode 28 of Printing Money.  For this one Danny is joined by our own, Joris Peels (Executive Editor, 3DPrint.com). This crossover-pod is indeed quite meta-level but it's not entirely new – some months ago Danny appeared on Joris' own podcast, the 3DPOD.  We encourage you to listen to that episode as well. Episode 28 begins with an introduction to Joris, and a look at his nearly two decades in 3D printing. From Philips to Shapeways, to Materialise and Formlabs, and consulting across the industry, Joris has some reach, to say the least. Next, Danny and Joris review RAPID, the largest 3DP/AM event in the USA, which took place earlier this month in Detroit. The cautiously optimistic tone that has been 2025 was decidedly in force at RAPID, and oh by-the-way there was a noticeable presence from the Chinese brands, tariffs or not. From RAPID the conversation shifts to geopolitics, the regulatory environment, and yes, tariffs. Amongst the analysis are some great quotables to look for, including “Manufacturing itself is a weapons system,” and “Uncertainty is the new normal,” all amidst a whole lot of 3DP/AM industry food for thought. And all that is only the first half. In the second half of the episode, Danny and Joris dive into Printing Money's raison d'etre - deals and analysis! Specifically, this episode focuses on recent M&A, including coverage of the Nano Dimension-Desktop Metal-Markforged tie-up, BICO's new direction under Maria Forss, Fictiv's eye-catching acquisition by Misumi, and the trend of traditional Japanese manufacturers embracing 3DP/AM. Please enjoy Episode 28 and check out our previous episodes too. This episode was recorded April 24, 2025. Welcome to 2025, and welcome to Printing Money Episode 25!  For this episode Danny welcomes back a couple of previous guests: Arno Held (AM Ventures) and startup advisor Tali Rosman. It's a new year so, naturally, this episode has its share of reflecting on the 2024 that was and the 2025 (and beyond) that will be. Danny, Arno, and Tali start off by harkening back one last time to Formnext – what is traditionally the end of the 3D printing year turned out only to be a prelude to a whole lot of industry-shifting news in December. So yes, Danny, Arno and Tali discuss Shapeways' rebirth, Forward AM's insolvency, Velo's restructuring, voxeljet's go-private. And this is all really interesting, but it's only the appetizer. Next, Episode 25 wades into the deep end, analyzing and opining on the goings-on with Nano Dimension. Will the acquisitions of Desktop Metal and Markforged happen? Will the shareholder activists force the company to unwind? And what's this about tin foil hats and Russian oligarchs? After the Nano Dimension discussion, Episode 25 moves on to review some of 2024's venture capital raises, including a few recent ones.  Then, Danny, Arno and Tali consider the current artificial intelligence (AI) revolution and how it might dovetail with what's to come for additive manufacturing (AM) this year and further into the future. Please enjoy Episode 25, and please join Danny, Arno, Tali, and your other favorite Printing Money personalities at AM Strategies next month, Feb 4-6 in New York City. The numerical algorithm used in Flo22 is analyzed in detail in Publication 31, Iterative solution of transonic flows. The next work that had a worldwide impact was the JST scheme in 1981. The AIAA Paper 81-1259 (publication 67) has more than 6000 citations on Google Scholar. Prof. Jameson gave two other presentations a few months earlier which describe the numerical method in more detail. These are publications 63 and 65. More recently he gave a history of the JST scheme and its further development in publication 456, which also gives a detailed discussion of the multigrid scheme which was  first  described in publication 78.The Airplane Code described in AIAA Paper 86-0103 (publication 104) was the first code that could solve the Euler equations for a complete aircraft, the culmination of 15 years of his efforts to calculate transonic flows for progressively more complex configurations and with more complete mathematical models. It was never published as a journal article. The design of algorithms for unstructured grids is comprehensively discussed in his book (publication 500).He proposed the idea of using control theory for aerodynamic shape optimization in 1988 in publication 127, and its further development for transonic flows modeled by the RANS equations is described publications 222 and 229.  Its most striking application was the aerodynamic design of the Gulfstream G650 in 2006, when he performed the calculations with Syn107 on a server in his garage.

She has served as Poet in Residence at Fordham University and as a member of the undergraduate and graduate creative writing faculty at Hofstra University, where she edited the digital literary magazine AMP. Praise for Ecotones:"The personal. The citational. The chronicle. All the “conquistadorial spillage….” In Ecotones, Janet Kaplan pieces these verging environs. The writing is transitional; contemplative. We are reminded everywhere of how edges touch, how language is code. The poet has flipped the surface of the page to better show us a map of our disconsolate displacements. “Motion is the translation of a body from the place it occupies to another place,” writes Euler; Janet Kaplan: “and I, bit player, confessor-chronicler, / will write it.”  "- Edric Mesmer, author of Fawning and series editor of Among the NeighborsPraise for Dreamlife of a Philanthropist“…The poems here hover above their own titles, this dreamlife of the poem more important than the poem itself, a place in which thinking is not yet thought, intent not yet conclusive, not language even as a form of life, but language in the process of making that life possible.  It isn't a mental life; it's too real for that easy confine.  Let's just call it the necessary life – a life of serious play.”  - Dan Beachy-Quick

Why is star formation the workhorse of the universe? What is a flocculent galaxy? Which cosmic cataclysm creates new globular star clusters? And why are we currently seeing such amazing aurora in unusual places? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astronomer Dr. Kelsey Johnson, past president of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), and author of “Into the Unknown – The Quest to Understand the Mysteries of the Cosmos.” As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the auroras that have been occurring during the peak of the current solar max period of the roughly 11-year-long solar cycle. From the Mother's Day aurora borealis in May to the amazing night of October 10, when millions of people as far south as Florida and Mexico were treated to one of the most spectacular, vibrant light shows many of them had ever seen. Kelsey shares the story of the first time she saw an aurora, as a high school student in Minnesota who didn't even know what one was. Upon leaving her boyfriend's house at around 2 in the morning, she saw a brilliantly glowing sky. Kelsey's availability bias kicked in, and her assumption was that it had to be either god or aliens, with the latter being the more likely. Needless to say, the next day the front page of the local paper solved the mystery. And then it's on to a nerdy discussion of existential curiosity, deep, philosophical questions, and her book, “Into the Unknown.” You'll hear what drove Kelsey to write the book, and about her lifelong drive to understand our place in the universe. Kelsey and Allen nerd out over Calabi-Yau manifolds (concepts from string theory), imaginary numbers and complex numbers, Euler's Formula and more, and then, thankfully, it's time for our first question. Johnny asks, “What is a flocculent galaxy, and why are they interesting?” Kelsey says that they're spiral galaxies with spiral arms that aren't very pronounced, that are exceptionally “floofy and chaotic” with very different, but very cool star formation. Chuck and Kelsey explain why star formation is the workhorse of the universe and how important it is. Kelsey also explains why globular clusters are her “favorite” type of star cluster. There are about 150 of them living around our galaxy, and they're almost as old as the universe itself, over 10 billion years old. Kesley studies them to learn how the universe was formed and how galaxies came together. New globular clusters are rare, but they can be created by the collision of two galaxies. That's all we could squeeze into Part 1, but come back in two weeks for Part 2 of "Into the Unknown with Dr. Kelsey Johnson." Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A simple model of math skill, published by Alex Altair on July 21, 2024 on LessWrong. I've noticed that when trying to understand a math paper, there are a few different ways my skill level can be the blocker. Some of these ways line up with some typical levels of organization in math papers: Definitions: a formalization of the kind of objects we're even talking about. Theorems: propositions on what properties are true of these objects. Proofs: demonstrations that the theorems are true of the objects, using known and accepted previous theorems and methods of inference. Understanding a piece of math will require understanding each of these things in order. It can be very useful to identify which of type of thing I'm stuck on, because the different types can require totally different strategies. Beyond reading papers, I'm also trying to produce new and useful mathematics. Each of these three levels has another associated skill of generating them. But it seems to me that the generating skills go in the opposite order. This feels like an elegant mnemonic to me, although of course it's a very simplified model. Treat every statement below as a description of the model, and not a claim about the totality of doing mathematics. Understanding Understanding these more or less has to go in the above order, because proofs are of theorems, and theorems are about defined objects. Let's look at each level. Definitions You might think that definitions are relatively easy to understand. That's usually true in natural languages; you often already have the concept, and you just don't happen to know that there's already a word for that. Math definitions are sometimes immediately understandable. Everyone knows what a natural number is, and even the concept of a prime number isn't very hard to understand. I get the impression that in number theory, the proofs are often the hard part, where you have to come up with some very clever techniques to prove theorems that high schoolers can understand (Fermat's last theorem, the Collatz conjecture, the twin primes conjecture). In contrast, in category theory, the definitions are often hard to understand. (Not because they're complicated per se, but because they're abstract.) Once you understand the definitions, then understanding proofs and theorems can be relatively immediate in category theory. Sometimes the definitions have an immediate intuitive understanding, and the hard part is understanding exactly how the formal definition is a formalization of your intuition. In a calculus class, you'll spend quite a long time understanding the derivative and integral, even though they're just the slope of the tangent and the area under the curve, respectively. You also might think that definitions were mostly in textbooks, laid down by Euclid or Euler or something. At least in the fields that I'm reading papers from, it seems like most papers have definitions (usually multiple). This is probably especially true for papers that are trying to help form a paradigm. In those cases, the essential purpose of the paper is to propose the definitions as the new paradigm, and the theorems are set forth as arguments that those definitions are useful. Theorems Theorems are in some sense the meat of mathematics. They tell you what you can do with the objects you've formalized. If you can't do anything meaty with an object, then you're probably holding the wrong object. Once you understand the objects of discussion, you have to understand what the theorem statement is even saying. I think this tends to be more immediate, especially because often, all the content has been pushed into the definitions, and the theorem will be a simpler linking statement, like "all As are Bs" or "All As can be decomposed into a B and a C". For example, the fundamental theorem of calculus...

Despite this, in my 20-year career as a palliative care physician, I have yet to see a death doula in the wild. I'm unsure what they do, how often they're used, and who pays for their work. So, on today's podcast, we try to get to the bottom of what exactly is an end-of-life doula. We've invited two death doulas, Jane Euler and John Loughnane (who is also a family doc and palliative care physician), to talk about the role of a doula at the end of life.  We also invited Beth Klint to speak about the doula's role within a traditional hospice organization.
