On this energetic episode, Jonathan and Ryan watched the Kirby Air Riders Direct and the trailers from Gamescom and broke things down to their respective mans: Batman, He-Man, Kirby Man, or Bubsy Man, and decided which one is best...or did they? Will we ever know for sure? Only time can tell, but Ryan's favorite is clearly Rufus the cat. A made-for-HBO movie from 1987 starring William Peterson and Virginia Madsen when their careers were just getting going, Long Gone tells the hilarious and heartfelt story of a season in the lives of the Tampico Stogies, a terrible southern independent minor league team. Whose fortunes are about to change. Peterson plays player/manager Cecil “Stud” Cantrell, Who has many life rules no one should follow and Madsen is Dixie Lee Boxx who is old enough to order beer for breakfast. Long Gone can be watched in full for free on YouTube! And thank me you will after watching this hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking , bawdy flick which just happens to have a great baseball story as well.

Segment 1: • Tucker Carlson challenges Ted Cruz on Israel—reveals confusion on biblical promises. • The Abrahamic Covenant still stands; God's plan for Israel isn't revoked. • If you quote Scripture, know the context—big promises carry big implications. Segment 2: • Is support for Israel about the government or God's chosen people? • MacArthur: Christians have a biblical obligation to care for the Jews. • There's clarity: God has unfinished business with national Israel. Segment 3: • Word of the day: Censoriousness — being hypercritical and condemning. • Jonathan Edwards warns: a censorious spirit rushes to judge others' salvation. • Watch for petty criticisms over non-essentials—it's a sign of pride, not discernment. Segment 4: • Edwards exposes how uncharitable hearts destroy grace-filled relationships. • Do you judge people harsher when they struggle with sins you've overcome? • A jealous, suspicious spirit betrays a lack of gospel charity. ___ Thanks for listening! Happy Hump Day, everyone! The weather continuing to improve today & tomorrow before getting close to 70° on Friday. In the news this morning, the 23 & Me website crashed yesterday after everyone tried to delete their info from the site after the company announced it was filing for bankruptcy, there's a recall in Wisconsin on Coca-Cola, and Ford has also issued a recall on certain models. Plus, Jersey Mike's "Day of Giving" is today & stores in Wisconsin will be donating 100% of their profits to the Special Olympics of WI. And the two escaped river otters are still on the loose in the Green Bay area. In sports, the Bucks wrap up their west-coast road trip tonight in Denver, and they'll be without Damian Lillard for the foreseeable future as he deals with blood clots in his legs. Alexander Ovechkin scored last night and is now just six goals away from passing Gretzky. Both the men's March Madness tourney & Major League Baseball's regular season are on TV tomorrow! Elsewhere in sports, some NFL roster moves including Russell Wilson to the Giants, and Stefon Diggs to the Patriots. Plus, J.J. McCarthy hasn't been told that he'll be the starting QB for the Vikings yet. And the reporter who recorded the Dan Hurley rant last weekend has finally received an apology from the UConn employee who threatened him for uploading the video. We let you know what's on TV tonight and talked about the seven things your guests will notice if they aren't clean. A pilot that went missing in Alaska was found alive thanks to some help from other local pilots. Recent poll found that 2/3rds of Americans want their childhood products to make a come-back. The Olympics will take place in Australia in 2032, and apparently the rowers might have to deal with crocs in the water! The state of North Carolina is looking to pass the "Ric Flair Act" and establish a wrestling Hall of Fame in the future. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaWoman who left her kids in a hot car while she swapped barcodes in a Walmart, a hotel employee in Scotland accused of stealing money from the wedding cards of a bride & groom staying in the hotel, Texas might require an ID to purchase a sex toy online, another #FloridaWoman who robbed a Dairy Queen at gunpoint and only made off with $1.50 in cash, and a woman who drowned her own dog in an airport bathroom.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jason Stewart is a DJ (playing as Them Jeans) and cohost of How Long Gone, a podcast that dips in and out of the food world with surprising and entertaining frequency. It was so great to have Jason back on the show to talk about where he's been dining out in Los Angeles and New York, his home cooking stylings, and some of his recent writing for TASTE. Also on the show we have a great conversation with Tejal Rao, a critic at large for the Food section of The New York Times. Tejal is based in Los Angeles and wrote a terrific story about Pasadena's Panda Inn, the parent restaurant of Panda Express. We talk about the restaurant's legacy while digging into some of Tejal's recent favorite Los Angeles restaurants.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? Drop us a review on Apple, or star us on Spotify. A new film from the host of the Long Gone podcast, Michael Dault. Billions of dollars are generated each year in the sports memorabilia and trading card industry, but who are the buyers and sellers? What is the actual value of what is being sold? Hobby Hustle follows three separate people who became involved in the polarizing obsession that changed their lives forever. The documentary hits all angles of the hobby. Three of the main stories the film follows are of a kid who becomes youtube famous as well as locally famous for collecting and so he decides to start a brick and mortar hobby store. We follow a man and his family who found millions of dollars worth of baseball cards in their relative's attic and then we follow another man who went to prison for 6 years for forgery-- a master forgery con man who sold fake memorabilia he signed to thousands of victims. There are little stories of other collectors and aspects of the hobby woven in between these main stories. The film is a love letter as well as cautionary tale about the sports trading card and memorabilia hobby. Hobby Hustle is available on Apple TV and Amazon on 2/16

The moments in NICKEL BOYS that nod to 1958's THE DEFIANT ONES are less direct citations than stylized invocations by director RaMell Ross, who incorporates a number of abstractions and flourishes into the film's visual language. Chief among those stylistic gambits is the film's use of first-person perspective, which kicks off our discussion of NICKEL BOYS' uniquely textured take on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer-winning novel. From there we consider the deeper meaning and intent behind NICKEL BOYS' use of visuals and audio from THE DEFIANT ONES, and where the two films overlap in their ideas about racial justice in the Jim Crow South and clashing philosophies of idealism and realism. Then our returning guest co-host Noel Murray offers a Your Next Picture Show recommendation for another social-issue film from the team behind THE DEFIANT ONES. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE DEFIANT ONES, NICKEL BOYS, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Stanley Kramer's 1958 feature THE DEFIANT ONES, a film very much of its time, makes multiple on-screen appearances in RaMell Ross' new NICKEL BOYS, a film about the way the past haunts the present. Both movies take place in the Jim Crow-era South and engage with that setting's lopsided ideas about justice, but THE DEFIANT ONES does so from a much more straightforward approach, operating as both a stylish thriller about two escaped prisoners, one black (Sidney Poitier) and one white (Tony Curtis), and an earnest allegory about interracial acceptance. That latter quality makes it easy to lump in with Kramer's other “message movies,” which are often dismissed from a modern vantage point as stodgy and sanctimonious, so we're revisiting THE DEFIANT ONES, with an assist from critic and pal Noel Murray, to see whether it earns or defies that reputation. And in Feedback we revisit our WIZARD OF OZ discussion with a reader suggestion of another child female protagonist who rivals Dorothy when it comes to teary helplessness. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE DEFIANT ONES, NICKEL BOYS, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Life is tough for people of color in the early twentieth century—not only in the Southern states, which have put Reconstruction firmly behind them in favor of Jim Crow laws. Even so, Lucille Love, known as the Little Girl with the Big Voice, dreams of making her name on Broadway and eventually moving to Paris, leaving behind the prejudices that restrict black women in the United States. When Marcus Williams offers to manage Lucille's singing career, she's sure that reaching her goal is just a matter of time. Until some old enemies of her father track her down … This richly developed story intertwines a love of music and musicians, an exploration of color prejudice, and a tense drama of criminals with long memories and no scruples. At its heart stands Lucille—a passionate, determined young woman who doesn't always make the best choices but whose heart is in the right place. I found it an engrossing read, and I bet you will too. Monica Chenault-Kilgore is the author of Long Gone, Come Home and, most recently, The Jewel of the Blues (Graydon House, 2024). C. P. This week's Talkhouse Podcast is actually taken from a conversation that served as the online launch party for the second issue of our print ‘zine, The Talkhouse Reader, which was lovingly put together by Talkhouse music editor Annie Fell. The issue, which you can order at store.talkhouse.com explores the intersection of food and music, so naturally this episode does as well. Our guests are Jason Stewart and Rostam. Stewart is, along with Chris Black, the host of the popular podcast How Long Gone, in which the two discuss pop culture, fashion, and whatever else happens to come to mind, often with great guests—recent ones include Jenny Lewis, Waxahatchee, and Isaac Brock—but frequently just the two of them gabbing like better-read versions of your hippest friends. They're part of the fabulous Talkhouse Podcast Network, and you can catch the How Long Gone guys live this June if you're lucky enough to live in one of the cities they'll be visiting. Tour dates and their deep catalog of episodes can be found on their site. Today's other guest is Rostam, who's best known as a co-founder of Vampire Weekend and co-architect of that band's sound. Rostam left Vampire Weekend a few years ago to pursue solo and production work, and he's kept plenty busy. He made a great record with Hamilton Leithauser of the Walkmen as well as a fully solo record called Changephobia—you may have heard him on the Talkhouse Podcast talking about it with Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast. He's released a few standalone songs recently as well, and as always he's a thoughtful conversationalist with something interesting to say. Since this conversation is focused largely on food, you can expect to hear about Rostam's egg habits, a killer salmon recipe, and some talk about Rostam's mom, who's a well known chef of Persian food who once went toe-to-toe with Martha Stewart. Enjoy, and please check out the Talkhouse Reader issue two at store.talkhouse.com. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jason Stewart and Rostam for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was put together by Annie Fell and edited by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
This was the town where the Eastern Oregon Gold Rush of '61 got started, and it was a wild and lawless place; town ordinances did prohibit stabbing or shooting people “in public places,” but otherwise the town was mostly wide open. Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman discuss Mike Judge's 1999 film Office Space, citing the state of our culture and politics to explain how it became a raw critique and a eulogy to working in an office. While our society might never know an atmosphere like the one created in this film, it still gives us vital insight into the psychological impact the '90s had on us. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Kate and Brodie link up with Chris Black and Jason Stewart, hosts of the podcast How Long Gone. They were in Melbourne for How Long Gone: A Live Experience as part of the Eighty-Six Festival. The morning after the after-party, we regrouped to hear about how Melbourne is better in every way (bar one) than Copenhagen, what Mauricio is up to when the cameras aren't rolling, and what's going on in butter trends right now. And we share some local intel with them, including the saga of Schapelle Corby, who gets to do TED Talks here, and how Evan Dando is connected to Sydney (and its women).See AlsoBL's profile on Troye Sivan is the cover story in this weekend's Good Weekend (in The Age and SMH)Also AlsosChris recommendsFancy Italian toothbrushesOfficine Universelle BulyThe Belair Lip BombsJason recommendsJulie RestaurantThis movie called PriscillaNPCedeKate recommendsART ALSO: Marc Hundley monograph The Voyage Out (see also: Chris's recent interview with Marc in GQ)SYDNEY ALSO: Amuro – new Japanese sake spot in Surry HillsLISTEN ALSO – Autumn Mix by Arp / Alexis Georgopoulos on NTSBrodie recommendsWATCH ALSO: Melbourne Queer Film Festival, which runs 9-19 NovemberSNACK ALSO: The prawn cocktail from the Royal Oak HotelSTRETCH ALSO: Free Pilates in the Park with Sebastian Coles at MPavilion – Tue 5, 12 and 19 December 2023, 7am—8amFind us on Instagram @seealsopodcast Hosted on Acast.
