Just days after British troops captured New York City from General Washington and his army in September 1776, fire broke out, destroying a fifth of the city. The British blamed rebels who had remained hidden in Manhattan, but Washington, who had been ordered by Congress to leave the city standing on his retreat, never claimed responsibility, though he complained that the blaze hadn't caused more destruction. So who did start the fire and why? Joining me this week to discuss the New York fire and the question of who started it is Dr. Benjamin Carp, Professor and Daniel M. Lyons Chair of History at Brooklyn College, and author of The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution.  Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The poetry is from selections of “Conflagration: A Poem,” Printed in New York from High Gaine in 1780 and performed by Theodore Weflen-Pollock. The original Sherlock Holmes – the one who created all of the mannerisms that characterized the famous sleuth (his hat, pipe and “Elementary my dear Watson”) – was an actor from Connecticut. And, he built one of the most iconic homes still in existence in the state – Gillette Castle. Hear the fascinating background on the man and his castle from author Erik Ofgang.

The deadliest fire at a circus in U.S. history occurred in Hartford, CT in 1944. The fire killed 186 patrons, mostly women and children. The most unbelievable part of the story, though, is how it may have started. The official cause, nearly 80 years afterwards, is still listed as “undetermined,” but the potential case to be made for arson – as told by feature writer Erik Ofgang – will literally leave you incredulous.

In this episode, Erik and I talk about teaching during Covid, his love for writing in the field of education, and also shares an interesting story about how his dog ate his students' homework. Erik is a down-to-earth, passionate, and insightful human who wants to share fabulous resources with educators and faculty that engage students and improve learning experiences. More About Erik (from his LinkedIn bio) I'm an educator, journalist, author, and recovering PowerPoint user. My writing has appeared in the Washington Post, The Atlantic, Tablet Magazine, Yankee Magazine, Thrillist, and many other publications. My most recent book, "The Good Vices: From Beer to Sex, The Surprising Truth About What's Actually Good for You," was published by Penguin Random House. I'm currently the senior writer at Tech & Learning and a faculty mentor in Western Connecticut State University's MFA in Creative and Professional writing program. I was previously a senior writer at Connecticut Magazine and an adjunct professor at Mercy College, Quinnipiac University, and Bridgeport University. Throughout my career, I have been obsessed with the root of knowledge — how we know what we know. This has led me down many rabbit holes ranging from investigating the true cause of the Hartford circus fire for Connecticut Magazine or debunking generations of hamburger history lies with new documentation for the Washington Post. "they are an extraordinarily astute couple" [VALL]    Harold and Theodora Niver (that's Tyke and Teddie to all who know them), are a unique couple, even by Sherlockian standards. They've had an abiding love of Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper and Dracula for most of their adult lives, they live at Baskerville Hall, and founded and ran the Men on the Tor, a Connecticut Sherlock Holmes society. [Which just so happens to be the group where Scott first got his start in Sherlockian societies.]   But one thing that keeps them active is appearing across Connecticut as William and Helen Gillette. They make regular weekend appearances at Gillette Castle, have been special guests at the William Gillette Luncheon during the BSI Weekend, and have been hired for regular events to perform "An Evening with the Gillettes."   As both of them are members of the Baker Street Irregulars, the Nivers are part of a select group of individuals in the Florin Society - having two shillings between them. Tyke received his investiture "The Man on the Tor" in 1977 and Teddie received her investiture "Carina" in 1997.   Join us on this very personal episode that has wonderful stories and details about this grand couple's adventures. From Don and Betty Grant at the Castle to Michael Harrison's sly preparedness to the law firm that includes language like "blithering saphead," it's full of surprises. We conclude with a "Gas-Lamp" that's cobbled together from the Introduction to Gillette's play in book form, and a poem written on the occasion of William Gillette's death.   Sponsors This episode includes our two longtime sponsors, plus a new addition.
