Choses à Savoir TECH
Combien vaut réellement Google Chrome ?

Choses à Savoir TECH

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2025 2:26

The Google antitrust trial continued on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, with the Justice Department presenting evidence that Google used its dominance in the search engine market to stifle competition. Here is the News from the Past 24 HoursThe Justice Department called witnesses from Google's rivals, including Microsoft and DuckDuckGo. The witnesses testified that Google's practices made it difficult for them to compete.Microsoft's witness, CVP of Search and AI Jordi Ribas, testified that Google's dominance in the search engine market has led to higher prices for advertisers and lower quality results for users.DuckDuckGo's CEO, Gabriel Weinberg, testified that Google's anti-competitive practices have made it difficult for DuckDuckGo to grow its market share.Google's defense team has argued that the company's dominance in the search engine market is due to the superiority of its product. They have also argued that Google's practices are pro-competitive and benefit consumers. The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks. It is unclear when the judge will issue a ruling. However, the Justice Department's case appears to be strong, and it is possible that Google could be found guilty of antitrust violations. The outcome of the Google antitrust trial could have a significant impact on the company and the technology industry as a whole. If Google is found guilty, the judge could order the company to change its practices or even break it up. This could lead to more competition in the search engine market and other areas of the technology industry. The trial is also being closely watched by other tech giants, such as Amazon and Apple. If Google is found guilty, it could set a precedent for antitrust cases against other tech companies.

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2022 15:05

Topics of the dayBroken networkUpdate to the DuckDuckGo storyBroken network As I mentioned in both episode 135 and 136, I have made some changes to my network setup. I now have a nice private network between different sites setup using VPN. Multiple NAS:es has been setup and data is flowing freely in this private network. This is great.  During the setup of the network I realised that me and Michael by pure chance was using the same IP-network segments - and no it was not the 192.168.1.0/24 network that seems to be the one that everyone is using. To not break the routing - since a network cannot exist in two places at the same time - one of us had to change. And since I am a nice guy…  I looked through my configuration and there was actually just a few things that I really needed to change. It was the interface IP of the firewall and the IP-ranges that the local DHCP-server was serving. So as I sometimes say, no one remembers a coward, and changed the IPs. The network went down and didn't go up again.  Reboot if the router. Reboot of the router. And I for saw a re-setup of the router and all the VPNs and everything. But by pure chance I tried to use my RoadWarrior VPN - and I was so surprised when that still worked. I was still able to connect to the router through that. I was also able to connect to the office on the other side of one of the VPN tunnels. But the local network was down.  I probably spent an hour or two troubleshooting. The setup just looked fine. There was nothing wrong with it. I checked DHCP-server, firewall rules, NAT . Yeah everything you could thing off. But no luck.  After a while I did the standard setup guide of the router. It makes the basic config of the router. And then the local network went up. For 2 minutes. Then it was down again. Did the setup guide again. Network worked for 10 minutes and went down. That was strange. But it made me think about the pfBlockerNG that I setup a few weeks ago to block TikTok traffic. That is the only thing I could think about that was doing anything on a time-base in the router. To be sure I disabled it and deinstalled it - and after that no problem with the network going down.  I still can't explain what was causing it but when the rules engine ran to update the sites to block - it also blocked my internal network. Since this was an internal blocklist it was not visible to in the UI and hard to find. This is a thing that could take a long time to find and I am pretty happy that I did. I still haven't reinstalled it and reconfigured the block-lists — that is a project for a calm weekend in the future. But it so brought back memories from the old days when I was working as a network technician setting up big networks.  The good thing is that I now have a new IP network range and we could configure the networks. Learning - next time - let Michael change his IP-range instead….  Update to the DuckDuckGo story In episode 137 I talked about the new that DuckDuckGo got caught not blocking all 3rd party cookies in their browser but allowed Microsofts cookies. After releasing the episode I got pinged by Gabriel Weinberg, the CEO and founder of DDG. He stated that they do block 3rd party cookies from Microsoft and sent a link to a reddit article - of course linked in the show notes - where he explains in what way the do not do this.  The article states that they do block 3rd-party tacking cookies - e.g. the carrier of the individual id to be placed on the computer - even from Microsoft. They also have the capability to block 3rd-party scripts - e.g. the script that will put the cookie in the first place. They do this for most 3rd-party trackers but not for Microsoft. This means that Microsoft can still track your activity on a site where their tracking script is available - but they will have a much harder time to track you cross sites since their cookie identifying you will not be available. This will likely still give enough information to Microsoft to still identify you though different fingerprinting technologies.  So yes blocking third-party cookies but allow the 3rd party scripts from some providers. Splitting hairs in my opinion.  I am still thinking that DDG are genuinely trying to do a good thing but has gotten some issues since they are a private company that needs to pay their staff. The big failure here is still the lack of transparency - if they were just open and honest about what they do and don't do this would be a non-issue. They allow some scripts - we know about the Microsoft scripts - who else are they allowing and why. Just be open about it - it will be found and leaked any way.  And to iterate - this whole discussion is about the DDG browser not the DDG search. I see no problems with the search.

The ninth Moonshots Master episode is here and we are diving into Critical Thinking and SECOND ORDER THINKING!Helping set the scene for Second Order Thinking we think it only right to start with Howard Marks, who explains why if you think the same as everyone else you're not going to be a superior investor. We then have breakdowns, courtesy Yanis from Time Management and Productivity, of both Second Order Thinking and how it influences future actions, as well as Second Order Consequences and how every action has a consequence. Now it's time to truly understand the concept of Second Order Thinking, so we break down some thinking from Roman Krznaric of Big Think, who tells us that it is possible to utilise long term thinking and imagine the future if you retrain your brain. Swedish Investor then breaks down Howard Marks' 3 chapters on risk, and how understand, recognize, and control it. Lastly, we have Taylor Benterud, who creates a great example of second order consequences for us, demonstrating some long-term thinking as a mental model with an agency model example.Helping us adopt the practice and techniques of Second Order Thinking we get introduced to the concept of critical thinking with the TED-Ed channel which help us find the most useful information. We then have Jordan Peterson teaching us how critical thinking and writing are so interconnected. In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D discusses the ramping up of censorship as the conflict in Ukraine escalates.Double D jumps in by discussing the recent shutting down of RT and all associated independent media such as Redacted Tonight and On Contact. He explains to his viewers that now, RT and Redacted Tonight are fully purged, using screen mirror to show that those channels are "not available in your country." He goes on to show that several Twitter users who were disseminating information and footage from the conflict have also been suspended.Double D goes on to read a tweet from DuckDuckGo CEO, Gabriel Weinberg; which says that the search engine will begin "downranking" any sources or content "related to Russian misinformation." He then jumps in to reading preliminary legislation imported from the EU that lays down broad powers and infrastructure for the purpose of wholesale internet censorship centered around the concept of "fake news" and "disinformation."Double D warns that granting such powers to tackle such a vague ideation is extremely dangerous, especially during a time where the world teeters on a war that has the capacity to go global.Double D goes on to read a recent memo from Google sent out to YouTube creators, which outlines new terms of service meant to "counter disinformation" regarding election integrity. Among the stipulations were the announcement that content which questions the fairness of an election, or content that distributes "hacked materials" ie, Wikileaks, will be pulled down from the platform.Ruminating on the consolidation of internet censorship, Double D eviscerates the "private company terms of service" argument for censorship. Arguing first that while such power seems a convenient tool for purging theocrats and fascists, consenting to such a precedent gives private corporations the power to purge anyone who dissents from public life. He then argues that in a capitalist society where corporations own the government, censorship at the hands of a private enterprise amounts to de facto state censorship.Double D ends the video by showing an article from MSM which condemns China for purging "pro-Ukraine" content from the internet, while giving priority to pro-Russian perspectives. Double D scoffs at the hypocrisy of Western media pushing such a narrative while the US and EU engage in the wholesale excommunication of anyone who questions the nature of the Ukraine conflict.

Brian Stoner says that Google, Facebook, and many other companies have made it their business models to track you online, but in this episode of the Breakout Growth Podcast, he explains to hosts, Sean Ellis and Ethan Garr, that while regulation may ultimately be the answer to this problem, consumers can fight back today with DuckDuckGo’s all-in-one mobile and desktop privacy solutions. At DuckDuckGo, Brian serves as Vice-President of Product, shaping the company’s browser extension and mobile app experiences. Consumers use these solutions to browse and search the Internet for free, but the company is challenging the notion that users must sacrifice their privacy for these services. The company makes money showing ads to its users, but it does no user tracking in the process. To be successful, DuckDuckGo has optimized for speed-to-value, elegantly showing users how its services protect and serve with every interaction. So what are the sacrifices and tradeoffs for a company that’s made search privacy its mission? Can users expect the same search quality they get from Google? And without access to user data how can DuckDuckGo effectively optimize for growth? We drill into these questions with Brian and learn how the company’s fully remote team embraces a culture of transparency and learning to drive sustainable growth. Few companies dare to challenge the Googles and Facebooks of the world, and even fewer are successful. However, in a world where consumers often feel powerless when it comes to trading privacy and security for access to the connected world, DuckDuckGo has found a way to grow and thrive. We discussed: * Why consumers feel powerless to protect their privacy on the Internet, and how DuckDuckGo challenges the business models of Internet giants like Google (2:04) * DuckDuckGo’s advertising-based model, and how that works without user-level tracking (4:42) * How the company looks to build parity in its functionality with its competitors relying on external APIs and other innovations (9:50) * The company’s approach to making good bets by looking for “ the smallest thing we can do with the highest impact, and lowest complexity” (14:24) * Founder, Gabriel Weinberg’s thoughts on “Traction” and what it means at DuckDuckGo (20:54) * The culture that challenges the company’s fully remote team to question assumptions (24:00) * Organization around growth, without a centralized growth team (30:12) * User testing movie nights to share learnings (41:02) And much, much, more . . .

Google products have faced intense criticism in the last few years and their search engine has not been spared. Among the criticisms, the most troubling ones are invasion of privacy and creating a "filter bubble." With a 87.35% market share of global searches, it's not easy to compete with Google and there are very few companies that are currently competing with Google in the search engine space. So you may be thinking, "What's the alternative to Google?" That's the question I'll attempt to answer in this episode by revealing the 3 best search alternatives to Google. And don't worry, my list won't feature Bing. I know it's ludicrous to suggest replacing Google as the default search engine, like a few top SEOs have done, but you can use any of these 3 alternative search engines as a secondary tool to browse the web. I'm jealous of Gabriel Weinberg. He wrote the book I WISH I wrote. It's called "Super Thinking: The Big Book of Mental Models." This book has hundreds of mental models, cognitive biases, ect. This is a book I'm going to keep out and re-read pretty regularly. Because it explains why we think the way we think. Here are a few you'll hear about in this episode: how to force yourself into thinking critically, how to stop jumping to conclusions, how to end arguments with people you love, how to improve your decision-making ability and more. And Gabriel is also the founder of Duck Duck Go, a search engine that gets over a billion searches a month. And focusses 100% of keeping you safe and searches private. You'll hear more about this, why I use it and how it can benefit you.   I write about all my podcasts! Check out the full post and learn what I learned at jamesaltucher.com/podcast. Ep. 146 - Gabriel Weinberg: 19 Ways to Sell Your Ideas and Scale

The James Altucher Show

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 15, 2015 60:31 Transcription Available

You know why I wrote Choose Yourself. But you don't know how you got here. How did you get here, on my email list, my website, Facebook page, Twitter? Do you want to know why you're following me? I'm going to tell you. I'll tell you my secrets to building an email list, a customer base, an audience. I'm going to tell you how I got you here. There are specific tactics I use. And you can use them, too, for your business or blog or anything. But I'll get back to that. First you need an idea. And there needs to be a demand for that idea. Next, you should be wondering, "Is my idea any good?" Probably not. Or maybe it is. You could be much smarter than me. Most of my ideas don't lead to anything. But a few have. Like StockPickr, the company I built and sold for millions before almost destroying myself and wanting to die. If you're an idea machine, you already know how to come up with ideas. Scaling an idea is more challenging. Results don't just appear. You need traction. You need to grow and acquire new customers. My guest today, Gabriel Weinberg, author of Traction: How Any Startup Can Achieve Explosive Customer Growth and CEO of Duck Duck Go, is the king of results -- search results that is. That's what Duck, Duck, Go does. It is a search engine and it's stealing millions of customers from Google. It takes some sort of voodoo mastermind to figure out how to beat Google at their own game. Gabriel challenges the status quo. He's part of that rare breed of people who believe nothing is impossible. Now DuckDuckGo is pretty huge. But why would anyone want to challenge Google? That's what I wanted to find out. And I'll tell you why in a second. But let's get back to my secret. In 33 minutes and 22 seconds, you can know my preferred method to scaling your business. Or you can just skip to the 33:22 mark in today's interview. You might be surprised to find out how I scaled Choose Yourself - how I got traction. But if you're not looking for shortcuts, listen to the whole interview. You'll get an all-inclusive, complete breakdown on how to sell and scale your best ideas. Gabriel goes over every marketing tactic, nineteen to be exact. If you're resourceful, you can use them to start building your wealth for the New Year. And in his book, Gabriel and Justin Mares give you marketing tips from the masters, including Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, Kayak founder Paul English, and more than a dozen others. Listen today to hear Gabriel break down the best tactics for every stage of your business. You'll also hear why he wasn't happy with Google, and how he started today's superior search engine, in addition to how you and thousands of other people got here. And how you can start selling and scaling. Ready, set... (duck, duck) go. ------------What do YOU think of the show?
