Jim and Ray welcome former Ambassador to Singapore Frank Lavin--now the Founder and CEO of Export Now, a firm that helps companies do business in China. Frank explains why he believes economic decoupling from China is unwise, and why he believes that China's 2001 accession to the World Trade Organization was not a mistake but instead forced Beijing to make important reforms that benefited U.S. businesses. Our guest emphasizes the importance of balancing geopolitical considerations with business decisions, and advocates for a positive U.S. trade policy of collaboration with like-minded nations rather than over-focusing on adversarial relationships with countries like China. The discussion also rolls around to the evolution of U.S. trade policy, the potential implications of increased tariffs under Donald Trump, and the challenges posed by China's rise. It explores the history of trade agreements, the current political climate surrounding free trade, and the impact of China's economic strategies on global markets.Frank emphasizes the importance of openness and collaboration in trade, while also addressing the need for defensive measures against unfair practices. He concludes with a call for proactive leadership in U.S. trade relations and the potential for future agreements.

This week on China Corner Office, Chris Marquis talks to Frank Lavin, former U.S. Ambassador to Singapore who is chairman and founder of Export Now, a company focused on helping international brands enter China. Frank recently published The Smart Business Guide to China E-Commerce, a highly readable book that has many great points and recommendations about the topic. In this podcast, Frank not only discusses key features of China's e-commerce ecosystem and important platforms like Alibaba, JD, and Pinduoduo, but importantly, how and why mid-tier American companies should focus exclusively on such channels as opposed to more traditional brick and mortar presence. Frank also provides detail on how despite U.S.-China trade tensions, many US firms have experienced their best year ever in the China market, and also why the phenomenon of dàigòu 代购, or gray market sales can be an international brand's best friend in China. For more on this topic, please check out Frank Lavin's recently published: The Smart Business Guide to China E-Commerce See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to the The Voice of Retail, I'm your host Michael LeBlanc, and this podcast is brought to you in conjunction with Retail Council of Canada. This is a special edition podcast focussed on the coronavirus, COVID-19 and the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a business risk.   Beyond the human cost to people around the world, the disruptive potential to retailers in Canada is real.  At this early stage for most it can best be described as a “known-unknowns”, but for some retailers they are feeling the early impacts calling down sales for international locations, late shipments, missed buying trips and perceptible decreases in Chinese tourist-oriented sales in their outlets. In this episode I'm going to focus on the the Supply Chain Delays and Cost Increases.  For most retailers this is a 90day+ issue; the goods on offer made or sourced in China between now and spring at retail are mostly already on the water or in warehouses domestically. Continued delays however mean bottlenecks at shipping ports or air freight, both of which mean more delays and cost, including promotional plans and long-lead marketing programs (e.g. flyer production).   To help us get our arms around this I brought together three experts for this podcast.First, I welcome Frank Lavin, Founder and Chairman, Export Now back to the podcast to set the stage.   With decades of the most senior experience in Asia, including U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore and working in the White House as an undersecretary of commerce for Asia, he brings a unique and rare voice to the current state of affairs.Second, Sarah Barnes-Humphrey, retail supply chain expert and host of the most excellent podcast, Let's Talk Supply Chain.   Sarah helps us zone in on the retail issues and scope and scale of the issues.Lastly, Audrey Ross, Logistics & Customs Specialist for Orchard customer beauty, a Canadian based global supplier and maker of cosmetics with offices in China and with a global sourcing footprint, brings it all together and gives us a  day-to-day perspective dealing with this crisis in their work supplying retailers in North America and around the world. But first, let's jump right into my conversation with Frank, live from Singapore.******Thanks to Frank, Sarah and Audrey for being my guests on this episode.  Well  Now let's hit the highlights of the retail news in Canada and around the world with Retail This Week for the week of February 17th, 2020That's a wrap on this edition of The Voice of Retail.  If you liked this podcast you can subscribe on Apple iTunes or your favourite podcast platform, please rate and review, and be sure and recommend to a friend or colleague in the retail industry.I'm Michael LeBlanc, Founder and President of M.E. In this episode we’re looking back at the Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump meet-up in Singapore. It now feels like the distant past. And that’s the point. This news cycle is more like a news cyclone. There was much ado about the meeting of the two corpulent men, but now that the dust has settled, what do we have to show for it? To get perspective we reached out to two key members of the Inside Asia Network, both of whom have a deep knowledge of the region and who also happen to have been on the ground in Singapore. We first speak with Steve Okun. He’s Senior Advisor at McClarty Associates and for the last twelve years has served as Governor of the Singapore Chamber of Commerce. He’s a trusted source who happened also to have a ringside seat at the festivities. Was this one of those surrealistic moments that defied logic and protocol, or was it the first small step toward the giant leap of opening North Korea? And what was it like in Singapore when the circus arrived? Next we talk with Frank Lavin, Founder and Chairman of Export Now and a former US Ambassador to Singapore. Frank is based in Singapore, and, as you might expect, found himself pulled in by CNN and others to comment. I put the same question to him that I put to Steve Okun: Is the Trump/Kim meeting to be seen as a window of opportunity, or further evidence that we are living in the Matrix where perception and reality have parted ways? And, again, what was it like on the ground?
