In this final episode we look back with Becky and Craig on their personal pet behaviour Odyssey and how far they have come. They share the insights they have gained and how this has helped to built their relationship. They discuss the many positives of the journey but also the challenges they met on the way. When we ask clients to do something it is important that we support them throughout the process. What a client needs at this time is not the same as what they need to encourage initial action. At this time things like reinforcement for progress, become particularly important, as do helpful relationships that support the change process. Again this is something that is perhaps not as widely appreciated as it should be. This aspect of treatment forms the basis of the current episode. Becky and Craig discuss the highs and lows of their Odyssey. They also share with us, what it was that made them think they were making progress. They thus provide invaluable insight for others. What an owner sees as an important marker of success and what a clinician sees as important in this regard are not always the same initially. We must listen to our clients and help them achieve meaningful goals. Individualising treatment for a given client and their pet is essential and so we have to go beyond the theoretical techniques used in human and animal behaviour modification. In the last episode we looked at the COM-B model of human behaviour change. COM-B stands for Capability, Opportunities and Motivations underpinning human Behaviour change. We also introduced the Theoretical Domains, like an individual's knowledge, beliefs about their capabilities, emotions, ability to visualize a goal and so forth and the Intervention Functions used to make these as optimal as we can for the client. In this episode we return to the dog side of things in our discussion with Becky and Craig . We talk about the importance of avoidance of triggers, and diary keeping but expand on two protocols we have developed at Lincoln. The safe haven and sensitive carer routines. These may be somewhat different to other versions of the protocol that are commonly discussed by behaviourists and trainers. It is important to pay attention to certain details if they are to work as we would hope. When choosing interventions it is important that they are right for that client and so we introduce the concept of the APEASE criteria, from the human behaviour change literature, for assessing their suitability. These are important considerations: I detail here what each letter in the acronym APEASE stands for: A is for acceptabilityP for practicalE for effectiveA for affordableS for safeEquitable, i.e is it fairWe discuss these further in the current episode, and the last E is an important ethical consideration and may be where some quick fixes fall down. In this episode we talk about the process of implementing treatment. In particular we discuss the less often discussed issue of human behaviour change, with a focus on how we consider the underpinning capability, opportunities and motivation of a client to enable more effective change. We introduce the theoretical domains framework. This is a synthesis of lots of different evidence based approaches for bringing about human behaviour change. At its simplest it is a list of about 14 different ways in which we can help people bring about change. By doign this we can more accurately set expectations for change. Find out more by listening to the episode, and please do give us a rating if you have enjoyed the episode. In this episode we pick up from where we finished Episode 1. We discuss in more detail the minefield that is the unregulated fields of animal training and behaviour. We explore Becky's and Craig's experience of seeking help from various sources for the behaviours that Drax was exhibiting. We discuss how things progressed; but more importantly, how they each felt on this part of their Odyssey. We highlight the stresses and strains associated with owning a pet with problem behaviour and introduce the listener to the value ofa validated ‘pet caregiver burden' questionnaire. Milly and Daniel discuss how important this can be to us, as clinicians, in hleping us understand the nature of the stresses felt by a client, and how this can shape the focus of the assistance we give as a result. We illustrate this by discussing the results of the questionnaire which Becca completed for us. This described how she felt before coming to the Lincoln Animal Behaviour Clinic, and also how things changed as we made progress. This not only helped us, but Becca also explains how important this was to her, Craig and ultimately Drax too!You can read a bit more about the questionnaire here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1558787823000576Footnote for those seeking professional support: If you are in the UK and would like help with your pet's behaviour, we encourage you to seek professional advice. Episode 1: Welcoming a dog into your life – the Odyssey beginsIn this episode we introduce you to Becky, Craig and Drax. We find out how Drax came into Becky's and Craig's life, including the emotional background that so often underpins the decision to acquire a pet. We discuss their love and joy with Drax during these early days in their home, before they felt that things were not turning out quite how they had expected and hoped. Their love and commitment persisted, but the joy became tinged with sadness and frustration as they started to feel there was a problem that was seriously impacting their quality of life. This led them to navigating the unfamilar and unchartered territory of training and behaviour, as they tried to get professional advice and support. Who should they turn to for help? Armed with a BA in psychology from CWRU, Dr. Best was pursuing PhD programs in neuroscience when CWRU extended an invitation to its dental school, altering the trajectory of his journey. Yet, even amidst the transition, his dedication to the pursuit of knowledge remained unwavering and he has emerged as an authority in the world of dental technology and materials. Most recently, Dr. Best was interviewed in the March 2024 issue of Inside Dentistry regarding the benefits of glass ionomer over other dental restorative materials. After earning his Master of Science in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Best turned down a faculty position at CWRU to follow his then girlfriend and now wife, Wendy Freedman, Esq. (WRC '73) to her work in New York City. Since then, Dr. Best has been a part-time faculty member at Columbia University for 45 years and served as the pediatric dentist at Sloan Kettering for 12 years where he specialized in treating bone marrow transplant patients. Dr. Best ran his own pediatric practice for 41 years and has served as a past OCE examiner for the American Board. Presently, Dr. Best is one of the section editors of the Journal of Pediatric Dentistry and holds academic appointments at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. At the invitation of Dr. Gerald Ferretti, Dr. Best has also been serving his alma mater as a Clinical Professor at Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine since 2011. Dr. Best is board certified in Pediatric Dentistry and is a Past President of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Past Chairman of the Foundation of the College of Diplomates. His multifaceted contributions to the field have earned him recognition as a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and both the International and American College of Dentists. Amidst the achievements, Dr. Best remains grounded, attributing his success to the mentors and peers who shaped his journey. He expresses gratitude to former Dean Thomas DeMarco, Dr. John Gerstenmaier, Dr. Larry Fox and of course, current Dean Dr. Kenneth Chance. As a student, Dr. Best said he was always able to talk to the Dean and other department chairs whenever he needed to, and the Dean and the school supported his effort to attempt both a masters in biomedical engineering and a doctor of dental surgery degree at the same time. Dr. Best's commitment to giving back to his alma mater echoes the spirit of gratitude and camaraderie that defined his formative years. Dr. Best says of his class, “We had so much fun in dental school. That's why I come back to teach and support the school. I don't think students at other schools had as much fun. And I always feel appreciated here.” In addition to Dr. Best's expertise in glass ionomers, he has much to share about the use of AI in caries diagnosis, the dangers of blue light, and the potential hazards of air-powered instruments. In the labyrinth of innovation, Dr. Best has become a well regarded and sought after mentor and coach guiding the next generation of dental professionals.

It is based on Misha's reporting from inside Ukraine, real events from the war as well as the complex history between Russia and Ukraine. ABOUT THE SUN WILL RISE: Oksana Shevchenko remembers life as it once was. Before the War. Before the Invaders stripped her freedom away. Before the Motherland decided to take what wasn't hers, and call it her own. As the leader of the local Union, thirty-one-year-old Oksana has met her match in enemy officer Lieutenant General Mikhailovich, who will stop at nothing to win glory for the Motherland – and himself. After he captures the city of Heryvin, the young, ambitious Mikhailovich forces Oksana and her Union comrades to operate the local nuclear power plant for the Motherland's gain, while sapping its capacity to operate safely. It's a nightmare for a city still reeling from the disastrous Accident that took the lives of dozens – including Oksana's father – decades before. Caught between her loyalty to those resisting the Occupation and a nuclear catastrophe threatened by increasingly impossible orders, Oksana must find a way to defeat Mikhailovich before his sadistic determination leads him to doing the unthinkable. But Oksana might not be alone in her fight, because war makes heroes out of the ordinary and unlikely. A grandmother defiantly waving the colour of her nation. A principal offering a safe haven for students dreaming of brighter futures. A young adult choosing courage in the face of mortal danger. A country quietly showing that glory belongs to those who dare to hold on against impossible odds. Because one day soon, the sun will set on dictators. And the sun will rise on freedom once again. Inspired by true events in Ukraine, The Sun Will Rise is a tribute to those bravely fighting for their freedom – and ours. PRAISE FOR THE SUN WILL RISE: Stirring, brilliant, soulful. An Orwellian tale, evoking the very essence of Ukraine's fight for freedom and our right to exist” — Kira Rudyk, leading Ukrainian Member of Parliament. “A love letter to the human spirit, Zelinsky's deeply personal coverage of Russia's invasion comes to life in this stunning first novel. An affecting story about the humanity behind the news” — Wayne Swan, President of the Australian Labor Party, former deputy prime minister and world finance minister of the year. “Zelinsky's outstanding journalism transported Russian brutality and Ukrainian bravery from the battlefront to our homes. Now, this story gives us a reason to hope” — Ambassador, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine's Ambassador to Australia. “Misha Zelinsky has penned a gripping book which although fictional, depicts the courage, strength and conviction of the Ukrainian people fighting for their freedom and sovereignty. Once you pick up The Sun Will Rise, you will not be able to put it down. It is an exciting read. — Ambassador Paula J. Dobriansky, former Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs (2001-2009) “A gripping page-turner, set in Ukraine in the wake of Russia's invasion. Misha Zelinsky has captured the bravery and humanity of Ukrainians living under occupation, as well as the callousness and cynicism of Vladimir Putin's soldiers. Original, compelling, and topical, The Sun Will Rise is an impressive novel which brings to life recent history.” — Luke Harding, award-winning foreign correspondent with the Guardian and New York Times best selling author of books including Invasion: Russia's Bloody War and Ukraine's Fight for Survival, shortlisted for the Orwell prize. “Zelinsky has turned his superb war reportage into a riveting first novel, inspired by real people and events, but transcending them to convey the heart behind the conflict. If you want to know why Ukrainians fight and why it's our fight too, this is the place to start. Reminiscent of Disraeli—a novelist turned British statesman—a writer with such soul, who knows what makes people and countries great, would be a rare addition to our public life. — The Hon. Tony Abbott, 28th prime minister of Australia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
