Christopher Luxon: Prime Minister on the trade relationship with the UK, Pope Francis' death, meeting with King Charles

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London, just hours after the death of Pope Francis. Luxon confirmed he spoke to the King about the death of the Pope during his meeting, but would not divulge further details. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister said Luxon “enjoyed discussing New Zealand issues with the King”. Luxon said discussions with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in coming days will revolve around the Ukraine-Russia war and trade. He and Starmer will travel to meet New Zealand soldiers who are training Ukrainian troops. “I certainly welcome any efforts around just and lasting peace for Ukraine … we'll keep discussing options about being involved in peacekeeping support once the conflict concludes. “We, as a small country with limited resources a long way away, aren't going to be the ones to end that war, obviously … but, regardless, we stand beside our set of values which we think Ukraine, Zelensky, embodies.” Luxon said trade would also be a hot topic given the UK had recently become NZ's seventh-largest trading partner. “We just need to keep pushing forward on it and keep pushing food and beverage and tourism.” King Charles had a busy few days ahead of Luxon's arrival, with various Easter-related events. Late last week, he attended the annual Maundy Service, during which he awarded gifts to individuals in recognition of outstanding Christian service. Maundy Thursday takes place on the Thursday prior to Easter and commemorates the Washing of the Feet and the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. On Easter Sunday, Charles was joined by other members of the royal family at St George's Chapel in Windsor for a traditional church service. In his Easter message, the King said: “The abiding message of Easter is that God so loved the world – the whole world – that He sent His son to live among us to show us how to love one another, and to lay down His own life for others in a love that proved stronger than death. “There are three virtues that the world still needs – faith, hope and love. ‘And the greatest of these is love'. It is with these timeless truths in my mind, and my heart, that I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Easter.” Luxon met with the King for the first time at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October. The Prime Minister gave away little about what the pair discussed during that meeting, but said it was obvious King Charles had a “deep, deep affection for New Zealand” and was “very knowledgeable about a number of issues”. “It was a very natural conversation; it was just the two of us sitting outside and having a chat on a couple of seats.” This is Luxon's first visit to the UK as Prime Minister. He touched down late on Sunday night (NZT). Ahead of the trip, Luxon highlighted that trade was likely to be a key talking point. “New Zealand is a champion for free trade, and I look forward to talking to Sir Keir Starmer about what our countries can do together to support the rules-based trading system,” Luxon said. “The UK is one of NZ's closest and most trusted partners, and, for many Kiwis, it is where they base themselves on their OE. The UK is also important to NZ's prosperity. Our exports there grew by more than 20% in 2024 and are still growing.” Two-way trade with the UK, which NZ signed a free-trade agreement with in 2022, was worth $7.27 billion in the year ending December 2024, making it our seventh-largest trading partner. Summary In this episode of Develop This, Dennis Fraise speaks with Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association (APMA) in Canada. They discuss the historical ties between the Canadian and US automotive industries, the integration of the North American auto supply chain, the current state of tariffs and their impact on the industry, and the future of the Canadian auto parts sector. Flavio emphasizes the importance of collaboration and understanding between the two countries to navigate the complexities of trade and tariffs. Takeaways Flavio Volpe is the president of the APMA, representing Canada's automotive sector. The historical relationship between Canada and the US auto industries dates back to 1904. Canada plays a significant role in the North American auto supply chain, with many parts crossing borders multiple times. Tariffs imposed on auto parts can severely impact the industry, threatening jobs and production. The Canadian auto parts industry is intricately tied to US and Mexican operations, employing thousands across North America. Free trade agreements have allowed for significant investment and growth in the Canadian auto sector. The integration of the automotive supply chain means that parts come from various countries, not just the US and Canada. The future of the Canadian auto parts industry depends on maintaining strong trade relations with the US. Trust and collaboration are essential for navigating the current trade environment. The Canadian auto sector has a symbiotic relationship with the US, and both countries benefit from this partnership.

The United States has officially imposed broad tariffs on two of its largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, marking one of the most aggressive trade measures in recent history. With potential economic fallout looming, world leaders, economists, and businesses are scrambling to assess the impact of President Donald Trump's latest move. From Trade Deals to Trade Wars: How We Got HereDuring Trump's first term, his administration took a mixed approach to tariffs. While he aggressively targeted China with import duties — many of which remain under President Biden — his strategy with Canada and Mexico was more nuanced. Initial tariffs on specific industries such as lumber, steel, and aluminum eventually gave way to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a revised version of NAFTA that stabilized trade relations. However, with Trump back in the White House, he has revived concerns over trade imbalances, particularly with Canada and Mexico. On January 20th, Inauguration Day, Trump signed an executive order launching a review of USMCA, with findings due in April. But before that process could unfold, he moved forward with major tariff increases. On February 1st, Trump announced two executive orders imposing sweeping tariffs. Canadian imports now face a 25% tariff, with a lower 10% tariff on energy exports like oil and gas. Mexico has been hit with a flat 25% tariff on all imports. Though negotiations initially delayed the tariffs by 30 days, they have now gone into full effect, shaking up a $1.3 trillion annual trade relationship. To justify the tariffs, Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a legal framework typically used for sanctions. He linked the move to national security concerns, specifically citing fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.Sweeping Tariffs Hit North America HardThe response from Canada and Mexico has been swift and severe. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the tariffs as "absolutely unacceptable" and unveiled a $30 billion retaliatory tariff package, with plans for an additional $125 billion in tariffs within 21 days if the dispute is not resolved. Several Canadian provinces have announced bans on U.S. products, pulling American wine, beer, and liquor off store shelves. In Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a sharp protest but has not yet outlined a formal retaliation. However, Mexican officials have signaled that they may target key U.S. industries, including soybeans, pork, and beef exports.Domestically, the tariff decision has sparked significant economic concern. Stock markets tumbled following the announcement, and major retailers like Target and Best Buy have warned that prices on imported goods will rise sharply, with businesses passing the cost onto consumers.Economists overwhelmingly predict inflationary pressure, warning that tariffs could lead to a U.S. recession and further damage trade relations. The automotive industry is expected to see major price hikes, as will sectors reliant on steel and aluminum, energy resources, agriculture, and consumer goods such as electronics, clothing, and household appliances.Trump's Endgame: Tough Negotiation or Economic Gamble? These tariffs will likely be felt most harshly by Canada and Mexico, as the United States is their largest export market. Seventy-five percent of Canadian exports go to the U.S., while for Mexico, that number is even higher at 80%. By limiting these exports, Trump is exerting maximum pressure on both countries, but the strategy raises significant questions. Is he using tariffs as leverage to renegotiate USMCA? Does he expect Canada and Mexico to cave under economic strain? Or is this a broader shift toward economic protectionism, despite warnings from economists?Trump's decision could make or break his administration. While his supporters may see the move as a strong stance against unfair trade practices, rising prices and economic downturns could alienate voters — especially those who supported him for his stance on inflation control. The coming months will reveal whether these tariffs are a negotiation tool or a long-term policy shift. For now, both the U.S. and its North American neighbors brace for an economic showdown.Chapters* 00:00:00 - Introduction* 00:02:39 - Ukraine Mineral Deal Fallout* 00:06:35 - The Impact of Tariffs on Trade Relations* 00:17:22 - Consequences of Tariffs on the Economy* 00:22:15 - Interview with Bill Scher* 00:58:09 - Update introduction* 01:00:13 - J.D. We also delve into the evolution of micro mobility, from the early days of scooter dumping to a more strategic and community-integrated approach. It seems like the industry is finally finding its footing, with less public resistance and more focus on sustainable growth.Looking ahead, we get into the exciting possibilities of robotics and even personal aerial transportation. It's wild to think about the future of mobility extending beyond traditional vehicles to include delivery bots and maybe even personal bubble devices. Sean's vision really paints a picture of how innovation and technology could transform the way we move goods and services. It's clear that the definition of mobility is expanding, and the potential for growth is immense.Takeaways*   Ascend automates premium financing and collections.*   Sean Flood has a long history in micro mobility.*   The move to Ireland was prompted by a family decision.*   New ventures in mobility focus on hardware sales and subscriptions.*   Tariffs can drive inflation and impact pricing in the mobility sector.*   Micro mobility is evolving with less public resistance.*   Innovation in mobility is expected to grow significantly.*   The definition of mobility is expanding to include goods transportation.*   Personal aerial transportation could be a future reality.*   Stability is crucial for entrepreneurs in the mobility space.*   Litigation has significantly increased post-COVID, making it challenging to analyze trends.*   Battery safety regulations are becoming crucial due to the rise in fires caused by unsafe products.Chapters*   00:00 Revolutionizing Payments in Insurance*   01:19 Sean Flood's Journey in Micro Mobility*   02:42 Transitioning to Ireland and New Ventures*   04:03 The Future of Mobility: Strategies and Innovations*   06:00 Impact of Tariffs on the Mobility Industry*   14:04 The Evolution of Micro Mobility*   18:21 The Future of Mobility: Robotics and Aerial Transportation*   21:11 Litigation Trends Post-COVID*   24:53 The Impact of Battery Safety Regulations*   26:10 Wine and Risk: A Personal Touch*   30:11 Navigating Tariffs and Trade Relations*   34:24 AI and the Future of Jobs*   38:09 Sovereign Wealth Funds: A New Frontier?*   44:01 Product Recalls and Consumer SafetyConnect with RiskCellar:Website:https://www.riskcellar.com/Sean Flood:Ride Today Linkedin:https://www.linkedin.com/company/ridetoday/?originalSubdomain=ieBrandon Schuh:Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552710523314LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandon-stephen-schuh/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/schuhpapa/Nick Hartmann:LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickjhartmann/

The conversation also explores the potential short-term and long-term effects of tariffs on businesses and the economy. In this conversation, Ronald Dodson and Chase Davis delve into the complexities of inflation, tariffs, and economic policy. The Prime Minister has been with EU Leaders in Brussels intending to 're-set' the UK's position with the EU. The Government is seeking a veterinary agreement with the EU to free up trade in food and animal products - something some farmers and food businesses have been calling for.We visit the author of the Rock Review into Tenant Farming - Baroness Kate Rock is herself a tenant, farming 450 hectares of arable and a small beef herd with her father in Dorset. And under the new system of farm payments in England, farmers can be paid for improving their soils. But how to do it depends on local geology. We visit a farm in the Brecklands on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, where growing crops in the sandy, stony soils can be difficult at the best of times.Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons

From China's retaliatory measures against US firms to the impact of industrial overcapacity on global trade dynamics, this discussion offers a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing international businesses. Main Points and Takeaways: China is freezing the properties of 9 U.S. firms, including Lockheed Martin, in response to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. This reflects the geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China. Upcoming talks between U.S. and Chinese officials will focus on addressing concerns over China's industrial overcapacity and its impact on the global economy. However, the experts are skeptical these talks will resolve the underlying issues. China is selling U.S. Treasury bills and buying gold, potentially signaling preparations to take action against Taiwan, which could disrupt global supply chains. The White House is proposing changes to the de minimis exemption, which allows goods under $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free. This is aimed at addressing issues with e-commerce companies like Shein and Temu that are allegedly using forced labor. There is a need for greater consumer awareness and responsibility when it comes to forced labor issues in supply chains. This episode covers the role of US and Chinese domestic politics in the US-China relationship. There are many drivers of US-China strategic competition, and domestic politics is among them, and has become increasingly important, though it has not been well researched and analyzed in recent years. One reason for the lack of analysis on Chinese politics is that since Xi Jinping became China's top leader in 2012, domestic politics in China has become even more of black box than previously. Bonnie is joined by Dr. Evan Medeiros, who has recently published a pathbreaking study that seeks to update the understanding of political forces in China and the United States that are influencing the bilateral relationship. Medeiros is one of the world's leading experts on Chinese foreign policy. He is the Penner Family Chair in Asia studies and the Cling Family Distinguished Fellow in US-China Studies in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. The report we will discuss today is titled: "The New Domestic Politics of US-China Relations" and was published by the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis where Evan is a senior fellow for foreign policy. During the Obama administration, Evan was on the NSC staff, first as director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, and then as special assistant to the president and Senior Director for Asia.  Timestamps[02:14] Influence of Domestic Politics in the US and China[03:32] Differences between US and Chinese Domestic Politics[05:19] Weakening of Historical Forces for Stability[08:35] Most Important Driver of Change to America's China Policy[13:34] Xi Jinping Shaping Domestic Politics in China[19:38] Reversing the Downward Trend in US-China Relations[21:44] Close Connections between Domestic and Foreign Politics[24:49] Biden and Xi as Leaders in the Bilateral Relationship

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the China in the World podcast, Carnegie China is launching a series of lookback episodes, using audio clips from previous interviews to put current international issues in context. For the fifth and final episode in this series, the podcast looks back on 10 years of US-China trade relations. US-China trade ties have undergone significant changes since the launch of the China in the World podcast. In March 2012, the United States, the EU, and Japan filed a dispute at the World Trade Organization over China's quota on exporting rare earth metals. That same year, China's trade surplus with the U.S. reached an all-time high of $315 billion. In 2015, China became the largest bilateral trade partner of the U.S., surpassing Canada for the first time. In March 2018, the Trump administration announced sweeping tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese imports, kicking off the U.S.-China trade war. After bilateral negotiations with Beijing broke down in May 2019, the Trump administration raised tariffs from 10 to 25 percent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. Finally, in January 2020, the “Phase one” trade deal was signed, relaxing some U.S. tariffs and requiring China to import an additional $200 billion worth of American goods for the next two years. After coming to office in January 2021, the Biden administration maintained the Section 301 tariffs on China and, at the end of 2021, U.S. officials stated that China failed to meet its commitments under the Phase 1 trade deal. In 2023, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo travelled to China and agreed to establish working groups on commercial and financial issues. However, negotiations over structural economic issues such as subsidies, investment restrictions, and non-tariff barriers remain at a standstill. This episode helps shed light on the evolution of U.S.-China trade relations over the past 10 years.
