This episode of Out There features artist-led initiative Open, represented by two of the founding members Arnar Ásgerisson and Örn Alexander Ámundason. Open is both a shared artist studio and an artist run exhibition space. Founded and organized by artists Arnar Ágeirsson, Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, Una Margrét Árnadóttir and Örn Alexander Ámundason, Open is the groups studio space on a daily basis, that can be tucked away and transformed into an event, performance and exhibition platform according to the schedule and needs of the space and its occupants. Based in the old fishing district and harbour in the center of reykjavík, the initiative contributes to the lively exchange in the area and has provided necessary space for artists of all origins in the Icelandic art scene. Open has hosted a variety of exhibitions and events with local and international artists and collectives including Ghana based artist duo FOKN Bois, Expat, Lucky Three the Filipino/Icelandic artist collective and Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir to name a few exciting projects! We discuss the flexible format that Open works within, where responding to contemporary themes and critical dialogue is always possible and encouraged, the motives behind the initiative and where Open is headed. 

Ghanaian hip hop duo FOKN Bois use satire to convey important social commentary on religion, politics, and sexuality. In this episode, they share their experiences and the thoughts that have gone into music and the messages they deliver. The duo talks about their decision to rap and write in Pidgin English, which they say stems from needing to “express more of self” to reach their own people. For them, rapping and writing in Pidgin English “brought a new sense of freedom and originality”. Wanlov and M3nsa also discuss their reputations for being rebellious and the need to incorporate humor into their conscious rhymes; and how they sneak “difficult conversations” into their comedic rhyme schemes to reduce resistance to the message that they come to deliver to their people. As Wanlov the Kubolor exclaims: “It's extremely cathartic to be able to turn your problems into laughter”. Additionally, in responding to student questions, FOKN Bois share with the students their creative process and influences, and the things that keep them going. Pour SessionLab, Hortense Volle a rencontré à Angoulême, au festival Musique Métisses, les irrévérencieux rappeurs ghanéens Wanlov the Kubolor et M3nsa du groupe Fokn Bois. Un podcast original avec des beats entêtants et un humour décapant ! À écouter au casque (audio 3D). Les Fokn Bois, ce sont Wanlov the Kubolor et M3nsa, deux quadragénaires qui ont grandi au Ghana, un pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest, situé dans le golf de Guinée. C'est une ancienne colonie britannique, entourée de trois anciennes colonies françaises : la Côte d'Ivoire, le Togo et, au nord, le Burkina Faso. Les Fokn Bois, ce sont deux rappeurs conscients qui ont choisi l'humour pour dénoncer les travers d'une société ghanéenne profondément conservatrice et pour tenter de faire évoluer les mentalités. Depuis Cos Ov Moni, le premier film musical en pidgin (l'argot des africains anglophones) qui a scellé leur duo en 2010, Wanlov et M3nsa ont sorti une série d'albums dans lesquels ils se moquent de tout et de tout le monde, à commencer par eux-mêmes ! En témoigne leur dernier projet Afrobeats Lol : 7 titres à travers lesquels ils tournent en dérision leur génération (qui à tendance à verser dans le matérialisme et la superficialité) et eux-mêmes en train de faire de l'afrobeats, cette pop africaine qui fait fureur sur le continent et au-delà (à ne pas confondre avec l'afrobeat de Fela). Début septembre, à Angoulême, dans le sud-ouest de la France, le festival Musiques Métisses qui fêtait sa 45e édition, donnait carte blanche aux garçons (accompagnés sur scène du claviériste hongrois Andras Weil) et nous offrait la possibilité de les rencontrer, enfin ! C'est à Angoulême que se tient la 45ᵉ édition du festival Musiques Métisses (ex Jazz en France) sur le parvis des Chais Magelis, en bordure de la Charente. Dans le cadre de la saison Africa2020, cette édition spéciale est emmenée par les Ghanéens FOKN Bois à qui le festival a donné une carte blanche. M3nsa et Wanlov the Kubolor ont invité les Lipstick Queens, un groupe ghanéen 100% féminin ou encore Agorvey, qui vit dans la rue vers le cimetière à Accra. Tous ces artistes sont présents dans notre dernière #SessionLive angoumoisine.Et ce sont les musiciennes de Lipstick Queens qui ouvrent le bal.     Les Lipsticks Queens, groupe 100% féminin est rejoint pour l'occasion par le timbre chaud de St Beryl pour un show entre afrobeat et gospel teinté de soul, de funk et de jazz. Résidentes du fameux club +233 à Accra, les reines de Lipstick Queens font opérer leur magie tous les mercredis depuis 10 ans ! This month we're featuring a conversation with Ghanaian artist Wanlov the Kubolor. In the interview we talk about Wanlov the Kubolor's experiences, his music, the controversies, and his evolution into Wanlov the Kubolor, the African Gypsy. Wanlov the Kubolor is a smart, introspective artist who is very much aware of the social relevance of his music. He often makes social commentary, whether via his music or social media, and infuses that social commentary with humor. Wanlov's humor (and he's genuinely funny) often has fans laughing before realizing that there is a message in the madness. Wanlov has detractors, people who take issue with his music or behavior. But, agree or disagree with his views, Wanlov the Kubolor is not afraid of expressing himself in unconventional ways. Wanlov' the Kubolor's music reflects his diverse background and experiences. It is difficult to put Wanlov the Kubolor into one category of music. He is an MC, but he also blends several different sounds and styles in his music. He's a versatile artists who has crafted a career as a successful, internationally known artist.
