In this episode of Visual Intonation, we delve into the captivating stories of two pioneering Ghanaian artists whose work has redefined the African visual arts landscape: Andy Madjitey and John Kwame Markin. These two visionaries have not only mastered the art of storytelling through photography and cinematography, but they have also been at the forefront of blending traditional African narratives with modern-day creativity, shaping the future of African visual culture. Andy Madjitey's journey began on the streets of Accra, where his love for photography first took root. His camera became his passport to capturing the vibrant, raw energy of the Ghanaian youth, offering a glimpse into the pulse of the city. But Andy's story didn't stop there. His passion for visual storytelling evolved into filmmaking, where he merged his photographic skills with the art of narrative video. Andy's ability to seamlessly blend the old and the new, the traditional and the modern, became the hallmark of his work, allowing him to create content that resonates on a deeper, more personal level. His collaborations have brought him into contact with some of the biggest names in the industry. From his groundbreaking work on 'Palmwine Diaries' to his experimental short 'Gbonyo Party' in 2023, Andy's work spans genres and challenges conventions. At the helm of La Scène Grande Studios, Andy has become a mentor and a leader in his community, creating a platform for emerging creatives and amplifying voices often left unheard. His collaborations with brands and artists across Africa, and his global connections to storytellers like Melina Matsoukas—known for her work on 'Formation' by Beyoncé and 'We Found Love' by Rihanna—reflect Andy's ever-expanding influence in both African and international creative circles. Central to Andy's creative journey are the mentors who have shaped his vision, including Nana Kofi Asihene, who recognized Andy's potential from the start, and Wanlov, whose resourceful, gear-agnostic approach to filmmaking continues to inspire Andy's own work. These relationships, alongside his extensive experience, have propelled Andy into the spotlight as a key figure in the African filmmaking scene, where he continues to push boundaries and redefine the role of cinema in exploring complex social themes like identity, community, and tradition. On the other hand, John Kwame Markin, known in the industry as KwameBlack, is a cinematographer and director who has built a reputation for creating some of the most visually stunning and technically sophisticated work in the industry. With over a decade of experience, John has worked on a diverse range of projects, both locally and internationally, collaborating with directors, brands, and creative teams to bring their visions to life. His exceptional eye for detail and his expertise in lighting, composition, and camera movement have made him one of the most sought-after cinematographers in Ghana. John's professional journey has been marked by his work on a variety of high-profile projects, including commercials for global brands like Google, Nestlé, and Mastercard, as well as critically acclaimed films. His partnership with Andy Madjitey on several projects, includiSupport the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

Ghanaian hip hop duo FOKN Bois use satire to convey important social commentary on religion, politics, and sexuality. In this episode, they share their experiences and the thoughts that have gone into music and the messages they deliver. The duo talks about their decision to rap and write in Pidgin English, which they say stems from needing to “express more of self” to reach their own people. For them, rapping and writing in Pidgin English “brought a new sense of freedom and originality”. Wanlov and M3nsa also discuss their reputations for being rebellious and the need to incorporate humor into their conscious rhymes; and how they sneak “difficult conversations” into their comedic rhyme schemes to reduce resistance to the message that they come to deliver to their people. As Wanlov the Kubolor exclaims: “It's extremely cathartic to be able to turn your problems into laughter”. Additionally, in responding to student questions, FOKN Bois share with the students their creative process and influences, and the things that keep them going. This week we caught up with Ghanaian-Romanian musician and activist, Wanlov The Kubolor. Wanlov shed light on the laws Ghanaian MPs are currently trying to put in place, which will criminalise the promotion of LGBT+ rights. ...and this is just the start of a chain of unjust and inhumane laws that are set to follow.

During this pandemic, I have already observed behaviors dictated by privilege and colonial mindset making people forget what matters as human being. On of my heroes Vittorio Arrigoni, an Italian reporter, pacifist, activist who died kidnapped and brutally killed in Gaza while fighting for the dignity of the Palestinians, used to say: “Stay Human.”If we don’t stay human, COVID-19 is not the worst thing that can happen to us.Share | Follow | Subscribe Song Credits: Special thanks to Wanlov for use of his songs as intro and outro music. This month we're featuring a conversation with Ghanaian artist Wanlov the Kubolor. In the interview we talk about Wanlov the Kubolor's experiences, his music, the controversies, and his evolution into Wanlov the Kubolor, the African Gypsy. Wanlov the Kubolor is a smart, introspective artist who is very much aware of the social relevance of his music. He often makes social commentary, whether via his music or social media, and infuses that social commentary with humor. Wanlov's humor (and he's genuinely funny) often has fans laughing before realizing that there is a message in the madness. Wanlov has detractors, people who take issue with his music or behavior. But, agree or disagree with his views, Wanlov the Kubolor is not afraid of expressing himself in unconventional ways. Wanlov' the Kubolor's music reflects his diverse background and experiences. It is difficult to put Wanlov the Kubolor into one category of music. He is an MC, but he also blends several different sounds and styles in his music. He's a versatile artists who has crafted a career as a successful, internationally known artist. His solo albums are Green Card, Yellow Card, Brown Card: African Gypsy, and Orange Card: Fruitopian Raps Wanlov is also one half of the group Fokn Bois (his partner is M3nsa), which has released two films film Coz ov Moni and Coz ov Moni 2. A truly global podcast this week, with music coming in from as far afield as Ghana, Iran, and Israel. We have new music from closer to home too, with some jazzy goodness from On the Corner records, there's also the new one from Colin Stetson's Ex Eye project, techno from Mighty Lord Deathman, and rock sounds from We Wild Blood.
We visit one of the world's last untamed natural and musical wildernesses: The Guyanas. Riding along bumpy jungle roads and in dugout canoes, Afropop producer Marlon Bishop travels from Suriname to French Guiana for the Transamazoniennes Festival, located in the remote border town of Saint-Laurent-Du-Maroni. We enjoy the region's fascinating cultural stew, where French Creole, Maroon, Amerindian, Hindu, Javanese, and Dutch elements all mingle together on the outer fringes of the Amazon and hear styles like kaseko, bigi pokoe, aleke and kawina. We'll speak with local stars Prince Koloni, Little Guerrier and Chris Combete, as well as visiting acts such as self-proclaimed "African gypsy" Wanlov the Kubolor and polyglot rap crew Nomadic Massive. This show is hosted by two of Jamaica's most outspoken secular humanists - Clive Forrester, linguist and professor at York University in Toronto, and Hilaire Sobers, human rights lawyer in Washington DC. We have spent copious amounts of time debating with and challening the notion that Christian privelege should proceed unchecked in Jamaica, and have successfully managed to rally a group of other secularists to collaborate on a publication (forthcoming 2013). This radio show provides a medium in which skeptics can discuss matters of science, critical thinking, religious imposition, and the seperation of church and state all from a Jamaican perspective, but playing close attention to the interconnectedness on the global landscape. Tune in as we tackle the big questions each and every Sunday at 12:30EST (1:30PM Jamaican time) - lively banter, music and trivia, probing questions... we are Yardie Skeptics.
