Minding the Gap is a 2018 documentary film directed by Bing Liu, which chronicles the lives and friendships of three young men growing up in Rockford, Illinois who are united by their love of skateboarding.Kevin and Mike watched this (pretty amazingly great) movie and discuss, in an atypically heavy episode of what is normally a deeply silly podcast, how the movie manages to weave together themes of cycles of violence, growing up in America, race, class, and more. We watch a lot of dumb movies for this podcast so it was a refreshing change of pace to be presented with something so well-made and meaningful. The movie also has a shit-ton of skateboarding in it, so we talk about that, too. This episode has a content warning for discussion of domestic violence. Hosted on Acast. This gathering is all about the space in between. The gap, if you will and how our sense of spaciousness is often limited. In this gathering we discuss the infinite space within and how knowing it, is a way of better connecting with the whole of the universe and with our divine purpose. In fact, understanding the infinite nature of space is to understand more clearly how to take action in our daily lives. Davin utilizes a reading from Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth to supplement this meditation and contemplation. --- If you would like to join live, please visit: SIT CLUB If you would like to donate to Davin as an energetic exchange for these offerings, please do so here: DONATE -- Born out of the pandemic, Sit Club began in September of 2020 and continues every Sunday morning at 10am CT. Typically an hour in length, an intimate group of all ages, genders and races, from all over the world gathers on Zoom to sit in guided meditation, contemplate a reading and then share in conversation. Each gathering is centered around a spiritual theme chosen and guided by Davin. Youngs Buddhism is often the framework through which the readings and practices are approached, but no particular religious or philosophical ideology is subscribed to. There are no requirements, special skills or abilities that are necessary to attend. Just an open heart and a desire to connect with a community of seekers.

This week, we answer a question from a new listener who has recently begun to paint. Eric is wondering how to make the leap from copying images to making his own unique work. This question sparked a discussion about the ways in which artists find their own unique path. For us, this has included gathering visual references, noticing (and valuing) our own preferences, trusting our instincts, learning about other artists, and finding ways to learn in-person. For beginners there is always a gap between what we want to create and what we are capable of creating, and this gap can feel frustrating. In this episode, we encourage a different way of looking at the issue because learning to enjoy the process of discovery can become a true and enduring source of joy in your life. In this conversation, I share the importance of Minding the Gap. Many, many years ago, I had the privilege of meeting and hearing Marguerite Patten, the British Home Economist, Chef, food writer and broadcaster, share her life and leadership story. At the end, one of the audience asked her, “What would be your top tip to people?” and she replied, “Mind the Gap”. She was at this time in a wheelchair and had spoken about the challenges that she experienced on a daily basis of not being able to get about having been someone who thought nothing of jumping on and off a train to London from her local station. In response to the question, she went on to share with us that it was on one of these occasions, jumping on a train, when she had not got the full measure of the gap between the platform and the train. And she had fallen down into the gap causing herself much damage. She spoke of being grateful that there had been help on hand and commented on the kindness of strangers, shown towards her in particular, of a young person who had leaped to her rescue. And so she concluded, my top tip to you all is to mind the gap, to pay attention to be present in the moment to yourself and to what is around you, especially when it is already familiar to you. Her message resonated with me to mind the gap between and in the many areas of my life, in particular, the gaps that are thresholds, the spaces between one thing and the next, and the gaps, which can be good, providing we notice and are present to them as we move and transition. For example, from one meeting to the next, from one conversation to the next. Making time to be present, to notice the thresholds and to make space of ourselves is all part of minding the gap.

Part 3 of JAMIE'S HISTORY OF AMERICAN WINE (aka "Jimbo Jambo's Viticultural History of These Here United States") How is this bold California Zinfandel a time machine? What is the “refined technique” on display in this Oscar-nominated documentary? Will Jamie be able to convince Scott that this wine is more “mouth filling” than other wines? Is the cliche “the city is another character” just a different way of saying the movie has terroir? All that, PLUS the return of Wife Takes! Just gotta press play, yo. CW: MINDING THE GAP and this episode include discussions of domestic abuse. MINDING THE GAP (2018) is directed by Bing Liu. It is currently available to stream on Hulu. On this episode, I discuss spending my summer vacation in London and why it's one of my favourite cities. We recorded the Marie Antoinette ep and Kelly goes to edit it and now the Best of 2010 eps are there! What the effing heck?! So anyway here they are, all available at the same time because we're still trying to move on with our lives.
