Escuchar audio

Rod Serling singing Christmas carols, garden variety anxiety, and the dog show opener for a Beastie Boys concert. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer) OKONSKI Entrance Music [RELEASE DATE: 2/28/2025]- https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski "After nearly two years, Okonski returns with Entrance Music — an album that finds the trio at the height of their improvisational prowess and celebrating the spontaneous and meditative. On the heels of 2023's debut Magnolia, pianist and leader Steve Okonski has reconvened long-time musical collaborators (Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) for another session in the spirit of artists like the Bad Plus, Gerald Clayton, and The Breathing Effect. Ultimately Entrance Music serves as an invitation to early hours, where songs linger in the doorway, announcing their presence before returning to the air, in a meticulous drift into the next. Recorded over a five day session, Entrance Music was one of the first albums committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole's studio in Loveland, OH. “It was a new setup, but with Terry behind the dials it was very familiar,” says Okonski. “I can't emphasize enough how much Terry feels like a fourth member [of the band] because of the space he's curating, the energy he is bringing, and the production ideas.” The energy and sound created with the Colemine label head at the helm makes for a listening experience equally at home with ECM or Stones Throw catalogs. From the rippling notes of the pastoral opener, “October,” Entrance Music is lush with anticipation, both band and listener feeling the tension in the tranquility — where the interplay of jazz improvisation and boom bap beats never shortchanges the musicianship but the talent is ever in service of the song. While the band does not play together as often as they would like, not much time is needed for the three to lock in. Montgomery's bass opening to “Passing Through” bends and moves with a singular meditative grace before piano and percussion joins the daylight filling a room with breath and light. If Magnolia resonated with last calls and late nights, Entrance Music counters with early mornings and first cups of coffee. Whereas much of the debut resonates with his time in New York, Entrance Music “feels a little less ‘on the streets at 2 A.M.' and a little more nature-based…a little more ethereal,” says Okonski. “It's definitely age, environment, and family — all of that does come through in the music.”" Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections Merch: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/merch Durand Jones & The Indications: Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/durand Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Aaron Frazer Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

The deplaning playlist, the matter of subtraction, and forgoing the visual aspect of the television show “Succession.” Aaron Frazer (Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer, Okonski) Aaron Frazer - Full Performance (LIVE on 88.5FM The SoCal Sound)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj6xrZpMsaA&t=1201s "“Into The Blue is the clearest portrait of who I am as an artist. It's me through and through,” says multi-instrumentalist Aaron Frazer. Following his acclaimed 2021 debut, Into the Blue is expansive- a daring blend of soul, psychedelia, spaghetti western, disco, gospel and hip-hop, representing the impressive range of Frazer's sonic talents. Frazer maintains the unmistakable falsetto and classic songwriting he's known for, but plants Into the Blue firmly in the now with a hip-hop mentality at its core, weaving together genres and production techniques to form something new. The opener, “Thinking of You,” is harmony-laden soul drawing inspiration from legendary Harlem trio Black Ivory over a bed of strings. “Lonely nights like this, still I feel your kiss,” Frazer coos nostalgically in his high register. Later, on “Time Will Tell,” he plaintively considers the end of a relationship, “trying to figure out // how love went from sweet to sour.” Into The Blue was conceived, like so many classic records, out of heartbreak. Following the end of a long relationship, Frazer moved cross-country from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and embarked on a journey that's reflected in the album's themes of grief, loneliness, and searching for healing. “Into The Blue really means heading into the unknown. That has been the last year of my life and I'm still in the blue,” Frazer explains. “But there are also songs here that celebrate love and the giddiness of a new relationship and all that. That's part of a breakup to me, processing the whole thing, remembering the things that were right as much as the things that were wrong.” The title track, “Into The Blue”, is a haunting, resolute anthem, combining cinematic strings and tough-as-nails breakbeats as Frazer heads west. “Here I go, to a place where the broken heart knows,” he sings. “It's all I can do. Back into the blue.” Frazer wrote on every track and played several live instruments on the album. “Payback” is an explosive dancefloor heater, featuring shimmering tambourines and driving" Excerpt from https://aaronfrazermusic.com Aaron Frazer: Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/album/introducing Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron-frazer Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com Durand Jones & The Indications Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp.com/merch Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.secretlystore.com/private-space-durand-jones-and-the-indications Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

He mans the six-string, the vocals, and the mixing for the band, Low Forest, and he's my guest for Episode No. 132.Josh and I talked growing up and education, Missouri-style. We touched on Low Forest's fascinating collection of releases on Bandcamp, where to follow them (Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, and we had a peek at a few of Josh's favorite albums, which were these:Hum's You'd Prefer an Astronaut (1995)Fantastic Planet (1996), FailurePortishead's Roseland NYC Live (1998)Small Explosions That Are Yours to Keep (2005), Mitchell AkiyamaElder's Reflections of a Floating World (2017)The fact that Josh has a super-sharp mind, a warm-and-open heart, and might very well be a vessel for delivering space rock to Kansas City may or may not be related to the fact that he is a pretty soft-spoken fellow. One would think that I'd be able to recognize that early enough in the conversation to adjust the levels at this point, but...it's not easy being the 2024 version of Al Franken's Mobile One-Man Uplink Unit. So, apologies if he's tough to hear at times. It was a true pleasure meeting Josh, and knowing that his presence is out there adds to my occasionally stout belief that there's good in the world moving things in the right direction. Thanks for tuning in.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are cuts from a tune called, "Witchoo," by Durand Jones & The Indications. I lifted it from their 2021 release, Private Space, which exists for us c/o Dead Oceans.

Today Trev welcomes new presenter Betty Melon to the Freedom of Species team. Betty shares her reluctant journey to veganism and her history of animal advocacy. We introduce the meaning of the Anthropocene, a geologic time period defined by human activity and we discuss the implications of national borders and militarisation on wildlife and nature. We finish with a discussion of American imperialism and the role of McDonald's in global geopolitics. Fact correction: as of 2024 there are 195 countries on earth and 118 of them have McDonald's. This episode first ran on August 28, 2022.For music critic Stephen Deusner, songwriters fall into one of two camps. There are the ones who have something they want to tell you, and then there are the ones who want to figure something out. For him, the longevity of the Drive-By Truckers comes from their residence in the second camp. For decades now, they've been writing smart, complex songs whose characters add complexity to our picture of rural America, especially the South. Stephen's book about the Truckers, Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers, was published in the fall of 2021, and is now on its second printing. On today's episode of Inner States, we talk about the South, Southern Rock, rockets, the masculinity of Jimmy Carter, and, of course, the Truckers.Music ReviewAfter our conversation with Stephen Deusner, Adriane Pontecorvo reviews Private Space, the latest album from Durand Jones and the Indications. The band started almost by accident in Bloomington, Indiana. The second track on Private Space, “Witchoo,” ended up on Barack Obama's best-of list for 2021.MusicOur theme song is by Amy Oelsner and Justin Vollmar. We have additional music from the artists at Universal Production Music.
Fresh from the seat at the end of the bar, we'd like to welcome Alex (Beer & Vinyl) joining the airwaves of Vinyl Community Podcasts fresh off his recent sit down with the owner of of Plaid Room Records and Coleman Records of Loveland, Ohio - Terry Cole. Colemine is a label home to some of the best indie + soul music out today, featuring artists like Durand Jones, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio (DLO3), The Jive Turkeys, and Kendra Morris (to name a few), and home to others on sub-labels Karma Chief Records, Remined Records, etc. The conversation touches many points in the history of both the Colemine label and the Plaid Room Records shop itself. Arguably one of the best shops (and labels) in the country, it's a great walk from the origins to present day, and you'll find it (and future conversations) from Alex here on Vinyl Community Podcasts going forward! Durand Jones has a lot to say, and we really get into it in this amazing and refreshing conversation. Effusive, warm and fun-loving with a terrific sense of humor, Durand is here to honor his Louisiana roots and his hometown of Hillaryville, on the Mississippi just north of New Orleans. Having recently released his debut solo album, Wait Til I Get Over, Durand and I talk about going out without his band, The Indications, and I learn what exactly are the key elements of his upbringing that makes this latest record so compelling. Durand takes pride in his vulnerability and is thus able to share personal details he chose not disclose until this moment in his creative life. I was honored to chat with this genuine and truly dynamic artist from the Southern tradition of R&B and Soul. This is a special conversation and I'm excited to share itl! Today we look behind the curtain and discuss how much we hate martinis and if we are actually koalas. Matthew tries to stay cool as we talk to Durand Jones about his Gumbo recipe and new solo album. Stir every 15 to 20 mins. My desired color is a medium-dark caramel). Once done, set aside.32oz of Okra cut-- not too thin and still round(spread okra on a baking pan, spread an even amount of olive oil on the okra, place in the oven. Bake at 375 until slime is fully cooked out. This usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour 25. Try to check every fifteen minutes and stir to avoid the okra getting burned). Once done set aside2 lbs of chicken thighs, boneless and skinless. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and some cajun seasoning like tony's chacherie.(Once chicken is seasoned, place in a baking pan and let it bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes at 375 degrees). Once done set aside Gumbo time:1 large white onion-- chopped4-6 stalks of celery--chopped1 large red bell pepper-- chopped1 large green bell pepper-- chopped(optional)Smoked Turkey meat with bone still in-- you're looking for a smoked turkey leg, or smoked turkey necks. This will add immense flavor to your broth/roux.12 ounces of Andouille Sausage-- or closest like sausage2 lbs of shrimp-- peeled and deveined-- set aside in a container-- keep them cooled or iced.96 ounces of your favorite stock-- you can make your own, but really no need. A good stock from the grocery store can work, and save you time from this already lengthy preparation Get a large and deep pot, place a little oil in it and bring it to medium-hot heat.Once the pot is temp ready-- place onion, celery, and bell peppers in the large and deep pot. Do not add garlic just yet. Monitor the pot and make sure you are not burning the vegetablesLet this cook down for about 12-15 minutes. Keep occasionally stirring until onions began to carmelize. Add garlic now. Keep an eye and occasionally stir for about 7-10 minutes.Take a cup of your stock and add it to your baked flower in a bowl. Whisk until smooth and without lumps.Add this mixture into your large pot with veggies.Stir and mix with the veggies and let this cook for about 5 minutes or so.Add your smoked turkey leg or turkey necks into the pot.Add stock until the pot is around 60 percent full-- we don't want to overfill the pot-- because we have a lot more to add into the gumbo.Stir the pot, get the mixture of the roux to gel smoothly with the water. Get this to a medium boil.Add Okra to the potNow is a great time to season your gumbo with tony's, garlic powder, pepper, hot sauce, garlic powder, to your preference. Do not add salt yet.Let this cook-- pot covered preferred, for about 45 minutes to an hour, occasionally stirring and checking in on the pot. Adding in more stock if needed. Keeping your pot a little more than half full.Bring Pot to a medium to low heatAdd sliced, round andouille sausage to the potChop baked chicken into medium to medium large sized chunks, once done-- add to the potAdd more stock if needed.Let this cook for about 30 minutes.Add your shrimp last. They will not take a very long time to cook in the gumbo. Ten to 15 minutes should be greatOptional, but once shrimp are done, turn off heat, and let the gumbo rest for 10 minutes. Add 16 ounces of ice cold water to the pot. Stir it in and let it sit for another 5 to 10 minutes. Salt to taste.Serve with steamed riceAt least 5 to 7 cloves of garlic-- chopped1 cup of stock of your choice
