If you're looking for a heartwarming and inspiring conversation, you've come to the right place! In this episode of Reading with Your Kids, we had the pleasure of chatting with Frankie Thompkins, the new executive director of Clowns Without Borders USA, as well as authors Azizi Tuere and Kao Kalia Yang. Frankie shared the incredible mission of Clowns Without Borders - providing relief through the power of laughter in areas of crisis, both internationally and right here in the US. As she explained, clowning has this unique ability to transcend language barriers and bring joy to people experiencing trauma and hardship. It's such a beautiful and impactful way to make a difference. Azizi Tuere spoke about her "Because I Am" book series, which aims to redefine concepts like beauty, genius, and resilience for children in a positive, empowering way. She shared how her own multicultural upbringing and passion for community have inspired her writing. The third guest, Kao Kalia Yang, revealed that it was her father, a Hmong "song poet," who modeled the practice of "collecting the beautiful" - the beautiful things people say to each other. This has been a guiding principle in Kao's own life and work as a writer. Whether it's Clowns Without Borders bringing smiles to those who need it most, Azizi's empowering stories, or Kao's celebration of Hmong culture, this episode is a reminder of the power of connection, compassion, and finding joy in the world around us. So get ready to be uplifted, inspired, and maybe even a little teary-eyed (in the best way!). This is one conversation you won't want to miss. The weight of constant struggles can feel suffocating. So many of us are constantly up against systems designed to keep us down. But what if the challenges you face could become the very reason you create change—both for yourself and others? Desange Kuenihira is proof that even the toughest circumstances can ignite a movement. Her journey from a young girl in Uganda who was once labeled "meaningless" to the founder of Undefeated shows the power of resilience. Now, through Undefeated, she is helping single mothers and young people transform their futures by providing them with tools to break free from poverty and build sustainable livelihoods. In this episode, Desange shares: The pivotal moment that led her to challenge societal expectations. How Undefeated goes beyond business training to shift mindsets. Why her innovative partnerships are expanding the definition of "giving back." Desange's story isn't just one of survival—it's about creating possibilities where none existed. Tune in to hear how her mission is shaping the next generation of changemakers, and how you can be part of this movement. As the late Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano put it in his book Upside Down: A Primer for a Looking Glass World, the terminology used in mainstream political discourse often describes precisely the opposite of reality. Cut-throat capitalism is free trade. Violence is law and order. Extraction of natural wealth from communities is increasing revenue. So where does “border security” fit in to this? Part of the answer is that borders do not produce security but subordination. This point has been made for two decades now by sociologist Nandita Sharma (see the essay “Why No Borders?,” which she cowrote with Bridget Anderson and Cynthia Wright). The point of borders is not to keep people out but to keep them in line. Borders are foundational to a global system fraught with injustice. The struggle for no borders, Sharma explains, is a practical political project. Sharma is the author of two books, Home Economics: Nationalism and the Making of “Migrant Workers” in Canada (University of Toronto Press, 2006) and Home Rule: National Sovereignty and the Separation of Natives and Migrants (Duke University Press, 2020). She teaches at the University of Hawai‘i. During our conversation, I wondered aloud whether “no borders” is still a practical political project, now that Donald Trump will take office for a second term. She responded without hesitation, “It's not only a viable step, it's the only step.” As we concluded, we discussed the provocative quote from Italian thinker, philosopher, and Marxist Antonio Gramsci: “The old world is dying. The new world is struggling to be born. Now is the time of monsters.” Those monsters are easy to identify with the incoming Trump administration and the nation-state it represents, along with increasing climate catastrophe. “This is the moment of solidarity,” Sharma said. “This is the moment for mutual support.” Indeed, she hinted, the moment has arrived to not only imagine but also to work for another possible world. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/border-chronicle/support

The approach to supporting Ukraine which Western leaders have been taking so far has been „as long as it takes“. The lack of a clearly defined end goal impacted the pace and scale of the assistance, as well as raised questions on its efficiency. It cannot last this way in the protracted war as Ukraine's mobilisation potential and resources are shorter than Russia's. Instead, a clear commitment of the West to aid Ukraine with „whatever it takes for a fast victory“ is the only way to return sustainable peace back to Europe. ---------- ABOUT: Olena Halushka is a is a board member of the Ukrainian NGO “Anti-corruption Action Centre”, and co-founder of the International Centre for Ukrainian Victory. The United Nations recently said the most dangerous border in the world in the U.S. - Mexico border. Hundreds of thousands of people are crossing the border illegally and disappearing into America. Why does it matter? The nation of Hungary faced a unique challenge when their Serbian neighbors began to serve as the entry point for a huge influx of migrants. Unlike the U.S. however, Hungary cracked down and set strict rules for entry into their country. The Director General of Hungary's Center for Fundamental Rights, Miklos Szantho, joins Tim in this episode and shares why it is important for every country to determine who enters.

Guest host Toby Leary welcomes to the show the former ambassador to Iceland, Jeffrey Ross Gunter. Borders are usually defined as geographical boundaries, imposed either by features such as oceans and terrain, or by political entities such as governments, sovereign states, federated states, and other subnational entities. Political borders can be established through warfare, colonization, or mutual agreements between the political entities that reside in those areas; the creation of these agreements is called boundary delimitation. Some borders—such as most states' internal administrative borders, or inter-state borders within the Schengen Area—are open and completely unguarded.[3] Most external political borders are partially or fully controlled, and may be crossed legally only at designated border checkpoints; adjacent border zones may also be controlled.
Russia has no borders. This was the expansive and imperialistic idea behind the Russian World philosophy. But Ukraine has turned the tables on this idea and shown that Russia's vast border regions are undefended, and in some ways undefendable. From the ‘little blue men' appearing in Belgorod, to the drone strikes deep in Russian territory, the theatrical explosion about the Kremlin roof, and the mysterious fires happening at strategic facilities all over Russia, it seems that Putin's war to secure Russia's borders has actually had the effect of stripping Russia of any safety and security. Konstantin Samoilov is a well-known YouTuber whose channel ‘Inside Russia' comments insightfully on Russia's decent into authoritarianism over the last few years. But now, like many others, he's outside Russia, with no idea of when he can return there.

The world has a lot of borders, but very few people understand what it means for the ordinary citizen and how it affects their lives. The problem this century is that these borders are not decided by people, in order to best serve them. Instead, there is a multi-tiered system that gives some humans some rights and many corporations a free-for all. Dr. Ajaikumar is one of the few doctorprenuers who have steered clear of government grants all along. His motto is simple but not simplistic. He ensures transparent and ethical operations, with an unflinching focus on doing the right thing for the patient, every single time. At HCG, no patient is denied treatment on economic grounds. Dr. Ajaikumar fervently believes that the cost of healthcare service in India is a fraction of that same service offered in the United States and Singapore – quite a boon for a country where medical insurance isn't commonplace, and out-of-pocket expenditure is all-pervading. Dr. Ajaikumar has a unique way of blending his philanthropic principles with business priorities. He ensures the capacity utilization of the available equipment essentially through late-night and after-hour treatments and procedures, making the most of technology and finances towards preserving the unique patient-centric character of his organization. All the reserves and surpluses are plowed back into the system to bring in more technology and to upskill doctors. No wonder, Harvard has taken note of his unique business model through an elaborate case study and Forbes has done a special feature on his sterling achievements in cancer care. The biggest validation of Dr. Ajaikumar's vision, mission and values came during the pandemic times when HCG saw a substantial fund infusion from a marquee long-term investor to help deleverage its balance sheet, fund its aggressive expansion plans, as also achieve prudent consolidation of various businesses. In this time where many are looking for great stories to inspire them, give hope, and outline a path of entrepreneurship that leads to great success, your audience should look no further than this tell-all story! One doctor, with a monumental goal to treat cancer at an affordable cost In India, started with a vision. This vision was gripped onto by investors, and even the US Government, which offered grants through a non-profit trust. Dr. Ajaikumar was able to build several different cancer centers across India before building and realizing his vision, HCG, in 2005. HCG became a recognized leader in cancer treatment, and just last year opened its 15th center dedicated to value-based medicine, specializing in affordable cancer treatment in both India and the United States.
