Send us a textAnother slice of Tom Cruise Sci-Fi goodness comes under the scrutiny of our all seeing eyes this week, as we review Steven Spielberg's 2005 H.G Wells baiting War of the Worlds movie.Steff flexes his authority here as he's read the book, heard the album, lived the live experience and got the t-shirt to prove it.Although as you'd expect, Hutch has much to contribute to the discussion too. Highlights include a fascinating insight into the Squirrel Wars of 1876, and a "hilarious" story about people walking into the wrong cinema screen...It's our festive episode next week, so be sure to tune in as we review a brand new Christmas movie. You can contact us at:podcast@2ndchancecinemaclub.comWe can be found on:Instagram - @2ndchancecinemaclub

After a ship called "The Lady Vain" got caught in dire straits, he and 2 crew members escaped on a dingy with very little rations left to them. For 8 days that travelled aimlessly, slowly making their way through the soggy biscuits and water flask that they had. After a few days, one of the men suggests that they draw lots to see who will sacrifice themselves to save the others. One of these two other men draws the short straw and instead of sacrificing himself, decides to attack the other man on the dingy. The scuffle between these two leads to them both falling overboard. Exhausted, and famished from their voyage they do not surface, leaving Edward, alone in the middle of the sea with no hope of rescue in sight. On the 8th day, when he believes himself to be on death's door, a schooner pokes its sail over the horizon and rescues him.SUPPORT THE SHOWGet SurfShark and protect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389 Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers to stop selling your information:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389 *SOCIAL*INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreads TWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/ Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Men Like Gods by H. G. Wells audiobook. In the summer of 1921, a disenchanted journalist escapes the rat race for a drive in the country. But Mr. Barnstaple's trip exceeds his expectations when he and other motorists are swept 3,000 years into the future. The inadvertent time travelers arrive in a world that corresponds exactly to Barnstaple's ideals; a utopian state, free of crime, poverty, war, disease, and bigotry. Unfettered by the constraints of government and organized religion, the citizens lead rich, meaningful lives, passed in pursuit of their creative fancies. Barnstaple's traveling companions, however, quickly contrive a scheme to remake the utopia in the image of their twentieth-century world. Learn more about your ad choices. If you've ever done surgery on a dog to make it more like a guy, only to set it loose in the wilderness and gradually watch it shift back into being a dog, maybe you'll have some sympathy for Doctor Moreau. Otherwise it's pretty hard to get fully onboard with his whole badly-make-animals-into-people gambit. Welcome back to The Literary Life Podcast and a brand new episode for this fall season! This week Angelina, Cindy, and Thomas begin this series of episodes on science fiction stories, beginning with some background on H. G. Wells and his book The First Men in the Moon. This sets the scene for us as we then continue on next week with the opening of a discussion of C. S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet. Thomas gives some biographical background information about Wells, and Angelina shares some distinctives of the science fiction genre and its sub-categories. Cindy highlights how much Out of the Silent Planet truly is a derivative of The First Men In the Moon with Lewis putting forward a very different premise. Herbert George Wells lived from 1866 to 1946, and saw the world change on a scale like never before. A forward-thinking social critic, he wrote a number of utopian works and foresaw the advent of aircraft, space travel, nuclear weapons, and the world wide web. He was known for placing commonplace detail alongside a single extraordinary assumption in each work. This method was dubbed “Wells' Law”. His most notable works include The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and The War of the Worlds. Today's story contains the commonplace details surrounding a hunt for buried treasure. What do you see as the single extraordinary assumption? And now, The Treasure in the Forest, by H.G. Wells.
