“It's important that my perspective stays flexible because my perspective could need updating, it could need to be changed based on new information.” — Nic StoneNic Stone isn't interested in staying in her lane. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, her young adult novels—Dear Martin, Chaos Theory, and Clean Getaway—explore nuances of racism, power, and mental illness with clarity and compassion. Now, she's stepping into uncharted territory with Boom Town, her first adult novel. Set in a legendary Atlanta strip club, it's a story about women, survival, and social power, and is a reflection of Nic's own creative evolution. In this Second Chapter conversation, Expanding Woman: Nic Stone on Forgiveness and the Freedom to Change, Nic returns to the podcast and gets real about what it means to grow louder, freer, and to become more yourself. She talks about lighting rage letters on fire, a recent existential crisis (hello, middle age), and the surprising way her new book helped her dad heal old wounds. Settle in for a conversation that'll make you want to live a little louder and embrace every chaotic (and beautiful) version of who you are. http://thereadingculturepod.com/nic-stone-second-chapter***Show ChaptersChapter 1: Unpaved TerritoryChapter 2: Right on Schedule Chapter 3: The Picture of Dorian GrayChapter 4: Learning the StepsChapter 5: Let It BurnLinksThe Reading CultureThe Reading Culture Newsletter SignupFollow The Reading Culture on Instagram (for giveaways and bonus content)Nic Stone Nic Stone Instagram Boom TownThe Picture of Dorian Gray Beanstack resources to build your community's reading cultureJordan Lloyd BookeyHost and Production CreditsHost: Jordan Lloyd BookeyProducers: Mel Webb and Lower Street MediaScript Editors: Josia Lamberto-Egan, Mel Webb, Jordan Lloyd Bookey

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0K Dive into the shadows of espionage with Analytic Dreamz on Notorious Mass Effect as he delivers his unfiltered reaction to the electrifying official trailer for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, the upcoming Netflix animated spy thriller. Created by John Wick mastermind Derek Kolstad, this adult-oriented series brings back legendary operative Sam Fisher—voiced by Liev Schreiber—as a grizzled Fourth Echelon commander pulled from retirement. Set decades after the iconic games, the story follows Fisher mentoring a battle-scarred recruit, Zinnia McKenna, to dismantle a sprawling global conspiracy led by the sinister Displace organization and the vengeful offspring of his old foe, Douglas Shetland.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the trailer's pulse-pounding action sequences, slick animation from Sun Creature and Fost studios, and nods to Splinter Cell lore like Chaos Theory flashbacks. He explores how the series amps up the stealth, betrayal, and high-stakes intrigue that defined the franchise, questioning if this adaptation captures the essence of Sam Fisher's tactical genius or veers too far into John Wick-style chaos. From the night-vision goggles to the visceral combat, Analytic Dreamz analyzes the visual flair, voice performances, and potential plot twists that promise a thrilling ride when it drops on Netflix October 14, 2025.Whether you're a die-hard Splinter Cell fan reliving Sam's glory days or new to the Tom Clancy universe craving conspiracy-fueled animation, this segment unpacks why Deathwatch could redefine video game adaptations. Analytic Dreamz shares his take on the trailer's suspenseful buildup, emotional depth in Fisher's arc, and what it means for future seasons. Tune in for expert insights on gaming crossovers, Netflix's bold animation push, and the evolution of spy thrillers in 2025. Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingMatt Fanslow dives into an unexpected but fascinating comparison between Jurassic Park and the auto repair industry, exploring themes of chaos theory, unintended consequences, and the importance of foundational knowledge. Drawing parallels from the iconic film (and Michael Crichton's novels), Matt discusses how small decisions—like cutting corners or skipping fundamentals—can lead to big, unpredictable outcomes in business, careers, and life.Key Topics Discussed:"Your Scientists Were So Preoccupied With Whether They Could, They Didn't Stop to Think If They Should"How the pursuit of innovation without foresight mirrors challenges in the automotive industry. The dangers of prioritizing profit or speed over sustainability and safety.Chaos Theory & The Butterfly EffectSmall, seemingly insignificant actions can have massive consequences (e.g., a poorly coded security system in Jurassic Park → dinosaur chaos).Applying this to business: How initial conditions (hiring, training, ethics) shape long-term success or failure. The Perils of Skipping FundamentalsIan Malcolm's critique in Jurassic Park: "You stood on the shoulders of giants but never learned the underlying theory."Why technicians can't jump straight to advanced diagnostics (e.g., lab scopes) without mastering electrical fundamentals."Fundamental ≠ easy. It's the foundation everything else relies on."Unintended Consequences in Auto RepairNedry's sabotage: How underpaying for critical services (e.g., software, training) backfires.Diet analogy: One unhealthy choice can undermine progress—just like one overlooked repair detail can lead to comebacks.Awareness & the "Little Things"The importance of paying attention to details in workflows, customer service, and team dynamics. Why hindsight often reveals blind spots—and how to cultivate proactive awareness.Notable Quotes:"Chaos theory isn't about randomness—it's about how tiny, early decisions create unpredictable outcomes.""You can't win the lottery without buying a ticket, but you also can't master diagnostics without understanding electricity.""Respect the journey. Mastery isn't just about skill; it's about humility and earned wisdom."Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingNAPA Autotech's team of ASE Master Certified Instructors are conducting over 1,200 classes covering 28 automotive topics. Climate scientist Jagadish Shukla grew up in a small village in rural India, where people starved if the monsoon season didn't bring rain. To help his village, he set out to become a scientist and discover a way to predict the seasons—an unthinkable idea at the time, in the 1960s and ‘70s. Shukla became a pioneer in modern weather forecasting, and he tells his unlikely story in his new memoir, A Billion Butterflies: A Life in Climate and Chaos Theory. He talks with Host Flora Lichtman about his journey to becoming a leading climate scientist, the state of weather forecasting today, and why forecasting is more important than ever in the face of climate change.Guest:Dr. Jagadish Shukla, author of A Billion Butterflies: A Life in Climate and Chaos Theory and climate scientist at George Mason UniversityTranscripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
