May is often the month when IEW instructors are reaching Unit 9 in which students write formal critiques and Response to Literature compositions. Many of IEW’s courses include literature suggestions because we recognize the importance of connecting literature and writing. In this podcast, Andrew Pudewa and Julie Walker discuss the impact literature has on thinking and the connections between memory, imagination, and words. I mean, I don't know you. Maybe you didn't grow up in an evangelical Christian subculture. But if you did, there's a high likelihood that the ideas you absorbed about how men and women behave—and what it even means to be masculine or feminine—were influenced heavily by C.S Lewis' famous Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. On this fascinating episode, Kathryn Wagner (returning guest and medieval lit scholar) and Robin Harris (writer and incoming seminarian) stopped by to evaluate Lewis' takes on gender against both more modern feminist sensibilities and much older writers and theologians in the Christian tradition. You should absolutely join us.★ About Our Guests:Robin Harris is a North Carolina based freelance writer and editor who specializes in Bible curriculum. Joel spoke with repeat guest Nijay Gupta and first-time guest Melissa Barciela Mandala about Paul's notion of "love." They discuss the impulse to find a "theological center" to Paul's New Testament writings, the success of Nijay's attempt to locate the love of God as this "center," and of course, what we are all currently reading and enjoying.Nijay K. Gupta is Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He is co-editor of the Dictionary of Paul and His Letters (2nd ed.), The State of New Testament Studies, The State of Pauline Studies, and serves as a senior translator for the New Living Translation. Barciela Mandala is Assistant Professor of New Testament at Palm Beach Atlantic University and works primarily in Pauline studies. A revised version of her doctoral dissertation entitled The Suffering Body as a Site of Virtue Formation in Philippians is forthcoming with Mohr Siebeck. Her research focused on the apostle Paul's view of the body and suffering within his ancient philosophical context. The subjects of current and past work include various approaches to Paul's Letter to the Romans, virtue ethics in relation to Paul, and explorations of comparative methodology in biblical studies more broadly. Books Mentioned in this Episode:If you'd like to order any of the following books, we encourage you to do so from Hearts and Minds Books(An independent bookstore in Dallastown, PA, run by Byron and Beth Borger) The Affections of Christ Jesus: Love at the Heart of Paul's Theology by Nijay GuptaThe Suffering Body as a Site of Virtue Formation in Philippians by Melissa Barciela Mandala (forthcoming)1 Corinthians: A Theological, Pastoral and Missional Commentary by Michael GormanColossians and Philemon (Word and Spirit Commentary on the New Testament) by Holly BeersThe Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van Der KolkRemembering Paul: Ancient and Modern Contests over the Image of the Apostle by Benjamin WhiteThe Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing: A Theological Commentary by Jonathan PenningtonLife on the Silent Planet: Essays on Christian Living from C.S. Writer/director Jeffrey St. Jules has always been captivated by the idea of otherworldly existence. As a child, his imagination ran wild with fantasies of belonging to an alien race and one day returning to his home planet. This dream carried a unique allure that sparked a lifetime fascination with solitude and escapism. In moments of stress and frustration, the notion of leaving the chaotic world behind for a life of solitude on another planet became his ultimate fantasy. That was part of the inspiration for his film, The Silent Planet. We explore more... Start your Free One Year Trial at Sci-Fi Talk Plus

Welcome to Following Films, the podcast where we explore the art and craft of filmmaking through conversations with the people who bring movies to life. I'm your host, Chris Maynard, and today, we're diving into the haunting and atmospheric world of The Silent Planet (2024), a sci-fi thriller that blends psychological tension with existential dread.Directed by Jeffrey St. Jules, The Silent Planet follows two inmates sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor on a remote world. As isolation takes its toll, their grip on reality begins to slip, forcing them to confront the past they've tried to forget. It's a film that raises deep questions about memory, identity, and what it means to be truly alone. In this episode, I sit down with Jeffrey St. Jules to discuss the inspiration behind the film, its unique approach to storytelling, and how they crafted such an immersive, otherworldly experience.

Filmmaker Atom Egoyan ("Exotica", "The Sweet Hereafter") returns after 9 years for his third appearance on the podcast. He has a new movie that is currently in theaters called "Seven Veils" starring Academy Award® nominee Amanda Seyfried ("Mean Girls", "Mama Mia"). The film follows theater director Jeanine (Seyfried) who, after years away, re-enters the opera world to stage her former mentor's most famous work. Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine allows her repressed trauma to color the present as her personal and professional lives begin to unravel. Renowned director Atom Egoyan sees "Seven Veils" as operating within a trilogy alongside his other critically acclaimed works "Exotica" and "The Sweet Hereafter". In "Seven Veils", he also reunites with Seyfried, who he worked with on the 2009 film "Chloe", in this visually stunning, propulsive work, filmed on location during the staging of his acclaimed production of "Salome". Egoyan directed the opera "Salome" in 1996, the first opera in what would be many to come over his career. Best known as a prominent film director since the 1980s, Egoyan has proven he is a master of both mediums, and "Seven Veils" is his way of bringing both together. Also on this episode the Canadian filmmaker Jeffrey St. Jules ("Bang Bang Baby") discusses his new film "The Silent Planet". The film stars the great actor Elias Koteas ("Exotica", "Crash") who joins us in this conversation. Serving a life sentence alone on a distant planet, an aging convict must confront his past when a new prisoner arrives and forces him to remember his life on Earth.

Interview by Angela CroudaceIt's not every day you get to chat with a band while they're deep in the chaos of tour preparations, but that's exactly what happened during my interview with ERRA's JT and Jesse Cash. The scene? Jesse roaming the aisles of a Walmart sorting out some last-minute tour merch. As Jesse explained, “Our merch guy is burning the midnight oil, and I had to run and get some things before it was too late.” Nothing says rock star quite like managing tour logistics while dodging shopping carts.Despite the unconventional setting, the conversation quickly shifted to their latest album, CURE. ERRA's sixth studio album marks a significant creative evolution, and both JT and Jesse discussed how the band's approach has changed over time. While their past albums often focused on technical precision and complex structures, CURE introduced a more groove-based, accessible sound. JT shared, “Every time we sat down to write, we just kept getting these groovier ideas, and we just kind of stuck with it.” It wasn't a deliberate shift, but rather a reflection of where the band's creativity took them during the writing process.Jesse, who had been diving into a mix of nihilistic media at the time, was inspired by the 1997 film Cure by Kyoshi Kurosawa. The bleakness of the film mirrored the darker, introspective themes in the album's lyrics, like “Crawl Backwards Out of Heaven.” However, Jesse admitted that his bandmate Joseph was less than enthused by the deep, art-house inspiration. “Joseph doesn't always have time for my 'art house bullshit,'" he laughed, citing his bandmate's love for Fast & Furious as a source of inspiration for more straightforward ideas.Despite the shifts in their sound, the band stays true to its roots of pushing creative boundaries. When asked how they avoid formulaic songwriting, Jesse humorously responded, “I just tell JT we can't write a song that sounds like Veil of Maya,” acknowledging how self-awareness helps them remain true to their evolving style.ERRA's tour is also a family affair, with Silent Planet and Resolve joining them on the road. Jesse eagerly anticipated the tour antics, particularly the "fortress of piss bottles" famously built by Silent Planet's Garrett Russell. While the rest of us might cringe at the thought, for ERRA, it's just another weird tour memory to laugh about (Yeah Jesse, we hope Garrett never watches this interview either!).In the end, whether it's touring with friends or evolving creatively, ERRA continues to prove that they're not afraid to push the limits of metal music. As they wrap up their interview, Jesse's final words offer a fitting end: “We go way back with them,” speaking not just of Silent Planet, but of the enduring relationships and creative passion that continue to drive ERRA forward.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In the late 1980s, when hair metal was all the rage and grunge was just a whisper, King's X dropped "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska." Despite not hitting the mainstream heights of some of their peers, they seriously shook up our latest listener poll with this album. Today's episode of Dig Me Out dives into King's X's unique groove, which carved out a niche that straddled the worlds of their metal and alternative contemporaries.Dig Me Out is listener-powered. Suggest an album →We explore how King's X meshed with—and stood out from—the bands they toured with. Imagine sharing the stage with the heavy hitters like Anthrax, AC/DC, and even alt-rockers like Living Colour. King's X managed to hold their own with a sound that mixed deep, soulful harmonies and heavy, intricate riffs. This made them a band that other musicians admired, even if they flew under the radar for the larger public.“Gretchen Goes to Nebraska," showcased King's X's knack for blending Rush-like complexity with the emotional rawness that would soon define grunge. Bands like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains owe a bit of their sound to the trails blazed by King's X, and we're here to tell you exactly how and why.Recorded with producer Sam Taylor in Houston and released on Megaforce Records, this album is a testament to King's X's technical chops and thoughtful lyrics. We'll break down tracks like "Over My Head" and "Summerland," discussing how they mix thoughtful musings with rock-solid beats, setting King's X apart from both the glam scene and the emerging grunge movement. We'll also ponder why King's X, despite their massive influence and critical nods, never quite became household names. Touring with an eclectic mix, from the theatrical Blue Öyster Cult to metal gods Iron Maiden, showed their range but perhaps left fans puzzled about where exactly to place them in the rock spectrum. So crank it up and join us on "Dig Me Out 80s Metal" as we dive into the fascinating world of King's X, exploring how they've left an indelible mark on the music scene, beloved by those in the know and just waiting to be rediscovered by new ears.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Out of the Silent Planet* 14:01 - We Were Born to Be Loved - CBS Orchestra* 28:47 - Over My Head* 32:36 - You're The Only One - Sneak Preview* 35:14 - Summerland* 37:13 - The Difference (In the Garden of St. Anne's On-the-Hill)* 38:23 - I'll Never Be The Same* 40:00 - Send a Message* 40:17 - Black Flag from King's X (1992)* 43:42 - Out of the Silent Planet* 48:30 - Over My Head* 52:26 - I'll Never Be the Same* 58:06 - This Picture - Jerry Gaskill* 1:02:00 - Take Me Away - Supershine* Outro - PleiadesYour Metal PicksAs we jam through the vast world of 80s metal, it's your insights and picks that fuel our episodes. We had the pleasure of interviewing Silent Planet over Zoom video!Every once in a while, wildflowers will sprout en masse in the middle of the California desert. Known as a “SUPERBLOOM,”this phenomenon paints lush colors across a traditionally arid and barren landscape. The emergence and evolution of Silent Planet mirrors this phenomenon. Since 2009, the California quartet—Garrett Russell [vocals, guitar], Mitchell Stark [guitar], Alex Camerena [drums], and Nick Pocock [bass]—have set themselves apart in the realm of heavy music. Amplifying hypnotic hooks across alternately raw and rich soundscapes steeped in hardcore, post-rock, metal, and ambient textures, the award-winning group has generated tens of millions of streams and earned tastemaker praise. Now, the musicians tell a story as massive as their sound on their aptly titled fifth full-length offering, SUPERBLOOM [Solid State Records].Silent Planet has consistently transfixed a diehard fanbase. The group dropped a string of acclaimed albums, including The Night God Slept [2014], Everything Was Sound [2016], When The End Began [2018], and Iridescent [2021]—which Hysteria hailed as “a vulnerable and emotional LP.” Not to mention, album standout “Trilogy” generated 5.3 million Spotify streams to sit alongside their genre-bending triumph “Panic Room” from the 2016 release, currently at 5 million. The guys notably took home “Best Underground Band” at the 2017 Alternative Press Music Awards and toured with the likes of Motionless In White, August Burns Red, Beartooth, and The Contortionist.Over the course of two years, they recorded what would become SUPERBLOOM in Woodland Hills, CA alongside longtime producer and frequent collaborator Daniel Braunstein. A jarring turn of events split the process into two seasons. Trekking through a Wyoming snowstorm in November 2022, Silent Planet survived a vehicle accident. The van flipped over, leaving the group laying in the wreckage of a bitter Wyoming snowstorm as Garrett was hospitalized with a fractured back and head wound requiring stitches.Along the way, they settled on a conceptual framework, expanding the scope of their vision like never before.Silent Planet initially teased the record with “:Signal:” followed by “Antimatter.” On the latter, spacey electronic transmissions buzz. Pivoting on a dime, it dissolves into a stomping industrial groove offset by synth swells.“It's the conclusion of the story we're telling,” he says. “This is the finale. There are different levels of a close encounter. It's a close encounter of the fifth kind. It's the destination of the music.”In the end, Silent Planet continues to elevate and uplift heavy music to another dimension. We want to hear from you! Welcome back to The Literary Life Podcast this week as we wrap up our series of discussion on C. S. Lewis' novel Out of the Silent Planet. Angelina Stanford, Cindy Rollins, and Thomas Banks are covering from chapter 16 to the end of the book in today's episode. After sharing their commonplace quotes, Angelina starts the conversation comparing the ideas in Gulliver's Travels with what Lewis is doing in this book. Thomas quotes a passage from the Aeneid in Latin as they talk about the parallels to Out of the Silent Planet. The structure of the medieval romance is seen fully as we finish the story, as noted by Angelina. She and Thomas also point out more connections with Paradise Lost. Cindy brings everything together with some thoughts on the unraveling of modernity. Join us next week as we kick off a new series on The Mind of the Maker by Dorothy L. Sayers! Commonplace Quotes: But unlike most artists, Ruskin valued the seeing more than the doing. “The sight is more important than the drawing,” he said. “The greatest thing a human being ever does in this world is to SEE something, and tell what he saw in a plain way. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands of people can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy and religion—all in one.” from The World Enough and Time, by Christian McEwan Build, build your Babels black against the sky- But mark yon small green blade, your stones between, The single spy Of that uncounted host you have outcast; For with their tiny pennons waving green They shall storm your streets at last. F. L. Lucas, from “Beleaguered Cities” The old universe was wholly different in its effect. It was an answer, not a question. It offered not a field for musing but a single overwhelming object; an object which at once abashes and exalts the mind. For in it there is a final standard of size. The Primum Mobile is really large because it is the largest corporeal thing there is. We are really small because our whole Earth is a speck compared with the Primum Mobile. C. S. Lewis, from Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Literature Science-Fiction Cradlesong by C. S. Lewis By and by Man will try To get out into the sky, Sailing far beyond the air From Down and Here to Up and There. Stars and sky, sky and stars Make us feel the prison bars. Suppose it done. Now we ride Closed in steel, up there, outside Through our port-holes see the vast Heaven-scape go rushing past. Shall we? All that meets the eye Is sky and stars, stars and sky. Points of light with black between Hang like a painted scene Motionless, no nearer there Than on Earth, everywhere Equidistant from our ship. Heaven has given us the slip. Hush, be still. Outer space Is a concept, not a place. Try no more. Where we are Never can be sky or star. From prison, in a prison, we fly; There's no way into the sky. On The Literary Life podcast today, our hosts continue their discussion of C. S. Lewis' science fiction novel Out of the Silent Planet, covering chapters 6-15. Angelina Stanford, Cindy Rollins, and Thomas Banks begin by sharing their commonplace quotes, including some heated debate about sausages, then dive in to this section. They start by looking at Ransom's need to let go of some of his own modern preconceptions and categories, in spite of being steeped in the classics. Angelina, Thomas, and Cindy also discuss a variety of other themes, including: the contrasts between Lewis and Tolkien in world-building, Lewis' crafting a medieval tale in the genre of modern science fiction, and the problems with Ransom's anthro-centric perspective. House of Humane Letters is thrilled to announce an all new webinar from Dr. Jason Baxter coming October 31st! Register today for Can Dante's Inferno Save the World? Also coming up from House of Humane Letters on November 16, 2023, Jennifer Rogers' webinar on Tolkien and The Old English Tradition. You can sign up nowand save your spot! Commonplace Quotes: It is to me inconceivable that Nature as we see it is either what God intended or merely evil; it looks like a good thing spoiled. C. S. Lewis, from Letters of C. S. Lewis What do you usually do when you are shut up in a secret room, with no chance of getting out for hours? As for me, I always say poetry to myself. It is one of the uses of poetry–one says it to oneself in distressing circumstances of that kind, or when one has to wait at railway stations, or when one cannot get to sleep at night. You will find poetry most useful for this purpose. So learn plenty of it, and be sure it is the best kind, because this is most useful as well as most agreeable. Edith Nesbit, from The House of Arden Lewis began the trilogy as a conscious critique of what he called “Wellsianity,” a philosophy that applies Darwinism to the metaphysical sphere, believing that humans may evolve into a new species of gods, spreading from world to world and galaxy to galaxy. Though one finds this quasi-religious belief sometimes called “Evolutionism” in Olaf Stapledon, G. B. Shaw, and C. H. Waddington, Lewis found it most fully embodied in Wells' novels, and he set out to produce a Wellsian fantasy with an anti-Welsian theme. Lewis' Ransom books contrast so sharply from other stories of space voyages that Robert Scholes and Eric S. Rabkin credit him with inventing a new genre: “anti-science fiction.” from Reading the Classics with C. S. Lewis, edited by Thomas L. Martin A Selection from “I Saw Eternity the Other Night” by Henry Vaughn I saw Eternity the other night, Like a great ring of pure and endless light, All calm, as it was bright; And round beneath it, Time in hours, days, years, Driv'n by the spheres Like a vast shadow mov'd; in which the world And all her train were hurl'd. This week on The Literary Life podcast, Angelina, Cindy, and Thomas bring us the first installment in their series of discussions about C. S. Lewis' science fiction novel Out of the Silent Planet. Angelina shares some background on how Lewis began writing this book and what he set out to do through the genre of science fiction within the form of a romance. In looking at the historical time period in which he was writing, Thomas brings out the transcendent quality of Lewis' message. They talk about Ransom's character and his embodiment of the “old ways.” Cindy points out the Dante-esque details of the beginning of Ransom's journey. Other themes our hosts discuss are the problem of eugenics, the study of philology, the similarities in setup with First Men in the Moon, the enchantment of modernity, medieval cosmology, and so much more! Agnes Mure Mackenzie, The Kingdom of Scotland It is a strange comment on our age that such a book lies hid in a hideous paper-backed edition, wholly unnoticed by the cognescenti, while any “realistic” drivel about some neurotic in a London flat–something that needs no real invention at all, something that any educated man could write if he chose, may get seriously reviewed and mentioned in serious book–as if it really mattered. I wonder how long this tyranny will last? Twenty years ago I felt no doubt that I should live to see it all break up and great literature return: but here I am, losing teeth and hair, and still no break in the clouds. C. S. Lewis, from a letter to Joy Davidman, Dec. 1953 A Selection from New Heaven and New Earth by D. H. Lawrence I was greedy, I was mad for the unknown. I, new-risen, resurrected, starved from the tomb starved from a life of devouring always myself now here was I, new-awakened, with my hand stretched out and touching the unknown, the real unknown, the unknown unknown.
