But the fossil's disappearance upset some locals who have visited the site for generations and sparked an ownership debate. Local resident Tom Horncastle wants the fossil returned to its original spot.
Guy Ryan, founder and CEO of New Zealand charity Inspiring Stories joined Purposely Podcast to share his founder story Guy talked about the challenges faced by the young people they set out to help: ‘We help young people who have lived with or have overcome significant adversity. They face challenges in their communities including drugs, gangs and violence, sometimes multi- generational welfare dependency. There is also the impacts of colonization and unemployment.' We also talked about the aims of Inspiring Stories: ‘We set up inspiring stories with a big bold vision to see every young New Zealander unleash their potential to change the world.' As a young person, I started learning about some of the big social and environmental issues in our world. I found that really confronting. The huge inequality that exists in our world, the challenges around climate change. At the same time, I could see all this incredible creativity, passion potential of young people around me, and I just thought, you know, imagine, if every young New Zealander could unleash their potential to change the world, what would it take to make that happen? ‘To be able to feel like change is possible, more than ever…and having relatable examples of role models and people who are demonstrating incredible leadership and actually driving real change in lots of different circles and then pathways to support them' Guy Ryan grew up in Granity – a tiny town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. After finishing High School his passion for adventure and surfing took him to Otago University, where he completed a double degree in Commerce and Design, and then a Masters in Science Communication. It was at University he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship – from trying to build tech company, to creating an adventure festival, to co-founding a film production company and winning international awards for filmmaking. In 2010 he co-directed and produced a film called Carving the Future, a 25-minute documentary about four young New Zealanders taking action on climate change and environmental issues. Building on the lessons of previous ventures and the success of the film Carving the Future, Guy founded Inspiring Stories in 2011, initially winning a ‘World of Difference' scholarship from the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation. The next few years would become a whirlwind adventure of developing and testing programmes, partnerships, and building the organisation into the phenomenal force it is today. However it wasn't without it's challenges: ‘I come from a tiny little rural community, I don't come from any wealth and lacked significant credibility. As a young person with a big bold vision I was trying to knock on doors… it was honestly really challenging. People and organizations wouldn't take me seriously, they wouldn't give us the time of day… not even a chance to share what we were thinking. It took a long time to build street cred, you know, which inevitably can lead to a bit of resourcing and support to make things happen.' What they do today: Their Festival for the Future attracts 1,200+ people annually. Their Future Leaders programme is changing lives for a diverse range of young people in New Zealand's rural and provincial communities. Through The Impact Awards, they've awarded thiusands to support New Zealand's most driven and inspiring young social entrepreneurs. https://www.inspiringstories.org.nz/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Volunteers in a small West Coast town have been working hard to restore a heritage theatre. The Lyric Theatre stands in the heart of Granity, a small seaside mining town about a half hour north of Westport. The site of the theatre has a complex history, of buildings before it falling to fire or ruin over the years - before what now stands was built in 1956. In 2014 the theatre lost its roof in Cyclone Ita. Since then volunteers have been working hard to restore not only the roof, but to make sure the building meets the building standards. The theater has also been re-wired, had new toilets put in, and been painted inside and out.
Meet the authors of this easy to read, illustrated manual of the mind! Discover 7 easy tips to changing your experience of life from the inside out - for the better!LISA ESILELisa has a master’s degree in science. She regularly guest blogs on Tiny Buddha and has her own popular blog, LisaEsile.com where she writes and draws about how to feel contented even when crappy things happen. Lisa is the author of Reach Your Big Calm: 52 Powerful Messages to Quiet Your Mind and her e-book 7 Secrets Your Mind Doesn’t Want You to Know was downloaded over 12,000 times. As a young adult Lisa spent 5 years in bed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Later, she opened one of New Zealand’s first online bookstores, which she ran from Granity, a remote town on the West Coast of New Zealand. In 2009, scared that her CFS was returning, she spent a day doing nothing and being silent, as a way to change old habits and heal. What started as one day turned into three, then into a month, then eventually into what Lisa calls ‘her year of silence.Along with weekly conversations with friend and psychologist Don Morrison, Lisa emerged with a fresh understanding of the mind’s agenda. She realized that most of us spend our lives unwittingly trailing around after our mind, unable to access the deep reservoir of inner calm and self-assuredness that resides within. She could see that feeling peaceful and contented comes from knowing how to use the mind’s awesome power for what it’s good at, and knowing how to put it in its place when it starts to become a nuisance and run amok.Lisa grew up thinking that creativity was only for some people (not her) and can’t believe she now writes and draws for a living. She loves potatoes, mulch and packing delicious road snacks when going on a trip.FRANCO ESILEFranco spent his early years as a touring musician around the US and The Caribbean. In his late teens he moved into Boston and hired himself out as a bass player while taking writing courses at the Harvard Extension night school. He briefly attended the Berklee School of Music and studied privately under Charlie Benacos. He began to see the role his mind plays in his everyday life and to look there first for the source of any anxiety or stress. What he learned in this time period would later inform his contribution to “Whose Mind Is It Anyway?”Today, Franco works in film production a>http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0260611/> in Los Angeles. He collaborates with Lisa on her blog and other projects. Among his favorite places to be is in his recording studio where, among other projects, he’s recorded 9 albums for homeless street musicians he met on the Venice Boardwalk. Gautam Sinha a.k.a D_Poet is an "electronic producer and DJ currently based inside your speakers." When we asked him what he'd call his music, he didn't quite know how to respond (whilst mentioning that he doesn’t think it needs to be called anything). He still used the "inadequate phrase", 'chill bass'. Here's the deal. We first came across this producer after arriving upon his stunning remix of one of Sulk Station's standout tracks from their debut LP, Till you appear. Much like the original, his take on Piya II was dark and brooding yet sensual and layered with the lush, hypnotic vocals of Tanvi Rao. Nearly a year later, the Connecticut based producer, originally from Ahmedabad, has only let loose a handful of additional tunes, yet it sits at the precipice of a full-fledged crossover. He remains something of a mystery, yet is giving us enough to soak in, one bit at a time, and we're ready for him to step it up to the next level. You can sneak a peek of his other work via his SoundCloud here If that's not enough, we do know that's he's also the drummer in another band named, Camp. You can hear their music here. We do hope that Sinha truly tosses the shields and opens up on all future productions. We're lead to believe he'll be back in India soon, potentially with a release or two under his belt. Until then, we've got Wild City #060 to tie us over. A light, yet dark, spacious yet compact, instrumental yet vocal and downtempo yet raging mix. Showcasing his love for a brilliant and varied array of producers such as B.Lewis, Treekeeper, Diplo and Granity, it's a gripping mix leaving us wanting even more than just his SoundCloud feed. "I understand genres about as much as I understand women. This mix just has all the sorts of music I love. Find a dimly lit room with a subwoofer, a bunch of your good friends, and let the music do the rest." - D_Poet For a tracklist and further info, head over here: http://www.thewildcity.com/EN/music.xhtml/article/4362-wild-city-060-dpoet
