Marking four years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we examine how EU sanctions have evolved, expanded and intensified enforcement. As we mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this episode explores how EU sanctions on Russia have evolved from an emergency political response into the most extensive and technically sophisticated sanctions regime in the EU's history. Kinga Redłowska, Head of CFS at RUSI Europe, speaks with Brice De Schietere, Head of the Sanctions Division at the European External Action Service (EEAS), about how EU sanctions are designed, negotiated and implemented. The conversation examines the objectives behind restrictive measures, including targeting Russia's energy revenues, restricting access to critical technologies, countering sanctions circumvention and addressing the Russian shadow fleet. They also discuss enforcement challenges, coordination with G7 partners and the UK, the role of third countries and the growing use of autonomous EU sanctions regimes. Four years on, EU sanctions are no longer merely about signalling unity. They are about constraining Russia's war effort, increasing economic pressure and shaping Europe's broader security toolkit. As the war continues, the question is not whether the EU has sanctions instruments at its disposal, but how effectively it uses them in support of Ukraine's peace and security.

As the UK brings forward new electoral legislation, what should the government do about crypto donations, and does it really understand the risks? Discussion about cryptocurrencies is often polarised. Nowhere is this more so the case than in the ongoing discussion about the inclusion – or not – of cryptocurrency for donations to political parties in the UK. In this latest episode of the STR podcast, host Tom Keatinge is joined by Eliza Lockhart, a Research Fellow in our CFS team leading our work on Cryptocurrencies in UK Politics which examines the risk of opaque, foreign or malign influence entering UK politics via cryptocurrency donations; and James Gillespie, a CFS Associate Fellow, formerly of HM Treasury, to reflect on where the real threats from crypto to electoral integrity lie, and what to do about them.

The recovery trap that keeps people stuck with M.E/CFS One of the most frustrating parts of M.E./CFS recovery is doing all the right things…and still feeling like nothing is moving. You're trying. You're careful. You're doing your best. And yet, progress feels stuck. In this week's podcast, I talk about something I see all the time — what I call the recovery trap. It's not laziness. It's not lack of willpower. And it's definitely not because you're broken. It's a very common pattern that quietly keeps people stuck often without them realising it. In the episode, I walk through:why acceptance isn't giving upwhy chasing your old life can slow recoveryand how doing the right things at the wrong time can keep the body in survival mode If you've been plateaued, pushing and crashing, or feeling confused about what to do next… this will likely resonate. Here are 4 ways we can help. 1. Join our free community to meet others, be inspired, and get more recovery info - https://www.facebook.com/groups/cfshealthrecoveryhub 2. In a new book, author Anton Moiseienko argues that designing the right incentives will determine the future success of financial crime fighting. In this latest episode of the STR podcast, host Tom Keatinge is joined by former CFS colleague Anton Moiseienko, who is now a Senior Lecturer and Research Director at the Australian National University Law School in Canberra. They discuss Anton's new book, 'Doing Business with Criminals: Between Exclusion and Surveillance'. It is a book that provides an important assessment of the history of financial crime fighting and the policies and laws that govern our actions today; and questions whether we have created the right incentives to ensure all involved are pulling in the same direction, presenting a compelling argument of how the system needs to change.
The Missing Piece in M.E./CFS Recovery If you've been trying to recover from M.E./CFS and still feel stuck despite doing everything you're “supposed” to do — you're not alone. Most people aren't doing anything wrong. They're missing one foundational piece and without it, the body simply can't move forward. In this short podcast, I explain why effort, belief, and motivation alone don't lead to recovery and what actually needs to change for real progress to begin. For many people, this is the moment things finally click. Here are 4 ways we can help. 1. Are food systems changed bottom up or top down? How do diplomacy and negotiations on a high political level work? What is an effective way to bridge practice and policy? Today we discuss with diplomat Pio Wennubst and SFYN executive director Jorrit Kiewik, how policies and negotiations but also bottom-up approaches can change our food systems. What do Pio and Jorrit have in common? Apart from the faith in diplomacy and love for food, they were connected through Bites of Transfoodmation: an initiative that brings together young motivated individuals to create a community of practice and change the future of our food systems. Jorrit was one of the youth joining the initiative and Pio, founded BOT, via the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. My guest today, Dr. Bryan Dale, is here to explore these nuances. Bryan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environment, Agriculture, and Geography at Bishop's University. His research interests include food sovereignty, agroecology, climate change, environmental justice, social movements, and alternative economic initiatives (especially in food and farming). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Culinaria Research Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and a PhD and MA in Human Geography with a specialization in Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto's Department of Geography & Planning. He has a new paper out in Canadian Food Studies on consumers' roles in a just food system transition, going beyond individualistic or household behaviours to explore the broader frameworks required to achieve these goals in post-capitalistic food systems. These observations are based on his research and interviews with farmers and alternative food organizations in Ontario and Québec. Today, we explore these ideas, the tensions between farmers and consumers, and the role of state interventions in these food system potentials. Confused about when to let you teen girl have a TikTok account? Is she old enough for an Instagram account? Are you frustrated by your teenage daughter's constant use of her phone? Today I have cybersecurity expert Tom Arnold on with some tips on keeping your teens safe from online predators and the conversations you can have with her. Tom Arnold (CISSP, ISSMP, CISA, CFS, GCFE-Gold, GNFA, GWEB, GBFA) is a cybersecurity expert, digital forensics investigator, and educator. He lectures on digital forensics and incident response at San Jose State University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he is also helping to develop a new digital evidence and forensics degree program. A co-founder of Payment Software Company (PSC), now part of NCC Group, Arnold has led large-scale breach investigations—some involving more than 7,000 servers—and served as lead investigator in complex threat-hunting operations. He has testified before the U.S. Senate and House on cybersecurity legislation and sits on the steering committee for the Las Vegas branch of the USSS/Cyber Fraud Task Force. He also serves as Operations Manager at Cloud 10 Studios, a full-service animation studio that creates original series, long-form content, and commercial projects. His novel The Digital Detective: First Intervention was inspired by a real-life cybersecurity scare when Arnold's grandson was approached by a stranger on Roblox despite parental controls. That moment launched Arnold's mission to help families and schools recognize hidden online dangers—and to give kids the tools they need to stay safe in the digital world. Upgrade your biology in 10 minutes with this week's rundown from Dave Asprey. This episode breaks down the six biggest stories in biohacking and health tech, from sleep hormones to mitochondrial rejuvenation, giving you the data you need to live longer, think faster, and perform at your peak. This episode covers: • The Melatonin Heart Warning Everyone Missed A major new study from the American Heart Association reveals that long-term melatonin users face nearly twice the risk of heart failure and 3.5 times higher hospitalization rates. Once considered a harmless sleep aid, melatonin's hormonal effects may disrupt cardiovascular recovery, testosterone, and blood pressure regulation when used nightly. The takeaway: melatonin is a short-term circadian reset tool, not a forever supplement. Source: American Heart Association — newsroom.heart.org/news/long-term-use-of-melatonin-supplements-to-support-sleep-may-have-negative-health-effects • Bryan Johnson's Extreme Microplastics Detox Biohacker Bryan Johnson shared lab-verified results showing an 85% reduction in microplastics in his semen after one year of daily 200°F dry saunas followed by ice packs on the groin. It's not peer reviewed yet, but it'ssparking global discussion about environmental toxins, fertility, and detoxification. Whether or not you follow his protocol, this study highlights how widespread microplastics have become and how heat, sweat, and smarter exposure control may help fight back. Source: New York Post — nypost.com/2025/10/23/health/biohacker-bryan-johnson-got-rid-of-85-of-microplastics-from-his-semen • Urolithin A: The Mitochondrial Molecule That Strengthens Immunity A peer-reviewed human trial published in Nature Aging found that four weeks of daily Urolithin A (Mitopure®) supplementation improved immune function in adults aged 45–70, increasing youthful CD8 T-cells, natural killer cells, and mitochondrial performance inside immune cells. By triggering mitophagy, your body's cleanup process for old mitochondria, Urolithin A enhances energy, resilience, and immune strength. It's the clearest evidence yet that we can modulate immune aging through mitochondrial renewal. Head to timeline.com/dave to get 10% off your first order. Source: BioSpace — biospace.com/press-releases/timeline-continues-to-build-the-most-clinically-researched-longevity-products-targeting-immune-brain-and-muscle-aging • Google's New AI Model That “Talks” to Cells Google DeepMind and Yale launched Cell2Sentence-Scale, an open-source AI model that lets scientists query cellular pathways in natural language. The system can predict how cells transition from healthy to cancerous states and identify molecular switches that might reverse those changes. It's compressing years of biology into days and democratizing research for small labs and independent scientists alike. Isn't AI a beautiful thing? Source: Google DeepMind — blog.google/technology/ai/google-gemma-ai-cancer-therapy-discovery • Omega-3s Calm the Brain and the Temper A massive new meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials shows omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) reduce aggression by up to 28%. That includes both reactive anger and planned aggression. By lowering neuroinflammation and stabilizing cell membranes, omega-3s appear to balance dopamine and serotonin, proving that healthy fats aren't just heart food, they're emotional regulators too. Source: Science Alert — sciencealert.com/one-dietary-supplement-was-shown-to-reduce-aggression-by-up-to-28 • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Finally Gets a Biomarker For the first time, researchers have developed a blood test that accurately identifies chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) using DNA methylation and micro-RNA expression patterns. This breakthrough distinguishes CFS from other autoimmune and viral conditions, marking a turning point for millions of patients long dismissed by traditional medicine. It's proof that data-driven diagnostics can transform how we understand mystery illnesses.
