The Chicago Film Society screens wonderful seasons of features and shorts at Chicago theaters, carefully curated with printed program notes, all of which I've enjoyed from afar. I was delighted to kick off another new year of the podcast with two CFS members (and projectionists): Rebecca Lyon and Cameron Worden. Since the Chicago Film Society is between its Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 seasons, we talked about some past programming, including: The Unholy Three (the 1930 sound version), Parents (directed by Bob Balaban), ephemera collected by filmmaker Heather McAdams, home movies from the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago, and Wes Archer's extraordinary animated short that prefigured Beavis and Butt-head. Bonus: a sneak peek at a couple of events coming up at Chicago Film Society in the spring. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass

The recovery trap that keeps people stuck with M.E/CFS One of the most frustrating parts of M.E./CFS recovery is doing all the right things…and still feeling like nothing is moving. You're trying. You're careful. You're doing your best. And yet, progress feels stuck. In this week's podcast, I talk about something I see all the time — what I call the recovery trap. It's not laziness. It's not lack of willpower. And it's definitely not because you're broken. It's a very common pattern that quietly keeps people stuck often without them realising it. In the episode, I walk through:why acceptance isn't giving upwhy chasing your old life can slow recoveryand how doing the right things at the wrong time can keep the body in survival mode If you've been plateaued, pushing and crashing, or feeling confused about what to do next… this will likely resonate. Here are 4 ways we can help. 1. Join our free community to meet others, be inspired, and get more recovery info - https://www.facebook.com/groups/cfshealthrecoveryhub 2. The CFS attending to several fires across regional SA during a day of scorching heat, a new safety reminder issued after several deaths in SA in recent years involving quad bikes and ATVs, and a NSW farmer reflects on his experience of training his livestock with virtual fencing technology.
In a new book, author Anton Moiseienko argues that designing the right incentives will determine the future success of financial crime fighting. In this latest episode of the STR podcast, host Tom Keatinge is joined by former CFS colleague Anton Moiseienko, who is now a Senior Lecturer and Research Director at the Australian National University Law School in Canberra. They discuss Anton's new book, 'Doing Business with Criminals: Between Exclusion and Surveillance'. It is a book that provides an important assessment of the history of financial crime fighting and the policies and laws that govern our actions today; and questions whether we have created the right incentives to ensure all involved are pulling in the same direction, presenting a compelling argument of how the system needs to change.
The Missing Piece in M.E./CFS Recovery If you've been trying to recover from M.E./CFS and still feel stuck despite doing everything you're “supposed” to do — you're not alone. Most people aren't doing anything wrong. They're missing one foundational piece and without it, the body simply can't move forward. In this short podcast, I explain why effort, belief, and motivation alone don't lead to recovery and what actually needs to change for real progress to begin. For many people, this is the moment things finally click. Here are 4 ways we can help. 1. Join our free community to meet others, be inspired, and get more recovery info - https://www.facebook.com/groups/cfshealthrecoveryhub 2. Are food systems changed bottom up or top down? How do diplomacy and negotiations on a high political level work? What is an effective way to bridge practice and policy? Today we discuss with diplomat Pio Wennubst and SFYN executive director Jorrit Kiewik, how policies and negotiations but also bottom-up approaches can change our food systems. What do Pio and Jorrit have in common? Apart from the faith in diplomacy and love for food, they were connected through Bites of Transfoodmation: an initiative that brings together young motivated individuals to create a community of practice and change the future of our food systems. Jorrit was one of the youth joining the initiative and Pio, founded BOT, via the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. My guest today, Dr. Bryan Dale, is here to explore these nuances. Bryan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environment, Agriculture, and Geography at Bishop's University. His research interests include food sovereignty, agroecology, climate change, environmental justice, social movements, and alternative economic initiatives (especially in food and farming). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Culinaria Research Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and a PhD and MA in Human Geography with a specialization in Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto's Department of Geography & Planning. He has a new paper out in Canadian Food Studies on consumers' roles in a just food system transition, going beyond individualistic or household behaviours to explore the broader frameworks required to achieve these goals in post-capitalistic food systems. These observations are based on his research and interviews with farmers and alternative food organizations in Ontario and Québec. Today, we explore these ideas, the tensions between farmers and consumers, and the role of state interventions in these food system potentials. Upgrade your biology in 10 minutes with this week's rundown from Dave Asprey. This episode breaks down the six biggest stories in biohacking and health tech, from sleep hormones to mitochondrial rejuvenation, giving you the data you need to live longer, think faster, and perform at your peak. This episode covers: • The Melatonin Heart Warning Everyone Missed A major new study from the American Heart Association reveals that long-term melatonin users face nearly twice the risk of heart failure and 3.5 times higher hospitalization rates. Once considered a harmless sleep aid, melatonin's hormonal effects may disrupt cardiovascular recovery, testosterone, and blood pressure regulation when used nightly. The takeaway: melatonin is a short-term circadian reset tool, not a forever supplement. Source: American Heart Association — newsroom.heart.org/news/long-term-use-of-melatonin-supplements-to-support-sleep-may-have-negative-health-effects • Bryan Johnson's Extreme Microplastics Detox Biohacker Bryan Johnson shared lab-verified results showing an 85% reduction in microplastics in his semen after one year of daily 200°F dry saunas followed by ice packs on the groin. It's not peer reviewed yet, but it'ssparking global discussion about environmental toxins, fertility, and detoxification. Whether or not you follow his protocol, this study highlights how widespread microplastics have become and how heat, sweat, and smarter exposure control may help fight back. Source: New York Post — nypost.com/2025/10/23/health/biohacker-bryan-johnson-got-rid-of-85-of-microplastics-from-his-semen • Urolithin A: The Mitochondrial Molecule That Strengthens Immunity A peer-reviewed human trial published in Nature Aging found that four weeks of daily Urolithin A (Mitopure®) supplementation improved immune function in adults aged 45–70, increasing youthful CD8 T-cells, natural killer cells, and mitochondrial performance inside immune cells. By triggering mitophagy, your body's cleanup process for old mitochondria, Urolithin A enhances energy, resilience, and immune strength. It's the clearest evidence yet that we can modulate immune aging through mitochondrial renewal. Head to timeline.com/dave to get 10% off your first order. Source: BioSpace — biospace.com/press-releases/timeline-continues-to-build-the-most-clinically-researched-longevity-products-targeting-immune-brain-and-muscle-aging • Google's New AI Model That “Talks” to Cells Google DeepMind and Yale launched Cell2Sentence-Scale, an open-source AI model that lets scientists query cellular pathways in natural language. The system can predict how cells transition from healthy to cancerous states and identify molecular switches that might reverse those changes. It's compressing years of biology into days and democratizing research for small labs and independent scientists alike. Isn't AI a beautiful thing? Source: Google DeepMind — blog.google/technology/ai/google-gemma-ai-cancer-therapy-discovery • Omega-3s Calm the Brain and the Temper A massive new meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials shows omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) reduce aggression by up to 28%. That includes both reactive anger and planned aggression. By lowering neuroinflammation and stabilizing cell membranes, omega-3s appear to balance dopamine and serotonin, proving that healthy fats aren't just heart food, they're emotional regulators too. Source: Science Alert — sciencealert.com/one-dietary-supplement-was-shown-to-reduce-aggression-by-up-to-28 • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Finally Gets a Biomarker For the first time, researchers have developed a blood test that accurately identifies chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) using DNA methylation and micro-RNA expression patterns. This breakthrough distinguishes CFS from other autoimmune and viral conditions, marking a turning point for millions of patients long dismissed by traditional medicine. It's proof that data-driven diagnostics can transform how we understand mystery illnesses. Do Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) really improve children's mental health?Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) are safe, structured places established quickly in emergencies where children can play, learn, and receive psychosocial support, to promote protection and wellbeing. In this second episode, Sarah Harrison, Acting Director of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub, speaks with Professor Alastair Ager, Queen Margaret University and Columbia University and Phiona Koyiet, MHPSS Lead, World Vision International, for a practitioner-focused reflection.Together they examine what the evidence says about effectiveness and impact of CFS for children's wellbeing, protection and mental health, drawing on rigorous research (see below) and unpack what this means in practice: setting and monitoring quality indicators, ensuring skilled facilitators (“animators”), and the importance of integrating CFS within a tiered system of care with clear referral pathways - since CFS are not ‘silver bullets'. They discuss field adaptations, cultural relevance, costs and staffing, and how evidence has shaped World Vision's programming guidance.Key resources for practitionersTools and guidance for monitoring and evaluating Child Friendly SpacesThe Toolkit for Child Friendly Spaces in Humanitarian SettingsRead more about the research:Evaluating the longer-term mental health, developmental and systems impact of Child Friendly Spaces in humanitarian emergencies An RCT of enhanced Child Friendly Space interventions for children affected by conflict and displacementEvidence from the Frontline: Mental Health in Crisis-Affected Contexts is a six-episode mini-series produced in collaboration between the MHPSS Hub and Elrha, designed for practitioners working in humanitarian and crisis contexts, the series highlights impactful interventions and practical insights from experts in the field.
For over three decades, Felix Finster has been developing a unique and ambitious reformulation of physics known as Causal Fermion Systems (CFS). Physicists usually describe the world in terms of fields defined on a spacetime manifold. Within this familiar framework, abstract quantities such as correlations between matter fields at different points in spacetime can be computed. In mathematical language, these correlations are captured by operators acting on a Hilbert space. What Felix realized is that this process can be reversed. If you start with a suitable collection of operators on a Hilbert space, satisfying certain mathematical properties, you can in principle reconstruct the underlying spacetime and fields that would give rise to those operators as operators of correlations. In this sense, Causal Fermion Systems offers a dual description of reality. On the one hand, reality can be described in terms of symmetries, fields, and manifolds - the usual language of physics. On the other hand, CFS proposes that reality can just as well be described using abstract structures: Hilbert spaces, operators, and measures on sets of operators. Spacetime, matter, and everything we observe then emerges from these underlying mathematical quantities. The beauty of reformulating physics this way is that it opens up an entirely new framework in which to explore some of the deepest open questions in physics: What is spacetime like at the smallest scales? Why do we see precisely the particles we do in experiments? The hope is that within the CFS framework, answers to such questions might become more natural or even inevitable. Of course, we can't cover a 30-year research program in full detail in a single conversation. The goal here is to get a sense of the flavor of Felix's approach to physics. For the full details, you can explore Felix's books (e.g. https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/causal-fermion-systems/CCA6DE1E1F4DA3AC0EF6729664A5D5B9 ). ►Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/qQl51qifus0 ►Find out more about Felix's work here: https://www.uni-regensburg.de/mathematik/mathematik-1/startseite/index.html https://causal-fermion-system.com/

Dave is one of 4 owners of a company called Apla-Tech. Apla-Tech is unique because it is one of only two companies in the drywall space that offers CFS or Continuous Flow Systems. What that means is that they make tools that you don't have to pump mud into. You simple work the tools and keep them fed with an exorbitant amount of mud. This means ease of use and productivity. Dave has made it his passion and this is what we talk about on the 144th episode of The Drywall Podcast. You can tell that he's passionate about what he's up to and that emanates from this interview. CFS recovery in just 6 months? Rob's GP told him: “There's nothing wrong with you.” But he knew something was deeply wrong. He'd wake up inflamed head-to-toe. His mind foggy, his muscles aching, his energy completely gone. This was a man who used to run races and live life at full speed. Suddenly, he couldn't even trust his own body. The scariest part? His tests were “perfect.” His doctor dismissed him. He felt invisible. Rob had a choice: keep sliding downhill — or find a new path forward. Fast forward just six months… the inflammation was gone, his energy restored, and he was back racing and living life again. If you've ever been told “there's nothing wrong with you” while your body screams otherwise… this is a must-watch. Here are 4 ways we can help. 1. In 2021, Commonwealth Fusion Systems proved it had built the most powerful magnet in the world. The breakthrough was based on a specific material - a tape - that conducts massive amounts of current with very little loss. Rick Needham, Chief Commercial Officer for CFS, says the breakthrough led to a $1.8 billion Series B fundraising round. Since then, the company has turned its attention to turning this scientific breakthrough into a commercial technology. And in late 2024, the company announced it had signed a deal with Dominion Energy Virginia to build the world's first commercial fusion power plant, ARC. In this episode, Lara talks with Rick about how CFS plans to take its technology from the lab to real-world deployment. They discuss major milestones, like proving net energy gain and finding a customer for a technology that has never been proven in the field. And Rick makes the argument that fusion is much closer than most people think. Credits: Hosted by Lara Pierpoint. Produced by Erin Hardick. Edited by Anne Bailey and Stephen Lacey.
