Johns Hopkins earthquake engineer and cold-formed steel researcher Ben Schafer introduces the NHERI CFS10 project underway at the NHERI UC San Diego shake table facility. Tara Hutchinson, Schafer's co-PI on the project, is a research engineer at UC San Diego. (We will meet Hutchinson in an upcoming episode.) The CFS10 shake table experiment caps off a long-term collaboration between NSF researchers and industry. The goal: to understand seismic performance of taller cold-formed steel buildings. The structure on the shake table mimics an apartment building or hotel; it exceeds current height and system limits – which will help the team understand how far engineers can go designing for CFS structural elements, subsystems, and non-structural elements, like stairs, gas lines and sprinkler systems. The CFS10 shake table tests are slated for early June, 2025. Follow along on the UCSD live cameras: https://nheri.ucsd.edu/live-cams

She discusses the complexities of diagnosing and treating long COVID, particularly focusing on the role of cranio-cervical instability (CCI) and its impact on patients' health. Dr. Brown emphasizes the importance of understanding the symptoms, the challenges in accessing proper care, and the need for collaboration among healthcare providers to improve patient outcomes. She also offers insights into treatment options and encourages both patients and doctors to take ownership of their health and care.BioDr Katie Brown: Katie Brown, MD has dedicated her career to learning how to treat ME/CFS and related conditions, including Long COVID. Her interest stems from her own experience with the disease which she developed during her first year of medical school. This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Answer Questions River Rescue Gear at River Hardware Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Highwater Middle Fork of the Salmon I'm invited on a MFS trip June 10. Super psyched! The trip leader wants to cap the trip at 5 feet, but I bet it will be higher. I'm pushing for a careful safe trip, even if higher than 5 feet. I feel up to the challenge 100%. The crew is solid. Any thoughts on flows and wisdom of going? I hate the idea of the permit being canceled. Thanks! Topic: Guide Shoes What about guides wearing Chacos... Do you have any thoughts about that? Topic: Rope Selection You've covered a lot on static line length and diameter on your previous videos, and I'm curious to hear more about material and buoyancy. On whitewater gear you offer the sterling super static 2 rope, but I don't believe that's a high floating material, and is quite a bit heavier without being stronger than some other equivalent 3/8" ropes like ultra line. Can you review a bit more on rope design/materials vs use in whitewater rescue applications? Sterling looks to be the standard in ropes, and their ultra line appears like the best overall option for weight/strength vs flotation. Only downside I can see is that ultra line is not available in sizes other than 1/4" and 3/8" if someone needs 11mm or larger. Topic: 18' Raft Owyhee What's your low flow cutoff for getting a medium to lightly loaded 18' raft down the Lower Owhyee? I'm able to make technical moves just not interested in getting high centered or squeezed all the time and having to get out to shove a whole bunch. Nuisance rapid for instance. Does an 18' even fit between boulders at flows less than 1K CFS? I'm 5 days out from launch and flows have been very slowly dropping, currently around 1300 CFS to 1400 CFS with no major precip in forecast. Motoring out and my 18' has the registration. Have a smaller raft with fishing frame and registration but its not rigged to motor and would like to avoid that hassle of frame changeover and assembly if possible. Thanks for your insights! Topic: IK Safety Thanks for this channel; it is an excellent resource for people like me who are new to rafting. Two buddies and I took the NWRC Class III rowing school last year, which was awesome. The Lower Salmon was one of the rivers the instructors recommended as a good first private trip, so we are planning a multi-day trip with our families on the Lower Salmon in mid-July. We will have three rafts. We have several high school kids in our group. I am considering bringing two or three inflatable kayaks for them to use if they want more excitement than riding in the rafts. Everyone will be in helmets and PFDs. The kids are strong swimmers and comfortable in the water. I have three questions: Where should we put the IKs in the group? I am thinking between the middle and last raft as that would leave two downstream rafts in case they swim. Would having three IKs in the water at one time be too many given we only have three rafts? Could you talk about how trip leaders monitor IKs on your commercial trips.

The seemingly outsized strength of cold-formed steel is not well-known. In this episode, earthquake engineer Ben Schafer, Johns Hopkins University, describes a research-industry collaboration with the automotive industry resulting in code changes for high-strength sheet-steel. Sheet steel has also been successfully tested in flooring systems. The upcoming CFS10 shake table test at UC San Diego is the high-rise building test for cold-formed steel. Schafer addresses misconceptions that structural engineers have regarding CFS: Basically: cold-formed steel looks too thin to be strong. However, with high-strength sheet steel, deformations do not correlate to lack of strength, which is something that automotive and aircraft engineers have long understood.

Meet Johns Hopkins University engineer Ben Schafer, authority on cold-formed steel (CFS), also known as sheet steel or thin steel. Schafer explains that CFS is both strong and ductile – and therefore a remarkably high-performance structural framing material. Builders use CFS in a variety of ways – including as building-frame members, much like timber. Schafer's research centers on CFS as structural framing to resist wind and earthquake loading. Thin and lightweight, CFS members comprise relatively little material; in the US, all cold-formed steel is made from recycled materials.

A fierce forty-something woman tries to escape traumatic memories by participating in the Ironman triathlon, only to be diagnosed with CFS. As her life unravels, she clings to an unlikely friend who helps and then hinders her journey to recovery. Get to know the writer; What is your screenplay about? This film is centered around the protagonist Jade, a 40-something newly single woman who is very driven in her work life and with her athletic pursuits. On the surface she appears to be chasing her dreams, but in reality, she is running away from a nightmare. This film explores themes of how people cope with trauma. We've all seen stories about people who dive into counselling, others who self-medicate or those who sink into depression. In this story, the character doubles-down on pursuing her goals. We know that society celebrates and admires driven people. In this story Jade's drive causes her life to unravel, and she sinks into a state of self-loathing. This film also deals with themes of identity. Jade struggles with the loss of her identity because she defines herself by the things she does, not who she is at the core. Rewiring Jade explores the complex relationships Jade has with unlikely friends who both help and hinder her journey. What motivated you to write this screenplay? I struggled with a chronic illness for a decade and my recovery felt transformational. When I came out the other side, I was not the same person as before. Writing this script allowed me to process and release the traumatic memories, making it a cathartic experience! Adding unexpected humour to the story helped me take my power back from an experience that almost destroyed me. This film is not literally about me – rather it is inspired by what I went through. While the characters are fictional, a few are inspired by a combination of real people and imaginative elements. While snippets of the story mirror real events, the main similarity that aligns with my experience is how Jade felt in certain situations. I have also tried to be as realistic as possible about the impact of CFS, but it has been toned down for the film. This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Upper Wind Whitewater Festival Answer Questions Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: 2D vs 3D Video What does your "2D vs 3D" framework give us that the International Scale of River Difficulty doesn't already? You posted an interesting video about 2D vs 3D boating. Your argument for the distinction between 2D and 3D is solid and I agree with most things you say. However, I don't really see the value of this system considering we already have the International Scale of River Difficulty to describe rivers. What does "2D vs 3D" tell us that class I-III vs class IV-V doesn't already? When a new framework for classification or description is invented in science and engineering, it has some clear differences and advantages to other existing frameworks. At the least, it should add some level of nuance to the conversation or be beneficial in niche situations. Anyways, that's my overly-analytic peer review of your idea. I appreciate you taking the time to bring new ideas to the sport. Topic:River Hardware Blower Adapters Have you test-fit any of your blower adapters with the Bauer blower from Harbor Freight? Topic: Flip in Green Wall Three person, Three Boat trip on the Illinois. Flow was 1700 CFS and dropping. We ran a single boat down while two people set safety below harvey. After we got a single boat through, the two other captains went up to run the rapid. During their run, the first boat flipped just prior to getting to the doors. The captain did an amazing job self rescuing himself, and made it to the shore prior to swimming down the crux move. Now my question. We had a boat flipped, moving downstream. I decided to pull out of the eddy and work on getting the boat moved to the shore. I didn't get the boat into an eddy until the rapid after green wall. While you give tips on getting boats recovered in this situation, and will you give feedback on our safety plan on how we ran and set safety.

Today, Cheryl from Australia, shares her story of LDN for long Covid that resulted in fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I got COVID in August 2021, which resulted in a severe infection with double pneumonia and landed me in the hospital for a month. When I arrived home from the hospital a month later, that was exactly when long Covid began. However, back then, it was still relatively new, and nobody knew much about it. It is actually very common for long Covid to set in a month after having Covid. As you mentioned, I've since been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia, which are my worst symptoms.Would you like me to go through the treatment options?Yes, I would. I'd like to know when you were diagnosed, what treatment options you were given, and what has happened from then until now.I had to seek help from a long Covid clinic because no treatment options were offered, as the doctors simply didn't know what to do with my symptoms. I experienced severe pain throughout my upper body and in all of my joints, which I rated at 9 to 10 out of 10. They put me on a high dose of Gabapentin (2400 milligrams) as a treatment option, which helped alleviate the pain, but also caused drowsiness and fatigue. I eventually started researching and found out about low-dose naltrexone (LDN), which my doctor was willing to prescribe. As I gradually increased the LDN dosage, I was able to decrease the Gabapentin slowly as well. Over the years, my pain has decreased from 9-10 out of 10 to 1-2 out of 10, which has significantly improved my quality of life.I experienced a lot of drowsiness, which wasn't great since I was already dealing with fatigue. Those were my main side effects, although I also experienced extra fatigue. I always took it at night. I was on it for at least a year. When I was on Gabapentin, my pain levels were still at least 8 out of 10. They didn't reduce much, but they took the edge off the pain. The pain was very severe, and I had to take a high dose just to cope with it. It got me to a level where I could manage, but I couldn't do much. My fatigue was so bad that I could only go out once a week to shop for 18 months. The post-exertional malaise was so bad that for 48 hours after going out, I would sleep for 24 hours straight. I had to set an alarm to wake up and eat before going back to sleep.I have been taking Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) for the past 18 months, and it has significantly reduced my fatigue. It took some time, but now I can actually get up and function. Before taking LDN, I was practically nonfunctional. Taking it when I wake up works best for me, giving me a bit of energy to cope with the day. It wasn't just about the duration of taking LDN, but also finding the right dosage for me. It's been a combination of factors that has allowed me to really improve. Between 8 and 12 months, I didn't experience much improvement, and I could only shower once a week. However, now I can go out every day, and my post-exertional malaise is almost non-existent. I always advise people to see LDN as a long-term solution and not to expect instant results. It took a while for me, but it has definitely been worth it. Some people may notice amazing results in the first month, but for others, like me, it takes time and patience. It's not easy to be patient when you're not feeling well, but sticking with it is well worth it. LDN has also significantly reduced my severe shortness of breath and swallowing issues. I used to struggle to swallow medications, but that hasn't happened in quite a few months. My nighttime throat spasms have also reduced in severity and frequency. Despite being diagnosed with paralyzed vocal cords and vocal cord dysfunction, a combination of LDN and exercises taught by a speech pathologist has helped me greatly. Additionally, the headaches with concurrent eye pain have stopped, which

Our podcast show today features Jason Mikula, publisher of Fintech Business Weekly; a newsletter going beyond the headlines to analyze the technology, regulatory and business model trends, driving the rapidly evolving financial services ecosystem at the intersection of traditional banking, payments, FinTech and crypto. We discuss his recently released book, titled “Banking as a Service: Opportunities, Challenges, and Risks of New Banking Business Models” (Kogan Page 2024). The publisher describes the book as follows: “This book provides a comprehensive look at banking-as-a-service (BaaS), equipping readers with an understanding of the origins, evolution, future and applications of BaaS and the key differences across global markets.” BaaS is a game changer in the financial services sector, radically transforming both how consumers experience financial products and the business models delivering them. “Banking as a Service” cuts through the hype to provide a measured overview of BaaS, helping readers to demystify a complex evolving field, and understand its key opportunities, challenges, and risks. It provides a framework for understanding where BaaS came from, how BaaS changes the economics and business models of banking products and services, its impact on key stakeholders, and its key regulatory implications. “Banking as a Service” explains how business and operating models work, exploring different models such as interchange, deposit gathering, loan origination-to-distribute, legacy, API-first, own license, match-making and bank service providers, and offers a framework for thinking about whether or not they're sustainable. It explores how BaaS operating and business models compare in different global territories and is supported by real-world examples and cases profiling organizations such as Blue Ridge Bank, Unit, Synapse, Goldman Sachs, Railsr, Starling, Solaris, Cacao Paycard, QNB, OnePipe, Airwallex, Nium and Pomelo. It also explains the differences between BaaS, embedded finance and “open banking.” Alan and Jason discuss the answers to the following questions and topics: 1. What do we mean when we say "banking as a service"? 2. What are the different BaaS business models/operating models? 3. What led to the explosion in banking-as-a-service? 4. Why have bank/fintech partnerships had a rough go of it lately in the US and is that likely to change with a new administration? 5. What is (or what should be) regulators' role in supervising non-bank entities in the BaaS value chain (eg, middleware, customer-facing fintechs)? 6. What is an FBO and are FBOs the "original sin" of banking-as-a-service? 7. What advice would you give to banks considering getting into the BaaS space? How do you see the market evolving from here - for banks, for technology providers, and for customer-facing companies? 8. What advice would you give to fintechs that rely on a bank partner or are looking for one? Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel and former chair for 25 years of the Consumer Financial Services Group, hosts the discussion.

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 390: Yoga for People with Limited Energy with Katie Blecker & Audrey Description: People with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or other health conditions may have limited energy. As yoga teachers, what are some things we should know when teaching people with limited energy? What are some things that are helpful, and what should we avoid? Katie Blecker and Audrey share their insights as yoga teachers with limited energy. Katie Blecker is a yoga teacher, advocate, and visual artist. Her lived experience with complex chronic illness informs her worldview and inspires her passion for disability advocacy. In her work as a trauma-informed yoga facilitator both online and in-person, Katie focuses on supporting folks who live with chronic illness and pain, disability, and chronic stress using tools such as therapeutic asana, pranayama, and meditation. Audrey also is a yoga teacher and advocate whose experience with complex chronic illnesses informs her way of practising and teaching. As a disabled and neurodivergent person, her philosophy is that the practice will adapt to the person, not the other way around. Audrey devotes herself to sharing the transformational tools of yoga with other people so they too can find a practice that serves them, where community, access, and joy are centred. In this episode, Katie and Audrey share their personal journeys with chronic illness and how these experiences have shaped their inclusive teaching methodologies. They explain what "limited energy" means and how it differs from someone who is simply more tired than usual, and how their own conditions influence their work as yoga teachers.
