This week on The Conversation, Nadine Matheson is joined by the insightful former Lynne McEwan, who also writes as Eva McCrae for a conversation that covers two remarkable careers, the craft of storytelling, and why the truth about crime always begins somewhere ordinary. As Mae digs deeper, she uncovers layers of complexity surrounding the case, revealing the impact of her own past on her determination to seek the truth. Lynne shares her experiences of writing about working-class women in crime fiction, the challenges of portraying Glasgow authentically, and the importance of empathy in storytelling.Listeners will find inspiration in Lynne's reflections on overcoming personal challenges, including her hearing loss, and how it has shaped her unique perspective as a writer. David and Drew unpack six organizational uses of injury metrics — from controlling work and motivating the workforce to self-promotion and risk signaling — before distilling these into four broad symbolic meanings: management control, image management, risk management, and trust in leadership. The episode reveals that injury rates are unstable signs whose meaning shifts depending on context, observer, and organizational culture. Understanding the emotional and symbolic dimensions of these metrics is shown to be essential for any safety professional seeking to challenge, replace, or engage more honestly with the measurement systems that shape how safety is understood and acted upon in their organization. Discussion Points: (00:00) The intersection of safety measurement and social safety research (03:26) The paper — Interpreting injury metrics (06:57) Known limitations and critiques of injury rate metrics (09:03) The puzzle of why injury rates persist despite their well-documented flaws (10:46) Semiotics as an analytical lens for understanding safety indicators as symbols (14:00) Research methodology — 20 interviews with experienced OHS professionals (16:18) Six organizational uses of injury metrics (26:40) Four broad symbolic meanings of injury metrics (36:45) Safety activities as anxiety reduction and the central role of emotion (38:56) Practical takeaways for safety professionals and researchers Like and follow, send us your comments and suggestions for future show topics! Quotes: Drew Rae: "People are not dumb. These criticisms are fairly easy to understand, and there are so many of them from so many different directions that people know these criticisms and believe some of them. But injury rates still happen. That puzzle needs to be understood." Drew Rae: "Something could be a bad measure of whether you're actually safe, but a good measure of how your injuries are affecting these other types of risks that you're facing." Drew Rae: "Safety activities are driven by affect — emotion matters. We do things in safety because we are afraid, or because we are uncertain, because we are anxious. And our safety activities change those emotions." Drew Rae: "We've now got both pieces of the puzzle. We know that they don't work objectively, and we know that people keep using them because of these symbolic meanings. That's pretty much the full story about injury rates." David Provan: "Be curious about the meaning that's being ascribed to the injury rates in your own organization." Resources: Primary paper discussed: Pomeroy, J. & Pilbeam, C. (2025). Creative work has always had its ups and downs, but lately the dips feel longer and the competition sharper. Budgets that once seemed safe are now under constant pressure, and clients expect more for less—often faster than before. Technology keeps shifting the rules, blurring the lines between what used to be specialized skills. For agencies and production companies, it's not just about making great work anymore—it's about proving you're still essential in a market that's always moving the goalposts. https://youtu.be/UhfyKQnkoxs?si=Z_zoEQs5FUGq1Prc Ross MacRae, founder of BikiniList and AgencySource, has spent over three decades helping creative teams grow and adapt. Today, he addresses how agencies can weather industry slowdowns by focusing on consistent networking and relationship building. He stresses the need to stay visible, even when work is scarce, and to nurture client trust over time. His advice centered on steady outreach, strategic positioning, and resilience in shifting markets. Stay tuned! Quotes: “If change is a constant part of what we do, then we need to accept that when things change outside our control, we can use the opportunities that presents—because change isn't all bad.” “You've got to give yourself a default diary—a timetable that allows you time in your week, every week, to do networking and pipeline. HRRN's Trainer Talk presented by Fasig-Tipton featuring Don MacRae
In this episode, Mike speaks with Dr Pamela MacRae, Professor of Ministry to Women and Ministry to Victims of Sexual Exploitation at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. With decades of experience in local church ministry and nearly twenty years teaching at Moody, Dr MacRae offers thoughtful insight on how preachers can communicate the Bible with clarity and care - particularly when speaking to congregations that are often more than half women.Pam reflects on the first time she taught the Bible, how she has grown as a communicator, and what bad habits she has worked to leave behind. She and Mike also discuss her chapter How Women Hear the Sermon from The Moody Handbook of Preaching, exploring the dynamics of how women engage with preaching and what opportunities and challenges that presents. The conversation also touches on a class she teaches called Pastoral Care of Women, which equips male pastoral students to preach and minister more thoughtfully to the women in their churches. She offers advice to male pastors and preachers - particularly those from complementarian settings - on how to serve the women in their churches with greater attentiveness and understanding. This episode is a valuable conversation for anyone serious about teaching the Bible faithfully to the whole church.Recommended resources: Shepherding Women in Pain: Real Women, Real Issues, and What You Need to Know to Truly HelpBeverly Hislophttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7944332-shepherding-women-in-pain Worthy: Celebrating the Value of WomenBy Elyse Fitzpatrick and Eric Schumacher :https://elysefitzpatrick.com/book/worthy-celebrating-the-value-of-women/ Cheer Her On interview with Dr MacRae:https://open.spotify.com/episode/7HeHAKwRTwTYESbPres1bq?si=fc0f8cffa8764a78 Register for our next in person training event August 22-23, 2025 St Petersburg, Florida Calvary Chapel St. Petersburghttps://expositorscollective.org/gatherings/The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. In November 1976, 36-year-old Renee MacRae and her 3-year-old son Andrew vanished without a trace after leaving their Inverness home for what was meant to be a weekend away. What followed was one of the most baffling missing persons cases Scotland has ever seen - a case with no suspects, no evidence and no answers for over four decades. When I first began researching this one, I knew nothing about it. What unfolded before my eyes as I dug deeper left me stunned. Layer by layer, the truth began to surface, and by the time it did, the damage had already been done.Join my Patreon community at patreon.com/britishmurders for exclusive perks, including early access to ad-free episodes, bonus episodes and content, exciting giveaways, and welcome goodies!Follow me on social media:Facebook | British Murders with Stuart BluesInstagram | @britishmurdersTikTok | @britishmurdersJoin the private Facebook group:British Murders Podcast - Discussion GroupVisit my website:britishmurders.comIntro music:David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'davidjohnbrady.comDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives.
