The Big Lies & the Truth About Happiness with Dr. Laurie Santos

We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle

1. One easy thing we can do to increase our happiness by 1% when we're feeling tired and overwhelmed. 2. Our misconception that happiness is about our circumstances–the next promotion, the new relationship–and the reality that often people with fantastic circumstances are miserable. 3. Why our emotions flow directly from our thoughts–and how we can improve our wellbeing by changing our mind's interpretation of events. About Laurie: Dr. Laurie Santos is Professor of Psychology and Head of Silliman College at Yale University. Dr. Santos is an expert on human cognition and the cognitive biases that impede better choices. Her course, “Psychology and the Good Life,” teaches students what the science of psychology says about how to make wiser choices and live a life that's happier and more fulfilling. The class is Yale's most popular course in over 300 years and has been adapted into a free Coursera program that has been taken by over 3.3 million people to date. Dr. Santos has been featured in numerous news outlets including the New York Times, NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, CBS This Morning, NPR, GQ Magazine, Slate, CNN and O, The Oprah Magazine. Dr. Santos is a winner of numerous awards both for her science and teaching from institutions such as Yale and the American Psychological Association. She has been featured as one of Popular Science's “Brilliant 10” young minds and was named TIME's “Leading Campus Celebrity.” Her podcast, The Happiness Lab, launched in 2019 has over 48 million downloads. Ep. 564: A War Over the "History of Slavery"?

The Brion McClanahan Show

GQ Magazine thinks America is at war over "the history of slavery", at least that is what author and "historian" Clint Smith argues. You see, Smith believes that America has long lied about the history of slavery, meaning that most Americans have never been taught the "truth" about slavery. By the "truth," Smith means the abolitionist positions on the institution before the War. This would be laughable if it wasn't so stupid. No one has ever read "Uncle Tom's Cabin", or seen the picture of "Whipped Peter", or heard that John Brown was a hero. Nope. They only get the proslavery arguments and nothing else. But Smith unknowingly admits what this war is really about: power. It's always been so. https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/support

Welcome back to Don't Alert the Stans! The Season 7 finale begins with a heartfelt tribute to author, feminist and professor bell hooks who passed away last week. Long a healing balm for both Eden and Sope, they both take some time to share their individual experiences with hooks' work and how its impacted their lives (00:08:31). Next up is the trialling of a potential new segment which will focus on books/articles that the boys are reading. Sope highlights Questlove's recent interview with GQ Magazine centring on his directorial debut with the ‘Summer Of Soul' documentary. Looking at how its political backdrop mirrors the current state of Black America (00:49:04). Finally kicking off the news agenda is Mariah Carey who has revealed she has no plans to ever tour again. Bringing forth a discussion about whether acts of her calibre and financial capital even need to tour anymore (01:03:16). Following the success of Aaliyah's catalogue finally making its way to streaming services, Blackground Records are now rolling out a posthumous 4th studio album. The project's first single ‘Poison' featuring The Weeknd has received extremely negative reviews from fans for being poorly mixed (01:16:50). Closing out the episode is another new segment which informally taken place a number of times but is now starting to take formal shape; the deep dive. Just as the boys have carried out comprehensive analysis on the career trajectories of Ciara, Chris Brown, Drake and J. Cole, this week Alicia Keys is in the hot seat. Spurred by the news of Alicia Keys missing the top 40 on the Billboard 200 for the first time ever with her latest album ‘KEYS', Sope and Eden consider the dramatic changes in the way her public and musical persona is perceived in 2021 compared to her glory years in the early 2000s and 2010s (01:27:26). Last week Humboldt was featured prominently in a lengthy article by GQ Magazine — for something other than weed, if you can believe it! The piece, “The Last Glimpses of California's Vanishing Hippie Utopias,” takes the reader on a tour of some of the aging and forgotten communes manifested by the generation of idealists associated with what we know nowadays as the back to the land movement. These days Richard Evans makes his home in the metropolis of Eureka, but back in the early ‘70s he and his cohorts fled the Bay Area for a more idyllic communal existence on a property in far-flung Southern Humboldt. On this week's episode of Humboldt Holding Up — LoCO's always-idealistic podcast — Evans shares with us his recollections of his back-to-the-lander days.

Becoming Better by Shifting Your Mindset and Taking Control of Your Life with Bricia Lopez Growing up, our parents tell us what to do and what not to do. Thus, even as we grow into our unique selves, we still feel restricted in doing and pursuing what we want. We base our decisions as adults on the things we learned and heard growing up. But becoming better  does not happen this way. You should shift your mindset and start taking control of your life. That's when freedom, contentment, and fulfillment come in. In this episode, Bricia Lopez talks about the most valuable lessons she learned from motherhood and running a family business. She shares the experience of being pregnant and giving birth during the pandemic, along with navigating the new normal as an entrepreneur. Bricia also lets us take a peek at what it's like working with her family in their business. She discusses how understanding you're in control is crucial in decision-making and becoming better as a person. If you're stuck in a mindset that keeps you from moving forward, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how motherhood pushed Bricia to become a better person. Find out what generational wealth is and what it does for families. Learn how resilience pushes you to move forward no matter the adversities. Resources Connect with Bricia: Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn | Facebook. Episode Highlights How Bricia Handled the Pandemic She was 20 weeks pregnant in March last year and gave birth in July. The experience of carrying her baby through the pandemic was grounding for Bricia. The pandemic put things into perspective. At the end of the day, it's all about taking care of her children. Because she was high-risk, she had to stay home and let her team manage her restaurant. Becoming Better for Her Children For Bricia, giving birth to a girl was a completely different experience from giving birth to a boy. After she gave birth to her baby girl, felt the urge of becoming better. She took care of her body during the first few weeks after her pregnancy and dropped her bad habits. Bricia admits that she did not take care of her body after giving birth to her firstborn. This time around, becoming better at this aspect of motherhood was her priority. Being pregnant during the pandemic made it easier for Bricia to slow down. Navigating the New Normal Bricia is now back to the grind 100%. She has someone who helps take care of her daughter. Despite being busy again, she feels at peace because she loves what she does. She doesn't feel guilty leaving her daughter behind because she got to spend so much time with her one-on-one. With the economy opening up, it feels like the roaring 20s again for businesses. Guelaguetza Restaurant Their website is now called ilovemole.com. It's easier to remember than the previous guelaguetza.com. The restaurant is in Koreatown in Los Angeles. They specialize in Oaxacan cooking. Building Generational Wealth Bricia loves working with her family. She runs the family business with her brother and sister. They're building something that will last for the next generation. They are also becoming better at handling their finances than their parents. For Bricia, generational wealth allows you to be in control of your time. As a result, you can be more creative. You are also more at peace and present. By building generational wealth, she is allowing her children to explore what they want without having to worry about money. Mental Graduation We are continuously graduate mentally to another state of mind. We go through mental high school and mental college. Then, we get to the place where we open doors to new dimensions of financial knowledge. Becoming better means you have to keep learning. It's important to remember that age doesn't define your capacity to learn new things. Taking Chances Bricia didn't realize how big of a hold her parents had on her life until they retired. She always wanted to be a graphic designer, but her father was against it. Bricia wished she didn't listen and just went for it. She realized she could do anything when her parents retired and moved away. She and her siblings bought the restaurant from their parents and took over. Making a decision and following through it is the hardest skill to learn and lean on. No one has control of your life but you. Understanding this will make you realize that you can do anything you want. How Resilience Impacted Bricia's Decision-Making Adversities will always happen in life and business; it's the way the world works. You can decide to stop and backtrack, or you can stop, learn, and move forward. Once you understand why something happened, you'll realize it's not that big of a deal and develop a new perspective. Opportunities come when you're not scared. You keep becoming better as you face and deal with issues and adversities. Becoming better at self-compassion is one of the hardest things to learn in life. Yet, it's one of the most useful tools you can have. The Most Important Value Bricia Wants Her Children to Have For Bricia, it's confidence. If you're innately confident, you can make anything happen no matter what the world tells you. Innate confidence is different from given confidence or fake confidence that makes a person delusional. Instead of giving her son fake confidence, she builds his self-esteem by letting him fail, explore, and do things for himself. How Bricia Feels Radically Love Working in the hospitality industry, her life revolves around serving people. And so, Bricia feels radically loved when people listen to her and give their time, compassion, and energy without taking. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [06:14] “I just need to become a better woman. I need to become even a better version of me for [my daughter].” [15:16] “Generational wealth means having more control of your time, without the stress of other things.” [18:51] “No one's too old to learn anything.” [22:37] “Getting used to the fact that making a decision and following through that decision is probably the hardest skill to learn and lean on.” [29:27] “[Confidence is] something that you have to innately understand. They have to fail and then learn that they can do it themselves.” About Bricia Bricia Lopez is a restaurant owner, entrepreneur, and best-selling author. She is the co-owner of an Oaxacan restaurant, Guelaguetza. Additionally, Bricia is a co-founder of Mole and More, together with her siblings. They sell proprietary cocktail mix, I Love Micheladas, and mole paste. Beyond this, Bricia is also the co-founder and co-host of the Super Mamás Podcast. As one of the foremost proponents of Oaxacan culture and cuisine in the United States, Bricia is the author of the best-selling cookbook, Oaxaca. Have you ever felt like you, personally, just weren't enough—no matter how hard you try? Turns out you are! And me, too! That was a discovery I made in the year after my daughter Teal's death in 2012. I start this show with a related essay from my book Surrendering to Joy called What If You Really Were Enough? My guest in the main part is the wonderful Dr. Wallace J Nichols—a marine biologist and author of the very cool book, Blue Mind; The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier… His premise is simple—and one I've always suspected deep in my gut. Water just makes us… better! And here's the science that proves it. I learned: Why water is a powerful healer for anxiety and grief The irresistible pull towards water and what It's all about Why a shot of cold water can be so beneficial What is ‘red mind' and how ‘blue mind' counteracts it What's better—oceanic or fresh water? What is ‘soft fascination'? The surprising power of virtual water! Honestly, this may be one of my favorite episodes… why? Cause I'm a water girl. Here's a picture of me after my spontaneous dip in San Francisco Bay on a hot day last summer.  RESOURCES Surrendering to Joy Natori CODE for 15% discount: BUSY Blue Mind book Ocean Sounds video on YouTube MORE ABOUT DR. A conversation on the ancient wisdom of Christian forgiveness, between Yale psychologist Laurie Santos (host, The Happiness Lab) and Miroslav Volf. Recently appearing on The Happiness Lab, Miroslav and Laurie discuss his older brother's tragic death as a child and his family's response to forgive. Miroslav reflects on the formative impact of these events. He contrasts forgiveness as an obligation with forgiveness as a gift that frees one from captivity to the past and opens up possibilities for the future. Forgiveness, for him, is more than an event but a practice cultivated throughout life, offering a way of recognizing the sacred and holy in the other.Reposted with permission from The Happiness Lab. Last week all hell broke loose when YouTuber, Tasha K revealed that "relationship guru" Derrick Jaxn had been cheating on his wife (and continues to cheat on her).  We saw Derrick and his wife go live on social media with her looking like an unwilling participant. There has been a lot of talk about the "high value" man and what he really wants in a woman, with young ladies humiliating themselves calling into Kevin Samuel's show for him to berate them and tear up the little self-esteem that they have.  While Black men tried to tear down Russell Wilson and called him a SIMP for his interview in GQ Magazine and saying what scares him the most in life is losing his wife, Ciara.  On this episode of Baldwin Was Right, mental health therapist, John Granger, II, and Dr. Carey Yazeed are discussing the misconceptions of the high-value man, going to therapy, and what a healthy relationship really looks like.
