Eli McCann, attorney and writer, went viral on TikTok for his heartfelt videos celebrating his beloved teacher, Mrs. Yates, and his story sends Kate down memory lane to her own fifth grade classroom in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where a small but mighty teacher named Helena Graham delivered one unforgettable piece of advice that changed the course of her life. This episode is a love letter to the teachers who saw something in us, said the hard things when no one else would, and shaped us in ways we are still discovering decades later. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes Chris Navalta, author of Inspiring Stories of Soccer Greats, a powerful middle grade book timed perfectly for the World Cup. Chris, a lifelong sports fan and former sportswriter, shares how soccer's global reach and beautiful simplicity—just a ball and some space—make it the perfect backdrop for stories of perseverance, inequality, and hope. Chris explains that his goal wasn't just to spotlight stars like Lionel Messi, Alex Morgan, Christian Pulisic, and Vini Jr., but to reveal the real human struggles behind their success. Listeners hear about Messi's growth hormone deficiency and how FC Barcelona's support changed his life, Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala's fight against family expectations, and even David Clark, a blind striker who became England's greatest goal scorer and helped shape blind soccer worldwide. Chris and Jed talk about soccer as a unifying force capable of stopping wars, inspiring underdogs like Leicester City's miracle Premier League win, and offering kids everywhere a dream to chase. They also explore how families can use the book to spark conversations about resilience, opportunity, and asking, "Can I play this game too?"—no matter a child's circumstances. In the final segment, Jed chats with David John Preece, creator of the Mister Higgins picture book series. Inspired by his rescue dog, David's books gently invite families into conversations about kindness, inclusion, and grief, especially in Mister Higgins Comforts a Family, where Mister Higgins helps his family cope with the loss of their beloved Thelma.
From The Heart, Inspiring Stories told by Inspiring WomenAddiction impacted both of their lives in completely different ways… but healing brought them back together.

About the Episode What if the most powerful tool for fighting social isolation wasn't a program, a PowerPoint, or a policy — but a meal shared around a kitchen table? In this episode of Do Local Good, host Yawa Idi sits down with Kathryn Way from Alberta Parenting for the Future Association (APFA) to explore how cultural cooking is breaking down barriers and building belonging in the Tri-region. Together, they unpack how a kitchen and the simple act of sharing a meal — can become a catalyst for community connection, mental health, and youth empowerment. The conversation digs into APFA's “Stir It Up” cultural cooking program, which uses food as a vehicle for youth development, cross-cultural connection, and mental health skill-building. From learning patience while waiting for dough to rise, to standing beside someone from a completely different background and laughing about cake pops, the kitchen becomes a place where young people discover confidence, accountability, and a genuine sense of purpose. The discussion also explores how the program reaches Indigenous youth, newcomer families, and kids with diverse needs, weaving in Elders, the Seven Sacred Teachings, and a community fridge that gives youth a sense of contribution. In a region where rural isolation is real and resources are stretched, APFA is showing that something as simple as a recipe can spark massive change. This episode invites listeners to reconsider what youth programming can look like when it starts with belonging rather than curriculum — and asks: What becomes possible when we give young people a seat at the table? Featured Programs and Resources Alberta Parenting for the Future Association (APFA) Alberta Parenting for the Future Association (APFA) has been strengthening family connections in the Tri-Municipal Area for 30 years. Based at the Family Connection Centre in Stony Plain and serving Spruce Grove, Parkland County, As a Provincial Family Resource Network and the Hub for the Tri-Region, APFA offers free programs for children and families from birth to age 24 — including parent workshops, infant and early childhood programs, support groups, and child and youth programs. Learn More → https://www.apfa.ca/ Stir It Up — Youth Mental Health Cooking Program Stir It Up is APFA's youth mental health cooking program for grades 6–12, following the Healthy Together evidence-based model and drawing on the wisdom of Community Kitchens as natural gathering spaces. Each week, youth participate in an activity of their choice, a group discussion, and a food component — building protective factors for youth and their families as the kitchen becomes a space where young people develop confidence, accountability, patience, and genuine connections with peers from diverse backgrounds. The learning that happens together around food translates directly into basic life skills that support youth in going from surviving to thriving. The design of the program supports newcomer youth, Indigenous youth and those with disabilities. Learn More → https://www.apfa.ca/ Food Rescue Program Every Wednesday, APFA's Food Rescue Program provides free food to families across Parkland County, Stony Plain, and Spruce Grove — no registration required, open to anyone. Food is sourced from the local food bank and distributed at the Family Connection Centre. The program is also woven into the Stir It Up cooking series, where youth prepare and package meals for the community fridge, connecting them directly to the real impact of their work. Volunteers are always welcome to help with food rescue days and packaging. This week on Walk and Roll Live – Disability Stories, Addie and I are joined by past guests Bobby Rohan and Robert Soto as we wrap up our weekend at the Abilities Expo in Long Beach. We spent two full days exploring the new venue, meeting innovators, reconnecting with friends in the disability community, and discovering some exciting new developments in accessibility and adaptive living. Our goal on day one was simple — cover the entire floor, meet as many people as possible, and learn what's new in the world of disability inclusion. Along the way we found some incredible stories, including a young creator developing a comic book series featuring superheroes inspired by real people with disabilities. We also explored the latest in adaptive equipment, from everyday mobility devices to rugged off-road wheelchairs designed for outdoor adventures. This year we noticed more adaptive clothing companies, interactive experiences like adaptive sports and a climbing wall, and even a fashion show highlighting inclusive design. The new ownership of the Expo appears to be making big improvements, bringing in influencers from the disability community, hosting live stage interviews, and creating a more engaging experience overall. On this week's episode of Asking for a Friend, Michele sits down with Cristina Fontana, registered nurse, health coach, living kidney donor, and author of Metamorphosis: The Gift of a Life Lived Twice.Cristina's journey began with profound loss. When she was just nine years old, her father was diagnosed with kidney cancer—a moment that quietly planted the seed for a future she never imagined. Years later, after building a career in healthcare and raising a family, Cristina made the extraordinary decision to donate one of her kidneys to a complete stranger. In this powerful conversation, Cristina shares the deeply personal story behind that decision, what the donation process actually looks like, and how meeting the young man who received her kidney became one of the most meaningful moments of her life. But this episode goes far beyond organ donation.Cristina also opens up about navigating grief after losing her father at a young age, how loss shaped her perspective on time and purpose, and why she believes we all have the ability to transform hardship into something meaningful.Today, she continues that mission through her work as a health coach, author, and advocate for living kidney donation—while also climbing mountains around the world with other kidney donors to raise awareness and inspire others. This conversation is about resilience, service, and the powerful reminder that even the most difficult chapters of our lives can lead to extraordinary impact.Where to find Cristina Fontana and her book Metamorphosis:https://cristinafontanawellness.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/criselba.wellness/Amazon: https://amzn.to/4sfociU_________________________________________If you're doing “all the right things” and still feel stuck, adding a layer of support may be an option. The White Mountains have a special talent for making strong hikers question their life choices, and their mileage math. In this episode, I'm joined by Eli Burakian and Justin Chapman, the brains behind Northeast Trail Adventures, to break down what makes the Northeast so rugged, so beloved, and so different from anywhere else.Sign up for the retreat: https://northeasttrailadventures.com/We dig into Moosilauke as the first true alpine-style summit for northbound AT hikers, the old-school trail design philosophy (straight up, minimal mercy), and the culture shift where vert matters more than pace. Then we get into the wild story of the Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard, a last-person-standing race that went a jaw-dropping 90 hours, and somehow turned race directing into an ultra of its own. After that, we talk about something more important than suffering, community. I'm officially joining Northeast Trail Adventures as a leader for their White Mountains running and hiking retreat (June 5 weekend at Hub North), a low-pressure, all-abilities weekend built around moving efficiently in the mountains, learning from experienced leaders, and hanging out like normal humans at night with meals, stories, and whatever game ends friendships. If you want an entry point to the Whites that's fun, supportive, and not gatekeep-y, this is it. Retreat spots are limited, and Free Outside listeners can use FREE OUTSIDE for $100 off.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Northeast Hiking Experience06:41 Personal Connections to the White Mountains11:48 Launching Northeast Trail Adventures21:45 The Unique Vertical Backyard Race32:26 Reflections on the Race and Future Plans34:03 Community Building in the Whites39:18 Retreat Structure and Activities55:43 Inspiring Stories and Personal Experiences01:04:35 Future Events and OpportunitiesFind Northeasttrailadventures.com on social media https://www.instagram.com/northeasttrailadventuresSupport our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure
