Speaking at the opening of the Budget Session, he acknowledged the emotional and political significance of statehood to the people of J&K and emphasized ongoing efforts to engage stakeholders. Sinha stated that the government is working to address the people's desires while ensuring peace, stability, and progress. His remarks come as political activity in J&K intensifies, with opposition parties challenging the government on sensitive issues like Article 370.Now, from news in the South, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin led an all-party meeting that unanimously rejected the upcoming Parliamentary constituency delimitation process, set for 2026. The resolution passed in Chennai argued that the process would weaken Tamil Nadu and threaten India's federal structure. It claimed that basing the delimitation solely on the upcoming census population data would harm the political representation of Tamil Nadu and other South Indian states, especially those with successful population control measures. In another news making headline, Kannada film actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle 14.2 kg of gold worth ₹12.56 crore. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted a raid at her residence, recovering jewellery valued at ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash. Rao, 33, is the stepdaughter of a senior Karnataka IPS officer and was intercepted after returning from Dubai, a frequent destination for her trips. In global headlines, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed readiness to sign a minerals deal with the United States, despite not finalizing it during his visit to Washington. Zelenskyy acknowledged the challenges of his meeting with US President Donald Trump but reaffirmed Ukraine's openness to constructive dialogue. He emphasized that Ukraine's position needs to be heard. The minerals deal was seen as a step towards strengthening security ties between the two nations. However, tensions over peace talks with Russia have led to growing frustrations between the US and Ukraine.New 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 20% tariff hike on Chinese goods have sparked trade tensions between the US and its top three trading partners. Canada quickly retaliated, announcing tariffs on $20.7bn worth of US goods, with further measures planned if Trump's tariffs remain. China also imposed additional 10%-15% tariffs on US imports, alongside export restrictions on US entities, escalating the trade conflict. These tariffs came into effect immediately, adding strain to global trade. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

Lori Allen and Ajantha Subramanian continue their second series on Violent Majorities. Their previous episode featured Peter Beinart on Zionism as long-distance ethnonationalism; here they speak with Subir Sinha, who teaches at SOAS University of London, comments on Indian and European media, and is a member of a commission of inquiry exploring the 2022 unrest between Hindus and Muslims in Leicester, UK. The catalysts he identifies for the rise of Hindu nationalism (Hindutva) include the emergence of new middle classes after economic liberalization, the rise of Islamophobia after 9/11, the 2008 crisis in capitalism, and the spread of new communications technologies. The trio discuss the growth of Hindutva in the US and UK since the 1990s and its further consolidation. Social media has been key to Modi's brand of authoritarian populism, with simultaneous messaging across national borders producing a globally dispersed audience for Hindutva. Particularly useful to transnational political mobilizations has been the manufacture of wounded Hindu sentiments: a claim to victimhood that draws on the legitimizing language of religious minority rights in the US and UK. They also note more hopeful signs: Dalit and other oppressed caste politics have begun to strengthen in the diaspora; the contradictions between lived Hinduism and Hindutva have become clearer; there are some demographic and structural barriers to Hindutva's further growth in the UK and US. Subir's Recallable Book is Kunal Purohit's H-Pop:The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars (Harper Collins India, 2023), which looks at the proliferation of Hindutva Pop, a genre of music that is made to go viral and whip up mob violence against religious minorities. It espouses principles of Hindu unity and aims to transform India into a Hindu supremacist nation-state. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), or World Hindu Organization, is a branch of the Sangh Parivar. Ex Citibanker, ex VP Strategy Ogilvy, ex marketing chief Zee Telefilms, ex head of strategy SE Asia for Publicis, ex Managing Partner BBH, ex MD and Vice Chairman, McCann WordGroup. In 2020, I asked Partha to connect me to a few people for my podcast. He connected me to one of India's top directors, Shoojit Sircar. The podcast with Shoojit turned into ongoing chat over the next two years. When Shoojit first talked about making a movie on me, I thought this was the biggest prank Partha had played on me. It was the connection from him that set the ball rolling for the movie, I Want To Talk. I was very excited that Partha and his wife Chaitali were the first to see the movie outside of the core group. In this podcast, Partha, a brilliant mind who guided the conversation so effortlessly into the depth of the heart, but never making it too serious. Thank you Partha for being you, always. Here are some key insights from this week's show: Life is never over till it is over. “I Want to Talk” is a story of crossing one hurdle at a time. You play differently when you know you are going to win the game. The screen Arjun had the advantage of knowing that he will make it in the end. Sometimes bad ideas can trigger amazing ideas. Talking comes with responsibility. Words once spoken, are out there forever. If we give up, we will never know what life can bring for us. The COVID-19 pandemic awakened the nation – and the world – to the fact that small-house eldercare homes were substantially safer places to deliver long-term care compared with traditional nursing homes. And while it's now been almost five years since the onset of the pandemic, Canadian health policy makers such as Samir Sinha, MD, continue to raise awareness of the need for the proliferation of models such as Green House homes. As it happens, his appearance on this week's episode coincides with his new report, titled “There's No Place Like Home: Why Canada Must Prioritize Small Care Home Models in its Provision of Long-Term Care,” published by his Toronto Metropolitan University's National Institute on Ageing, where he is director of health policy research. Susan Ryan sits down with Dr. Sinha to discuss his work, the new report, and why he wants Canada to prioritize small care home models in the future delivery of long-term care services. Dr. Sinha, who is also a geriatrician and clinician scientist at Sinai Health System and the University Health Network in Toronto, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, has lots to say about eldercare, his desire to help and to work with vulnerable populations.  Listen to the episode to find out why he believes importance of adequate staffing and the role of universal direct care and its relationship to better resident-centered care. As the holiday season gets underway, those of us who have so much to be thankful for should think about—and reach out to help—those who are less fortunate. So as I did last year, I'm using my Thanksgiving podcast episode to shine the spotlight on a lawyer who has devoted their entire career to working in the public interest.Amol Sinha is a nationally recognized civil-rights leader who has dedicated his career to advancing racial justice, holding institutions accountable, promoting and defending rights and liberties, and spearheading impactful work to protect democracy. Since 2017, he has served as executive director of the ACLU of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ)—which has doubled in size, and tripled in terms of its budget, under his leadership. In our conversation, Amol and I discussed his long career in public-interest law, including his past positions at the Innocence Project and the New York Civil Liberties Union; what he's most proud of during his time at the ACLU-NJ, including groundbreaking decarceration efforts; his response to critics claiming that the ACLU has abandoned its commitment to free speech in favor of “woke” causes; and, in a very timely discussion in light of the recent election, what he and his ACLU colleagues across the country are focusing on as Donald Trump returns to the White House. For the past seven years, Amol has been working in my home state of New Jersey. As someone who grew up in and currently lives in the Garden State, I was especially interested in hearing about what he's been up to—and I hope you will be as well.Show Notes:* Amol Sinha bio, ACLU of New Jersey* Our Roadmap to Protecting Democracy and Holding Trump Accountable, by Amol Sinha for the ACLU-NJPrefer reading to listening? So I was working full time as a primary care outaptient physician and I was coaching my clients on my admin half day and weekends. I realized that what was burning me out was medicine post-pandemic. I just couldn't do it anymore and it took me a while to recognize why I was feeling the way I was feeling. So I took some time to self-reflect. Actually a year ago in August I took 4 weeks off of unpaid leave becasue I was just fed up. I needed some space and some time to figure out how I am going to move forward in everything that I love. I love clinical medicine. I love building that relationship with my patients, but then there's all of the other BS. Here in the United States the system is broken - period. We can make small changes here and there but in the end I decided that being a full time physician and full time coach wasn't possible."This episode is with Dr. Flora Sinha, who is a primary care physician, a physician coach, and a podcast host.In this episode we talk about:- Her experience with secondary infertility- How/when she decided to stop fertility treatments- Happiness with her current family size- How to respond to invasive/inappropriate questions about your personal life, particularly your family size- Her experience with burnout- Taking 4 weeks of unpaid leave to figure out how she wanted to move forward- Starting her coaching business- Her podcast - The Beyond Podcast- Her decision to share her life publicly on social media and why Connect with Moms of Medicine:- Instagram @moms_of_medicine- Momsofmedicine@gmail.comConnect with Dr. Flora Sinha:- Instagram @drflorasinha- Instagram @the.beyondpodcast- the beyond podcast on apple, spotify, and youtube

Book Club #112 - One Sinha Lifetime - Richard chats to doctor turned comedian and quizzer, Paul Sinha about his fantastic and heart-felt book about family, love, failure, success and getting through difficult times with positivity. They discuss how he never actually came out to his parents but their very human reaction to the news, the stereotypes of the quiz world and how they maybe miss something important, the desire to compete and win even if you're no good at sport, the vagaries of the stand-up scene and how the same material can storm or die in the same night, turning a gay man straight, why Michael Palin has a better attitude than John Cleese and the Mastermind records of these two complete losers.Or buy the books here (quickly) -https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/one-sinha-lifetime-a-bengali-boy-s-search-for-the-meaning-of-life-paul-sinha/7546634?ean=9781529908534See RHLSTP recorded live - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp.
