After Jessie Williams lost her first-born son in 2006, she experienced post traumatic growth thanks to her community. Her passion with ‘GroundSwell' keeps her up at night and she invites everyone to be a part of the collective change around death and dying in Australia. The Groundswell Project works with individuals, organisations and communities to improve how people in Australia die, care and grieve. This was a beautiful, important and at times, confronting conversation. Personally, it challenged me on a range of levels and made me reflect deeply. Just letting you know (respectfully), that some people might struggle with aspects of Jessie's story, while many will find it beautiful, enlightening and fascinating. And for some, it will be both.

The way you feel about death often depends on your dominant culture. In this episode, I chat to Holly Rankin Smith, who works at the Groundswell Project, an organisation that aims to increase death literacy in Australia. Ironically, I felt so alive after this conversation, where we talk about how Australians deal with death, what we can learn from other cultures, and how we can learn to talk more openly about the only certainty in life.

It’s likely that you, or someone you know has experienced grief and loss. Death, illness and challenging times are a part of life, but many of us are not equipped to communicate skilfully with others at these times, particularly in the workplace. Let’s face it, having conversations about death, tragedy, illness and challenging times are not easy or comfortable, but at some point, we’ll all face a situation when we’re going to need to do so. In this extract from a recent Great Managers MasterClass, we’re going to show you how to get more comfortable ‘discussing the undiscussables’ and allow you to Build a Compassionate Workplace! We’ll interview Groundswell Project Executive Director Jessie Williams. The Groundswell Project was established 5 years ago to enable social and cultural change when it comes to death and dying in Australia. Their aim is to promote resilience and wellbeing in response to end-of-life issues and to encourage people to build their death literacy. Their goal is to make it easier for people to talk with someone who has experienced a loss and to help kindness to show its face. Stand Out Life

I’m not going to lie, today’s episode is a heavy conversation; a much needed conversation about grief and loss, 10/10 of us will die - it’s inevitable, we’ll experience the passing of someone that we love and have to navigate our response to grief and loss inside the communities that we live. Jess’s experience with grief, and the way she beautifully, rawly and openly shares her story is as complex as grief itself. It’s heart-wrenching, joy-filled, tear-jerking with the critical punctuation of swear words required to share such an experience. After losing her first born son, Monty, in 2006, Jess Williams experienced post traumatic growth thanks to her community. Her passion with the GroundSwell Project, and the Compassion Community where she is pulled to talk about death and grief in workplaces, keeps her up at night; and she invites everyone to be a part of the collective change around death and dying in Australia Whilst there are some components of this conversation that are tough to hear it is a truly remarkable conversation that ended with some long hugs between Jess and I. And that’s the power of creating connections and safe spaces to talk about grief and death. I would encourage you to lean into these conversations, to build your community around you, and to know that there are people sharing in these stories too. Grab your tissues, be kind to yourself, and carve out the space to soak up this life-affirming conversation with Jess Williams.
