In recent years El Paso, Buffalo, Charleston, and Overland Park have joined the list of cities where right wing extremists have committed mass killings. Racial hate and fascism are not new. From slavery, into the civil war, Jim Crow, the civil rights era, onto the Oklahoma City bombing, Charlottesville and so on, right wing extremists have posed a threat to US society. But, what happens when a violent far right extremist decides to turn their back on the movement? Many of these people engage with Life after Hate an organization dedicated to helping people break free from hate and live compassionate lives. In this episode I speak with the CEO and Executive Director of Life After Hate Patrick Riccards. We discuss the radicalization process, the way hate groups grow, and the path to, and challenges faced on the road to redemption. If you are seeking to exit an extremist group contact Life after Hate online at lifeafterhate.org or call/text 612-888-EXIT (3948).

We cover whether prevention of violent extremism programs are well equipped for the potential Trump presidency and the rise of far-right domestic terrorism. I also cover some of the challenges social workers face in establishing their expertise in this field. In today's podcast, come along for a special conversation between the community and Tony McAleer, a former white supremacist and co-founder of anti-hate group Life After Hate, and filmmaker Peter Hutchison. The pair recently teamed up to record a documentary “The Cure for Hate” which details McAleer's journey to Auschwitz to bear witness to the horrors of the Holocaust — and to atone for the hatred he'd once espoused and spread.
Host Reed Galen is joined by Homeland and National Security Expert, Elizabeth Neumann. They discuss the exponential increase in domestic terrorism (why it increased and how it should effectively be addressed), why the way we communicate is so key to reducing political polarity, and what strategies offer the best chance of success when it comes to de-radicalization. If you'd like to keep up with Elizabeth be sure to follow her on Twitter (@NeuSummits) and check out her work at Moonshot (moonshotteam.com). Also, here are some of the intervention resources Elizabeth referred to in the episode: Life After Hate, Parents for Peace, ADL's Extreme Measures Toolkit. Filmmaker Peter Hutchinson's latest documentary THE CURE FOR HATE: BEARING WITNESS TO AUSCHWITZ follows Tony McAleer, a former Neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier. After spent 15 years in the white supremacist and neo-Nazi movement, starting as a skinhead before rising in the ranks into leadership, McAleer shed past life to become a founding member of the anti-hate activist group Life After Hate. positions. (the film) THE CURE FOR HATE: BEARING WITNESS TO AUSCHWITZ documents Tony's profoundly personal journey of atonement to Auschwitz/Birkenau - exploring the conditions that allowed for the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe; shedding a unique light upon how men get into, and out of, violent extremist groups; and serving as a cautionary tale for our time that underscores the dangers in allowing hate to be left unchecked. Aware and deeply ashamed of the lineage of hate he'd once promoted, Tony had long-contemplated traveling to Auschwitz in the spirit of tshuvah - to bear witness to the inconceivable ravages of the Holocaust, and deepen his personal work against the rise of extremist politics. Director Peter Hutchinson (Requiem of the American Dream) and Subject Tony McAleer join us for a conversation on the road that brought them together, the size and scope of the Auschwitz industrial killing operation, and getting to know each other. Facebook is asking users to rat out their right-wing uncles, sending prompts to certain accounts warning that somebody they know might be flirting with an "extremist" ideology. As part a new effort against so-called "extremism," the platform has partnered with Life After Hate, a NGO strictly focused on right-wing radicals, which received a $750,000 grant from the DHS last year to "disrupt domestic terrorism." Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has died at the age of 88. Kyle and Will summarize his legacy of militarism and deception, exemplified by his indispensable role in the disastrous 2003 invasion of Iraq. My guest today is Tony McAleer (@mcaleer), the author of the book, The Cure For Hate: A Former White Supremacist's Journey From Violent Extremism To Radical Compassion. Tony spent 15 years in white supremacist and neo-nazi movements before eventually disengaging and co-founding the nonprofit organization, Life After Hate, which helps people leave hate groups. I wanted to have Tony on the show to share his own story and insights on why people join extremist organisations, what keeps them in, and why and how they leave. But I also wanted to hear Tony's thoughts on violent extremism in the US today, especially in the wake of the Capitol riot and the renewed focus on far-right violent extremist organisations in particular. Is what we are seeing today something new? What can we do about it? And what are we getting wrong? Civil Rights Filmmaker Takes on Voter Suppression in “After Selma” (0:29)Guest: Loki Mulholland, Emmy-winning Documentary Filmmaker of “After Selma,” Executive Director of The Joan Trumpauer Mulholland FoundationVoting is a right of citizenship in the United States – one it's easy for many of us to take for granted. But it took a series of constitutional amendments to extend voting rights to all Americans. First was the 15th Amendment passed after the Civil War, giving black men the vote. It wasn't until 1920 that women got the vote – we're coming up on the 100th anniversary of that. But racial discrimination in the South kept many black men and women from voting until the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. And so today, it looks like it's working. But a new documentary about voter suppression in America today called “After Selma” shows that it's not. Scientists Lured Fish Back to Dying Coral Reefs with Loudspeakers (21:58)Guest: Tim Gordon, Marine Biologist, PhD Student, University of ExeterThe world's coral reefs are in dire straits. Extreme heat killed off half the Great Barrier Reef in 2016 and 2017. Those damaged areas of coral became like a ghost town. But if fish could be drawn back to the reef, their very presence could trigger other parts of the coral ecosystem to come back, too. Marine biologist Tim Gordon has struck on an ingenious strategy to lure fish to patches of dead coral – sound. The Power of Black Twitter (33:29)Guest: Meredith Clark, Assistant Professor of Media Studies, University of VirginiaThere's a subset of Twitter that's come to be known in recent years as “Black Twitter.” University of Virginia media studies professor Meredith Clark is writing a book about what it is and why it matters. A White Supremacist's Journey Out of Hate (50:36)Guest: Tony McAleer, Author, “The Cure for Hate: A Former White Supremacist's Journey from Violent Extremism to Radical Compassion”Major cities in the US have seen a surge in hate crimes targeting Jews in recent months, including a stabbing in the home of a rabbi in New York during Hanukkah, in which five people were killed. The FBI says violence by white-supremacist extremists is the primary domestic terror threat in the US.And so Tony McAleer's story is worth considering. As a young man, he joined a gang of white supremacists, shaved his head, spewed anti-immigrant rhetoric and attacked minorities, publicly denied the Holocaust, and created an automated phone messaging system to spread his hate more widely - before the internet made it even easier. Today Tony McAleer has left that hate behind and is co-founder of a nonprofit called “Life After Hate” which helps people leave extremist groups. His new memoir is called, “The Cure for Hate.” Rural Communities Face Growing Health Care Disparities as Hospitals Continue to Close (1:28:07)Guest: Simon F. Haeder, Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Pennsylvania State UniversityRural America is facing a healthcare crisis. Since 2010, more than 100 rural hospitals have closed, which means long drives or expensive ambulance rides in an emergency for people living in those areas. But hospital closures are only the start of the problem for rural communities. Cost-cutting measures by insurance companies are also making it harder for people to see a doctor.

Angela King is the program director of Life After Hate, a non-profit organization that helps people extricate themselves from hate groups and turn their lives around. Angela shares her deeply personal experience of being raised by extremely strict and racist parents, being bullied in junior high and eventually bullying others in an effort to survive. Angela found herself desperate to connect and belong, struggling with confusing feelings about sexuality and identity, but her deep fear and anger led her to act out and join hate groups as a white supremacist. Her hate and violence eventually hit a rock bottom which landed her in prison, where she was forced to face her past and deepest failures. In her remarkable story, she shares how her time in prison and the incredible connection to her fellow inmates, led her to shatter her way of thinking and ultimately find love with a black woman. Angela's story is one of true inspiration where she was able to confront her racism and embrace the profound ability to change. Sam Harris speaks with Christian Picciolini about his experience as a neo-Nazi skinhead. They discuss how Christian got out of the movement, the limits of shame and forgiveness, the cult-like dynamics of white supremacy, the alt-Right, Russian support for white supremacy in the US, “fake news”, the significance of Charlottesville, the SPLC, and many other topics. Christian Picciolini became a white supremacist at the age of fourteen and went on to become the leader in the notorious Hammerskin Nation, one of the most violent hate groups in the world. After leaving the white power movement at twenty-two, he co-founded Life After Hate, a non-profit organization run by former extremists who are now dedicated to countering racism. He is a TEDx speaker and won an Emmy in 2016 for his role as director and executive producer of an anti-hate video campaign. He’s the author of White American Youth: My Descent in America’s Most Violent Hate Movement—And How I Got Out. Twitter: @cpicciolini
Christian Picciolini is a reformed racist and far-right extremist. He joins The Great Battlefield to tell us how he came to renounce his violent past and co-found Life After Hate & ExitUSA, and how he sees Donald Trump. He also discusses his new book, White American Youth. | Episode 111
Christian Picciolini is an Emmy Award-winning director and producer, a published author, a TEDx speaker, and a reformed extremist. He is the co-founder of Life After Hate, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding long-term solutions that counter racism and violent extremism. His latest book is titled White American Youth: My Descent into America's Most Violent Hate Movement – and How I Got Out. Some interesting insights from this episode: “Hatred is born of ignorance. Fear is its father and isolation is its mother.” Hear about the tactics hate groups use to recruit. The birth of his children was the impetus he needed to reprioritize his values and walk away from his former life. The first step in counseling others to leave the extremist movement is just listening. The people who join the extremist movement aren't generally swayed initially by their philosophy. Most are just searching for identity, community and purpose. Learn how the African American who forgave him for the physical violence he once caused was the trigger that gave him the courage to tell his story to the world. The way we can help is to show compassion to those who deserve it the least because those are the ones who need it the most. “Excellence is being the best human being that you can be.” Show Notes: Christian's book: White American Youth: My Descent into America's Most Violent Hate Movement – and How I Got Out https://www.amazon.com/White-American-Youth-Americas-Movement/dp/0316522902/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515354532&sr=8-1&keywords=christian+picciolini Christian's website: www.christianpicciolini.com Christian's one on one talk with Richard Spencer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U5zCbwFizA

My life after hate, how an ex-white supremacist changed his mind and heart with Arno Michaelis
The Get InPowered Podcast: Fostering Community through Shared Stories
"WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT PREVENTION, NOT JUST INTERVENTION. [...] THE PEOPLE IN POWER, WHO TYPICALLY END UP BEING WHITE MALES, TEND TO PRESCRIBE THE SOLUTIONS THEY THINK ARE BEST FOR PEOPLE. AND OFTENTIMES THOSE ARE ILL-ADVISED OR ILL-INFORMED AND CERTAINLY HAVE A CERTAIN AGENDA TO THEM." This week, we conclude our conversation with Christian Picciolini. A leader of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in his youth, Christian now works as an ambassador to help members of those communities transition out of hate and violence and return to the broader community. "I HAD TO BE VULNERABLE. […] WHEN I FOUND THE COURAGE TO DO THAT IS WHEN I REALLY DISCOVERED MY INNER POWER AND BEGAN TO SHARE MY STORY." The Get InPowered Podcast is about solutions and progress. In this episode, we focus on both. Christian identifies opportunities and actionable moments to stem the tides of hatred and violence and form a more understanding and effective global community. Through this episode, we can recognize our power as citizens and our collective humanity. "WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE THAT THINGS MUST BECOME EQUAL IF WE'RE GOING TO BE EQUAL AND FREE."
The Get InPowered Podcast: Fostering Community through Shared Stories
"If we can find a way to amplify the good things that people are passionate about, and provide opportunity, I suspect we'll see less extremism when people are more resilient." - Christian On the Get InPowered Podcast, we often talk about transformation and life-altering moments. Christian Picciolini is perhaps the prime example of such a transformation. A leader of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in his youth, Christian now works as an ambassador to help members of those communities transition out of hate and violence back into the broader community. Christian's perspective is unique and his passion for helping people overcome their hatred and defeat the core issues in their lives that lead them to these paths is overwhelming. How do you reach people who've turned against their fellow man? By listening first, then extending the three things people want most: Identity, community and a sense of purpose. "It made me feel powerful when I felt the most powerless, and I was willing at that time to put aside the racism just to belong, just to feel accepted and have a status of somebody who was not on the margins anymore." - Christian. "It's pretty simple. We tend to hate other people because we hate ourselves, we hate the situation we're in. And we project the pain that we feel onto other people so that we can rid ourselves of that pain." - Christian "Hatred is born of ignorance; fear is its father and isolation is its mother." - Christian
Joining us today is Arno Michaelis. Arno is now a peace activist, but spent the late 1980s and early 1990s deeply involved with racist skinhead organizations, and was lead singer of the hate-metal band Centurion, which sold 20,000 CDs by the mid-nineties and is still popular with racists today. Single parenthood, love for his daughter, and the forgiveness shown by people he once hated all helped to turn his life around, bringing me to embrace diversity and practice gratitude for all life. Today he's a speaker, author of the book My Life After Hate, and very fortunate to be able to share an ongoing process of character development working with Serve 2 Unite. Leveraging an online magazine, S2U engages students creatively with a global network of peacemakers and mentors in partnership with Against Violent Extremism, The Forgiveness Project, and Over My Shoulder Foundation. He's here to talk to us about his life, overcoming hatred, his peace work and how all this might relate to the Middle Way
