His murder made international headlines. The funeral descended into chaos. Conspiracy theories emerged immediately. And then...America forgot. But Rockwell's death had lasting impact: It shattered American neo-Nazism into the decentralized, leaderless cells we see today. Content moderation on social media has become one of the most daunting challenges of our time. Nowhere is the need for action more urgent than in the fight against terrorism and extremism. Yet despite mass content takedowns, account suspensions, and mounting pressure on technology companies to do more, hate thrives online. Safe Havens for Hate: The Challenge of Moderating Online Extremism (Princeton University Press, 2025) looks at how content moderation shapes the tactics of harmful content producers on a wide range of social media platforms.Drawing on a wealth of original data on more than a hundred militant and hate organizations around the world, Dr. Tamar Mitts shows how differing moderation standards across platforms create safe havens that allow these actors to organize, launch campaigns, and mobilize supporters. She reveals how the structure of the information environment shapes the cross-platform activity of extremist organizations and movements such as the Islamic State, the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, and QAnon, and highlights the need to consider the online ecosystem, not just individual platforms, when developing strategies to combat extremism.Taking readers to the frontlines of the digital battleground where dangerous organizations operate, Safe Havens for Hate sheds critical light on how governments and technology companies grapple with the tension between censorship and free speech when faced with violence, hate, and extremism. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Welcome to this explosive, investigative, fact-finding edition of Light ‘Em Up!We are incredibly pleased you decided to join us for one of our most comprehensive episodes to date!Tonight, we shine the antiseptic light of the truth at the intersection of hate speech and the violence that stems from it.While a great many people on the right strongly disagree with the truth, and struggle to accept it, the fact that the radical right is far more violent than the left is unwavering. Far-right attacks continue to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism. As a kid do you remember expressing the children's rhyme that says, “Sticks and stones can break your bones, but names can never hurt you?” While this is a nice thought — it isn‘t true. Words matter; words can hurt — words can lead to murder. In the Holy Bible, the Book of Ephesians (4:29) advises: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, which may benefit those who listen.” We need only look to the country of Rwanda in 1994 and the genocide that took place there. Collectively and pejoratively, the Tutsis were referred to as “cockroaches”.  Who acts neighborly or welcomes a cockroach into their home? Some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in 100 days. (The Tutsi and Hutu are ethnic groups established primarily in Rwanda and Burundi.)Evidence shows that the use of radio impacted and effected mobilization for violence in the Rwandan genocide. For more than a decade we've been exposed to the hate filled vitriol of Donald Trump. The words he willingly and intentionally chooses are often filled with hate.It is evident from his outward behavior; Donald Trump is not happy.  Barack Obama haunts him in thought, word, and past deed.Trump regularly refers to anyone who isn't in his “in-group” as “the enemy of the people” … “animals” and “scum”, you name it.His targets have been the press as a whole and individual journalists, immigrants, Blacks, LGBTQ+ people, Democrats, and whomever he chooses in the moment. His third-grade vocabulary has no filter. His political party does nothing to hold him to account for his vile, hate-filled rhetoric, even opting to echo and use it often.Rarely does he open his mouth without denigrating, dehumanizing, blaming, or accusing another person of doing something with no evidence. In this explosive episode we will highlight:—    As a case study we'll examine how hate speech can and does facilitate violence. From the genocide that took place in 1994 in Rwanda we offer a special feature in hearing from Henriette Mutegwaraba, survivor of the genocide and founder of the Million Lives Genocide relief fund.—    Multiple examples of the vile, hateful, and demagogic language that Donald Trump spews with regularity and comparing and contrasting his words with that of the Rwandan genocide. And much, much more!“The enemy of the people” are words Adolph Hitler used to describe the Jews before his “final solution” was put into effect which killed some 6 million people. This is the language of insecure, fascist, racist, dictatorial demagogues, and it is extremely dangerous. In his book entitled Behemoth, first published in 1942, Franz Neumann wrote that violence served to establish totalitarian control over German society.Violence throughout the Third Reich was used as a rational instrument of political power.Donald Trump's administration does the same.Democracy is dying right in front of us.Don't move a muscle!Tune out the world and tune-in to Light ‘Em Up — Right here and right now!Tune in and follow our sponsors Newsly and We want to hear from you!

On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, Phase II of the Gaza peace plan is the most challenging due to Hamas, which refuses to disarm or leave Gaza, abuses Palestinians, murders IDF soldiers, and repeatedly violates the ceasefire. Despite warnings from President Trump of potential obliteration, Hamas persists. Qatar's emir, a major Hamas funder and host to its leaders, accuses Israel of genocide and ceasefire breaches while calling for a Palestinian state. Turkey's Erdogan similarly harbors Hamas leaders, threatens Israel, and takes provocative actions. The ceasefire must be enforced urgently to stop ongoing murders and torture, and support should be given to Trump if he orders military action against Hamas. Also, Democrats are keeping the government shutdown by continuing to block a non-controversial continuing resolution to try and blackmail Republicans to approve $1.5 trillion in additional spending. This will generate massive debt—similar to the phony Inflation Reduction Act—leading to inflation, higher prices for gasoline, food, mortgages, and credit cards, ultimately harming average citizens and future generations. Later, Zohran Mandami must be defeated in New York's upcoming mayoral race. He dodges questions on Hamas support; campaigns with Imam Siraj Wahaj, who served as a character witness for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing mastermind and called for jihad. The US is charging two men allegedly associated with antifa with "terrorism.” The case follows President Donald Trump’s executive order to designate antifa a "domestic terrorist organization,” despite most experts agreeing that antifa is an ideology rather than an organized group. Cook's award-winning documentary and forthcoming book explore how ordinary women become entangled in conspiracy movements—from QAnon to spiritualized extremism—while searching for meaning, identity, and community.Cook recounts how the January 6th insurrection inspired her to study women drawn into these spaces and what she discovered: that many were mothers, caregivers, and former churchgoers who turned to online conspiracies to fill the void of belonging. Through intimate storytelling, she shares her road trip with two women convicted for their roles in January 6th, revealing how trauma, faith, and hope intertwine in the psychology of belief.Together, the hosts and Cook unpack questions of empathy, extremism, and how conspiratorial thinking becomes a kind of spiritual coping mechanism in a fractured America. The conversation explores what churches, communities, and even families can learn from these stories about the human desire for connection—and the danger of mistaking belonging for truth.Learn more: https://www.noellecook.com/aboutGuest Bio:Noelle Cook is an ethnographer and filmmaker whose work examines the intersections of gender, conspiracy, and extremism. In this episode, Bill speaks with congressional scholar Norm Ornstein about the deteriorating state of the United States Congress. They discuss the book Ornstein co-authored 13 years ago, 'It's Even Worse Than It Looks,' focusing on how the Republican party has evolved into an 'insurgent outlier.' Ornstein shares his personal history working in the Senate since 1970, citing a loss of 'institutional patriotism' among Republicans and their complete subordination to Donald Trump. He criticizes current congressional leadership, particularly Mike Johnson, and highlights issues like the Senate's blind approval of Trump nominees and the failure of effective oversight. Ornstein also addresses the implications of a government shutdown, the misuse of the Justice Department for political retribution, and the need for an effective Democratic response. He ends on a somber note, comparing current political dynamics to the erosion of democratic norms seen in history, suggesting that the road to recovery is uncertain and fraught with challenges. (No kidding.)Norman Ornstein is a political scientist, co-host of the podcast “Words Matter,” and author of books, including “It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism.” Today Bill highlights the work of one of his favorite morning reads, The Bulwark.
