Chris speaks with researcher and author Ross Downing about his book Germanic and Slavic Paganism: Security Threats and Resiliency. Ross, who works with a network of scholars and specialists focused on minority religions and extremism, explores how modern pagan traditions, particularly those rooted in Germanic and Slavic identity, are increasingly weaponized by extremist movements on both sides of the Ukraine War. From the myth of the warrior ideal to the role of neo-paganism in Russian special forces and the Azov movement, Ross unpacks the ideological messiness, spiritual camouflage, and social vulnerabilities that make these belief systems ripe for radicalization. They also discuss the “folkish vs. inclusive” divide, the algorithm's role in spreading conspiratorial spirituality, and why mainstream institutions need to step up—not just to contain extremism, but to support resilient, non-violent expressions of cultural identity. In a two-part exposé packed with revelations, this broadcast uncovers how foreign threats and internal chaos collide. Part one reveals a stunning breach in U.S. national security: Chinese-made solar inverters, embedded in our energy grid, may allow Beijing remote access—sparking serious questions about American vulnerability and political will to decouple from China. Despite repeated trade betrayals and cyberattacks, leadership appears hesitant to act decisively. Part two shifts to domestic turbulence. A disturbing bombing at an IVF clinic is linked to a radicalized antinatalist and registered Democrat—yet mainstream media quickly mislabels him as a pro-lifer. This incident joins a growing pattern of left-wing violence downplayed or mischaracterized. The segment also breaks down the Biden classified documents scandal, highlighting the hypocrisy in legal treatment compared to Trump, and questions the timing of Biden's cancer disclosure as a potential tactic to avoid prosecution. Together, these episodes paint a stark picture: America's biggest threats may be both foreign and within—and too many in power are looking the other way.

Can Europe withstand the ripple effect of the MAGA political wave?

International report

Célia Belin of the European Council on Foreign Relations tells RFI that Donald Trump's administration is treating Europe less as a partner and more as a rival. In backing nationalist movements and undermining multilateral institutions, it is exporting a political mode of operation that risks fracturing European unity. The impact of Donald Trump's second term in the White House is being felt far beyond US borders. Observers say this ripple effect can be seen across Europe, not just in policy but in the continent's political culture itself. For Dr Célia Belin of the European Council on Foreign Relations, the stakes are nothing less than the future of European liberal democracy. In her latest ECFR report, MAGA Goes Global: Trump's Plan for Europe, Belin warns that what might appear to be chaotic decisions from the Oval Office are, in fact, part of an ideological project.“There's actually a strong direction, a clear destination,” Belin told RFI. “Trump, surrounded by loyalists and MAGA Republicans, is ready to implement his plan – to push back on liberal democracy, and to push back on Europe."According to her, he sees Europe as “an extension of his political enemies – liberals and progressives” and views its institutions as bureaucratic hurdles rather than allies in global leadership.Culture wars without bordersTrump's administration – bolstered by figures including Vice President JD Vance and media mogul Elon Musk – has also made overtures to Europe's far right. They have voiced support for Germany's far-right AfD party and France's Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, including on Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) – helping to disseminate nationalist and populist rhetoric across the continent.“We're seeing a systematic attack on the liberal model that Europe represents,” said Belin. “This ‘Trumpian wave' has fired up nationalist opposition in Europe, even if it hasn't created a united front."‘Free Le Pen': US conservatives rally behind French far-right leaderNon merci to MAGAHowever, some of the European political parties that share Trump's scepticism of liberal institutions are treading carefully when it comes to embracing his brand of politics. While leaders such as Viktor Orbán in Hungary openly welcome MAGA-style backing, others see it as a double-edged sword.Following her recent legal conviction, Le Pen received support from MAGA-aligned figures. But her party responded with conspicuous silence.“They don't want or need this Trumpian support,” Belin noted. “Their political strategy is not about aligning with MAGA America – it's more French, more sovereignist."Embracing Trump too openly could risk undermining years of effort to mainstream the National Rally's image. “Nationalists are realising that now – it brings fuel to the fire, yes, but it also complicates their own domestic positioning," said Belin.Trump's first 100 days: Revolution or destruction? The view from FranceEurope respondsFrench President Emmanuel Macron was among the first European leaders to sound the alarm on the changing nature of the US-European alliance. "I want to believe that the United States will stay by our side but we have to be prepared for that not to be the case," he said in a televised address to the nation in March.I January, in a speech to French ambassadors, he said: "Ten years ago, who could have imagined it if we had been told that the owner of one of the largest social networks in the world would support a new international reactionary movement and intervene directly in elections, including in Germany."German Chancellor Olaf Scholz followed suit, criticising Musk's decision to give the AfD a platform just weeks before Germany's federal elections. However, Belin points out that the European response is still taking shape. “It's brand new as a phenomenon,” she said. “Europeans were prepared to be challenged on trade, on security – even on Ukraine. But this cultural challenge is unprecedented.”Meloni positions herself as Europe's ‘trump card' on visit to White HouseStill, as Belin notes, Trumpism is not a winning formula everywhere. “Turning fully Trumpist would derail Marine Le Pen's strategy. It's not a winning strategy in France,” she said. “But in more insurgent political systems, it might be."And there is concern too that Trumpism could outlive Trump himself.“There's been a transformation in the perception of America's global role,” Belin said. “And that will stick around. It will be pushed by some of the nationalist parties in our countries. That is the Trumpist legacy”.

In part two of our interview Arno Michaelis, we navigate the bizarre intersection of music, ideology, and redemption. If you've ever wondered how extremist movements actually work, this offers some great insight. Arno gives us the inside scoop on how a skinhead band like Centurion shifted 20,000 records whilst still getting royally ripped off by their label boss. We also chat about right wing ideology and symbolism, as Arno discusses how antisemitism serves as what "the connective tissue" that binds seemingly opposing extremist groups together. We delve into the psychological mechanics too. Taking in everything from Norse fantasy to Tolkien, as well as the very large psychological leaps bands like Skrewdriver had to take to justify playing rock n roll music and Jewish cabaret tunes. Arno also talks about how the music of the Beastie Boys was something of a saving grace as he exited the movement, and he tells us about how a MySpace message in the early 00s regarding his former band, Centurion, led him to reckon with the legacy of poison he created. Whilst also giving him the impetus to try to be a force for good in the world. Grab a cuppa and dive in. Supreme Court Decision on Transgender Military Ban: The Supreme Court allowed President Trump's ban on transgender individuals serving in the military to go into effect with a 6-3 decision. This policy bars individuals with gender dysphoria or those who have undergone gender transition from serving. The decision was seen as a victory for Trump, emphasizing a focus on military readiness and cohesion over social experiments. We emphasize that the military's primary role is to defend the country, not to serve as a platform for social issues. USAID Corruption: The podcast discusses a case of corruption involving a USAID official who steered contracts to a friend in exchange for secret payments. The official, Matthew Zahui, refused to allow auditors access to financial records, which raised suspicions. It was later discovered that he had directed contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to a friend's company, which then made payments to his personal bank account. We highlight the lack of accountability and the need for serious investigations and prosecutions in such cases. Defunding NPR: The podcast supports President Trump's efforts to defund NPR (National Public Radio), arguing that it is a partisan propaganda outlet. It provides examples of NPR's content that the authors find objectionable, such as stories on cannibalism, criticisms of the Declaration of Independence, and coverage of LGBTQ+ issues. We also argue that taxpayer money should not fund media outlets that promote a radical agenda. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. This week and next we're joined by a very special guest - Arno Michaelis, author, anti-extremism activist, reformed white nationalist and former singer of the neo-Nazi metal band Centurion. You may have seen Arno recently on YouTube where he did a rather brilliant interview with Business Insider. As long time fans of the pod know, Chris' interest in the far-right is something we've touched upon a lot over the last 7 and a half years. So, when the opportunity presented itself to chat with Arno about not just his past, but how music is used a tool for radicalisation, we couldn't pass it up. In true Unsung fashion, our conversation is deep an extensive, taking not just Arno's past and neo-Nazi music, but a broader discussion about the far-right's position in modern mainstream discourse. In part one, we chat about Arno's early interest in punk rock and hip hop, through his transformation from street punk to neo-Nazi skinhead, where he provides a raw, unfiltered account of his journey. Learn about his transformation into an author and advocate for peace, his reflections on the influence of bands like Skrewdriver and Guns N' Roses, and the dangerous allure of conspiracy theories. Along the way, laugh, cringe, and maybe feel a bit enlightened about the intersections of music, hate, and redemption. 00:00 Introduction and Setting the Scene 00:27 Introducing the Special Guest: Arno Michaelis 01:41 Arno's Background and Books 02:35 Parents for Peace: Mission and Work 04:09 Arno's Neo-Nazi Past and Music Career 06:17 The Role of Music in Radicalization 09:37 Arno's Early Life and Punk Influence 15:12 Transition to White Power Skinhead Movement 19:37 Punk Scene Dynamics and Ideological Conflicts 38:07 The Influence of Skrewdriver and Radicalisation 39:56 The Influence of Skrewdriver 41:32 Musical Roots and Personal Reflections 42:46 The Impact of Skrewdriver's Music 43:37 Skrewdriver's Legacy and Controversies 47:16 Personal Connections and Reflections 52:49 The Role of Music in Radicalisation 01:01:46 Antisemitism and Conspiracy Theories 01:13:14 The Enduring Appeal of Conspiracy Theories

Extremism in America has been on the rise. Last episode, we looked at extremist groups in Chicago and how they terrorized select groups of people and influenced housing policy in the city during the 1950s. But what does extremism look like today? Curious City host Erin Allen talks with Odette Yousef, a national security correspondent focusing on extremism at NPR, about why it's less about fringe groups and more about ideology that has permeated our culture. “January 6 was a good example of how everything has changed,” she says. “That to me was really a milestone in terms of how extremism looks in this country, because I think we have long expected it to come out of small cells or groups. And here it was just everyday Americans who had gotten really kind of radicalized until the point where they participated in the violence that day.” She also talks about how extremism has shown up in Chicago and how the city compares with other large American cities.

How do ordinary people become dangerous extremists? Former FBI agent Scott Payne infiltrated America's most violent hate groups and reveals their playbook. What We Discuss with Scott Payne: Scott Payne worked as an undercover FBI agent infiltrating various extremist organizations, including white supremacists like the KKK and accelerationists such as The Base, which aimed to trigger societal collapse and establish a white ethnostate. Accelerationist groups differ from traditional white supremacist organizations in that they don't believe in political solutions, but train for violence and "Boogaloo" (race war), preparing with tactical gear and weapons while planning attacks on infrastructure and targeted individuals. During his undercover work, Scott encountered disturbing rituals and behaviors, including a goat sacrifice during which members drank blood and took LSD as part of a neo-pagan ceremony associated with white supremacist ideology. White supremacist recruitment often targets vulnerable individuals from broken homes who are seeking belonging and connection, with online platforms like Telegram and Gab serving as recruitment grounds where extremist content can radicalize disaffected youth. Deescalation and communication skills proved to be Scott's most valuable tools throughout his career. His experience shows that even in hostile environments, the ability to talk through situations and remain calm under pressure is often more effective than physical confrontation — a skill anyone can develop and apply to their own difficult interactions.
