About Curtiss Murphy Curtiss Murphy has spent 32 years as a software engineer (20 of those years in games and gaming and twelve years building educational games. He spent 3 summers hosting the NSF's Edugaming workshop and six years as a professor of game design at Laguna College of Art and Design (for their Game Design MFA program). He has a few dozen minor publications/chapters. He's an award winning speaker, author, and game designer. He's been on 21 episodes of the podcast Game Design Zen. And he's currently the VP of Engineering at a Mobile Game Studio. He is the recent author of What Makes Great Managers Great: How to Raise Engagement, Give Feedback, and Answer the Questions No One's Asking. What You'll Find in this Episode with Curtiss Murphy Curtiss starts by flipping the show back to Joe and T.J. with a question about why they would want to have an “outsider” from education on the show. Listen to hear about comfort zones, learning from new people, and seeking alternative perspectives. That's what Leading Better and Growing Faster with Joe and TJ is all about. Curtiss simply says it, many managers are doing it wrong. His story will resonate with you as he admits that he once was one as well. Don't miss what he says about how it all changed for him. You want to hear what he says about medical errors and deaths based on miscommunication. He talks about going from 5 people to 40 and what management practices have done to increase performance on his team. The number one premise to start with as a leader is that there's confusion everywhere. ~ Curtiss Murphy Tune in to hear why we must always be clarifying expectations. Joe asks about “safety and making people feel safe at work.” Reminder for school leaders: Whatever we do impacts our employees. Don't miss what Curtiss says about “not enough” in this category. Curtiss looks for inspiration from his wife (and he tells us that we can't have her). He talks about being a nerd by trade and using the rules of improv (we wrote about this is 7 Mindshifts for School Leaders). Three rules (1) accept everything, (2) use yes, and, and (3) make your co-workers and partners look good. Curtiss wants to learn to be calm, be in the moment, and slow down his sense of urgency. He focuses on praising people to support the behaviors that he wants from them to repeat. Curtiss used to think that his job was just to empower people; he learned to empower the skill, not the person. His final thought: leadership = influencing others through trusting relationships. What great managers do that okay ones don't affects us all. Great managers create more than 8 times the value average managers do – that is a huge gap. Learn 5 key principles or approaches and become a better manager. How to be a great manager starts with how you view your job as manager. Managers create the most value through their teams. Your team is critical to enable you to do a great job. Great managers know this and work hard to make their team as good as they can be.How to be a better manager starts by putting the team before yourself. Working in service to your team is the best way to work in service to yourself as a leader. This is more important than great manager skills. What makes you a good manager is how much the team trusts you. Without trust there is no team, only a collection of individuals. Teams outperform groups of independent individuals. Working for the team is a brilliant way of building trust. For how to be a better manager and leader, focus on the environment you are creating. A lot of management skills go into creating a great trusting team environment – most important are what your decisions, actions and behaviours communicate to the team. How to be a good manager is partly about how well you can manager yourself. How to become a better manager at work – learn to be comfortable with conflict. Every organisation will have a level of conflict. Resources are limited, different teams have different objectives etc, PLUS every person is different. Conflict is guaranteed. How well you manage conflict – both constructive and destructive is essential for team success.Partnering with and valuing team members is vital for how to be a good manager and leader. Managers depend on their teams. You don't have a job without a team. Admire each person's strengths. Support them to develop further. Value what they bring to the team. Your beliefs about the team will be obvious through your actions and behaviours. Get your mental approach right – one of the key manager skills you need. How to be a good manager at work must include being unfailingly results orientated. Results is what your company need your team to deliver. Team results is what you are personally being assessed on. Great managers always focus their teams of delivering results. If you have any questions on “What Great Managers Do That Okay Ones Don't – 5 Secrets To Become A Better Manager”, please email me at support@enhance.training and I will get back to you.Jess ColesEnhance.training

We can all learn a lot from how great managers handle criticism. Dealing with criticism at work is not easy and as you climb the ranks, you are guaranteed to get more criticism. Take these 5 key actions to handle criticism at work.It is really easy to get defensive or dismiss criticism without thinking about what is behind the criticism. How you handle criticism at work in part will determine how far your career progresses. The better you get at dealing with criticism and in particular reframing criticism into learning opportunities, the more useful you will find feedback, the more comfortable colleagues will feel providing feedback and the quicker you will learn. All great building blocks for a successful career. The first action in how effective leaders handle criticism is to listen carefully and acknowledge the criticism. Working to understand what is behind the criticism gives you great insights into problems, attitudes and thinking. How to deal with criticism positively should always start with listening carefully. The second action in how to deal with criticism is to ask questions to get the specifics. Most people criticise others in general terms. By asking questions, you can guide them to giving you very specific feedback, which then become useful to you. The third action for how to handle criticism is to find the kernels of truth. “What is behind the criticism?” “Should I do something about it?” and “What can I do about it?” are all questions to ask to find the kernels of truth behind the criticism. Dealing with criticism is part of the job description of any manager and leader. The fourth action for how to handle criticism at work is to create an action plan. There is not better way to deal with criticism than to take positive action to address the criticism. Work out what, if any, actions you are going to take to address criticism. The fifth action for dealing with negative criticism is to practice receiving feedback. The better you get at managing your emotions and reactions when receiving criticism, the more likely you will get good at handling criticism in a very positive way, which will benefit you, your team and the business. Don't take criticism personally where at all possible. Look to learn as much as you can from the criticism, regardless if it is justified or fair or not. They go through fire for their team, allow people to make mistakes and grow, and protect people from putting their work over their life and family. Nick van Meeteren is one of those people and I had an incredible time learning from his view and mindset. Enjoy

How do some student managers manage to hit audacious sales goals and earn cushy profits? While their counterparts enjoy limited success even after working equally hard? On today’s show, we are joined by YEAA Vice-President’s Josh Drushel and Aaron Acorn who share with us some of the biggest things that can help you evolve from being a good manager to a great one. At Young Entrepreneurs Across America, we have, over time honed in on systems and processes to help you manage a large painting business without experiencing stress or panic. The student managers who follow these systems to the T end up running businesses that clock turnovers of $100,000 or more. While those who deviate from these systems enjoy limited success even after working as hard as their counterparts. So, on today’s show, we have Aaron and Josh sharing some of the biggest and most common mistakes that prevent student managers from hitting their ambitious goals. One of the most important things that we emphasize is the importance of keeping your recruiting, estimation, and sales pipelines full. If you get too involved in production and shift your focus away from these crucial aspects, you will find yourself lagging behind sooner or later. Along with the big things, you will also learn why you need to make the “small things” a part of your workflow. Particularly, we talk about the importance of incentivizing your painters, prepping your marketing material, and doing your payroll the right way. Enjoy! What You Will Learn In This Show How to go from being a good manager to being a great one Why you need to keep your recruiting, estimates, and sales pipelines full. All the time. Finding, developing, and retaining terrific team members is hard, but finding and retaining exceptional managers is even more challenging. While most positions within an organization are tasked with a particular set of responsibilities based on experience and skills, managers are charged with vast and complex duties. In recent times, both employers and employees have come to expect managers to keep up with the industry management trends, run a successful team, and still get work done. A manager's ability to navigate countless structural and procedural issues while keeping a cool head is what best describes excellent management. The phrase, ‘that's the best boss I've ever had,' is often used by employees to describe great managers. With that in mind, we welcome Ralph Peterson to this week's episode to help you become the boss everyone wants to be associated with. It’s likely that you, or someone you know has experienced grief and loss. Death, illness and challenging times are a part of life, but many of us are not equipped to communicate skilfully with others at these times, particularly in the workplace. Let’s face it, having conversations about death, tragedy, illness and challenging times are not easy or comfortable, but at some point, we’ll all face a situation when we’re going to need to do so. In this extract from a recent Great Managers MasterClass, we’re going to show you how to get more comfortable ‘discussing the undiscussables’ and allow you to Build a Compassionate Workplace! We’ll interview Groundswell Project Executive Director Jessie Williams. The Groundswell Project was established 5 years ago to enable social and cultural change when it comes to death and dying in Australia.
