Welcome, new subscribers, and welcome back, loyal readers! I'm happy you're here.Today's issue is dedicated to an interview with Mike Hixenbaugh, co-author of Southlake and author of They Came for the Schools: One Town's Fight Over Race and Identity, and the New War for America's Classrooms.Published by NBC News, Southlake is a six-part podcast about how a mostly-white community in a Texas suburb failed to respond to the harm that white students caused when they chanted the N-word in a video after a homecoming dance in 2018. (It's about a whole lot more, too.)I highly encourage you to listen to the podcast (if you haven't already), then take in the interview with Mike, then sign up for our discussion on Saturday, July 20, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. I'd be very happy if you were there.⭐️ About the authorMike Hixenbaugh is a senior investigative reporter for NBC News, co-creator of the Southlake and Grapevine podcasts, and author of They Came for the Schools: One Town's Fight Over Race and Identity, and the New War for America's Classrooms.Mr. Hixenbaugh's reporting in recent years on the battles over race, gender, and sexuality in public schools won a Peabody Award and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. While working as a newspaper reporter in Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, and Texas, Hixenbaugh uncovered deadly failures in the U.S. military, abuses in the child welfare system, and safety lapses at major hospitals, winning numerous national awards and triggering reforms aimed at saving lives and keeping families together.Mr. Hixenbaugh lives in Maryland with his wife and four children.⭐️ About the interviewI got a chance to interview Mike last week, and it was an honor. Our conversation was one of my favorites ever at Article Club. In addition to talking about Southlake, we really went deep into his book (which I highly recommend). We discussed a number of topics, including:* how he got interested in the story in the first place* how his identity as a white man influenced his reporting* how he tried to take in the viewpoints of conservative Southlake residents* how listening to young people was paramountMost of all, I appreciated Mike's generosity and thoughtfulness. It was abundantly clear from the interview how deeply Mike has gotten to know this community and how thoroughly he has reported this story. He is not afraid of nuance — and he is not afraid to tell the truth. As an educator and a journalism fan, I could have talked to Mike for much longer. Our conversation made me very excited to discuss Southlake with you.

Nicole Clarke-Springer isn't losing sleep over the final product; as a dancer and choreographer, she's more interested in the process. She says the communal nature of her work is what makes the performance authentic and affects the audience. Nicole shares with Jeanne why she threw out her plan to move to New York City for training; what the three points of collaboration are when she's choreographing and why they matter; how embracing the process contributes to her success; why listening to your intuition is important; and why she doesn't tell herself she will do better.Nicole Clarke-Springer, with a B.S. in arts administration-dance from Butler University, excelled early, honored as Butler Ballet's Outstanding Performer. Her career blossomed at Deeply Rooted Dance Theater (DRDT), starting as an apprentice before becoming a company member. Clarke-Springer's notable performances include working with Roberta Flack and Jennifer Holiday. She took a brief hiatus in 2007 to teach at Western Kentucky University and tour Istanbul with the Clifton Brown Dance Company. Returning to DRDT, she directed the Summer Dance Intensive, honed her choreographic skills with works like Nine and Femme, and contributed to Congo Square Theatre's Nativity. In 2013, she joined DRDT's Artistic Team and was spotlighted as an Emerging Choreographer for "Generations." Her piece Hadiya was acclaimed for its poignancy and tribute to victims of violence. Clarke-Springer's influence extended to choreographing for the Steve Harvey Show and teaching nationwide, including positions at Chicago State University and Northwestern University. Upholding Deeply Rooted's mission, she fosters an environment of spiritual affirmation, open dialogue, and accountability, leading to her appointment as Artistic Director in 2019.Website: deeplyrooteddancetheater.org instagram: @nikkispringer5facebook: Nicole Clarke-Springer
Millions of people found the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic difficult to deal with. This was especially true for children, teens, and young adults; and sometimes, it resulted in depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. My special guest, Hadiya, a 22-year-old recording artist, music producer, mental health advocate, musician, and CEO of Dollhouse Entertainment Media and Publishing, discusses her emotional odyssey captured in her latest album, "My Space." Each track encapsulates a chapter of her profound journey through the labyrinth of mental health challenges exacerbated by the turbulent era of COVID-19. With raw vulnerability, she shares her navigation of tumultuous personal and family loss, collegiate disappointment, self-discovery, and adaptation to the unexpected and sometimes unexplainable depths of Life's occurrences. Find hope, solace, strength and resilience in Hadiya's melodic confessions and cathartic voyage through the depths of the human experience. “My Space” album https://linqapp.com/hadiya_ayodele?r=link&fbclid=PAAaYcrb3yGv6YJzEIAKqkd225rntKexcpB6PVuU1Ix8VoR8YtIHbCab7Z8vM_aem_AbAtu2N5knQ-4HskhsxZi6Q40J6wGluanaCF0LbLULDadli5Oghm7gnGyr7X168eZWE Hadiya “Moon”: NPR Tiny Desk Submission https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2rCYghK2HI Hadiya: IG: www.instagram.com/hadiyadoll?igsh=aDNic3prdzMzOGpq&utm_source=qr TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@hadiyashouse?_t=8ku2C0GJtzK&_r=1 FB: www.facebook.com/hadiya.ayodele www.BalinADurrMD.com Medical Disclaimer: The information provided does not substitute for professional medical advice. Dr. Hadiya Sewer, an Africana philosopher, Decolonial Advisor, and spiritual Oracle, manages in this episode to show us the path of bridging spirituality with decolonial healing, land healing, and social justice. She asks us the right questions, like the one above, and then gives us some answers. Dr. Sewer shares that when we have a spiritual awakening that includes indigenous symbols and ways, we want to balance our inspiration directly from spirit with our awareness of how power flows here in the mundane world. She says spirit calls us to be comrades, and yes, it's challenging to get everything "right" in the politically correct ways. Yet we are being called to connect, to walk a path of Love as we stay responsible for how we impact the structures and flows of power. 09/13/2023 Bruh Issa Murder Summary: In this episode of "Bruh issa Murder," the hosts discuss the tragic case of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl from Chicago who was a victim of gun violence. Hadea was a talented majorette and had even performed at President Obama's second inauguration. The hosts highlight the devastating impact of gun violence, particularly in black communities, and the need for stricter gun control measures. They also discuss the systemic disparities and limited access to resources that contribute to the prevalence of gun violence. The episode touches on the quick investigation and conviction of two suspects and the recent appeal for a new trial by one of the convicted men. The hosts emphasize the importance of comprehensive solutions, including mentorship programs and support for individuals affected by gang violence. The case of Hadiya Pendleton serves as a reminder of the urgent need for change in addressing gun violence and its impact on young individuals. Key Takeaways: The murder of Hadiya Pendleton highlights the issue of gun violence, particularly in black communities. Stricter gun control measures and comprehensive strategies are needed to address the root causes of violence. Mentoring and support programs can help combat gang violence and provide opportunities for a brighter future. The quick investigation and conviction of suspects in Hadiya's case raise questions about handling the confession and the potential for an innocent man to be imprisoned. Addressing gun violence requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses systemic disparities and provides resources to communities affected by violence. With Dr. Hadiya Roderique, writer of Black on Bay Street and other articles, cultural critic, lawyer, researcher, speaker, and consultant. Equal Pay Day is symbolic of how far into the next year the average woman works to have earned what the average man earned the previous year. In Canada, women make 88 cents for every dollar men make. But there's more than one gender pay gap because those who face gender inequalities are a diverse population. Racialized women make 67 cents to the dollar for racialized men, Indigenous women make 65 cents to the dollar for Indigenous men, newcomer women make 71 cents to the dollar for newcomer men, and women with disabilities also have lower average incomes compared to men with disabilities. We would be wise to think of it as gender pay gaps, plural. Canada has had pay equity laws since the 1970s. But pay gaps and unfairness in pay persist. Girls face a summer job gender pay gap of almost $3.00 per hour. Women post-secondary students leave school with lesser means to pay off student loans. And the gendered pension gap means that women retire with about 80% of the pension men retire with. Dr. Hadiya Roderique joins us to address gender pay gaps, their impacts on Black and equity-seeking women, how bias plays out in workplaces, what we need to do about it. Hadiya is a researcher, writer, speaker, consultant, and recovering Bay Street lawyer. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Journalism at the University of Toronto's Scarborough campus, where her research focuses on racist discourse in how journalists write about race in Canadian media. She holds a J.D. and M.A. in Criminology from the University of Toronto, and completed her Ph.D. in Organizational Behaviour at the Rotman School of Management. She is an award-winning writer, probably best known for her piece Black on Bay Street, which set Corporate Canada ablaze, and earned her recognition as one of Canada's Top 25 most influential lawyers by Canadian Lawyer's magazine in 2018. She sits on the Board of the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund and on the Equity Diversity and Inclusion committee of Ultimate Canada. “You have to be part of changing the culture. If you want racist speech or actions to be unacceptable, you have to be one of the people saying it's unacceptable.” In Episode 12 of REAL TIME, we discuss racial biases and opportunity gaps facing BIPOC professionals in Canada. Joined by Dr. Hadiya Roderique – speaker, researcher and author of the viral article “Black on Bay Street'' – we look at ways to address racism in the workplace and other interpersonal settings. Host Amy Lehr talks with Hadiya Masieh. Hadiya joined Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir when she was in college. After a decade, she severed those ties, dedicating her time and energy to speaking out against the ideas promoted by such radical groups. She uses her insights and experience to deter young people from taking the same path, using technology as one tool in that effort.

So many of us fell into training, learning and development - it wasn't a selected career path for most of my friends and colleagues in the industry. This week's guest is no different. Hadiya Nuriddin started much like I did, supporting peers with hardware and software questions, being the most knowledgeable and being able to clearly communicate the "how-to" and "why" of training. Hadiya and I bonded over a previous conversation chatting about quality assurance, quality control and review cycles for learning projects and I knew that this conversation should be not only shared between the two of us, but with ALL of us, our clients and our projects. We want the best output for our projects. We want our clients to be happy. Part of this is ensuring quality output in our learning programs, whether it's an instructor led experience (presentation, student guide, facilitator guide), job aids and support materials, or eLearning! We want things to work, to be accurate, to be almost perfect. I've had my share of projects the client has seen before quality assurance testing was completed, and I can't tell you the number of time's I've cringed because a button doesn't work, I forgot the trigger, or it goes to the wrong place. It happens, especially when I look after my own reviews, which I don't recommend. The value of a defined QA process is important to delivering a high quality end product.
