This is an encore presentation of a previous episode, originally airing in September 2020. 4x Grammy-winning producer, engineer and mixer Vance Powell has worked with a wide range of artists and bands including Chris Stapleton, Buddy Guy and Phish. For vinyl collectors, he's arguably most known for being a consistent studio go-to for Jack White, not only being involved with proper studio releases from Jack and his various projects (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs) but Vance is behind the boards of most every Live At Third Man Records LP, where bands record short sets in front of a couple hundred fans, direct-to-acetate. On this episode, Vance points to his favorite Third Man sessions he's recorded (including some mysterious Radiohead demos), how Chris Stapleton's famous cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" almost didn't happen, and why Vance's own barbecue kept him from his dream of recording U2. "When you switch the gear of what you're operating on from the memorized information to the gear of intuitive, faithful response, it's a whole different frequency that's emitted from the hands and from the soul," country shredder Daniel Donato expresses on this episode of Wong Notes. He's talking about what makes for powerful improvisation, and if you know anything about the guitarist, you know this insight around the topic is coming from someone who's a master on their instrument.Throughout his conversation with Cory, Donato shares his uniquely intellectual philosophies about music, explaining what it means to exploit versus explore creatively, how lessons in faith and trust of his bandmates came to supersede his knowledge around music, and how "listening and alignment" of one vision is most important when jamming with others. He also sheds light on his experiences working with producers Robben Ford and Vance Powell, and the different collaborative dynamics he had with both.Following an emphatic statement from Cory that he has always, always been loyal to Dave Matthews Band, and a comment from Daniel on how a drummer really is at the core of a successful jam, Daniel elaborates: "The song is a vehicle for a spirit." He says Carter Beauford's performance on "Ants Marching" on DMB's first live album, Remember Two Things, which features an extended 2 and 4 pattern in the intro, perfectly serves the song. "I need players that are very spiritually and emotionally vulnerable," says Donato, "and willing to do things that are abstract and left-field that wouldn't be intuitive."Clearly an admirer of Cory's work, Daniel has some questions for him towards the end of the interview. Then, Cory quizzes Daniel on gear that he finds essential. His response? Whatever feels like the right pick to you, Mogami cables, and, if money isn't an object, a Fender black-panel. The approach is on full display on Gallagher's debut EP, The Confluence, a bracing six-song set on which the South Pasadena resident establishes himself as a multi-faceted songwriter, singer and musician. Produced, engineered and mixed by multiple Grammy winner Vance Powell (whose credits include Phish, Chris Stapleton and Jack White, among others), the record brims with lovingly detailed arrangements and exuberant musicianship on which Gallagher lets listeners in on feelings and observations, both stormy and sentimental. My guest today is Mike Fahey an engineer, mixer, and producer from the great state of Maine. Michael went to college for mechanical engineering at the University Of Maine before switching over to an audio engineering degree at The New England School Of Communications (NESCOM). My first instrument was the trumpet in my elementary school band and he picked up the guitar at 11.  In 2012, He landed an internship at Sputnik Sound after Vance Powell came to speak at NESCOM earlier that year about mixing for The Raconteurs' Consolers of the Lonely. He moved to Nashville that fall and after two months of interning was hired by Mitch Dane to be his assistant engineer. During that time, Sputnik moved to a new building in Berry Hill where he helped with construction for 7 months renovating the studio. In late 2014 Vance hired Michael as his assistant engineer and he has been with him ever since. In May 2020 Mike started his own studio, Starbird Sound and has been able to spend time on his production projects while working full time at Sputnik. My guest today is Enrico Berto an engineer, producer, and musician from Northern Italy. I am very lucky to receive a lot of wonderful emails and messages from our listeners, aka you Rockstars. Here is what I received from Enrico. “Hello Lij, Few weeks ago I discovered your podcast and ever since I've been an avid consumer of it! I love the way you make your guests feel cause they open up in a way I rarely saw on other shows. Beside the great nerdy tips they seem to be willing to share deeper stuff - ex I now know what's Vance Powell monthly break even or that huge mixers still suffer from "impostor syndrome" - and this is very inspiring and precious. I've been in the music industry as a session player, then a mixer/producer for nearly 20 years and as covid hit I was having a major momentum that got slowed down quite a bit. Listening to your podcast is a great source of inspiration and it's giving me the power to keep my head down and carry on with the grind. I thank you so much for it! I have a vast love for music in all its genres. If I really had to pinpoint some they would be Classic Rock, Alternative Rock and HipHop. I make music because of a deep, almost spiritual, connection to it. Making music is my passion and my call. I decided to turn it into my profession so my whole life could revolve around it.  I went to the University to study foreign languages and literature but later attended the Musician Institute in Los Angeles and a couple of Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft seminars. And then decided to give the music a serious go so I started hustling. I played in bands, composed jingles for TV, taught guitar, recorded and mixed bands on a crappy laptop out of mouldy rehearsal spaces …you name it! I was eager to get more so I pushed further by moving to London and studying sound engineering at the SAE Institute. I then began session playing, touring, producing and engineering full time, all of it bouncing between UK and Italy. In 2008 I founded Mushroom Studio: a little production heaven hidden on the mountains of northern Italy where other artists and I could cozy up and create.” I'm always grateful to receive emails like this, and listening to Enrico‘s work I discovered that it was fantastic! And so nothing brings me greater joy than to help showcase members of our own community at Recording Studio Rockstars.  Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: http://MixMasterBundle.com THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy Use code ROCKSTAR to get 10% https://samplyaudio.com Use code RSR20 to get 20% off for the first 3 months https://carltatzdesign.com/Mixroom-Mentor https://www.Spectra1964.com http://MacSales.com/Rockstars http://iZotope.com/Rockstars use code ROCK10 for 10% off http://www.thetoyboxstudio.com http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com Hear guests discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3hXsJvZHlwDgfISd057ZeA?si=612c396661a04fdd If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: http://RSRockstars.com/338

I am totally psyched to welcome today’s guest. He is a Grammy award-winning mixer, and owner of the beautiful (and newly relocated) Sputnik Sound.  He has a long discography of accomplished records including artists like Keb Mo, Jars Of Clay, Jack White and 3rd Man Records, Buddy Guy, Kings Of Leon, Danger Mouse, Sturgill Simpson and some well known local artists: Moon Taxi, Bobby Bare Jr, and Jeff The Brotherhood (who lives right down the street from me in fact). Our guest originally hails from the town of Joplin MO which most people mistake as being named after the Ragtime Pianist Scott Joplin, but was in fact named after its founder the Reverend Joplin.  And other than being mentioned in Bobby Troup’s legendary song “Route 66”, the town of Joplin MO, which gained notoriety for mining Zinc, may owe its biggest musical credit to our guest on today’s show.  I met him back in 2002 when he became the head engineer for the incredible Blackbird Studios, right here in the city of Berry Hill a part of Nashville often referred to as the new music row with over 20 recording studios in a 3 mile radius.  I am honoured to be here at Sputnik Sound for this episode of Recording Studio Rockstars. On this episode, Vance points to his favorite Third Man sessions he's recorded (including some Radiohead demos), how Chris Stapleton's famous cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" almost didn't happen, and why Vance's own barbecue kept him from his dream of recording U2. #48: This week on the pod I'm talking to one half of Toronto based duo, Moscow Apartment, the lovely Brighid Fry. Moscow Apartment hit the music scene with a bang and have just released their second EP, Better Daughter. I had a great time talking with Brighid about her partnership with Pascale, demanding a violin, and balancing her music with highschool. Great chat!Find Moscow Apartment online:https://www.moscowapartment.ca/https://open.spotify.com/artist/2IwSOO9bV4ZwvpnNk9f6lN https://www.instagram.com/moscowapt/Moscow Apartment bio: Moscow Apartment create lush, folk imbued indie rock that is interwoven with the timeless and perceptive writing of singer-songwriters Brighid Fry and Pascale Padilla. The harmonious teenage duo released their sophomore EP, Better Daughter (Hidden Pony Records) on July 10th, 2020. The EP presents an evolution of their sound from acoustic beginnings to the freedom they now enjoy playing live in a full band, which is translated in Better Daughter’s layered arrangements.2017 marked the release of Moscow Apartment’s acclaimed self-titled debut EP that turned industry heads and won them a Toronto Independent Music Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award. The following year they clinched a Canadian Songwriting Contest prize and won Slaight Music’s ‘It’s Your Shot’ songwriting contest and its $100,000 grand prize in artist development. Fry and Padilla have spent the intervening years touring and developing their skills as producers and writers, receiving guidance from the likes of Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew and Grammy-winner Chin Injeti. The duo produced Better Daughter in collaboration with Grammy winner Vance Powell (who produced Two Timer) and long time collaborator Guillermo Subauste, who assisted in bringing a poetic and multilayered collection of songs to life. Tackling subjects which range from internalized misogyny to the complicated nature of adolescence, the new E.P continues to bring electric crunch to indie folk.Music for the podcast today was created by Matt Large: https://open.spotify.com/artist/107WzwlsOTR6Nxnw2kPHd3

We've had a lot of new podcasts come out recently. Today I want to tell you about one of those, and tell you about a few other things happening in the music world. Genesis and Phish Connections on Beyond the Pond. This week Brian and Dave released part 1 of their exploration of the connections between Genesis and Phish. They're joined by HF Pod co-host and Osiris production wizard Matt Dwyer and Tom Marshall to discuss the history of Genesis and their lasting impact on the origins of Phish across two episodes. In Part I, they start to outline the connection between Genesis and Phish, with lots of music from both bands.Trey and The Roots on Jimmy Fallon. If you missed this, you must check it out. Last night, Trey played “I Never Needed You Like This Before” on The Tonight Show, and he was the first musician to perform in-studio since the pandemic began. The energy was clear in that room, and Jimmy Fallon said as much at the end, about how much he missed live music. Marcus King Series Raises $80K for MusiCares. From JamBase, Marcus King announced that his livestream series, Four Of A Kind, and accompanying auction raised $80,000 for MusiCares. King worked with Spotify's COVID-19 Music Relief project for the charity event and Spotify matched proceeds donated through the fund. The series took place between July 13 and August 3, and featured tons of guests. Really cool that Marcus was able to raise that much for a good cause.New Single from Old 97s. From JamBase, the Old 97's shared “Bottle Rocket Baby,” the latest single off their upcoming album, Twelfth. ATO Records will release the group's appropriately titled 12th album on August 21. Still, he's found plenty of time over that span to step out on his own: Hosting the podcast Wheels Off, writing children's books and recording seven solo records containing collaborations with Jon Brion, Aimee Mann, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, longtime session drummer Jim Keltner and members of the Decemberists. Recorded at Vance Powell's renowned Sputnik Sound in Nashville (as the Old 97's began work on their 12th proper album), Rhett muses on his early fascinations with Joan Jett, the Kingston Trio and ZZ Top, pumping quarters into the vinyl jukeboxes of his local diner, how patterns in genre fiction influence his solo albums and what Wheels Off has taught him about the creative process. "Life's too short to not wanna try and learn new things while you're here. Sometimes when writing a record we'll say okay, we've got five or six straight ahead, up-tempo rock numbers, maybe we should try writing a song that's a slower tempo or in a minor key or even some finger picking bass stuff that we sometimes do. Sometimes Jean-Paul (drums) says we don't have any songs in this time signature and we will think about that but for the most part we kind of follow our guts and not overthink it too terribly."Listen to the full interview to hear Neil's thoughts on the upcoming Clutch album 'Book of Bad Decisions', the unusual choice of using a producer in Vance Powell that is better known for country music, the bands formula when it comes to writing, a step back into the early days of the band and how they broke into the music industry, the difficulties faced with coming up with fresh material the more you release, how Clutch have changed musically over their illustrious career and more.Book of Bad Decisions is released September 7 via Weathermaker Music.

The truth is almost always that it's a wild and unpredictable path we end up on. Vance Powell is a perfect example. Vance is now also co-owner of Sputnik Sound.   Early Life: Vance was introduced to electronics early in his childhood, as his grandfather was an electrical engineer and miner. He later attended electronic school while in high school. This helped him to land a job as a second audio engineer in a local studio – Massey Studios – in Missouri where he worked for $5/hour learning and teaching himself the arts of mixing, and other tools of the trade like tape duplication (i.e. mastering). This marked the beginning of his successful career as an audio mix engineer.   Reference Monitors: Auratone Monitors are speakers designed to listen to mono mixes. Yamaha NS10’s later became the replacement for Auratone reference monitors.   “…I use NS10s (Yamaha) because they sound cool… and they will translate well in any situation.” –Vance Powell “It’s all about your reference… It doesn’t matter what your speakers are,” says Powell. “I have definitely made changes to a mix based on a mono iPhone speaker. When asked how one is able to hear the bass on a mono iPhone speaker he says simply “turn the bass off and then back on.”   Jam Session: Q: What is the best advice you have for someone just starting out? A: You have to be fearless to make it in this business. If you are a person who is afraid of change, or afraid of failing, or afraid of losing your house… you’re normal, but if you are afraid and act upon it because you are afraid, you’re not going to last.   Q: What was a time where you feel you hit a real point of failure or a time you felt like giving up that turned out to be a valuable learning experience for you. A: A year after I moved to Nashville, I did my first session and I had no idea what these people were wanting or doing. In some ways that was an interesting failure but I’ve been very lucky in that I don’t have anything I can really point out and say, “that was a disaster.”   Q: I definitely know you for working with a lot of artists that like to push the boundaries and really get to the heart of what makes something great. You want to tell us a little bit about that? A: Obviously, I’ve spent 8 years working with Jack white and that’s been an incredibly eye-opening thing because he’s pretty amazing. He’s probably the most talented person I’ve ever been around. He’s one my favorite drummers…ever. He’s my favorite keyboard player, pianist and organist. He’s the easiest artist I’ve ever had to get a guitar sound for. It doesn’t matter what amp he plays, it doesn’t matter what guitar, it doesn’t matter how old the strings are it doesn’t matter what microphone you put in front of it, it sounds just like him. It’s all in his hands. He’s an amazing vocalist.   Q: What is a tip about the process of recording that you learned while working with artists like Jack White? A: Learn to be fast. I think anybody learning this business should do live sound. Live sound teaches you a bunch of things. You have to put a mix together in a very short period of time. You don’t have all day. You have one song to put a killer 48-channel mix together; otherwise you’re going to lose people.   Q: If you were dropped into a strange city and you were going to start out in recording or live sound, what advice would you have for someone who’s willing to take on that challenge? A: If you want to record, the first thing you need to do is purchase some way to record such as a laptop and an interface or port-a-studio. Then go find a band that you are willing to do what ever it takes to help them out. That means cart their gear around, do live sound for them, or record demos in your basement. Get yourself 4 good microphones. You can pretty much record a band with 4 or 5 good microphones. Don’t let the technology get in the way of creativity. I have a rule for my own productions and that is: my entire record has to fit inside 32 tracks. Don’t be afraid to make a decision; that’s the number one thing I’d say to anyone first starting out.   Websites:   Twitter - @Vancalot Sputniksound.com Credits - Allmusic.com   So if you have any questions or suggestions for the show please email me lij@recordingstudiorockstars.com   Also you can check out more at recordingstudiorockstars.com to follow the blog or watch the free videos. After the usual bits and news from around the industry, including an audio clip in which Randy Bachman definitively proves what the infamous opening chord is to The Beatles' “A Hard Day’s Night,” we kick off the interviews with The Road Heavy’s Ryan Blake, who joins Andrew on the phone from Nashville where the band is currently recording. Also, we have the last of our Canadian Music Week interviews, this one with Luke Austin of the Toronto-based Luke Austin Band. Luke discusses recording in Nashville with producer Vance Powell, visiting Third Man Records, touring on a train made famous by the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin in the film Festival Express, and more. Lastly, we have Mercedes Arn-Horn of Courage My Love. The band has been up to a lot since being on the cover of Canadian Musician magazine a couple years ago. They’ve just re-issue their EP “Becoming” and are hard at work writing and recording their next album. Our Canadian Spotlight Song of the Week is “Joey Ramone” by Montreal’s The Magic Man.

We talk technique including specifics of his analog workflow, business, including managers plus a bit of criticism of the old guard of the music industry. I love talking with Vance.
