Castlehaven's reign as champions is over after St Finbarr's blasted a remarkable six goals in their Premier Senior Football Championship quarter-final clash. Steven Sherlock stitched three of them and the margin of victory now makes the Blues the favourites for Andy Scannell Cup. They're still in the hunt for the double too, with a semi-final against Sars on the horizon. There was no shortage of drama in the other football quarter-finals, Newcestown surviving a penalty shootout with Carrigaline and Ballincollig grabbing the last three scores against Duhallow to win by a point. Cork hurler Luke Meade and super subkeeper Christopher White were the Newcestown heroes while Dara Dorgan, Seán O'Neill and Tadhg O'Connell raised the white flags the Collig. There were some upsets in the lower grades, including Ballinora's victory over previously unbeaten Gabriel Rangers while Ilen Rovers, who have dropped down the tiers in recent years, defeated Mitchelstown despite the return of Mark Keane. Kanturk and Knocknagree produced an absolute belter in the SAFC, John Fintan Daly's side moving on after extra time. There were some brilliant individual displays. Sherlock hit a hat-trick and Ian Maguire was the Barrs' standout performer. Éire Óg beat Bishopstown and former Cork U20 All-Ireland winner Jack Murphy was immense. Adam Walsh Murphy got three points from wing-back for Valleys Rovers as they drew with Carbery Rangers in the PSFC relegation playoff. In the PIFC decider to avoid the drop, Pa Lucey nailed the key penalty as Macroom survived for the third year running after a 10-point comeback against Bandon. Lucey also clipped a remarkable five two-pointers from placed balls. We also pay tribute to Patrick Horgan after he called time on his Cork hurling career after 18 seasons. What does it mean for the Rebels in 2026, in terms of free-takers, attacking line-up and experience in the squad. There's a preview of next weekend's hurling semi-finals, toplined by Sars-Barrs and Blackrock-Midleton. In Senior A, Bride Rovers contest their fifth consecutive semi. Has their time finally come? Now in its third season, every week Éamonn Murphy will be joined by The Echo team, including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, Jack McKay, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. The headlines are full of the cruel, unjust, illegal, unconstitutional, and costly treatment of immigrants by the Trump administration. This episode of the Real Science Exchange podcast was recorded during a webinar from Balchem's Real Science Lecture Series.Throughout the last 30 years, the dairy industry has moved to producing highly concentrated versions of milk proteins. In cows' milk, about 80% of the protein is casein and 20% is in the serum or whey phase. These ratios vary by species. There are three major caseins in cows' milk: alpha-S-casein, beta-casein, and kappa-casein. The first two are rich in phosphate for calcium binding. Kappa-casein is critical in a micellar structure that allows these structures to stay suspended in the milk. (1:21)Whey proteins also differ by species. In cows' milk, about 50% of the whey protein is beta-lactoglobulin. It's rich in branched-chain amino acids, and it is not present in human milk so it is a focus of allergy research. Alpha-lactalbumin is found in all mammals and is a cofactor for lactose production. (10:34)Caseins and whey proteins are different from one another and are in completely different classes of proteins. From structure, to size, to amino acid content, to solubility; these two types of proteins are yin and yang. (11:51)When fluid milk or whey is concentrated by removing water, some sugars and other materials dissolve via evaporation or membrane filtration. It results in dried powders, milk protein concentrate, milk protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolates. Concentrates contain 80-85% protein and isolates contain more than 90% protein. (17:14)What's driving the current and probably future popularity of these dairy proteins? One, is their versatility in many food applications, and the other is the superior nutritional quality of the proteins. Nearly half of the milk protein concentrate use is for mainstream nutrition and sports beverages. Similar trends have been observed for whey protein isolates. (20:05)Dairy proteins are very rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) like leucine. BCAAs help initiate protein synthesis, are important for muscle recovery, help with weight loss by maintaining blood glucose levels, are synergistic with exercise, and can promote healthy aging. Dr. Lucey gives several different examples of products utilizing dairy proteins. He predicts that the increased focus on nutrition products, interest in isolating individual proteins and improving export opportunities will continue to drive demand for dairy proteins in the future. (27:21)All of the main milk proteins have genetic variants, which are minor amino acid differences in the same protein. Variants occur at different frequencies among breeds. Beta-casein has two variants, A1 and A2. There is one amino acid difference out of 209 total amino acids, located at position 67 where a histidine is found in variant A1 and a proline is found in variant A2. When histidine is present, the beta-casein is prone to cleavage at position 67, creating a fragment called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7). When proline is present, it hinders the cleavage of casein at position 67. BCM-7 is an exogenous opioid peptide with the potential to elicit opioid activity on a range of tissues and organs. It's known as a “bioactive peptide” and some others from milk and cheese have been implicated as anti-hypertensive. (35:26)In the late 1990s, some researchers claimed that A1 milk was implicated in diabetes, coronary heart disease, autism, and schizophrenia. Subsequent reviews and investigations by significant international bodies found no evidence of these claims. (40:34)In closing, Dr. Lucey answers questions from the webinar audience. He talks about the potential of breeding cows customized for the production of minor milk components, milk components as renewable bio-plastics, and the superiority of milk proteins compared to plant proteins. Watch the full webinar at balchem.com/realscience. (47:41)Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to invite more people to join us at the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table. Did you know that the United States is one of the least trained and certified HVAC industries in the modern world? Many countries require thousands of hours of training as well as completing a nationally recognized certification. Here in the United States it varies by state and even city. Here in my home state of Indiana there is no state-level HVAC license, but you are required as a landscaper.....let that sink in. Take 25 and check out this interesting perspective from Aidan Lucey, a journeyman refrigeration mechanic who understands apprenticeships of different continents.

Police Union Willing to TalkAt an Akron City Council meeting, Brian Lucey, representing Akron's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, stated the union's willingness to engage in discussions on police reform, offering to meet with anyone at any time for this purpose. Lucey's remarks were prompted by Councilman James Hardy's suggestion to pause discussions on a new police headquarters until reform is achieved. Councilwoman Jan Davis echoed the need for dialogue on policing in Akron.Hardy expressed support for Davis' call for reform-oriented conversations, indicating his intention to vote against funding for a new police department until meaningful reform discussions take place. He emphasized the importance of involving all stakeholders in these talks and advocated for a new standard for police-community relations.Lucey accused Hardy of supporting police defunding, which Hardy refuted, citing his past support for police funding increases. Hardy emphasized the necessity of rethinking the current approach to policing and promoting constructive dialogue rather than divisive rhetoric. Both Hardy and Davis emphasized the importance of involving Akron's underserved communities in reform discussions and expressed readiness to collaborate with the union and other stakeholders to initiate proactive conversations aimed at positive change.Parasson's Closing All But One LocationParasson's is closing all of their locations except for the on on Waterloo road. As we enter the busy part of the XC season, we award the next batch of D3 Glory Days Runner of the Week Awards. For the first time in this young award, the runners hail from the same college. Week 4 winners are John Lucey and Genna Girard from Williams College. After winning the Little 3 Championship last weekend, John Lucey continued his winning ways in 2023. This time, he crossed the line first at his home invite: Purple Valley. Once a bigger invite, Purple Valley still attracts strong team including last year's national champs: MIT. Up front, Lucey led his teammates to a 1-2-3 victory which helped pave the way for an early season victory over MIT. Lucey knows where they're at in the season but gains confidence from this individual and team victories. Lucey was an All-American last year and has goal to improve upon his 18th place finish. Genna Girard officially opened her 2023 season with a commanding victory. With her win by almost a minute, Girard was excited to get back to racing. She suffered an injury during the indoor track season and wasn't able to race Outdoors. Girard wasn't sure what to expect in this first race and was aiming to keep it a controlled effort. And she did just that. With her only competition coming from MIT, Girard was able to pull away from them early and never looked back. Girard brings a great perspective on how to handle injuries. In the episode, she goes into how she has grown as a runner as she reflects on her tendencies earlier in college. Girard is excited to be back healthy and running with her teammates. She was an All-American in XC back in 2021 and after missing a top 40 spot last year, she has her eyes set on that recognition again. How to Support D3 Glory Days: D3 Glory Days Venmo. Conor Lucey's book House and Home in Georgian Ireland: Spaces and Cultures of Domestic Life (Four Courts Press, 2022) explores the everyday character and functions of domestic spaces in Georgian Ireland. While the design and decoration of the country pile and the aristocratic town house enjoys a long and distinguished literature, to date there has been no sustained examination of how rooms were habitually occupied and experienced, or how different social demographics--not least the burgeoning 'middling sorts'--might have informed approaches to spatial design and functionality. Drawing on recent pioneering research, the topics and themes addressed here range widely from comfort, privacy, and multiple occupancy to sociability, maternity, and piety. Focusing on how different species of domestic spaces were used and inhabited, from mansions and merchant houses to lodgings and farm house cabins, this book expands our understanding of house and home in Ireland in the long eighteenth century.
