Send us Fan MailWhat happens when you stop seeing retirement as an escape plan and start treating it like a leadership decision? In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I sit down with my friend Rich Lucey to talk about retirement planning, professional identity, consulting, networking as an introvert, and what it really means to create a purposeful next chapter after mid-career.Rich spent more than two decades leading alcohol and drug misuse prevention efforts across state and federal government. But instead of waiting until burnout forced a decision, he chose retirement at 62 with intention, strategy, and clarity about how he wanted to spend his time moving forward. If you are a mid-career professional thinking about retirement, considering a second career, exploring consulting, or wondering how to maintain purpose after leaving a long-term role, this conversation will help you think differently about your next move.We also dive into one of the biggest challenges many mid-career professionals face today: visibility. Rich openly shares why networking feels exhausting for introverts, how “forced socialization” drains energy, and why meaningful professional relationships are built through intentional conversations instead of trying to work an entire room. This episode also explores public speaking, professional legacy, leadership presence, and the mindset shift that helps you contribute more confidently in meetings, presentations, and workplace conversations. You will also hear an important discussion for parents and professionals about college campus alcohol and drug culture, the dangers of fake pills and illicit fentanyl, and why the first six weeks of college can be especially high risk.In this episode, we discuss:How to approach retirement planning with purpose and strategyBuilding a consulting business without creating another full-time jobWhy networking for introverts should focus on mutual benefit and intentional conversationsThe connection between theater training, leadership presence, and public speakingQuestions parents should ask colleges about alcohol and drug culturePractical guidance about fake pills and illicit fentanyl awarenessConnect with Rich LuceyLinkedIn Support the showIf this episode resonated with you and you want more support in how you SHOW UP for your career and life, I want to invite you to join the SHOW UP Leadership Lab. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this 'hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 15 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Today's episode begins with a fascinating conversation between Angela Jara and her guest Dorothy Lucey. Lucey is a veteran television broadcaster and Chapman University lecturer whose career spans decades in the Los Angeles market. The pair discuss Dorothy's journey from a small station in Scranton, Pennsylvania to working in the second-largest television market in the country. She reflects on the excitement of entertainment reporting, the realities of breaking into a fiercely competitive industry, and what she has taken away from the many memorable moments her career has brought her. Drawing on her experience both on-air and in the classroom, Dorothy offers a candid perspective on navigating different markets, seizing opportunities, and the role that hard work (and a little luck) play in a long broadcasting career. Rounding out our episode today Michaela Golik has the pleasure of speaking with Vivienne Ayres. Ayres works as a Social Media Assistant for Reese's Book Club at Hello Sunshine, a Los Angeles-based media company founded by Reese Witherspoon & Seth Rodsky in 2016. Vivienne reflects on her transition from college to a professional environment, explaining how Chapman's hands-on curriculum and internship experiences prepared her for the demands of a high-profile creative company. She offers a glimpse into a typical day at Hello Sunshine, and walks through how Reese's Book Club uses social media to spotlight up-and-coming female authors and build an engaged reading community. Beyond her current role, Vivienne speaks to her continued passion for documentary filmmaking, how she balances personal projects with professional life, and where she hopes her career will take her, closing with honest advice: network genuinely, and trust the process.

Megan chats with Maria Lucey about how she built a profitable food brand through YouTube alone and why long form video is one of the smartest growth moves food bloggers can make right now. Maria Lucey is a Registered Dietitian and content creator who launched her YouTube channel at the end of 2023 and grew it to over 44,000 subscribers in just over two years. Her channel focuses on long-form nutrition education and practical recipes that help people meet their health goals. Although she didn't have a blog when she started YouTube, Maria quickly recognized how the two platforms could complement each other and began building her blog soon after. Today, YouTube is her second-largest traffic source after Google and has helped her grow an email list of more than 6,000 subscribers, primarily through YouTube opt-ins, despite her blog still being relatively small. She monetizes through brand partnerships, YouTube and Mediavine ad revenue, and digital products. Maria is passionate about showing that anyone can start from zero - she began with no SEO or camera experience and built her platform through consistency and learning along the way. She also emphasizes how well blogging skills transfer to YouTube, and recently was flown to Los Angeles to collaborate with some of the platform's most established creators. What if you stopped chasing every platform and committed fully to one that actually builds trust, authority, and income? In this episode, Maria Lucey shares exactly how she grew a YouTube channel to nearly 50,000 subscribers in just over two years, monetized early, built a massive email list, and replaced her full time clinical job without relying on SEO or social media trends. This conversation breaks down what really works on YouTube for food creators and why consistency beats perfection every time. Key Topics Discussed: Future Consistency beats talent every time: Posting one video per week built momentum, skill, and confidence long before results showed up. YouTube rewards commitment not volume: Growth came from showing up weekly, not from posting more often or gaming the algorithm. Your first videos will be bad and that is the point: Improvement only happens through repetition and publishing before you feel ready. Monetization can happen faster than you think: Maria reached YouTube monetization within six months by focusing on watch time and value. Email lists convert extremely well from YouTube: Simple lead magnets tied directly to video topics drove consistent list growth. Packaging matters as much as content: Titles and thumbnails determine whether your video gets clicked at all. Curiosity outperforms keywords early on: Intrigue driven titles helped videos get discovered before shifting to SEO later. Connect with Maria Lucey Website | Instagram | YouTube

Eve gives an overview of current and future consumer trends where dairy can play a role. Functional foods, health and wellness, high protein foods, fermented and cultured foods, women's health, brain health, and aging are all part of the mix. (7:26)The panelists discuss the healthfulness of saturated fats, the resurgence of butter, milk's bioactive compounds, and how best to reach the public about the health benefits of dairy. (10:41)Eve talks about marketing to Gen Z consumers, who are motivated by novelty. How do we reimagine a food that's been here for thousands of years? What new ways can we talk about it? What ways can we optimize dairy science and research to show up in generative systems like ChatGPT? (20:34)The group then tackles the topic of lactose. Lactose and honey are the only two sugars not made by plants. Why is it lactose that is in the milk of mammals? Dr. Jiminez-Flores thinks lactose is a dark horse in dairy and we have much yet to discover about it. He notes that some milk oligosaccharides are not digested by babies, but are used by bacteria in the development of a healthy microbiome. Dr. Lucy notes that dairy also contains peptides that have been found to reduce hypertension. The group also delves into how dairy products can be part of preventative health care. (23:53)Do consumers perceive dairy products to be minimally processed? Eve explains that dairy is perceived as a clean, fresh food. Given the current trend to reduce additives and food dyes, she sees potential for dairy food science innovation in this area. Dr. Aldrich talks about the glycemic index of lactose-free milk. (38:13)The panelists agree that dairy has a great upcycling story to tell. Converting fiber into milk and meat and feeding non-human grade byproducts are just two examples. Eve notes that younger consumers care about sustainability, but there's a huge “say-do” gap: 76% of North American consumers identify as caring about conscious and sustainable practices, but less than 40% actually act on those values when making purchases. The panel also notes that whey is another great upcycling story. Dr. Jiminez-Flores emphasizes how important consumer trust in science and research is, and how we are currently experiencing a loss of that trust. (45:48)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. Castlehaven's reign as champions is over after St Finbarr's blasted a remarkable six goals in their Premier Senior Football Championship quarter-final clash. Steven Sherlock stitched three of them and the margin of victory now makes the Blues the favourites for Andy Scannell Cup. They're still in the hunt for the double too, with a semi-final against Sars on the horizon. There was no shortage of drama in the other football quarter-finals, Newcestown surviving a penalty shootout with Carrigaline and Ballincollig grabbing the last three scores against Duhallow to win by a point. Cork hurler Luke Meade and super subkeeper Christopher White were the Newcestown heroes while Dara Dorgan, Seán O'Neill and Tadhg O'Connell raised the white flags the Collig. There were some upsets in the lower grades, including Ballinora's victory over previously unbeaten Gabriel Rangers while Ilen Rovers, who have dropped down the tiers in recent years, defeated Mitchelstown despite the return of Mark Keane. Kanturk and Knocknagree produced an absolute belter in the SAFC, John Fintan Daly's side moving on after extra time. There were some brilliant individual displays. Sherlock hit a hat-trick and Ian Maguire was the Barrs' standout performer. Éire Óg beat Bishopstown and former Cork U20 All-Ireland winner Jack Murphy was immense. Adam Walsh Murphy got three points from wing-back for Valleys Rovers as they drew with Carbery Rangers in the PSFC relegation playoff. In the PIFC decider to avoid the drop, Pa Lucey nailed the key penalty as Macroom survived for the third year running after a 10-point comeback against Bandon. Lucey also clipped a remarkable five two-pointers from placed balls. We also pay tribute to Patrick Horgan after he called time on his Cork hurling career after 18 seasons. What does it mean for the Rebels in 2026, in terms of free-takers, attacking line-up and experience in the squad. There's a preview of next weekend's hurling semi-finals, toplined by Sars-Barrs and Blackrock-Midleton. In Senior A, Bride Rovers contest their fifth consecutive semi. Has their time finally come? Now in its third season, every week Éamonn Murphy will be joined by The Echo team, including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, Jack McKay, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. This is the VIC 4 VETS, Honored Veteran, during Veterans Month in America. SUBMITTED BY: Peter (Andre) Brown_____________________________________________________________ Good Morning, There are two Vets I would like to recognize via your Vic to Vets. First: Vipot Lopitakwong (pronounced Vee-pot La-pit-a-wong), Lance Corporal, United States Marine Corps. Nov. 4th 1995 to June 1 2015. I met Vipot in boot camp in 2014 and he quickly became my best friend and bother in the Marine Corps. Unfortunately he was killed in a car crash in 2015 a few days before we were to meet up for some fishing in the Gulf down in Texas. I mess him very much. Rest in peace my friend! Second: Corporal Jeffrey Lucey United States Marine Corps, a man I never met yet I is a touch stone when things get rough for me. A brother Marine Jeffrey was an Iraq war veteran. He served 5 months in country with the 6th Motor Transport Battalion. Unfortunately as is far to common, on June 22, 2004 Corporal Lucey took his own life at age 23. Tom Waits wrote and sang a song based on his letters and final note to his family. It is both a tribute and a haunting reminder of what our brave me and women go through to keep our Country free. The headlines are full of the cruel, unjust, illegal, unconstitutional, and costly treatment of immigrants by the Trump administration. Here's my 2019 conversation with SISTERS CONSTANCE TOUEY and JEANNETTE LUCEY. They met in 1984 when both were assigned to a parish K-8 school in inner city Philadelphia. Their book, DO IT BETTER: How the Kids of St. Francis de Sales Exceeded Everyone's Expectations tells the stories of their 30+ years as principal and 8th grade teacher as they educate and transform the lives of wave after wave of poor immigrant children. I'm proud to have written the book with them.

This episode of the Real Science Exchange podcast was recorded during a webinar from Balchem's Real Science Lecture Series.Throughout the last 30 years, the dairy industry has moved to producing highly concentrated versions of milk proteins. In cows' milk, about 80% of the protein is casein and 20% is in the serum or whey phase. These ratios vary by species. There are three major caseins in cows' milk: alpha-S-casein, beta-casein, and kappa-casein. The first two are rich in phosphate for calcium binding. Kappa-casein is critical in a micellar structure that allows these structures to stay suspended in the milk. (1:21)Whey proteins also differ by species. In cows' milk, about 50% of the whey protein is beta-lactoglobulin. It's rich in branched-chain amino acids, and it is not present in human milk so it is a focus of allergy research. Alpha-lactalbumin is found in all mammals and is a cofactor for lactose production. (10:34)Caseins and whey proteins are different from one another and are in completely different classes of proteins. From structure, to size, to amino acid content, to solubility; these two types of proteins are yin and yang. (11:51)When fluid milk or whey is concentrated by removing water, some sugars and other materials dissolve via evaporation or membrane filtration. It results in dried powders, milk protein concentrate, milk protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolates. Concentrates contain 80-85% protein and isolates contain more than 90% protein. (17:14)What's driving the current and probably future popularity of these dairy proteins? One, is their versatility in many food applications, and the other is the superior nutritional quality of the proteins. Nearly half of the milk protein concentrate use is for mainstream nutrition and sports beverages. Similar trends have been observed for whey protein isolates. (20:05)Dairy proteins are very rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) like leucine. BCAAs help initiate protein synthesis, are important for muscle recovery, help with weight loss by maintaining blood glucose levels, are synergistic with exercise, and can promote healthy aging. Dr. Lucey gives several different examples of products utilizing dairy proteins. He predicts that the increased focus on nutrition products, interest in isolating individual proteins and improving export opportunities will continue to drive demand for dairy proteins in the future. (27:21)All of the main milk proteins have genetic variants, which are minor amino acid differences in the same protein. Variants occur at different frequencies among breeds. Beta-casein has two variants, A1 and A2. There is one amino acid difference out of 209 total amino acids, located at position 67 where a histidine is found in variant A1 and a proline is found in variant A2. When histidine is present, the beta-casein is prone to cleavage at position 67, creating a fragment called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7). When proline is present, it hinders the cleavage of casein at position 67. BCM-7 is an exogenous opioid peptide with the potential to elicit opioid activity on a range of tissues and organs. It's known as a “bioactive peptide” and some others from milk and cheese have been implicated as anti-hypertensive. (35:26)In the late 1990s, some researchers claimed that A1 milk was implicated in diabetes, coronary heart disease, autism, and schizophrenia. Subsequent reviews and investigations by significant international bodies found no evidence of these claims. (40:34)In closing, Dr. Lucey answers questions from the webinar audience. He talks about the potential of breeding cows customized for the production of minor milk components, milk components as renewable bio-plastics, and the superiority of milk proteins compared to plant proteins. Did you know that the United States is one of the least trained and certified HVAC industries in the modern world? Many countries require thousands of hours of training as well as completing a nationally recognized certification. Here in the United States it varies by state and even city. Here in my home state of Indiana there is no state-level HVAC license, but you are required as a landscaper.....let that sink in. Take 25 and check out this interesting perspective from Aidan Lucey, a journeyman refrigeration mechanic who understands apprenticeships of different continents.

As we enter the busy part of the XC season, we award the next batch of D3 Glory Days Runner of the Week Awards. For the first time in this young award, the runners hail from the same college. Week 4 winners are John Lucey and Genna Girard from Williams College. After winning the Little 3 Championship last weekend, John Lucey continued his winning ways in 2023. This time, he crossed the line first at his home invite: Purple Valley. Once a bigger invite, Purple Valley still attracts strong team including last year's national champs: MIT. Up front, Lucey led his teammates to a 1-2-3 victory which helped pave the way for an early season victory over MIT. Lucey knows where they're at in the season but gains confidence from this individual and team victories. Lucey was an All-American last year and has goal to improve upon his 18th place finish. Genna Girard officially opened her 2023 season with a commanding victory. With her win by almost a minute, Girard was excited to get back to racing. She suffered an injury during the indoor track season and wasn't able to race Outdoors. Girard wasn't sure what to expect in this first race and was aiming to keep it a controlled effort. And she did just that. With her only competition coming from MIT, Girard was able to pull away from them early and never looked back. Girard brings a great perspective on how to handle injuries. In the episode, she goes into how she has grown as a runner as she reflects on her tendencies earlier in college. Girard is excited to be back healthy and running with her teammates. She was an All-American in XC back in 2021 and after missing a top 40 spot last year, she has her eyes set on that recognition again. How to Support D3 Glory Days: D3 Glory Days Venmo.
