Send us a Text Message. On this weeks episode, we discuss King Crimson's 1969 debut: In the Court of the Crimson King. Not only is In the Court of the Crimson King regarded as one of the greatest and most influential progressive rock (or prog rock) albums of all time, it is considered by many to be the album that defined the genre. Like all prog rock musicians, Robert Fripp, Greg Lake, Micheal Giles, and Ian McDonald all know their way around their instruments.   But what makes King Crimson stand out from those they would influence, and what makes this album worthy of a listen, is that the band never lost the sight of what made a song a song; they weren't interested in excessive musicianship over musicality, and most of In the Court of the Crimson King is hauntingly beautiful. Based on the band's live performances, established artists such as Pete Townsend and Jimi Hendrix sung the band's praises before the album was ever released. Their performance in front of an estimated 500,00 people in Hyde Park on a bill with the Rolling Stones in July 1969 reinforced that King Crimson was a band to watch.  When In the Court of the Crimson King was release later that year, songs like title track and "21st Century Schizoid Man" laid down the foundational building blocks for progressive rock for years to come, and cemented King Crimson as one of the most influential bands to come out of the 1960s.  It's never been easier to call 512-766-8495Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Progressive music is a terrible name for a genre, isn't it? If we take the dictionary definition (“happening or developing gradually or in stages”), prog doesn't really live up to that. Instead, it's a series of long winded nerdy time signatures and modes: ideas repeated since the late 1960s. No, you stop being so petty minded. This week, we tackle the prickly subject of only needing one album from a band. Some bands, you don't need an entire album of, with others, you're missing a journey. But, what about that band that's incredible for an album, and nothing else nears it again? Of course, this is all tackled in a scatological-friendly approach. As it should be, right? And Sam reveals his deep love for documentaries on progressive bands and his deep mistrust of progressive bands actual output. Leading us onto another subject: what bands would be better left as documentaries? ### Riffs of the week #### Dr Sam's Riff - Fantastic Negrito - In My Head (opening) #### Andrew's Riff - John Kongos - He's gonna step on you again (2:45) ### Dr Sam's track choices 1. Exposure - The Album* Before we even get started, massive respect is due to Eric Tamm, whose exhaustive work “Robert Fripp - From King Crimson to Guitar Craft” is available online HERE and was a big help in preparing this episode. As we explain in more detail, there are several versions of this album, but this is basically what the listener was presented with in 1979About the lyricist on Exposure, Discogs has this to say:* Joanna WaltonReal Name: Joan Sheree LichtensteinAmerican poet, born 26 December 1942 in New York, New York, New York. Lyricist and one-time girlfriend of Robert Fripp. In 1982, she married George L. Sheanshang. She was killed on 21 December 1988 in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, U.K.In the liner notes of the Roches 1989 album, Speak, Terre Roche wrote “to the memory” of Walton, with whom she had worked on Robert Fripp's 1979 album, Exposure. HERE is another Fripp/Walton collaboration* * It's worth heading over to YouTube for this half-hour video of Fripp being interviewed on something called “Boffomondo” in the middle of his tour promoting ExposureWhat Came Before…The later CD edit has the applause at the end of 21st Century Schizoid Man fading out gently; for the full force of the door being slammed in the audiences face, you have to go back to the vinyl version……but Fripp had already been collaborating with Brian Eno. This is one of Tom's Favourites - …I think we all know about the David Bowie stuff, but did you know about this?…and everybody knows the second Peter Gabriel album, but had you heard this?…or even this? …which brings us to this. Fripp joins Blondie in a live performance of Donna Summer's I Feel Love, which the best disco song ever. This was to be on Exposure but … record labels.…And what came after…The Promotional Tour…which is the bit that really interests us. Armed with a farcically small amount of money from the record company, the “Small Intelligent Mobile Unit” set off with a guitar and two tape recorders to promote his new album by playing music that wasn't on the album in a selection of unusual venues…We both really love Hainbach, so here he is demonstrating how to do Frippertonics in the comfort of your own home.…and here's a breathless reaction videoIt's about time that the League of Gentlemen album was re-issuedSubscribe to Gas GiantsRSS https://api.substack.com/feed/podcast/311033.rss This is a public episode. By taking influences from a wide range of genres, King Crimson invented their own kind of music which was so hard to place at the time. They weren't ordinary rockers, they were far from jazz, and by no means were they classical. Their dark and challenging outlook invented progressive rock. Protesting the Vietnam war, 21st Century Schizoid Man threw the music world a curveball it didn't know how to catch, but became an important element in heavy metal.

In this episode of "Reel to Reel," Nina and Will take a deep dive into the meteoric rise of streaming in the 2010s — and what it means for music, TV and film. Topics discussed include the precarious state of movie theaters, the power of algorithms, the danger of treating Spotify like an endless archive, and the importance of non-digital preservation in the wake of events like the Universal Studios warehouse fire. This is the Department of Tangents special joy of Halloween and horror episode with Lamont Price. I love Halloween, and so does Price. And that's really the only inspiration for this episode. Price is an incredibly entertaining human being, so we sat down with no real notes and not much of an agenda other than to discuss why we love the holiday, horror movies and books, what scares us and what doesn't. We talked about trick or treating as kids, how that was part of the first taste of independence you get as a kid. And we go through all the major creeps and spooks to weigh in on how and why they scare us – ghosts, zombies, werewolves, vampires, serial killers, aliens.    To prepare for the episode, we went to a couple of Halloween stores before we taped. You can watch Price's Instagram to see if any of the videos from those visits pop up. Until then, enjoy Price rocking out as Slimer on his Twitter page. Ladies, why won't you let me love you? pic.twitter.com/YhBvP7JFqo— Lamont Price (@LPizzle) October 16, 2019     Look for his "Lamont's Boston" segments on nbcboston.com, and find him on Twitter under @lpizzle and on Instagram under @lpizzle12, and on his site at lamontpricelive.com.   Our featured track this week is “Collector of Things,” the first track from the new Even Twice album, This Is Boomerang. Believe it or not, Even Twice is just two guys – drummer/singer Pat O'Shea and bassist/singer Bob Hait. They make a beautiful rock and roll racket together, and for a two-instrument band, they cover a lot of different styles on Boomerang. There is a driving, punk edged sound at the heart of it. But sometimes it sounds like sludgy prog rock a la King Crimson's “20th Century Schizoid Man.” Sometimes, as on “Collector of Things,” it sounds like 60s garage rock, rough around the edges but with a solid melodic center. You can find the new album on Spotify or better yet, buy it on BandCamp. Find them on Twitter under @EvenTwice, and look them up on Facebook. This is “Collector of Things” off of This Is Boomerang by Even Twice.

Experimental music ensemble Zero Times Everything will be releasing their eagerly anticipated new album “Sonic Cinema” on April 21, 2017! Avant-garde post-industrial pre-cambrian pan-ethnic serial noise proto-punk neocortex music. It lives at the intersection of “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” and Autechre, mixing glitchcore, ambient, and progressive rock. Says band member Richard Sylvarnes, “In film making it is critical to create a sense of space; a world wholly imaginary that we can enter completely and without reservation. That is the first critical step in the creative process of Zero Times Everything. We strive to create worlds with sounds for a film that is either real or imagined. Hence the title: ‘Sonic Cinema’. Although largely an instrumental recording there are passages of spoken texts; either through a disembodied heroine’s chant from a 1930’s gangster film, robot voices reciting Marxist texts, a child’s recitation of ‘Twenty-first Century Schizoid Man’, to a chorus of angry protesters whose calls against war resemble a liturgical chant. The totality of these texts describe a malignant world within the throes of a breathless apocalypse. And, yet, the record ends on a celestial note – a treated, improvised guitar loop – that inspires hope and resilience within the storm.”

Vocalist, musician and producer, Greg Lake is one of the most prominent and popular musicians in the world and has often been described as having the voice of a generation. He first won worldwide acclaim as lead vocalist, bass guitarist and producer when together with Robert Fripp he formed King Crimson. Their first album, In Court of the Crimson King, co-produced by Greg, featured the iconic song "21st Century Schizoid Man." King Crimson pioneered progressive rock and paved the way for famous bands that followed, including Yes and Genesis all the way through to bands such as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and countless others. Fripp and Lake met when they shared the same Dorset guitar teacher who taught an expansive range of music including classical pieces by Paganini and post war classics. Lake also listened to early American rock and roll and was inspired by everything he heard, from Elvis to classical. Greg says "There is a common thread throughout all the music. The forms may be different, but each one to some degree draws upon inspiration from the past. I am as proud to have been as influenced by people like Elvis and Little Richard as I am by composers like Copeland and Prokofiev and I'm honoured when other musicians regard me as one of their inspirations." Slacker chats about the new, Anthology. #Greglake.com @GregLakeWebsite #slackermorningshow101thefox

King Crimson's live 21st Century Schizoid Man begins, and then it's all a guitar freak out, almost all from Eric Clapton in stages from Cream to cheese, and a lot of Dominoes. William F. Buckley takes on the hippies on Firing Line in 1969, with guests Jack Kerouac and Ed Sanders of the Fugs, but it's mostly Mr. Clapton's guitar freak out. 3 Hours.
