Kazim Rashid is an artist, manager, and creative director based in Berlin and London.  I found out about him through my good friend David Okumu who is our magical, mutual connection. Aside from his work as a manager, Kazim is chief creative officer at Resident Advisor, the world's largest and most influential electronic music platform.  His work often focuses on collaborating with artists, record labels, and brands to help them achieve their goals in the music industry. We get into the current state of things for artists navigating the changing tides of music commerce. Strap in!   Music for this episode comes from a chap I met in Berlin thanks to Hainbach. Mr Ayjay Nils plays Viola in the Berlin Phil and is a great improviser :) A rare combo! He's also super into weird and wonderful electronic music which is featured in this show. It's all from an upcoming album Here's his Bandcamp to check the action! https://ayjaynils.bandcamp.com

Today, the Spotlight shines On Berlin-based electronic music composer and performer Hainbach.I have come to view Hainbach as much an archeologist or audio specimen collector as he is a musician. While he makes beautiful music and soundscapes, they are often showcase pieces for the devices he works on, which include not only vintage and rare modular synthesizers but also tape machines, test equipment, and other industrial machinery. A particular highlight of his work is his YouTube channel, where Hainbach brings experimental music techniques and the history of electronic music to a wider audience, frequently displaying how he gets usable sounds from these forgotten devices. As músicas deste episódio são "Thinking Back", de Max Surla, "Blood Kiss", do Hainbach, e "Funeral in Sinaloa", de Jimena Contreras. Exposure - The Album* Before we even get started, massive respect is due to Eric Tamm, whose exhaustive work “Robert Fripp - From King Crimson to Guitar Craft” is available online HERE and was a big help in preparing this episode. As we explain in more detail, there are several versions of this album, but this is basically what the listener was presented with in 1979About the lyricist on Exposure, Discogs has this to say:* Joanna WaltonReal Name: Joan Sheree LichtensteinAmerican poet, born 26 December 1942 in New York, New York, New York. Lyricist and one-time girlfriend of Robert Fripp. In 1982, she married George L. Sheanshang. She was killed on 21 December 1988 in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, U.K.In the liner notes of the Roches 1989 album, Speak, Terre Roche wrote “to the memory” of Walton, with whom she had worked on Robert Fripp's 1979 album, Exposure. HERE is another Fripp/Walton collaboration* * It's worth heading over to YouTube for this half-hour video of Fripp being interviewed on something called “Boffomondo” in the middle of his tour promoting ExposureWhat Came Before…The later CD edit has the applause at the end of 21st Century Schizoid Man fading out gently; for the full force of the door being slammed in the audiences face, you have to go back to the vinyl version……but Fripp had already been collaborating with Brian Eno. This is one of Tom's Favourites - …I think we all know about the David Bowie stuff, but did you know about this?…and everybody knows the second Peter Gabriel album, but had you heard this?…or even this? …which brings us to this. Fripp joins Blondie in a live performance of Donna Summer's I Feel Love, which the best disco song ever. This was to be on Exposure but … record labels.…And what came after…The Promotional Tour…which is the bit that really interests us. Armed with a farcically small amount of money from the record company, the “Small Intelligent Mobile Unit” set off with a guitar and two tape recorders to promote his new album by playing music that wasn't on the album in a selection of unusual venues…We both really love Hainbach, so here he is demonstrating how to do Frippertonics in the comfort of your own home.…and here's a breathless reaction videoIt's about time that the League of Gentlemen album was re-issuedSubscribe to Gas GiantsRSS https://api.substack.com/feed/podcast/311033.rss This is a public episode. This time with a fireside ramble twixt myself and the legend that is Dj Shadow as we celebrate his new LP "Action Adventure" Welcome.  I hope this finds you in good health and merry mood as the season sheds it's joy upon you. If joy is in short supply and the period feels claustrophobic and the family is doing your head in then I trust yule be able to duck out for a spell and use this as an escape pod. Who am I rambling with on the sonic sleigh? Dj Shadow really needs no Endroducing but in case you're not hip to his MPC60 masterpiece from 1996 you MUST inhale that now. What a record. I recall having both of my Christmas stockings blown off by this LP and it's humbling to be sat on a zoom with the chap now.  Such is the mystery of the digital time ghosts.  Twas a mighty pleasure to chew the cud with such a master of the chops. Hainbach must be such a busy man! Just today I received a post on his patreon that he uploaded to Medium where he eloquently described the history and character of the electronic music company Vermona that started in the GDR and now lives on. It was a review of sorts of the DRM drum machine from 1987 but he surrounded that feature with some wonderful insights into the company's history whilst painting a picture of former East Germany. He put all this together after having made a highly compelling video on the same subject for his now legendary youtube channel where so many of us find ourselves happily gazing in on his wild sonic adventures. I've learnt so much from him over the years and feel a undeniable connection with him. I certainly share his passion for beguiling tone and that marveling at human inventiveness and endeavor. A tremendous story teller and tireless adventurer, we could have discussed any number of things. There was absolutely no plan to this chat and you're going to hear what is essentially our first phone call. Yes there's Ample deep dives a tangents a go go. It was a great pleasure to speak with this fountain of knowledge. It gives me great pleasure to welcome on to the show Hainbach Nitty 109 is all about Tape Delay. I put the new Echofix EFX3 through its paces in some odd ways! This nitty is also a rare VIDEO nitty. Link to that here I have an affiliate link to the Echofix machine I used here or for the rack version here buying a unit from that link helps the channel :) thanks! I've known this multi platinum renaissance man for some time now and I could tell, when we worked on the Lianne La Havas song “Green and Gold” that his skills went WAY beyond the technical. I can safely say that were it not for his expert manner in the room, that song never would have made it. Those are the kind of experiences that stay with you. It came as no surprise to later learn he's worked on records by Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Mary J. Blige, Common, The Strokes, Robert Glasper, and Erykah Badu. Yep he's rather nasty at mixing and producing. He's also taken a large role in producing work by badass bands like Battles and Die Antwoord. We nerd dive into a wide pool of topics from coffee to the holiest of Mics.. He has one in his possession that has THE most incredible back story. Chris is a master of the studio both in terms of the precise and fast execution of the all important technical stuff to the refined and nuanced energy required to draw out the best in musicians. Needless to say I'm mightily chuffed to have him grace the show :) ______________ In the nitty I dive into the instant joys of the Expert Sleepers app called CROSSFADE LOOP SYNTH Absolutely wicked! Hainbach spoke about how he likes to explore gear, his creative process, and some more philosophical ideas about art and inspiration.  Listen on iTunes or Stitcher or Google Play or Spotify; watch on YouTube Show Notes: Hainbachmusik.com - The internet home for Hainbach's work. About: Half Danish and half Hong Kong Chinese, Martin Yam Møller enjoys large and jarring contrasts. He composes music in many genres, from lyrically ironic lofi-folk-pop to instrumental soundscape ambient music, which is represented in his DataCult Audio episode. He draws Inspiration a range of sources, from the classics Beatles and Boards of Canada to instagram musicians Hainbach and R Beny. The tools he uses to make music can be both old and slightly broken 4-track cassette recorders or the latest and greatest VSTi plugin or semi-modular synths. Even acoustic guitars have their place in his compositions, played both traditionally or with chopsticks and an eBow. When inspiration wanes, he makes sample packs and releases it through his email list, which can be signed up for on his website: http://martinyammoller.com/ DataCultAudio Ep.128 music composed and recorded by Martin Yam Møller sept 2019 Extra tape music for this release contributed by Rasmus Rune Larsen. Nitpicky_Picnic de The Whole Other.

POOLcast 038 - Hainbach Happy new year to everybody. The POOL Berlin wishes every single one of you health, safety, joy and love. No matter where the journey will take you, you have the power to make the most of it. Like Theodore Roosevelt once said: "Believe you can and you're halfway there." The next chapter in our journey takes us deep into the realm of analog noises and magnetic fields. We invited Hainbach to create the first episode of POOLcast in 2019. Hainbach is known as musician, music technologist and YouTuber and provides us with a selection of unreleased material. In his pieces he mangles aggregators, transforms vivid rhythms to shaking grooves and mutates playful melodies to mesmerizing scapes. Good foundation for a proper winter couch voyage. Get a cup of bliss and enjoy. - https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-038-hainbach https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-038-hainbach https://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/ - Hainbach https://www.hainbach.com https://soundcloud.com/hainbach https://www.facebook.com/hainbachmusik/ https://www.youtube.com/user/Hainbach101 https://www.instagram.com/hainbach101/ https://twitter.com/Hainbach101 - The POOL Berlin https://thepoolberlin.de https://facebook.com/poolcastberlin/ https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/ https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/ https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/ https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/

Welcome to another LA out and about pod, this time with the wonder that is Bobby Krlic Aka The Haxan Cloak. We fall into a distorted time line as we chew the mighty cud sat humbly outside his calm studio in Silverlake. You'll hear the passings by of local wildlife faintly muttering as we pontificate the meaning of sound and have a good old fashioned ramble!  From Sludge to Hollywood From Laptops on a Brick to Bjork and Atticus Ross  Bobby's story is the shit!  I'm very happy to have made his acquaintance and I trust you'll be equally chuffed Let's chat!   Today's nitty sees Me paying homage to the work of sound artist and tape master Scott campbell who makes superb tape machine mods and sweet music! Find him on the gram here: @ondemagnetique @scttcmpbll This nitty is also inspired by the rather badass HAINBACH https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeovElJP0n0i8ADaPsRSd8g   And in particular this tape loop demo (so helpful!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYz2J4DmxVA YES! Music for EP 33 comes from Mischa Lively. An active member on the pod and a great producer.  Super happy to feature his music this time!
