This story was written by Brian Wise for the September-October 2023 issue of Strings magazine and is read by Megan Westberg, Editor. Aleksey Igudesman, the violinist half of comedy duo Igudesman & Joo, is no fan of the ritualized behaviors of classical performance. “Let's be honest—the whole situation is ridiculous,” he says. “If aliens came down and went into the concert hall, they'd see people walking out dressed like penguins. People bow solemnly and don't speak. All these weird rituals and self-righteous looks. The music they would get—the music is passionate, funny, fun, diverse. But the whole thing around it?”'
#884 - Igudesman & Joo The Igudesman & Joo Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Look at me, I'm already asking you questions. But here's one more: why did classical music get so wrapped up with stuffiness? Seriously. Why not inject some light-heartedness into classical music? If you're agreeing with us, check this out. You're going to hear classical music duo Igudesman & Joo give a humorous interview about their concerts. They play classical music, but no…they don't take themselves too seriously. "Rette die Welt!" So lautet die neue Mission des Künstlerduos Igudesman & Joo. Mit musikalischen Sketchen touren Igudesman & Joo seit Jahren erfolgreich um den Globus. Nun haben Geiger Aleksey Igudesman und Pianist Hyung-ki Joo ein Buch geschrieben. Wie sie auf diese Weise die Welt retten wollen, das erklären sie Falk Häfner im Interview.
Aleksey Igudesman and Hyung-ki Joo make up the classical music comedy duo, Igudesman and Joo. And though they will crack you up with their performances (which you can watch on their YouTube channel along with millions of other viewers), when they talk about why they do what they do, the two musicians become surprisingly serious. They firmly believe that classical music was always meant to be fun. In this episode, they talk about the history of humor in classical music (even Beethoven was funny!), the forces that conspired to make it stuffy, and what they're doing to change that, including their upcoming performance, The Clone, with Yuja Wang. Music in this episode: Special thanks to Todd Reynolds for his music, Taskforce: Farmlab from Outerbourough.
Join conductor and host Joshua Weilerstein as he welcomes violinist, composer, comedian, actor, and renaissance man Aleksey Igudesman of the classical music comedy duo Igudesman and Joo, for a discussion of modern classical music, programming, audiences, comedy, plus his new app, Music Traveler! Would someone Think of the Children? They need some gaming skills. Justin, Cole, Ethan, Christina, and newcomer, Alex, get our Raising Gamers Guide started by talking through essential gaming skills and their associated games. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We return to our roots with the editorial that started it all, Think of the Children. The Cursed are passionate about relaying the best game experiences possible to the next generation, and that all starts with laying the foundation of identifying gaming skills. Alex, streetalchemist, joins us for the first time on the podcast and we listen to the creepy origin story of how he learned to game in a van. In our Threesomes, we learn which show is ideal for bringing those happy people in your life back to down to earth. Our On the Spot question dives into our gaming skills by asking – What was the first gaming accomplishment you remember bragging about? Even though we’re not sure if anyone can actually brag about beating Body Harvest. Then, it’s time to start listing off some skills so we dig into the history books to find the games that stand out as good introductions to the skills that stand out to us. The list from our discussion is below and we look forward to revising it in future episodes, but welcome any feedback to help us get this list as solid as possible. Finally, we give shout outs to our patient significant others, pat ourselves on the back, and applaud the recent work of Twisted Pixel.
