Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Ultima IV. We talk about the boat, we talk about dungeons (a tiny bit), we deep dive into NPCs and consequences, we talk about the quests and how everything is in the world, and answer some listener email. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: More of Ultima IV (Much more, in B's case) Issues covered: revisiting locations and finding new things, a game that does a lot with a little, everything existing in the world, getting to know the world, NPCs sharing sprites and being hard to remember, getting a ship and fighting your way on, broadside combat, dying to a waterspout, wanting to search the oceans, badly simulating tacking, riding a horse, being interrupted in any location, trying to replicate the tabletop experience, feeling like a "yes" game, whether what you do matters, can you be a thief, watering down a morality system, having a limited palette of options at any one time, layering frosting, taking out the friction and icky feeling, the niche audience of some RPGs, taking elements from older games and bringing them into modern games, asking questions of the player who is also the character, avoiding the uncanny valley, an aside into adventure mode, the horseshoe effect on NPCs, reaching the limits of what the human brain can contemplate, an aside into Dunbar's number, facing the same challenges, chunking chapters, feeling the anxiety of there being too much, coalescing your notes from time to time, the telescope moment and seeing the map, the lack of loot, preparing to do things, validating your assumptions, having to revisit everywhere, the friction of Pikmin, getting good controllers, handheld mode, the Wavebird, bouncing off character creation, character creation we've liked, wanting a story to wrap around a more specific character, the generic hero, having fun with a character creator, a freeing character creator. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Final Fantasy (series), Gold Box (series), Eye of the Beholder, Outer Wilds, The Witcher (series), Beowulf, Dungeons & Dragons, Wizardry (series), BioWare, Mass Effect, BioShock, Dishonored, CD Project Red, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate III, Thief, Robin Hood, VtM Bloodlines, Undertale, Dark Souls, Land of the Lost, Dwarf Fortress, Planescape: Torment, Metroid / Castlevania, Richard Garriott, Sasha, Pikmin, Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, Switch, PlayStation, Analog Pocket, Ashton Herrmann, Monkey Island, Wing Commander, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Bethesda Game Studios, Blizzard, World of Warcraft, Diablo (series), Metal Gear Solid V, Hideo Kojima, Saint's Row IV, Call of Cthulhu, Asher, Cuphead, KyleAndError, Hitman, FFSZilla, MGS: VR Missions, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  Note: Because Ultima IV has very little music to speak of, I will be substituting music from later in the series in the openings to these episodes TTDS: 38:30 Links: Majuular Ultima IV video recommended by Chris  Next time: Finish Ultima IV Twitch: timlongojr and twinsunscorp YouTube Discord  DevGameClub@gmail.com

Composer Ken Allen shaped the soundscape of an entire Sierra era, from Space Quest to Kings Quest, and that unmistakable Sierra logo fanfare burned into every retro-gamer's brain. Now he's back with a full new soundtrack for SpaceVenture, and we go deep into how it all came together. In this episode, Ken walks through the craft behind his new score, the evolution from MT-32 to modern orchestral libraries, the stories behind iconic Sierra tracks, the surprising inspirations for SpaceVenture's music, and what it's like to reunite with the Two Guys from Andromeda after decades. Expect anecdotes, technical insight, nostalgia, and plenty of behind-the-scenes lore from one of the genre's defining composers. Mangia! Some corrections. - Beats Per Minute (not beats per second - that wouldbe crazy). - Composer for Silent Running was Peter Schickle, not Jerry Goldsmith. - Kazoo Orchestra is on the 2001 Theme and synth was used Blue Danube. Escuchar audio

The Witching Hour is upon us in this Halloween special, it's time to pull up a rickety, mouldy stool at the near-empty pub, the Brush, Nose and Bone. In this episode, we're joined by a master of horror, Keith Dozois of USB Escape to discuss all things horror in escape rooms. How does horror affect puzzles? What are our best (and worst) experiences with horror? And how do you make horror good in an escape room? As always, here are your recommendations for this month. Jamie - Ice Nine Kills (band), a metalcore whose recent output has been centred around iconic horror films, and was a big inspiration for Jamie's episode this arc. Mairi - Strange Jigsaws (game by fleb), a short digital puzzle game about solving 50 or so rather strange jigsaws. The prequel (20 Small Mazes) is free, if you want to see what sort of thing you're getting yourself into. Jon - Never Let Me Go (novel by Kazuo Ishiguro), a slow gentle book about a trio of young folks in the British countryside but they attend a very unusual school and are on an unusual life trajectory. Keith - Scarlet Envelope for their fantastic puzzle games (yay), and Curios' Albrecht Manor Letters, an epistolary horror experience through writing letters. Two fantastic Canada-based game creators. Inside Shadows of the Afterland with Rubén López

This week on the Classic Gamers Guild Podcast, we step into the afterlife, but not the peaceful kind. Anna, one half of the CGG Podcast, sits down with Rubén López, one half of Aruma Studios, to talk about their upcoming point-and-click adventure Shadows of the Afterland. If their debut Intruder in Antiquonia was about memory and resisting modernity, this one's about being dead before you're even born, and trying to change your destiny. Rubén pulls back the curtain on designing a supernatural murder mystery set in 1960s Madrid, building an afterlife where bureaucracy still reigns, and giving players control of so many unique characters through a tactical possession mechanic. We dig into how Galician folklore seeps into the game's design, what it takes to rebuild an entire custom engine from scratch, and why full voice acting is now part of the plan. From puzzle design philosophy to the realities of running a two-person studio, this conversation is a deep dive into ambitious indie development, ghostly storytelling, and the fine art of making possession both strategic and fun. Plus, hear about the game's brand-new demo update, massive performance boosts, and plans for release on PC and Nintendo Switch. Play our adventure game! The Phantom Fellows is out now! This week, Anna runs a solo mission straight into the fog, Fogtown, that is. She's joined by Sean Parker, the puppet-wrangling, genre-bending mastermind behind Fogtown, the only detective story brave enough to ask: what if a puppet version of Sherlock Holmes had imposter syndrome, a spatula sword, and a head that occasionally falls off? We talk about how the pandemic turned a scrappy puppet TV show idea into a fully modular FMV game with real performances, rotating virtual sets, and actors from Phantasmagoria, Disco Elysium, and Contradiction. Sean spills the tea on a mystery publisher who ghosted harder than a Tinder date, how to keep a puppet's head attached during a fight scene, and why FMV deserves a weirder, brighter comeback. Plus: a tribute to the irreplaceable Roberta Vaughan, who championed lovely indie projects like Fogtown long before the rest of us caught on. Wishlist A Rum Case In Fogtown! This week Paul played Sierra's black sheep, what some call the rite, or maybe right, of passage for the clinically obsessed adventure gamer... it's Codename: Iceman. He's gonna walk you through it so you don't have to play it, while switching vehemently between 'you should play it' and 'you absolutely should not'- it's quite a rollercoster of confused emotions and misguided angst. Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones und Baphomets Fluch kannten damals beinahe alle Gamer. The Adventures of Bryan Scott veröffentlichen.
