Businessman John Wieland, author of Uncommon Threads, talks with Wayne Shepherd about his story of faith and the lessons he's learned about faith, family, and business. (click for more) You'll find the book Uncommon Threads here.John Wieland Program Notes:Background & BusinessCEO of MH Equipment (material handling/forklift company in Illinois).President of His First Foundation.Took over MH Equipment in 1994 when it was nearly bankrupt; no entrepreneurial or mechanical background.Business grew during a strong economy; attributes success to God's grace, not personal ability.Rejects the idea of “self-made men” – too many factors are beyond human control.Faith JourneyGrew up in church in Jerseyville, Illinois, but not a believer; thought attending church was “doing God a favor.”Encountered Scripture in college (Matthew 7 – narrow vs. wide gate) and realized he was outside God's kingdom.Surrendered to Christ as a sophomore in college, influenced by Navigators ministry (discipleship & scripture memorization).Family StoryMarried to Julie.Together they adopted four children (three daughters, one son). Adoptions came through providential circumstances, often through a doctor friend. Son Josiah is biracial, blind in one eye, and struggled with asthma as a child. Became a standout athlete in soccer and basketball.Lesson: God's blessings shouldn't be limited by our fears or expectations.Abortion ExperienceIn high school, got a girl pregnant and encouraged an abortion.Years later, reconnected for his book Uncommon Threads. She recalled the trauma vividly: pain, emptiness, regret, counting the lost child as her oldest.Wieland was convicted of his selfishness.Story included in the book became a powerful pro-life testimony.Impact: one reader chose not to abort after reading his story; another reconciled with a former partner after decades.Parenting LessonsKey principle: “Prepare the child for the road, don't prepare the road for the child.”Don't shield children from hardship; let challenges build character.Emphasize character over happiness (happiness = temporary “happenings”).When disciplining, do it for the child's benefit, not as punishment or out of anger. His own failures as a youth made him more patient with his kids' mistakes.Book: Uncommon ThreadsDivided into themes of family, business, and faith.Transparent and vulnerable, sharing both failures and successes.Written to encourage reflection, movement, and growth in readers' spiritual, family, and professional lives.Send your support for FIRST PERSON to the Far East Broadcasting Company:FEBC National Processing Center Far East Broadcasting CompanyP.O. In this deeply moving and inspiring episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Sophie Pierce, a 32-year-old social worker from Pembrokeshire, West Wales, who made history in March 2025 as the first person with Cystic Fibrosis to row an ocean. Diagnosed at just 3 months old, Sophie has lived with the challenges of a genetic condition that affects her lungs and digestive system and once carried a life expectancy of under 30 years. But Sophie's story is not defined by limitation—it's a bold testament to resilience, courage, and the power of hope. From working in fostering services to hiking the Welsh coast with her dogs, swimming in cold water, and sleeping in her campervan—Sophie has never shied away from living life on her terms. In this episode, she opens up about the life-changing impact of the Kaftrio drug trial, how she overcame mental health struggles, and what it truly meant to embrace life beyond the horizon by rowing across the Atlantic. She shares the highs and lows of the row: the months of preparation, team dynamics, magical moments at sea, and how it feels to return to "normal life" after an extraordinary adventure. Sophie's message is powerful and universal—you are capable of so much more than you think. If you're looking for inspiration, perspective, and an honest exploration of living—and thriving—with a life-limiting condition, this episode is not to be missed. Hal Habecker of Finishing Well Ministries, joins Wayne Shepherd to talk about encouraging seniors to actively pursue and fulfill God's calling. (click for more) Website: https://www.finishingwellministries.orgInterview notes:Background & Faith JourneyBorn in Hershey, PA, one of six children in a farming family.Came to Christ at age 6 in an independent Bible church.Early fascination with older people, shaped by the death of his childhood pastor.Active Christian leader in youth (campus life, Bible study).Studied at Taylor University; initially interested in politics inspired by Mark Hatfield.Mission trip to Haiti → encouraged to attend Dallas Theological Seminary.Married while in seminary; mentored by Howard Hendricks, who redirected him from politics to pastoral ministry.Ministry CareerOrdained at First Baptist Dallas under W.A. Criswell.Worked with physicians/dentists, leading to involvement with the Christian Medical Society (served as national director for 15 years).Pastored a Dallas church for 21 years.Founded Finishing Well Ministries about 10 years ago to encourage seniors to live purposefully for Christ.Calling & Focus on AgingIn his 50s became aware of how seniors often feel alienated or insignificant in culture and church.Passion to affirm the value of aging people in God's plan.Inspired by Psalm 90:12 (“teach us to number our days”) and Robert Browning's poem “Grow Old Along with Me.”Believes every decade can be the most influential, especially the later years.Emphasis: last words are lasting words – the legacy of one's final years matters deeply.Key Teachings – Seven Essentials for Living & Finishing WellNever stop growing in knowledge of Christ.Never stop building friendships—combat isolation.Never stop loving others as Christ commands.Never stop pouring into younger generations (multi-generational discipleship).Never stop being available & eager for God's next assignment.Plan ahead for when you're gone (legal, family, spiritual legacy).Anticipate eternity with Christ; keep heaven in view.Books/resources:What Does the Bible Teach About Growing OlderSeven Essentials for Living Well and Finishing WellAging with PurposeBiblical Examples of Finishing Well (or Not)Joseph, Joshua, Daniel – faithful through hardship into old age.Hezekiah – strong early life but did not finish well after God extended his years.Insights for Seniors & ChurchesBoomers = fastest-growing aging population; church must address their value.Current church culture often silos age groups, limiting multi-generational life.Seniors should dream, envision, and engage rather than assume they're “done.”Legacy begins with personal growth and example, especially to children & grandchildren.Psalm 71:17–18 – call to declare God's power to the next generations.Distance from family can be bridged through technology, but the example of life lived for Christ is the greatest gift to pass on.Send your support for FIRST PERSON to the Far East Broadcasting Company:FEBC National Processing Center Far East Broadcasting CompanyP.O. In this sacred and deeply personal follow-up to last week's episode, I share the story of Hagar—a woman in Scripture who walked through the wilderness not once, but twice. Discarded, unseen, and weary, she was met by the God who called her by name. And she became the first person in the Bible to give God a name in return: El Roi (pronounced El Roh-EE)—The God Who Sees Me.If you're in a season of feeling forgotten, this episode will remind you: God sees you. He hears you. And He has not abandoned you.✨ In this episode, I share:How Hagar's story in Genesis 16 and 21 mirrors our modern-day wilderness seasonsWhy being stripped of status and striving is often where true faith beginsWhat it means to be seen, sustained, and sent—even when you feel invisibleA reminder that provision may already be near—you just need God to open your eyes to see it

Former NBA star Mike Newlin talks with Wayne Shepherd about his basketball career and his long commitment to his relationship with Jesus Christ. (click for more)Background & Basketball CareerMike Newlin was a standout NBA guard, scoring over 12,000 points.Drafted by the San Diego Rockets, who became the Houston Rockets one week later.Known for his discipline—trained 6–8 hours a day in high school.Believes time, not talent, is the key to success.Described his entrance into the NBA as the "easiest thing" he'd ever done because it was the logical result of consistent hard work.Conversion to ChristianityBecame a Christian at age 27, just before an NBA season. Was at the peak of his career, considered a top guard in the league.Transition was costly: after his conversion, a coach benched him for three years, claiming he didn't trust believers.Struggled emotionally and spiritually with the fallout—it took 40 years to fully process the pain of that loss.Spiritual Growth & Life After NBAStudied Bible doctrine daily for nearly 50 years.Learned Greek, Hebrew, and Latin; currently still in seminary.Sees life as preparation for the Judgment Seat of Christ.Believes salvation is by grace through faith alone, distinguishing it from his Catholic upbringing.Core BeliefsOne moment of faith—even the equivalent of a "quark" (billionth of a billionth of a grain of sand)—can determine one's eternal destiny.Feels called to write as a ministry using his background as a hook to reach others.Stresses the importance of nibbling at the Word of God daily.Encourages others to pursue God's plan actively: “Today is what matters.”Life LessonsSuffered in silence under benching but later wished he had confronted the situation more maturely.Believes God tests us in the area we care most about.Thinks Christianity shouldn't make us passive—he had to learn to balance faith and human relationship dynamics.Emphasizes personal study of Scripture over relying on others for spiritual growth.Send your support for FIRST PERSON to the Far East Broadcasting Company:FEBC National Processing Center Far East Broadcasting CompanyP.O. A divine intervention led him from a bar in Naples back to his barracks, where two fellow Marines shared the gospel with him.Early Christian Growth: After becoming a believer, Mike developed a deep hunger for Scripture, progressing from The Living Bible to a King James Version Thompson Chain Reference Bible, reading voraciously and studying theology.Call to Ministry: Though initially drawn to pulpit ministry, God redirected Mike to a different kind of calling—animation.Professional Background: Mike honed his craft at animation studios like Hanna-Barbera and Filmation, working on Fat Albert, Tarzan, and later McGee and Me and Adventures in Odyssey. The Birth of Theo: Inspired in 1978, Mike envisioned an animated series that taught children the truths of Scripture—doctrines like justification and sanctification—in engaging, humorous, and biblically faithful ways.About the Series: Theo includes 16 short episodes (approximately 10 minutes each) across five volumes. This week on Little Talks, Roop is joined by a surprise duo—Grasshopper Trent (VP of Marketing at Grasshopper Mowers) and his son Andrew. Trent usually pops in at the end of the year for Trent-a-palooza, but a quick trip to Tulsa to handle some car trouble turned into a bonus Trent podcast episode this year!Coming off last week's Gen Z episode, it felt like perfect timing to bring Andrew into the conversation. As a younger Gen Z-er, he offers up fresh insights on how his generation is using social media, their feelings toward AI, and how they really see influencers and branded content. (Spoiler: They can spot a fake endorsement a mile away.)Trent came prepared with a list of ChatGPT-generated questions, and Andrew delivered. From the surprising popularity of YouTube over streaming platforms to concerns around AI ads scamming older generations, this episode gives us a lot to think about as marketers when it comes to connecting with younger audiences. It was fun, insightful, and a great preview of what's to come when Trent-a-palooza officially rolls around in December. Until then, catch us this week on Little Talks!— Roop, Trent, Andrew, and ClaudiaTell us what you think!
Hey everyone, James Scully here, producer and host of Breaking Walls, the docu-podcast on the history of US Network Radio Broadcasting. I wanted to let you know about a new webinar I'm doing this Thursday July 17th, at 7PM on Orson Welles' early career of Orson Welles through the end of 1941. If you can't make it live this Thursday July 17th at 7PM, don't worry, I'll be emailing every person who registers a video of the webinar once it's over. Here's a link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/orson-welles-career-part-1-from-boy-wonder-to-trouble-maker-webinar-tickets-1445315741289?aff=oddtdtcreator Some more information: Throughout the last one-hundred years of American entertainment, few people have gotten as strong a reaction as Orson Welles. A rare quadruple threat: writer, director, actor, producer, Welles found immense success on stage, in films, on television, and in radio. In fact, he took center stage in the United States on more than one occasion… and not always to a positive reaction, but always with pushing the creative envelope in mind. Welles managed to alienate the newspaper industry, the Hollywood studio system, and occasionally even the broadcasting networks, but he rarely had a door closed in his face. Welles was known to work himself to the bone, and party even harder. He had romances with some of the most famous and attractive women in the country, including Virginia Nicholson, Dolores del Rio, and Rita Hayworth. He was hailed as a genius, a charlatan, a magician, an incredible friend, an a***hole, a hard-driver, a steady worker, and a man who drank too much. Welles liked to joke that he began his career on top and spent the rest of his life working his way down. Such a strong-willed, creative person deserves an in-depth look. In Part 1: From Boy Wonder To Trouble Maker (1931-1941) we'll explore Welles' early life, through his explosion of success in the 1930s all the way to the end of 1941, complete with audio clips and highlights including: • Beginnings in Illinois and China — How they helped shape Orson • The Todd Seminary School — His first exposure to theater and Radio • Connections and Early Breaks — How his mentor Roger Hill, Thornton Wilder, Alexander Woollcott, and Katharine Cornell helped Orson get to Broadway • Orson meets John Houseman and Archibald MacLeish, and first appears on the March of Time • 1935-1937 — From the March of Time to the Columbia Workshop, and how Irvin Reis taught Orson how to create for radio • How the US Government shaped the opportunity for Orson to write, direct, and star in Les Misérables on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1937 • The Shadow Knows! — Agnes Moorehead and Orson Welles' one season on The Shadow • The birth of the Mercury Theater on the Air as First Person singular. How its success led to the most infamous night in radio in October of 1938 • Mainstream success with Campbell's Soups • Orson goes to Hollywood, and signs the greatest autonomous film contract in history at 24 • Citizen Kane — How William Randolph Hearst and RKO shaped the film • Lady Esther Presents — Orson comes back to radio in the autumn of 1941 • Pearl Harbor Day and collaborating with Norman Corwin • How Joseph Cotton introduced Orson to Rita Hayworth Afterward, I'll do a Q&A — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged! Can't attend live? Not to worry! I'll be recording the event and sending the video out to all guests who register so you can watch it later. See you (virtually) there!

In keeping with the nautical theme I accidentally adopted this month, I'll be exploring the rather misleading story of sixteen century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan this week. Magellan's claim to fame is being the first person to circumnavigate the globe, to sail all the way around the Earth, a full circle. That really is Magellan's only claim to fame. Except for one thing. He never even did that. Did you know that, despite claiming all the credit posthumously, Magellan only made it about three quarters of the way around the world? One of his five ships did return to Spain after a mostly disastrous voyage but Magellan was no longer on board. So who should really claim the credit? Who was the first person to circumnavigate the Earth? Let's fix that. Support the show! When Our Lord was in the middle of preaching His famous Sermon on the Mount, He took some time to instruct the people on how to pray.He said to them, “When you pray, go into your room, and closing your door, pray to your Father in secret: and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. But in praying, do not multiply words, as the Gentiles do; for they think that by saying a great deal they will be heard. So do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. In this manner therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” (Matt. 6:6-9)What is interesting about this passage is that Our Lord speaks of God as our Father four times in a short space. He is not referring to the First Person of the Trinity so much as God in Three Persons.Almighty God is our Father in Heaven. He created us. He takes care of us. He is the source of everything for us. He wants us to join Him in Heaven. He is my Father because He created me. He is our Father because He created all of us.There are so many things that follow from this fact that God is our Father. But today, I want to highlight three of them.
