Hey girl! I'm just gonna talk at you for a minute... Buffy and Offalia both know what it's like. Will they be besties? Is Buffy the worst roller? She's on a mission and she's not afraid to shake a large, scaly monster's hand. She's gotta make some controversial decisions. What's going on with Ken and Ismark? They're going to have a moment. Ireena is definitely not making eye contact with those two lovers. Ismark is confused--he is really confused. Ireena goes over to hug Ismark. There are so many ways to fuck Ismark. He has a meat pie. Walking down desert highway, there's a bus in front of him. Get on or get off, we're making things up all night long. We dissect the politics of cult classic, Buffy, and its spin-off, Angel. Is Buffy individualist or collectivist? Libertarian or authoritarian? And what does its spectacularly camp aesthetic suggest about its ideological alignment? In a double-length bumper episode, we hope to bring you some of the magic of one of the most formally radical TV shows of all time, with a nod and wink to some potential political radicalism along the way.
Jessica Hautsch is back and prepared to face off with me about the Buffy / Riley breakup. In 510, “Into the Woods,” I finally come to the presumed end of my Quixotic mission to defend Riley Finn...because the writers FINALLY dump him unceremoniously. Did Captain Cornfed get a fair shake, from the writers or the audience? Was Xander unfair to Buffy? Was Buffy’s slaying of the Junkie Vampire Girl problematic? There might not be any easy answers. In 511, “Triangle” however, there ARE some easy answers. Is Anya’s talk with Xander about wanting a ticking bomb clock for any future breakup heartbreaking? Yes it is. Is Buffy’s sobbing a little too cartoonish? Affirmative. Is Spike’s continued fetish for greasy bar food adorable? Abso-bloomin-lutely. Next: I and a mystery guest TBD will be discussing episodes 512, “Checkpoint” and 513, “Blood Ties.” THE BREAKDOWN Run Time: 01:41:35 00:00:55 - Intro / Guest 00:04:55 - Main Topic 01:35:22 - Outro / Next THE LIBRARY Fan Phenomena: Harry Potter, edited by Valerie Frankel THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. This time, we're taking on another counterculture icon! Tonight we take on a Canadian actor and former radio newsman hailing from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in his younger days. As such, it's probably no surprise he hails mainly from Scotch stock (with a bit of German in there for good measure)... He double majored in, of all things, engineering and drama, quickly dropping all the dry bourgeoise practicalities of applied math to pursue acting across Western Europe, doing a lot of work in cult British television and horror films before finding a niche as a rebellious hippie outsider type in several celebrated war films of the late 60's and early 70's - the Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, the Eagle Has Landed...and he introduced the pivotal role of Hawkeye in the original film version of M.A.S.H., later to make Alan Alda quite possibly the biggest star of the 70's and oft referenced sine qua non of the sensitive post feminist "New Man" of the decade. Front and center in a number of important films throughout the 70's - Klute, Don't Look Now, Eye of the Needle, work with Fellini and Bertolucci, even Animal House - he'd close the decade with an even more paranoid and effective update of the 50's sci fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, before falling into a long run of workaday films that kept the bills paid but offer little of interest to the cult film aficionado. well...there IS Buffy the Vampire Slayer to contend with, and the tween Sci-Fi bowlderization of Battle Royale, The Hunger Games. Hell, he even wound up in a Kate Bush video! So join us as we talk one of the true icons of 60's and 70's cinema and Canada's finest, the one and only Donald Sutherland! Join the Board and Staff of Other Sci Fi Magazine as we discuss the Xander Complex. Is Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Xander Harris the ultimate depiction of the Everyman Hero or is he the poster boy for White Male Privilege? Join in the discussion and see if you can help us decide.
It's the gang's Freshman year at University of California, Sunnydale, and while her friends are quickly acclimating to their new surroundings, our Slayer is overwhelmed. She finds a kindred spirit in Eddie, another lost underclassman. But when Eddie goes missing, Buffy is sure there is foul play afoot. She must battle a gang of Freshman-feeding vampires all by herself. Kristen and Mike reminisce about their own college experiences - from getting lost on campus, to buying books, to overproduced posters, and friends growing apart. In Living Conditions, Buffy isn't getting along so well with her roommate - Kathy. Her maniacally peppy attitude and persistence into Buffy's personal life proves too much for the Slayer. Even though there are prophetic dreams and glowy-eyed demons to contend with, this all takes a back seat to Buffy's constant ranting against her roomie. Is Buffy losing her grip on reality? Or is Kathy more than just an inconsiderate college Freshman? Kristen and Mike discuss the many uses of "Bachelor Shackles", and share some roommate war stories. PLUS! We answer Raven's question: "What episode of Buffy are you most excited to discuss on the podcast?"
Before Spike, Angel, and the Scooby Gang... there was the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. Chris loved the show, but not the film. Donna and Carlos have never seen the series, so for them this 1992 comedy IS Buffy. Topics include: how Joss Whedon's original vision for the film was compromised by the director, what changes were made and what elements survived, how unfair it is to compare Kristy Swanson's performance to Sarah Michelle Gellar's, how disinterested Donald Sutherland seems to be in all of this, the fact that nobody has much of a reaction to all of these terrible events, some confusion over why vampires haven't taken over the planet yet, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show
