Higher Learning Reaction, Recap, Breakdown, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau take on Higher Learning, the 1995 drama directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) that tackles themes of race, identity, privilege, and systemic injustice in the American college experience. The film follows three freshmen—Malik (Omar Epps), Kristen (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport)—as they navigate the pressures of higher education, racial tensions, and personal transformation at the fictional Columbus University. Some of the most intense and pivotal moments include Malik's struggle with his track scholarship and racial identity, Remy's descent into white supremacy under the influence of Cole Hauser's character, and the tragic climactic shooting scene that shakes the entire campus. Other powerful moments include Ice Cube's character Fudge dropping hard truths about systemic racism, Laurence Fishburne's powerful lectures as Professor Phipps, and the heartbreaking fates of several key characters that still resonate today. Omar Epps as Malik Williams (Love & Basketball, House), Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Phantom), Michael Rapaport as Remy (True Romance, Atypical), Ice Cube as Fudge (Friday, Barbershop), Jennifer Connelly as Taryn (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), Tyra Banks as Deja (Coyote Ugly, America's Next Top Model), Laurence Fishburne as Professor Phipps (The Matrix, John Wick 2), Cole Hauser as Scott Moss (Yellowstone, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Regina King as Monet (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Busta Rhymes as Dreads (Halloween: Resurrection, Shaft). If you're a fan of John Singleton's socially conscious films, be sure to check out Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Baby Boy (2001), and Four Brothers (2005). Luke Perry biographer Margaret Wappler joined us for a conversation about her hybrid memoir profiling the '90s heartthrob, and the impact Perry had on viewers from 90210 to Riverdale. We dug into Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Perry alongside Kristy Swanson and Donald Sutherland. We particularly loved the comedic swings of supporting cast members Paul Reubens and David Arquette. Overall, we think the movie's feminist message and uneven tone are almost anachronistic, but can't deny its lasting impact.Discussed in this episode:Margaret's latest book, A Good Bad Boy: Luke Perry and How a Generation Grew UpFind Margaret:instagram.com/margaretwapplermargaretwappler.comFind Kat:twitter.com/kat_ex_machinaletterboxd.com/katexmachinaFind AC:instagram.com/aclambertyletterboxd.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramNEW: Letterboxd

Landlords, Lawyers, and Lost Heads: Joe Pesci's Wild '90s Comedies

Video Store Podcast

In this episode of The Video Store Podcast, I am recommending into a mix popular and lesser-known Joe Pesci comedies from the '90s. If you're in the mood for a good laugh, these are films you might want to rent. The Super (1991): This film stars Joe Pesci as Louie Kritski, a slumlord who gets sentenced to live in one of his own run-down buildings until he fixes it up. Pesci's performance brings humor to a story about class and redemption. This movie might not be as well-known as others from the era, but it's worth a look, especially for fans of Pesci. You might not know this, but the film was directed by Rod Daniel, who also directed Teen Wolf (1985).My Cousin Vinny (1992): In this award-winning classic, Pesci plays Vinny Gambini, a brash, inexperienced lawyer who has no courtroom experience, defending his cousin and a friend accused of murder. Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for her role as Vinny's fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito, and it is well-deserved. The chemistry between Pesci and Tomei works well, and the film's humor holds up well, even decades later.8 Heads in a Duffel Bag (1997): This dark comedy has a pretty bizarre premise: a hitman, played by Pesci, accidentally loses a bag containing eight heads. The film balances slapstick humor with dark comedy. While it didn't make a huge splash when it first came out, it's gained a bit of a cult following over the years. The film also features early performances from David Spade and Kristy Swanson.Gone Fishin' (1997): Rounding out this week's recommendations has Pesci alongside Danny Glover. These two stars play best friends whose fishing trip goes hilariously off the rails. It's a lighthearted buddy comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. The movie was directed by Christopher Cain, who also directed Young Guns (1988). It might not have been a critical success, but it's a fun, easy watch if you're in the mood for something light. That wraps up this week's picks. Whether you're in the mood for slapstick comedy, a courtroom classic, or a buddy adventure, Joe Pesci's comedic range in these films is sure to bring some laughs. So next time you're browsing for something to watch, give one of these a try—you might just find a new favorite.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Good times!Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis are the token Americans, obsessed with the pursuit of a driver in a green van, who they suspect may be a homicidal maniac, in the Australian trucker suspense classic Road Games (1981).  C. Thomas Howell makes the terrible mistake of picking up kill-crazy hitchhiker, Rutger Hauer, and then becomes the prime suspect for his crimes in The Hitcher (1986). A young couple eloping to Las Vegas, leave the interstate, only to end up in a struggle to escape the underworld on the Highway to Hell (1991). This high-speed action-comedy stars Charlie Sheen as a wrongly-convicted felon who, in a desperate bid for freedom, kidnaps a rich heiress played by Kristy Swanson and leads the police on a frenzied pursuit across California. Filled with absurd car chases, unexpected romance, and over-the-top performances, "The Chase" transforms a simple police pursuit into an outrageously entertaining spectacle. It's a film that gleefully ramps up the crazy meter, combining laugh-out-loud moments with adrenaline-pumping action to create a viewing experience that's as hilariously chaotic as it is unapologetically fun. IT'S FINALLY SPOOKY SEASON!!! This week we are kicking off our favorite time of the year with the review of the wacky b movie, Deadly Friend from 1986 with our new friend, special effects makeup artist, Sarah Schuck! The film by Horror Maestro, Wes Craven serves as his pallet cleanser from the world of Freddy by giving us the world of B B the robot and an equally robotic Kristy Swanson in her first role. Known the world over for a very specific basketball-beheading meme, Deadly Friend is a weird anomaly that at one moment feels like an after school special about teen love then morphs into a 80's slasher complete with questions about what our lead character, Paul, did with BB the robot to make it so protective of him... Book:  Flowers in the Attic              By V C Andrews   Film:    Flowers in the Attic (1987)   Flowers in the Attic is a 1979 Gothic novel by V. C. Andrews. It is the first book in the Dollanganger Series, and was followed by Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, Garden of Shadows, Christopher's Diary: Secrets of Foxworth, Christopher's Diary: Echoes of Dollanganger and Christopher's Diary: Secret Brother. The novel is written in the first-person, from the point of view of Cathy Dollanganger. It was twice adapted into films in 1987 and 2014. The book was extremely popular, selling over forty million copies world-wide.   Flowers in the Attic is a 1987 American psychological horror film directed by Jeffrey Bloom and starring Louise Fletcher, Victoria Tennant, Kristy Swanson, and Jeb Stuart Adams. Its plot follows four children who, after the death of their father, are held captive in the attic of their abusive grandmother's sprawling estate by their cruel and manipulative mother. It is based on V. C. Andrews' 1979 novel of the same name. At one point Wes Craven was scheduled to direct the film, and had completed a screenplay draft. Producers were disturbed by his approach to the incest-laden story, however, and Jeffrey Bloom ended up with writing and directing duties.   Opening Credits; Introduction (2.30); Background History (13.20); Flowers in the Attic Plot Synopsis (14.25); Book Thoughts(20.23); Let's Rate (41.09); Introducing a Film (54.33); Flowers in the Attic (1987) Film Trailer (55.54); Lights, Camera, Action (57.53); How Many Stars (1:19.18); End Credits (1:24.36); Closing Credits (1:26.13)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – copyright 2021. Before Sarah Michele Gellar, Kristy Swanson brought Joss Whedon's iconic vampire slaying heroine to the silver screen. Does this 90s relic hold up to scrutiny sans nostalgia? listen to our latest episode to find out. Artwork by Dusting Goebel (@dgoebel00 on Instagram) Synopsis Buffy the Vampire Slayer, before she was an iconic television heroine was first found on the silver screen starring Kristy Swanson. Considering this movie is 30 years old, I'm not sure many people remember it, let alone the WB television show. However, Joss Whedon, it's writer is well known, having written and directed some of the highest grossing films of all time in the last decade. Buffy in this film is the stereotypical Valley Girl of the 90s. The type that opened Sir Mix a Lot's hit single of the same year “I Like Big Butts”. She is vapid, dumb, and flaky. When an infestation of vampires begin to invade LA and her high schools Hawthorne High, a mysterious man in a trench coat named Merrick shows up. Merrick informs Buffy that she has been chosen to be the latest in a long line of vampire hunters throughout history. Buffy has no interest, but she finds she has a natural knack for Slaying. She decides to team up with Merrick and train so that she can defeat Lothos, the ancient vampire that is the leader of the cause of the recent uptick in vampire activity. https://youtu.be/pnZkV_aR_9w Review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) I have a lot of nostalgia for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I watched it several times in the 90s as a prepubescent little fat kid. I remember it having some iconic performances and moments, but upon checking the Rotten Tomatoes critics score, it sits at 36%. Was I so out of touch? No, it's the critics who are wrong. Watching it yesterday, I tried to put off nostalgia and be unbiased. It has some good bones. There are some great performances and Joss Whedon's writing does shine through, but it is bogged down by poor direction. Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Rubens, Rutger Hauer, and Luke Perry all bring the appropriate amount of gravitas and goofiness that the high concept screenplay demands. The dialogue is top notch, creating compelling characters while placing it squarely in 90s LA. Where it has problems is when it comes to establishing stakes (no pun intended) and establishing the lore in a compelling way. This is often blamed on changes made to Joss Whedon's original script, which resulted in him walking away from the set halfway through production. In a comic book series called Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Origin, you can read the original vision Joss Whedon had for the film. It really is nearly identical except for a few key scenes. Where the film starts to fall apart is the choppy and sometimes confusing editing and direction. It's clear that the studio and/or director wanted to de-emphasize the darker elements of the story and focus more on the light hearted comedic aspects. What they didn't understand is that those dark moments help to sell the comedy and make it a much more compelling film if executed right. The stakes are never truly established, because we're never shown that Buffy particularly cares about her school or any of her other similarly vapid friends. We are given scant details of the main villain, and when the main confrontations occur, they seem arbitrary and rushed. In the end, while it still holds a special place in my heart, I can see the flaws in the movie, and it's just aight.
