In August 2010, Gareth Williams, a brilliant Welsh mathematician working for GCHQ and on secondment to MI6, was found dead inside a padlocked sports bag in a London flat linked to the security services. His death quickly became one of Britain's most perplexing unsolved mysteries. An inquest concluded that Gareth's death was unnatural and likely involved a criminal act. Yet a later Metropolitan Police review suggested it was probably a tragic accident. The conflicting conclusions only deepened the mystery. As investigators examined Gareth's final days, reports emerged that his highly sensitive work involved tracking international money laundering networks and monitoring Russian organised crime interests. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell explore the life, secret work and unexplained death of a gifted codebreaker. Was Gareth Williams murdered, or is there another explanation behind this enduring mystery?CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell examine one of the most controversial criminal cases of the 21st century: the killing of Reeva Steenkamp by South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius. On Valentine's Day 2013, Steenkamp was shot dead at Pistorius's home in Pretoria.Pistorius claimed he believed an intruder was hiding in the bathroom, but prosecutors argued the shooting was intentional. The case gripped the world, leading to a highly publicised trial that initially resulted in a conviction for culpable homicide rather than murder.Following appeals, the verdict was overturned, and Pistorius was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison, less time served. Geoffrey and Molly explore the events leading up to the shooting, the courtroom drama, and the lasting impact on all those involved.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell examine the crimes of serial killer Robert Black, whose abduction, rape and murder of young girls shocked the UK throughout the 1980s. From the disappearance of Susan Maxwell, Caroline Hogg and Sarah Harper to the later conviction for the murder of Jennifer Cardy, they trace the painstaking police investigation that became one of the largest manhunts in British criminal history. Geoffrey and Molly explore how Black evaded capture for years while travelling the country as a delivery driver, and why investigators suspected him in a string of unsolved child murders across Britain and Europe. They uncover the disturbing psychology of a predator who hid in plain sight, leaving devastation in his wake until his eventual arrest, conviction and death in prison in 2016.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell uncover the terrifying story of Gordon Frederick Cummins, the RAF serviceman who became known as the Blackout Killer.Over just five days in wartime London, Cummins murdered four women and brutally attacked two others while the city lay hidden beneath the enforced blackout of the Blitz. His victims were strangled, and several were shockingly mutilated, crimes so savage they stunned even seasoned detectives.Dubbed the Blackout Ripper and the Wartime Ripper, Cummins preyed on vulnerable women as bombs fell across the capital during the darkest days of the Second World War. Convicted of murdering Evelyn Oatley, he was sentenced to death and hanged at Wandsworth Prison in June 1942, becoming the only murderer in British history executed during an air raid.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Three women murdered. One city terrified. And a killer who vanished without a trace. In this gripping episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell investigate the chilling case of Bible John, the unidentified serial killer who preyed on young women in Glasgow between 1968 and 1969.Each victim met a sharply dressed stranger at the famous Barrowland Ballroom before suffering a brutal death. Charming, intelligent and obsessed with quoting scripture, the man became known as Bible John after condemning adultery and reciting passages from the Bible to his final victim.Despite one of the biggest manhunts in Scottish history, and decades of speculation linking suspects including serial killer Peter Tobin, the case remains unsolved. Who was the monster behind the polite smile and biblical sermons? And how did he evade justice for more than half a century?CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Part 2 of this Blood Ties special with Geoffrey and Molly Wansell. Confronting one of Britain's most chilling killers: Dennis Nilsen. Calm, calculated, and hiding in plain sight, he murdered at least twelve young men between 1978 and 1983. Luring victims back to his North London flats, he strangled them, then carried out grotesque rituals, keeping bodies for days, even weeks, before dismembering and disposing of them. It is a story that still shocks.Dubbed the Muswell Hill Murderer, Nilsen was finally caught and convicted at the Old Bailey, sentenced to life, later a whole life term. But the question remains: how did he get away with it for so long?Geoffrey and Molly Wansell dig into the detail, the failures, and the psychology behind the headlines, asking what made Nilsen who he was, and why nobody stopped him sooner.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Armed, highly dangerous, and trained in survival techniques linked to the SAS, Prudom stayed one step ahead of police for eighteen days. His ability to disappear into the wilderness shocked the nation and exposed the limits of Britain's police forces. Geoffrey and Molly unravel the story of the manhunt, the fear that gripped the country, and the extraordinary final pursuit that brought Prudom's deadly escape to an end.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell explore the shocking murder of 12 year old Leo Ross, killed in a seemingly random knife attack on his walk home from school in Birmingham. They examine the disturbing profile of a 14 year old killer who had already carried out violent assaults on vulnerable strangers in the days before the crime. Drawing on court testimony and police insight, the episode unpicks questions of motive, mental health, and missed warning signs.Geoffrey and Molly consider how such a senseless act could happen, and what it reveals about youth violence today. A deeply affecting story, this episode asks whether justice can ever match the scale of loss, and how communities are left to cope in the aftermath of tragedy.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Maria Pearson is Britain's longest serving female prisoner and one of its most unsettling cases. Dubbed the 'forgotten prisoner', she has spent decades behind bars, yet still refuses to accept responsibility for a brutal murder that shocked the nation. In 1987, driven by jealousy and rage, she stalked and stabbed a young woman 17 times in the street. It was calculated, savage, and final. What followed is just as chilling. Nine parole rejections. Repeated failures to engage with rehabilitation. Allegations of bullying and intimidation inside prison walls. And still, she insists it was self defence. So what keeps someone locked in that mindset for nearly forty years? And should the system ever release a prisoner who will not admit guilt? Geoffrey and Molly Wansell discuss Maria Pearson in this latest episode of Blood Ties.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Steve Wright was already one of Britain's most notorious killers. Known as the Suffolk Strangler, he was given a whole life sentence in 2008 for murdering five women in Ipswich. The case shocked the nation and left lasting scars on a community that had felt safe. But the story did not end there. In 2026, Wright admitted to the murder of seventeen year old Victoria Hall, a crime that had remained unsolved for nearly three decades. Her family had waited years for answers. This episode of Blood Ties revisits the case. Six victims. One killer. And a truth that proves some stories are far darker than we first believe and asks whether justice can ever truly arrive when the past keeps returning again.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. In the early hours of a summer morning, a city that should have been asleep became the scene of something unthinkable. On 13 June 2023, a series of violent attacks unfolded across Nottingham. What began as a quiet walk home for two students ended in tragedy. Minutes later, a school caretaker setting out for his day was killed, his van stolen and turned into a weapon. By the time it was over, three people had lost their lives and others were left fighting to recover. At the centre of it all was Valdo Calocane. In court, the case would raise difficult and uncomfortable questions about mental health, responsibility and justice. His eventual plea of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility would divide opinion and leave families searching for answers. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly look beyond the headlines to understand how a single morning can ripple through generations. Because when violence strikes so close to home, the impact does not end at the scene. It lives on in the people, the memories and the ties that bind them.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell examine the chilling case of Stephen Port, a serial killer who hid in plain sight in modern London. On the surface, Port seemed deeply unremarkable. A softly spoken bus depot chef who kept largely to himself, he lived a quiet, almost invisible life. He rarely socialised, spending most of his time alone in his flat, trawling internet dating sites and apps such as Grindr. To the few who knew him, he appeared awkward, isolated and strange but hardly dangerous. The truth was far more sinister. In this gripping episode, Geoffrey and Molly unravel how Stephen Port was able to operate in plain sight, the failures that allowed the killings to continue, and the devastating human cost of a case that shocked the nation.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Send a textWith Episode 8, our hosts put their Gray Days behind them, wrapping the short Season 16 with THE IMMIGRANT (2013), or as it was a.k.a.'ed during its short development and prior to its delayed release “Low Life” and “The Nightingale.” James Gray teams back up with cowriter Richard Menello to write a period drama role explicitly for Marion Cotillard whom Gray met through her then-partner director Guillaume Canet during their work together on the oft-mentioned Blood Ties also released in 2013. The story follows the hard luck of Cotillard's titular immigrant as her likewise Polish emigre sister is confined to a medical ward on Ellis Island during immigration while Cotillard's Ewa Cybulska is offered an opportunity to remain in the States through the kindness of Joaquin Phoenix playing a pimp and former child immigrant named Bruno Weiss in the actor's fourth and to-date final Gray film role. Cotillard's immigrant forms a brief love triangle with Jeremy Renner's magician and brother-to-Bruno character Orlando The Magician until he ***SPOILER*** runs off to Iraq to defuse bombs as one of the Avengers who just shoots arrows or something. J/k. It's a Gray film. You know someone is going to die. Maybe it's the magician. Maybe it's the sister. Maybe both. Stay awake to find out, or give this episode a listen. This episode, Harvey Weinstein returns; Ken tries renaming the podcast; Ryan and Thomas are spot on in their estimation of the film; and our boys rank the eight-film oeuvre on The Gray Scale. In this episode, with special guest Grace from Redrum, Geoffrey and Molly confront one of the most disturbing crimes in recent British history. The murder of Brianna Ghey. A 16 year old girl who trusted the wrong people and paid with her life.On 11 February 2023, Brianna was lured to a park by someone she believed was a friend. What awaited her was not friendship, but a carefully planned act of extreme violence. Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, both just 15 at the time, had planned the attack in advance. This was not a moment of rage. It was deliberate. It was cold. And it was brutal. The court would later describe the crime as driven by sadistic tendencies, with transphobia playing a secondary role. That finding raises uncomfortable questions. About cruelty. About obsession with violence. And about how two teenagers came to see murder as something to rehearse, discuss, and finally carry out.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellFeaturing: Grace Cordell https://redrumtruecrime.lnk.to/listenProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. As part of our Hidden Killers 2025 Year in Review series, we turn the lens away from the accused and toward the people who've been living in the shadow of one of the nation's most haunting murder cases — the family of Bryan Kohberger. In this gripping three-part deep dive, Tony Brueski uncovers the emotional and legal crossroads facing Kohberger's parents and sisters as the Idaho murder trial looms. What happens when the system turns its gaze toward the family of the accused? What did they know, and when? We begin with the latest bombshell: both Bryan Kohberger's father and sister may be called as witnesses by the prosecution. Why would the state take the extraordinary step of subpoenaing family members? Could they have seen something—heard something—that adds weight to the timeline? Using verified court filings and public statements, Tony breaks down what this means for a case already teetering between the personal and the procedural. Then we go inside the Kohberger home in the tense weeks before Bryan's arrest. One sister reportedly noticed unsettling behavior—something that made her question the brother she thought she knew. What did she see? What did she say? And how did those private moments of suspicion and fear evolve into public testimony? This episode also examines the psychology of proximity — how families of alleged killers experience guilt by association, media intrusion, and unbearable moral conflict. Are they victims of circumstance, silent witnesses to horror, or both? Along the way, former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony to dissect the unnerving behavior captured on surveillance footage after the murders — Kohberger shopping at Albertson's and Costco, the infamous mirror selfie, and possible online activity as “Papa Rodger.” Could these details show a man spiraling, or someone savoring the aftermath? From the quiet dread inside the Kohberger home to the bizarre post-crime trail that keeps resurfacing, this is the story of a family entangled in the making of a modern American tragedy.

In the heart of Belfast during the height of the Troubles, a brutal gang prowled the night, abducting, torturing, and killing innocent Catholics in a reign of terror that would shock even hardened police officers. Known as The Shankill Butchers, this group of loyalist paramilitaries turned the streets into hunting grounds, leaving a city already divided by politics and religion gripped by fear. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell uncover how one man, Lenny Murphy, led a gang whose sadistic killings blurred the line between political violence and pure psychopathy. I'm so excited to say that my guest on the Great Women Artist Podcast is one of the world's most renowned photographers working today, Sally Mann. Hailed for her images of nature in the remote American south – full of deeply layered memories and rivers that become characters of their own – and intimate portrayals of her children Jesse, Emmett and Virginia, Sally Mann creates photographs full of beauty. Beauty being something that is tied up with ephemerality, that is alive, that is in motion, something that we have to catch. As she aptly wrote in her 2015 memoir, Hold Still, “there cannot be any real beauty without the indolic whiff of decay.” Mann's photographs are therefore both painterly and fleeting. They capture people on the cusp of something else, whether that be illness or an increasingly decaying body, but she also captures the land, connecting us to the ancient and the natural worlds. Using an eight by 10 bellows camera and 19th century photographic techniques, her black and white aesthetic - that can be both dreamlike and hazy - chimes with her interest in memory and decay. Born in 1951 in Lexington, Virginia, Mann began her artistic career as a poet, but a deep dive in photography in the late 1960s whilst attending the Ansel Adams Gallery Yosemite Workshops was one of the catalysts for her photographic career. Words have always also taken center stage - she studied literature at Hollins College in Virginia in 1974 and completed an MA in creative writing the following year. She is the author of Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs and was the subject of two documentaries, Blood Ties in 1994, and What Remains in 2006. However, this year she also released the New York Times bestselling book, Art Work: The Creative Life, a part memoir, part insight into her creative life, which is a strange and lonely one; one that is so personal and insular, and one that we can often take for granted and get angry at. Yet it was reading this that really reminded me about why so many of us do what we do… Books mentioned: Sally Mann - Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs: https://www.waterstones.com/book/hold-still/sally-mann/9780241699287 Sally Mann - Art Work: The Creative Life: https://www.waterstones.com/book/art-work/sally-mann/9780241774540 Artists mentioned: Ansel Adams (1902–1984) Edward Weston (1886–1958) Cy Twombly (1928–2011) Bill Brandt (1904–1983) Robert Capa (1913–1954) Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) Joseph Szabo (b.1944) Lady Clementina Hawarden (1822–1865) Imogen Cunningham (1883–1976) Artworks mentioned: Sally Mann, The Perfect Tomato (1990): https://www.guggenheim.org/artwork/10396 Sally Mann, Immediate Family series (1984–1992) Sally Mann, Dead Duck (1988): https://observer.co.uk/culture/photography/article/sally-mann-my-quest-to-take-the-perfect-photograph-memoir Sally Mann, Marital Trust series (1990s to the early 2000s, to be exhibited at Gagosian in 2027) The Family of Man, a 1955 exhibition at MoMA, organised by Edward Steichen: https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/2429 -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield

After 1994, something in Nicholas Burton's mind began to unravel. Once seen as bright and promising, he started shouting at himself and became obsessed with religion. Friends noticed the change — but no one imagined how dark things would become. His fixation soon turned toward Rachel McGraa, a woman whose kindness would ultimately cost her everything. In this episode of Blood Ties, we trace Burton's descent from charm to chaos and uncover how his fractured reality led to Rachel's tragic death.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram: bloodties_podEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Two women, two different worlds — but both hiding lethal secrets. Jane Toppan, the nurse known as “Jolly Jane,” poisoned more than 30 patients in the late 1800s, later admitting she killed simply for pleasure. And Polly Bartlett, dubbed Wyoming's first female serial killer, ran a boarding house with her father where unsuspecting travelers met their end for money and greed. In this episode of Blood Ties, we uncover the chilling parallels between a trusted caregiver and a ruthless innkeeper, and how their crimes challenged the expectations of women in their time while leaving behind a legacy of fear.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram: bloodties_podEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. This is one of Britain's most harrowing true crime stories – a crime so savage it shocked the nation to its core. In this gripping episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell dissect the chilling case of Lin and Megan Russell, a mother and daughter brutally murdered in a frenzied hammer attack while walking home from school in a quiet Kent village. Their family dog was killed, their daughter Josie left for dead – but miraculously survived. What followed was a tangled investigation and years of doubt that exposed the frailties of the justice system. Obsessed with horror films like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Gonzalez spiralled into drug abuse, mental illness, and violent fantasies that turned him into one of Britain's most notorious killers. In this episode of Blood Ties, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell explore the troubled childhood, psychiatric struggles, and chilling crimes of the so-called 'Freddy Krueger Killer'.We examine how failures in the mental health system allowed his descent into violence — and what his case reveals about obsession, untreated psychosis, and the making of a murderer.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram: bloodties_podEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcast247Support: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcast Hosted on Acast. Episode 375: On a bleak November afternoon in 2003, Toronto's east end became the unlikely stage for a crime so brutal and bizarre that, even years later, it defies belief. The victim was 12-year-old Johnathon Robert Madden, a boy remembered by teachers and friends as “kind and thoughtful,” the kind of child who would go out of his way to walk a younger classmate home just to ensure he was safe. His murder was not the work of a stranger or a notorious criminal, but of his brother, 16-year-old Kevin Madden—a troubled youth whose anger and alienation had been festering for years. Kevin was not alone that day. With him were two friends: 15-year-old Timothy Ferriman, a self-styled “vampire” desperate for attention and belonging, and another teenage boy whose identity remains protected by law. Together, the teens would go on an afternoon rampage of violence and destruction that would shatter a family and horrify a city. Sources: 2006 CanLII 33472 (ON SC) | R. v.
