Pretty Woman was released in 1990. One of the most beloved and successful romantic comedies of all time, the film tells the Cinderella story of a sex worker, played by Julia Roberts, who finds love with a slick businessman - Richard Gere - after he picks her up on Hollywood Boulevard.Fast forward to 2025 and the astonishing Oscar success of Anora - director Sean Baker's tale of a young sex worker whose whirlwind affair with a Russian billionaire's son turns bad, fast.So how has the way we treat sex work on screen changed? Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the long and thorny relationship between cinema and sex work. Mark speaks to film historian and critic Pamela Hutchinson about how sex work has been tackled in over a hundred years of movies - from early silent films like Pandora's Box, to the work of Sean Baker. They discuss Jane Fonda's Oscar-winning turn as a ‘call girl' in Klute, and look at how male sex worker films like Midnight Cowboy might approach the subject differently. Meanwhile, Ellen talks to Andrea Werhun, the writer, performer and real-life sex worker who served as a consultant on Anora - about her work on the film, and her love for another Richard Gere sex work film, American Gigolo. And Ellen also speaks to Kristen Lovell and Zachary Drucker, whose 2023 documentary The Stroll traced the history of trans sex workers in New York City's Meatpacking District. Kristen and Zachary discuss why sex work has been a key part of trans history - and what they think Anora's success means for sex workers.

We welcome back Phedon Papamichael, ASC, GSC for the fourth time on The Cinematography Podcast. Cinematographer Phedon Papamichael started preproduction on A Complete Unknown with frequent collaborator, director James Mangold in 2019, before being postponed by the pandemic. They began prepping in summer 2023 and shooting in earnest by the early spring of 2024, which worked well for capturing the changing of the seasons in New York. The long lead time was a huge benefit for both the cast and crew. Phedon and the production team had time to research the time period, create an extensive lookbook of period photos and mull over the script and characters. Actor Timothee Chalamet had time to practice guitar and harmonica and was able to perform most of the songs live. Phedon was very familiar with the music of Bob Dylan, and grew up listening to the artist. He wanted to capture how Dylan evolved and developed as a musician. The set was very intimate, and Chalamet completely absorbed the character of Bob Dylan, frequently watching playback on set, then finding something new with each take. “It was very much this organic process of us capturing and him discovering the character,” says Phedon. “And you could just see it was so enjoyable for every crew member. Everybody was inspired by it.” A Complete Unknown used very few sets and stages, and the production designers transformed two blocks of New York City streets into the 1960's. Phedon shot digitally on the Sony Venice 2 camera, which was then scanned to a film negative and then scanned back to digital. Influenced by the films Klute, The Godfather and The French Connection, he wanted A Complete Unknown to have the Kodachrome look with an earthy color palette. Phedon used lighting that was appropriate for the time period as well, using white and tungsten lights, enhanced with numerous practicals on the set. He embraced the mood of the nightclub scenes, with a single source spotlight hitting the performers on stage and the audience lit with candles on the tables. As the movie progresses into the '60's and Bob Dylan becomes more famous, Phedon began to change the look of the film. “It becomes a little bit more expressionistic, a little more aggressive,” he says. “The stage lights become a little bit bigger, the highlights are a bit hotter, the contrast and shadows are more extreme.” Phedon's ultimate goal as a cinematographer is to stay subtle. “I never want anybody to perceive or feel that I'm lighting something,” he says. “I never want it to feel like there's a craftsman behind it. I always like the photography to just allow us to focus on the character, and really not distract from it.” Find Phedon Papamichael: Instagram @papa2 Hear our previous interviews with Phedon Papamichael on The Trial of the Chicago 7, Ford v. Ferrari, and our live podcast interview. You can see A Complete Unknown currently in theaters. Is this a Murder Mystery? A Pretty Woman prequel? Perhaps it is a Romantic Drama. We aren't quite sure, but Klute from 1971 was certainly praised. Set in what was the modern day early 70's, a detective, a high class call girl, and a corporate chief have their lives entangled as they try to solve a murder mystery. Bree Daniel runs afoul with John Klute who is investigating the death. She is determined not to get attached to him or to reveal her secrets, but she seemingly caves to his dry and calm demeanor. Who dun it? In this review we take a look in depth of this classic film to see if it has aged well like fine wine or more like a dried up prune.Starring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland and Charles Cioffi. Directed by Alan J. Pakula and Written by Andy and David Lewis.
Welcome to another episode of Hit Rewind, where Michael and Kersey take you on a cinematic journey through the 1960s, exploring films that defy chronological order and conventional storytelling. This episode is packed with candid discussions, spicy takes, and a deep dive into some of the most iconic films of the era. First up, the duo tackles Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Michael shares his polarizing views on Kubrick's work, discussing the technical brilliance yet emotional disconnect he feels in the film. The conversation touches on the film's groundbreaking visuals, its influence on sci-fi, and the pretentious yet captivating elements that define Kubrick's style. Next, they explore Klute, a gripping thriller featuring Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland. The episode delves into the film's complex character dynamics, its subversion of typical genre tropes, and the exceptional performances that elevate it from a mere thriller to a profound character study. The conversation shifts to Joe, a gritty, low-budget film that tackles themes of bigotry and societal division. Michael and Curzzy analyze the character of Joe, the film's depiction of class and racial tensions, and the shocking climax that leaves a lasting impact on viewers. Finally, they discuss Little Big Man, a film that offers a unique perspective on American history through the eyes of Dustin Hoffman's character. The hosts examine its portrayal of Native American culture, its satirical elements, and its role in reshaping the Western genre. Tune in for an engaging episode filled with thought-provoking discussions and a celebration of cinema's ability to challenge and entertain.

We continue our series paying tribute to the late Donald Sutherland by covering an unconventional, Oscar-winning thriller from 1971. KLUTE tells the story of a man (Sutherland) in search of his missing friend. His only lead is a tempestuous call girl named Bree (Jane Fonda). As the two of them pursue answers to this mystery, a richly layered and disarmingly human story unfolds between them. The film is filled with provocative nuances and challenging subtleties. It's a somewhat demanding, but also rewarding film, that has a lot to say about the ways we present ourselves to each other and what that says about who we truly are. This conversation also features a Patron-only segment where we share some preliminary thoughts on the recent horror film starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe that's been generating a ton of buzz: Longlegs. It's beginning to look a lot like Scheider around the LJFAM studios as Sarah and MJ kick off a season focusing on the films of Roy Scheider with 1971's Klute. They discuss how great 70's movies are, the wonderful building of tension that was created by Hitchcock and perfected by Alan J. Pakula, and heap some praise on Roy Scheider's brief, but substantial role!
Today on another episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we continue our conversation with actor Christopher Murray and delve deeper into some fun and fascinating new stories about his mother actor Hope Lange, father actor Don Murray and step father Director Alan J. Pakula. Christopher talks to us about one of the most interesting connections he and his parents have – Director David Lynch. Hope Lange starred in Blue Velvet and both Christopher and Don played roles on Twin Peaks all in three separate decades. A totally weird Lynchian through line that is perhaps only rivaled by Laura Dern and Diane Ladd. Moreover we discuss some of the backstage jealousies of making the film Bus Stop which his parents were both cast in – although no one knew they were married. It sheds a light on some of the insecurities and well documented frailties of Marilyn Monroe. We also discuss Sean Connery's golf game, Scarlett Johansen's first role in the film Just Cause, how you ingratiate yourself into the good graces of a Scotsman and more. This leads to a Christopher's reminisces of his truly remarkable stepfather Alan J. Pakula both at home and at work. From his time on the set of the film Klute where he met Jane Fonda to the trips Alan took he and his sister on to Morocco & Italy we really feel like we are getting a story very few know about. Part two of our conversation with Christopher is filled with beautiful memories and some tragic losses. Thanks for taking us along for the ride Chris. The Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

We just marked a national holiday in the United States, so you know what that means: It's cash grab season! Megan and Dave talk about said (possible) cash grab, BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F (1:53). Eddie Murphy and cohorts return in the legacy sequel that continues the legacy of shittiness that BEVERLY HILL COP III unleashed on the world 30 years earlier. Ugh. Then Evan joins Megan and Dave to talk about KILL (16:41), a terrifically bloody action film from India that features a commando on a train trying to save his fiancée from bandits. It's got loads of good killin', but it's not for the faint of heart. (It makes COMMANDO look fuggin' tame.) Finally, Dave and Megan talk MAXXXINE (40:39), the third and possibly not-final chapter in the Ti West/Mia Goth saga that began with X and continued with the X's prequel, PEARL. Over on Patreon, we talk about KLUTE to commemorate Donald Sutherland, who died on June 20, 2024.

In a Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter, Fargo and Mad Men star Jon Hamm proclaimed himself a “comic book nerd” and mentioned he is still in talks with both heads of Marvel and DC for roles as well as confirmed that he passed on The Green Lantern saying it was one he “definitely didn't want to do.” Hamm even indicated he has a role selected at Marvel, if the studio does the storyline…and they say they will. The second trailer for The Penguin, the Colin Farrell-led spinoff series of Matt Reeves' The Batman, was released. It highlights more characters who will appear and indicates the Falcones, Gotham's first family of crime, will be at the center of the story. The show also features Salvatore Maroni, played by Clancy Brown, and is led by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunner Lauren LeFranc. Pixar's Inside Out 2 has jetted past Dune Part 2 to take the crown for top box office take of the year so far. Arthouse film The Bikeriders was highly marketed, but opened at third place with $10 million, and Russell Crowe's horror flick The Exorcism didn't even scrape the bottom of the barrel at a $2.43 million opening. At this point Blade isn't in purgatory…it is officially in development hell. Between the writer's and actor's strikes, actors, writers, and directors being let go and leaving the project, it seems almost impossible that Mahershala Ali's Blade will ever see the light of day. But Hollywood Reporter claims both Ali and Marvel boss Kevin Feige seem like they don't want to drive a stake through the movie, regardless of the lengthy development timeline, obvious loss of money, revolving door of talent, complete changes to the story, and more. M3GAN, the hit horror movie from James Wan's Atomic Monster and Jason Blum's Blumhouse, is getting a spinoff titled SOULM8TE, a thriller that expands the M3GAN universe and is set for release on January 2, 2026. Donald Sutherland, the beloved actor who starred in scores of films such as The Dirty Dozen, MASH, Klute, Animal House, Ordinary People, Pride & Prejudice, and The Hunger Games franchise and won an Emmy for Citizen X, died last Thursday in Miami after a long illness. He was 88. HBO has officially greenlit the first show under DC Studios titled Lanterns. The series has been given an eight episode straight-to-series order by HBO with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan Majors is set to star in the revenge thriller Merciless, which is based on an original screenplay by Frank Hannah. Martin Villeneuve, the younger brother of filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, will direct. The film will mark Majors' first role since his third degree assault and harassment conviction earlier this year. Paramount has released the first trailer for Smile 2, the follow up to Parker Finn's 2022 horror hit. The film debuts in theaters on October 18. DC Comics pulled all unpublished cover artwork by artist Francesco Mattina after Adi Granov and Scott Williams accused him of using AI in recently released cover artwork. Williams is the inking partner of publisher and CCO, Jim Lee at DC. A Spaceballs sequel is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Josh Gad is set to star, and will produce alongside Mel Brooks. Patrick Dempsey has joined the cast of Dexter: Original Sin as a series regular. He is set to portray Aaron Spencer, the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Christian Slater's Harry Morgan. Sources tell Deadline that Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan are in negotiations to star in Season 2 of the Netflix and A24 anthology series Beef. The roles Isaac and Mulligan would be playing were rumored to be for Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, but that ultimately did not come to fruition. Apple Films has acquired the rights to The Wives, an original film produced by A24 and starring Jennifer Lawrence. The Wives is described as a murder mystery inspired by The Real Housewives franchise.

It's time for us to enter the breakout year in the career of Roy Scheider! And we kick things off with Scheider's small supporting role in Alan J. No one embodies the concept of change and durability in one lifetime like Jane Fonda. She started out as what some might call a Nepo Baby, the daughter of Henry Fonda, an actor who was considered Hollywood royalty. During her long career, Jane Fonda has appeared in more than 50 films, earning Oscars for Best Actress for her roles in Klute and Coming Home. Fonda became as famous for her politics as she did for her acting roles. Her anti-Vietnam war activities earned her the nick name of Hanoi Jane. She also became a fitness guru. Now that her successful Netflix series Grace and Frankie has ended, Fonda says she's devoting herself to combating the climate crisis. And as an 86-year three-time divorcee, Fonda says she's no longer interested in romance or sex. She just wants to make the world a better place. ”Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guests on today's show are two more of my favorite people in the optometry space: Drs. Chris Wolfe and Kyle Klute. Although, this is a bit of a different episode in that they're not only guests on the show…they're guest hosting the show! This is another 20/20 Money Takeover and basically a response to the first takeover episode I release with Drs. Jennifer Stewart and Jeremy Ciano (link here). Kyle was kind enough to reach out to me after the original takeover episode aired and shared some perspectives and opinions on the show and, in true transparency, included Jeremy and Jennifer on the message thread. There was a lot of great convos had and I thought that having Kyle and Chris on the show to talk about “the response” to the first takeover was a great idea. What neither of the duos know, though, is that I already have an idea for a 3rd episode: getting the four of them together on a virtual roundtable and just hitting record. No agenda. No topics. No script. Not even really a time limit. Just the four of them and a couple of microphones. It'll be like a battle royale, optometry-podcast style. Long time listeners will know that my introductions usually give you a bit of an insight into the topics that'll be discussed on this show. Not this one. Again, just like the first one, I'm listening to it for the first time right alongside you. I'm excited to hear what they talked about and will be curious to hear your feedback (if you're so inclined). If you do have feedback for the show (on this episode or any other episodes), you can always email the show at podcast@integratedpwm.com.
