Ag commodity marketing is too complex, largely misunderstood, and the industry is full of products and services you probably don't even need to profitably market your grain. That truth bomb — along with many more — is courtesy of Joe Vaclavik of Standard Grain. Mr. Vaclavik, a former grain trader turned commodity marketing commentator, says there are only three things a farmer needs to be profitable. Conversely, there are nine things almost no farmer EVER needs to use, including options trading, long range weather prognosticators, and exotic grain marketing contracts. Joe keeps it simple. And blunt. If you're thin-skinned, don't tune into this episode. For the rest of you in Ag, enjoy! Sponsored by: Pattern Ag pattern.ag Redox Bio-Nutrients redoxgrows.com Truterra truterraag.com

Careful consideration is needed on numerous variables, such as interest rates, storage cost, average selling price, tax considerations, and cash flow needs. They continue the conversation around some potential demand improvements, which could possibly include some South American weather challenges during their growing season. They wrap up the conversation discussing some of the technicals around possible price movement and ask the question: “What is a low price in the future?” “Have we reached a new plateau which could limit the downside?

Joe Vaclavik with Standard Grain talks with Chris as we head into a New Year! The conversation begins with a review of 2022. There were a number of market drivers that Joe discusses, including inflation, the war in Ukraine, drought in the west, energy prices, and rising interest rates. Joe transitions into some of the opportunities and challenges that we will see as we head into 2023 both short-term and long-term. Short term, conversation revolves around paying attention to South American weather, the Russia, Ukraine war, and the January USDA report. From a long-term perspective, we still have drought in many areas, continued interest rate hikes potentially, and acreage decision making with corn still showing much larger profit opportunities than soybeans for most producers currently. Shay Foulk with Ag View Solutions predicts cost of corn production for 2023 will average $5.35 per bushel. That number is an all time high and it's due to an increase in every crop input from nitrogen to diesel to labor. The story is the same for the other major commodity of soybeans, and presumably for wheat as well. The reason: crop input price inflation. The good news: farms are still predicted to turn a profit in 2023, helped by high commodity prices. And, these are nominal dollars, not real dollars (we'll explain!). What does all this mean to you, me, the rest of the Ag sector and our consumers? Shay joins Joe Vaclavik of Standard Grain to shed light on marketplace outlook amid the most expensive crop ever planted looming this spring.
