This week on bigcitysmalltown, we examine how San Antonio residents are rethinking their relationship with nature—starting in their own front yards. Guest host Cory Ames interviews Monika Maeckle, author, naturalist, and founder of the Texas Butterfly Ranch and the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival. Maeckle's new book, Plants with Purpose, explores why traditional lawns may be a liability for San Antonio, and how reimagining our landscaping choices can have a measurable impact on water conservation, biodiversity, and the city's resilience to climate extremes. In this conversation, Cory and Monika discuss:• The hidden costs of maintaining lawns in San Antonio's climate• How native and well-adapted plants can contribute to local ecosystems• Strategies for residents—homeowners, renters, and educators—to build greener, more sustainable neighborhoods• Accessible starting points for those new to native gardening, including resources and recommended nurseries• The cultural and historical narratives tied to landscaping in Texas• Examples of successful lawn-to-native transformations around the city, and how attitudes on “curb appeal” are beginning to shiftThe episode also addresses the broader implications for water policy, environmental education, and the role of public utilities and HOAs in shaping San Antonio's urban landscape. For residents seeking practical steps—and inspiration—on making their homes and communities more sustainable, Maeckle's perspective is rooted in decades of local experience. You can find more information about Plants with Purpose, local events, and suggested resources at bigcitysmalltown.com.RECOMMENDED NEXT LISTEN:▶️ #125. Monarch creatures may be small creatures, but they go on an epic adventure every year across much of the globe. Now, the federal government is stepping in. In December, the Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to list monarch butterflies as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. But since then, the new Trump administration has begun discussing rescinding the definition of “harm” in the act. That could remove certain protections for all listed species and their habitats.

Over winter they survive by gathering in clusters on tall trees or in urban green spaces but there's been a noticeable drop off in those habitats. Each year, millions of migratory eastern monarch butterflies embark on a breathtaking 3,000-mile migration from North America to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, where they hibernate in the towering Oyamel fir forests. But this iconic species is in trouble.  WWF's research conducted with conservation partners since the early 2000s shows that the eastern monarch population has been trending downward for years. And while the latest report released by WWF and the Government of Mexico found that the population nearly doubled during the 2024-2025 winter, this latest finding is still far below the long-term average.  In this episode of Nature Breaking, host Seth Larson speaks with Court Whelan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Natural Habitat Adventures, about the wonders of the monarch's migration, the threats they face, and the conservation efforts bringing hope for their future. Lots of panic questions about Monarchs this year: in Auckland they are recorded as “pretty rare”, whereas in Christchurch I see them quite regularly and they're doing fine in my garden. There are always some troubles with wasps. These predators are quite keen to chew the monarch caterpillars to pieces and take the protein back to the wasp nest as food for their larvae. It sounds awful and it looks awful; the common-German wasps (and Paper wasps) are, after all, imported pests that don't belong here. Keep your plants with caterpillars under netting; the wasps can not access them. Another trick is to grow your swan plants in large pots, which can be moved to new sites when wasps discover the precious cargo; the wasp's GPS system is disrupted when you change the position of the swan plants. Running out of food is often bad news – caterpillars starving Always keep an extra plant or two under curtain netting, so female monarchs can't lay eggs on those spare food plants!! It also pays to reduce the number of eggs/caterpillars per plant (birth-control) I must confess: I had some trouble managing the number of caterpillars this year: they we sometimes eating the tops of the naked swanplants… and in pairs!! I tend to keep my caterpillars inside the tunnel house, so that the female monarchs couldn't get at them to lay more and more eggs “Go Fly to Auckland and Do something with your Life” is what I usually say… Sometimes caterpillars are found limp and dying This is often caused by predation by brown soldier bugs (Cermatulus nasalis) who stick their sucking tubes into the caterpillars and slowly such them dry. Look for the soldier bugs (brown version of the garden stink bug!!) and get rid of them! Accidents do happen, especially when the last instar caterpillar does its very last change from Caterpillar to Chrysalis. That in itself is a tricky manoeuvre: the caterpillar hangs from a small patch of silk while it takes its skin of. The trick is then to hook its chrysalis “claws” into the same white silken pad, so it can hang there as long as it takes to change into an adult butterfly. There are a few videos that capture the way a caterpillar becomes a chrysalis; have a look at how the caterpillar manages that without falling. But sometimes things go horribly wrong and if you discover a fallen chrysalis soon after the accident happened, you can carefully pick that very fragile creature up and literally hang it back where it needs to be… Very delicate “First Aid”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The monarch butterfly is popular and currently in the news a lot. You might think that we know all there is to know about it, but there are many mysteries remaining, particularly about their migration and how they use their habitat. This may be more so for the western population that overwinters in California. Radio tracking has long been used for studying the movement and habitat use of bigger animals. Advances in this technology mean it is emerging as a tool that can provide scientists with some answers about tiny animals too.To explore how radio tracking — also called radio telemetry — can be used with monarchs, we are joined by Ashley Fisher. Ashley is an endangered species conservation biologist and a monarch overwintering specialist with the Xerces Society. Based near the overwintering sites in California, Ashley manages Xerces' overwintering habitat database and helps facilitate research projects, working with Xerces partnering organizations and universities. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's Chief Conservation Officer Ron Leathers for a conversation with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Sergio Pierluissi and AnnMarie Krmppotich about the Service's announcement last week proposing the monarch butterfly be listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. The group talks about what this proposed listing means, what it doesn't mean, and what role PF & QF can play in creating habitat for monarch butterflies and upland birds. Episode Highlights: • The group discusses public land and private land opportunities to improve grasslands habitat for monarchs, as well as for pheasants, quail, and prairie grouse. • Learn more about the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's announcement about the status of monarch butterflies at www.fws.gov/monarch and submit comments at https://www.regulations.gov/commenton/FWS-R3-ES-2024-0137-0001. onX Hunt is a proud supporter of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever and they want to thank everyone who gives back to the birds we all love to hunt and the places they call home. Monarch butterfly populations have plummeted due to habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change. In early December, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is going to decide whether the monarch should be listed under the Endangered Species Act. If that comes to pass, the migratory butterfly would be one of the most widespread species to receive this listing. Want to hear more on the animals that surround us?
