March Madness is almost upon us, which means basketball arenas across the country will be filled with the thunderous roar of fans and the surprisingly loud squeaks of basketball shoes. At his first NBA game, physicist Adel Djellouli was surprised by the constant noise from the court and wondered, why do basketball shoes squeak? Turns out, the physics of a squeak involves lightning bolts and earthquakes. Host Flora Lichtman talks with Djellouli about his research and the joy of investigating seemingly simple questions. Guest: Dr. Adel Djellouli is an experimental physicist at Harvard University.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Subscribe to this podcast. Why wouldn't he return after the Olympics?Brett explains why this logic is flawed, and why you should have no problem with Landy's return to the ice representing his country. 34:02 - The NBA overhauled the All-Star Game format in an attempt to make it competitive. This week's episode is the final Veg Grower Podcast of 2025, and I wanted to take a step back and reflect on what has been a huge year here in the kitchen garden and down on the allotment. From new systems and new beds, to challenges with drought, job changes, and the reminder of just how powerful growing food can be for our mental health, this episode is very much about looking at what worked, what didn't, and what I've learned along the way. Kitchen Garden Update 2025 has been a brilliant year for the kitchen garden. Being able to step straight outside and spend even a few minutes tidying, mulching or weeding has made a massive difference, especially during busy periods. One of the biggest upgrades this year was installing an AutoPot system in the greenhouse, and it has more than paid for itself. Tomatoes, cucumbers and other greenhouse crops have thrived with very little intervention, producing an abundance of food for minimal effort. Other highlights from the kitchen garden include: Adding new beds and keeping a steady flow of crops coming in Growing perennial crops like asparagus and rhubarb from seed Successful straw bale gardening, once the bales were properly conditioned using a high-nitrogen feed Growing food from supermarket produce, including potatoes, garlic, ginger and herbs Beyond the harvests, the kitchen garden has played a huge role in supporting my mental health this year. During times of change and disruption, simply being outside, focused on small achievable jobs, made a real difference. Allotment Update Down on the allotment, 2025 was all about productivity, resilience and learning how to work with less time available. One of the standout successes this year has been using straw as a mulch. At around £3.50 per bale, it's been a cost-effective way to protect soil, retain moisture during a very dry year, and massively improve yields – particularly with potatoes. Other key lessons and highlights include: Producing far more of our own compost using large corrugated iron compost bins Accepting that some crops struggled in the dry conditions, particularly beans and peas Seeing brassicas, potatoes and fruit crops really thrive despite the lack of rain Gradually improving problem areas and boundaries over winter The goal for 2026 is clear: add even more organic matter, improve soil structure, and push productivity even further. Recipe of the Week – Bubble and Squeak This week's recipe is a proper post-Christmas classic: Bubble and Squeak. It's a fantastic way to use up leftover roast potatoes and vegetables, lightly mashed, mixed together and fried until crisp and golden. Perfect with an egg for breakfast, or served alongside cold meats – and it freezes beautifully too. You'll find the full recipe on the website. £5,000 Food Growing Challenge Every year I aim to grow £5,000 worth of food, based on supermarket prices. While I didn't quite hit the target in 2025, we still managed an impressive £4,500 worth of home-grown food. Fruit crops were the real stars this year, with tomatoes, peppers, chillies, cucumbers and soft fruit delivering huge value – and there's plenty of scope to push that total even higher next year. Wrapping Up 2025 As I say goodbye to 2025, I want to thank everyone who has listened, commented, shared the podcast, or supported the show through the Supporters Club. In this deeply personal Sunday solo, Jane shares the story of her beloved Domino's sudden passing — and the extraordinary signs he sent from the other side. For long-time listeners, Domino has always been “one of the dogs under the desk,” a constant companion in the Medium Curious studio. This week, Jane opens up about his transition, the stunning validations that came through a trusted animal communicator, and the powerful reminders our pets offer us about love, grief, and what happens when they leave their bodies. Jane shares: How her journey with animal communication began The wild, specific evidence that first proved to her that pets absolutely communicate What Domino expressed about his transition in real time The moment she asked him, “What will your sign be?” How rainbows, and “Kiko” — showed up instantly Incredible synchronicities involving Guatemala, where Domino was born How her other dog, Kalea, responded (and what she said telepathically!) England, 2021: Penny and David Jackson were your usual couple living out their retirement in the sleepy countryside town of Berrow, Somerset. That was until one night, when Penny suddenly snapped and murdered David after an argument over her choice to serve Bubble and Squeak to accompany their steak dinner…a choice David didn't approve of.But as if her reason for attacking him wasn't bizarre enough, a released 999 call and bodycam footage of her arrest would only add to the obscurity of this murder. Only, was this footage that's since gone viral really all that funny and bizarre, or were we watching a tired victim, openly and finally, snap?Resources:Love Respect https://loverespect.co.uk/https://linktr.ee/eleanornealeresourcesWatch OUTLORE Podcast:https://www.youtube.com/@EleanorNealeFollow Me Here for Updates & Short Form Content:InstagramTikTok

Bible Reading: Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 45:7; 1 Corinthians 10:10-12"Hey, Amy! Don't forget to get the wastebasket from my room," said Greyson as he opened the door to go out.Amy scowled at him. "I hate taking out the trash." She turned to her mother. "Greyson always gets the easy stuff to do while I have to tramp around the house collecting smelly old garbage!""You chose that job for this month," Mom reminded her. "You said you were tired of dusting and folding laundry and that Greyson always got the easy jobs--like emptying the trash." Amy muttered to herself as she left to start collecting wastebaskets.A little later, the back door squeaked loudly as Greyson pushed it open and came back in. "That squeaky door is driving me crazy!" Amy said crossly. "Quit going in and out, Greyson."Her brother grinned and turned back toward the door. "I think I left something outside. I'll be back in a minute." He swung the door back and forth."Mom, make him stop!" Amy whined, covering her ears."Enough, Greyson," said Mom. "Quit teasing."Just then Dad opened the squeaky door. "I guess it's about time for me to oil these hinges," he said. "They're complaining pretty loudly." He let the door squeak shut behind him as he walked in. "Remember the Bible verses we read for devotions last night--the ones about the Israelites after they left Egypt? They complained a lot--just like this screen door. It needs oil, and I think they needed to apply oil to their lives by remembering God was with them and promised to take care of them. Perhaps that would be what the Bible calls the oil of joy.""Yeah. Some people around here need some of that oil too," said Greyson, giving his sister a grin.Amy sighed. "I guess I have been pretty squeaky lately.""Well, you can apply oil to that squeak by remembering the joy you have in Jesus," said Dad. "He saved us from sin so we could be filled with the joy of knowing Him for all eternity. We can experience that joy by remembering He loves us and is always with us--even when things don't go our way." Amy straightened up. "Okay…sorry for complaining. Now, who has trash they'd like me to get rid of?"–Maria I. Sellers How About You?Do you complain a lot? Are you constantly telling those around you about every little thing that isn't exactly the way you'd like it? If so, you need to apply some oil of joy to your life. Remember how much Jesus loves you and all that He has done for you. Instead of complaining, praise Him and trust Him to help you learn to be content with what He's given you.Today's Key Verse:Do everything without complaining or arguing. (ERV) (Philippians 2:14 )Today's Key Thought:Don't complain
