With the new year, we are able to start a new slate. The common theme with Grain Marketing is we all can be guilty of looking back and not pulling the trigger as some opportunities. Grain marketing can be hard, when to pull the trigger, what price, what contract, how much? All these factors can cause a big emotional toll on some. Part of my hope is to help take these things off your shoulder. Forward contracting can be a huge help in being able to lock in some profit. If we know a break-even, locking in the price can help ensure you are able to make money.

Media Utilization: Dr. Anderson emphasized the importance of using media to reach a broader audience. This approach not only enhances credibility but also effectively disseminates knowledge.Teaching and Extension: Transition from 100% extension work to incorporating teaching at Oklahoma State University (OSU) allowed Dr. Anderson to influence both students and farmers, providing a platform for broader impact.Marketing Strategies: The "third, a third, and a third" strategy for selling wheat is a notable contribution. This method helps farmers manage price volatility by spreading sales over different periods.Early Career: Dr. Anderson started his extension career in Kentucky, where he first appeared on TV with Ira Massey on "Tabacco Talk." This experience underscored the power of media in agricultural extension.Sales Class Success: His sales class at OSU, including the "Ready Set Sale" event, has been highly successful. Ag commodity marketing is too complex, largely misunderstood, and the industry is full of products and services you probably don't even need to profitably market your grain. That truth bomb — along with many more — is courtesy of Joe Vaclavik of Standard Grain. Mr. Vaclavik, a former grain trader turned commodity marketing commentator, says there are only three things a farmer needs to be profitable. Conversely, there are nine things almost no farmer EVER needs to use, including options trading, long range weather prognosticators, and exotic grain marketing contracts. Joe keeps it simple. And blunt. If you're thin-skinned, don't tune into this episode. For the rest of you in Ag, enjoy! Sponsored by: Pattern Ag pattern.ag Redox Bio-Nutrients redoxgrows.com Truterra truterraag.com

Inside Agriculture Segment 3
In this week's episode, Tracy speaks to David Derwin in our “Grain & Cattle Marketing Update: Fall 2023.” It's hard to know what to do when markets are continually changing. But as we all know, markets do just that; they always go up and down. In today's episode, David shares a few insights about what producers can do for their grain and cattle marketing in fall 2023. David gives our audience a brief overview of current market conditions and prices. Many producers are finding themselves with better-than-expected yields and have to sell for bin space or cash flow purposes. But many are not necessarily seeing the price they want. David shares his thoughts on this. Prices have come down a lot for wheat, corn, and barley. Durum prices are strong, and oilseed prices are still decent. David speaks to the different marketing strategies for each commodity. Tracy asks David about marketing and hedging strategies used so far this crop year. They discuss high-interest rates and their impact on selling and storage decisions. Given the high cattle prices, David discusses some hedging alternatives for beef producers. Don't miss this week's episode, where we chat about all things grain and cattle marketing. ...............................
In this week's episode, Tracy speaks to returning guest Billi J. Miller in this episode titled “Beautiful Farm Stories.” When Billi married her husband, a 4th generation Canadian farmer, she noticed there were very little photographs of their rich, 100-year farming heritage. As a photographer she felt called to do something about it. Harnessing her entrepreneurial spirit, she created a successful business as a photographer and writer. In 2016, she authored the first of a two-book series about the remarkable contributions of farmwives. Then while the World was locked down, Billi put pen to paper again and wrote “Bubbles Took A Trip” and “Farm Kids: Stories From Our Lives.” We are excited to have Billi back on the show, speaking about her books, why she wrote them, and the mission behind her work. If you are from a farm family, Billi's books will find a special place in your heart. Tune into today's episode to hear Billi share more, and don't forget to pick up your copies today. ............................... Nick Tsiolis is the founder of Farmer's Keeper, a grain merchandising company in Chicago. Nick and his team provide grain merchandising advice and assistance to farmers of all sizes, and they are especially helpful to those farmers on the bubble who are thinking about marketing some or all of their grain in the futures markets. I like to say that I can podcast about agriculture because I know a little about a lot. However, futures and the marketing of grain has always been a blind spot for me, so I was eager to speak with Nick and to learn more about how this is done.
Sound Agriculture: https://www.sound.ag/Farmers Risk: https://farmersrisk.ag/ Today's episode features Dakota Hoben, co-founder and CEO of Farmers Risk. This is an interesting look at a new startup that is taking on a complicated topic: grain marketing. As many of you know, buying and selling grain is where I started my career, so I'm always curious about companies in this space, but frankly, always a little skeptical as well. Just knowing how many variables are at play in these decisions, not least of which being the farmer's emotions. But that said, I am impressed by Dakota, and the approach they are taking, and I think he makes some really strong points in this interview. Dakota knew from a young age that the only industry he was truly passionate about was agriculture. Growing up on a grain and livestock farm in Southeast Iowa before heading to Iowa State to study Agricultural Business and International Agriculture, he watched family, neighbors, and other farmers ride the marketing roller coaster, but didn't know he would become an integral part of the solution to this problem. Before Farmers Risk, Dakota and co-founder Eric Barnard were co-workers at Granular.
