The first time he attended one school for a whole year was his senior year of high school in Roswell, New Meixco, where he also discovered his first library. and world literature. A fanatuc fan of movies and magazines, he discovered theater when he washed dishes at a summer theater in Maine. On his way back to New Mexico, he followed a cute boy into a magical coffeehouse in Greenwich Village called the Caffe Cino. It was the first Off-Off Broadway theater and the birthplace of gay theater, where Patrick did his first plays. As Off-Off Broadway grew, Patrick was called by Samuel French "New York's most-produced playwright of the 1960s." The international success of his play "Kennedy's Children" led to a decade of lecturing at high schools, colleges and small theaters nationwide. He retired in 1990 and moved to Los Angeles, where he vegetated until 2012 when yioung entrepreneurs Jason Jenn, Ian MacKInnon and Helene Udy persuaded him to sing. He has published perhaps a hundred plays, as well as poetry and a novel. A young director, Jon Pratt, plans a season of Patrick's one-acts. He is as surprised as you are.

Jon Pratt recently retired as Executive Director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. Jon was the founding director, working in that role since 1987. The world of collective action by and for nonprofits has evolved in many ways since that time. It has also kept some very solid foundational elements through those decades. Host Steve Boland talks to Jon about this history of building one of the largest state nonprofit associations, and what we can learn about the future from that work. Some things have stayed the same - though the current web-based job-board started out as a literal bulletin board at first. Other issues of interest to the nonprofit economy continue to change and may point to new challenges in the coming years.   More information at NextInNonprofits.com/podcast.

Jon Pratt builds community, influence and power every day. He leads the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, a trade association for organizations that provide services in the arts, education, affordable housing, health and the environment. Just as chambers of commerce represent the interests of the business community, MCN amplifies the voices of the nonprofit community. It is where members learn about legislation affecting their mission and tax status, new research from the field, and resources for building advocacy capacities. And their considerable collective power is making an impact. MCN members meet regularly with elected officials, identify unmet needs and recommend policy solutions to solve them. Now they are upping their game with Grant Adviser. This new initiative will resonate with anyone who has ever applied for a grant or reported to a funder on grant outcomes. Think of Grant Adviser as Yelp for philanthropy. Nonprofits provide anonymous feedback about foundations, from the application process to their communications with applicants. And foundations are (mostly) taking the feedback seriously. There’s more to come from MCN and Grant Advisor. That is always the case when change makers are the helm.

Kari recently published a blog post, Why Donor Advised Funds Aren’t Really for Grantwriters (But Can Be…) at GrantAdvisor.org. An increasing amount of philanthropic giving is moving through Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), and this raises more questions about the nature of DAFs, transparency in giving, and supporting charitable work in communities. Kari and Jon join host Steve Boland to talk about a special working group around DAFs convened at MCN, how nonprofits can use tools like NOZAsearch and DAFdirect links to improve their success with DAF donors, and efforts around legislation on how DAFs may change in the future. Scripture reveals that Jesus, from the time of his incarnation, is both fully God and fully man.   The Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD produced the Chalcedonian Creed to counter the false explanations of the union of the two natures of Christ and the down-right heretical teachings concerning the incarnation of Christ.  Four key statements can be drawn from this creed: 1.     Christ is fully (perfectly) God. 2.     Christ is fully (perfectly) human. 3.     The divine nature and human nature are united in the person of Jesus Christ.   4.     Jesus Christ is one person.   These four statements can be placed along each side of a box.  This box is the Chalcedonian Box. As long as any teaching, anecdote, or analogy of the person and work of Christ maintains that Jesus is fully God, fully man, one person, with two natures, it lands within this box.  When one of these doctrines is distorted, or worse, erased, the teaching lands outside of the box is appropriately labeled a heresy.   Alan Shlemon, a speaker, teacher, and writer, for Stand to Reason, created a slide for a presentation he gave on the incarnation of Christ.  At the center of the slide is the Chalcedonian Box with a clipart image of Jesus in the middle of the box.  Outside of the box lies DC's Batman and Superman and Marvel's the Hulk and Spider-Man.   Wes and Andy discuss this excellent image Shlemon created!  Jon Pratt sits like a fly on the wall once again.   How are Batman, Superman, the Hulk, and Spider-Man not good analogies to use to explain how Jesus can be one person with natures?  Why does it matter if we are missing the mark of Scripture with these comic book analogies?  Also, more importantly, what Christological heresies align with these modern day comic book superhero analogies to let us know that people have actually taught Christ in these throughout history, and in some cases still do!

Today we take another cultural departure from Washington, DC and chat with Jon Pratt of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. The Council exists to make nonprofits more effective and helps share resources, education, and training among nonoprofits working in Minnesota. This helps their member organizations stay current on trends and technology even while focusing primarily on their core issues. Minnesota as a whole and the nonprofits working there benefit from a unique state tradition -- the Keystone Awards. Find out how charitable organizations are supplementing their fundraising and maybe something you hear in today's episode will trigger a great actionable idea for your organization. Jon Pratt is the executive director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. He has worked at Minnesota Public Interest Research Group as an attorney and lobbyist, as regional director at the Youth Project, and as director for the Philanthropy Project. The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) was founded in 1987 to meet the increasing information needs of nonprofits and to convene nonprofits to address issues facing the sector. It is the largest state association of nonprofits in the U.S. Through MCN, nonprofits join together across interest areas to work on issues of common concern to all.
