This week Johnny C has a special guest from his early days at NYU and the New York City theater. Eric Bogosian is one of the most prolific actors/playwrights today. You may have seen him recently on Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire. Eric Bogosian was born in Boston and grew up in Woburn, Massachusetts. After graduating from Woburn Memorial High School in 1971, he attended the University of Chicago and graduated from Oberlin College in 1976, whereupon he moved to New York City. In New York he was hired by the Kitchen as an assistant, established a dance series there and after five years left to devote all his energies to his theater work. Between 1976 and 1982, Bogosian wrote, directed and/or starred in over sixteen productions Off-Off-Broadway. In 1982, he toured the Midwest with Fab Five Freddy and the Rock Steady Crew. In the early 1980's Eric Bogosian became well-known in New York for his intense one-man theater pieces, winning the Obie Award three times as well as the Drama Desk Award. In 1983, after attending one of his one-man shows, Larry Cohen cast Bogosian as the homicidal director in his low-budget film Special Effects (1984). Four years later, Bogosian's Pulitzer-nominated play, (in which he also starred), "Talk Radio" caught the attention of the greater film world. Robert Altman cast Bogosian in his film of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1988) while producer Edward R. Pressman obtained the rights to the play and brought it to director Oliver Stone. Stone and Bogosian adapted the play script to film script, Bogosian again played the lead and the film of Talk Radio (1988) opened in December 1988. Bogosian received the prestigious "Silver Bear" at the 1989 Berlin Festival for his work on the film. After the release of "Talk Radio", Bogosian worked regularly as an actor in film and television while remaining very active in the theater. 1994 was a banner year in which Bogosian co-starred with Steven Seagal in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) as the diabolical "Travis Dane", was featured in Dolores Claiborne (1995), staged another one-man show Off-Broadway and authored the play, "subUrbia" directed by Robert Falls and produced by Lincoln Center Theater, ("subUrbia" was adapted for film by director Richard Linklater). Around this time, Bogosian would also cameo appearances in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry (1997), Atom Egoyan's Ararat (2002), Cindy Sherman's Office Killer (1997) and Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996). In the 1990's Bogosian continued to write for film and TV, adapting his own work as well as receiving assignments from studios. He began to write for television when he was invited to co-create a show for Steven Spielberg: High Incident (1996) in 1996. As an actor, in 2003, he co-starred with Val Kilmer as the notorious Eddie Nash in James Cox's Wonderland (2003). In 2006 he was invited onboard Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001) as Captain Danny Ross (where he appeared in over sixty episodes). In 2010, Bogosian starred on Broadway in Donald Margulies' "Time Stands Still" with Laura Linney, Brian d'Arcy James, Alicia Silverstone and Christina Ricci. In 2013, Bogosian created a website featuring his numerous monologues performed by notable actors. Visit 100monologues.com to view the complete catalog of over 75 monologues. More recently, Bogosian landed a series of featured television roles on Netflix's The Get Down (2016), Showtime's Billions (2016) and as Senator Gil Eavis on HBO's Succession (2018). Bogosian has been featured in Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems (2019) (starring Adam Sandler). In addition to his numerous plays, Bogosian is the author of three novels "Mall", "Wasted Beauty" and "Perforated Heart." His non-fiction history, Operation Nemesis: The Assassination Plot that Avenged the Armenian Genocide was published by Little, Brown in 2015. He lives in New York City with his wife, director Jo Bonney with whom he has two children; Travis Bogosian and Harry Bogosian Produced by John C McGinleye and Angie Quidim Copyright TME Productions 2023-2024 all rights reserved May not be used without permission. On this week's episode, I'm joined by John DeVore, author of Theatre Kids: A True Tale of Off-Off Broadway. In addition to discussing his life in the arts and the different species of theatre children—from the stage to politics to religion, theatre kids come in all shapes and size—we also talked a bit about the evolution of media in the post-9/11, pre-iPhone age. And we went back to one of my favorite topics: why no one can behave themselves in public these days! Get off our lawns! If you enjoyed this episode, you should pick up a copy of John's book; it's a quick read with just the right amount of melancholy. And please share this episode with a friend!
Taking its title from the mythical Egyptian afterlife, The Duat is a psychological portrait of Cornelius Johnson, a FBI counterintelligence officer played by Philadelphia favorite Frank X, in a battle for his very soul. Using spoken word, North African drumming, and gorgeous choreography, this thrilling world premiere is a poetic and virtuosic story of redemption.Roger Q. Mason (they/them) is a writer and performer who uses the lens of history to disrupt the biases that divide rather than unite us. Their playwriting has been seen on Broadway (Circle in the Square Reading Series); Off and Off-Off-Broadway; and regionally. Mason's World Premiere of Lavender Men was lauded by the Los Angeles Times as “evoking the mingled visions of Suzan-Lori Parks, Jeremy O. Harris and Michael R. Jackson.” They are a recipient of the inaugural Catalyst Fellowship, awarded by the Dramatists Guild Foundation, in celebrations of theatre makers whose work impacts social justice and civic change through art. We go BACK to Arrakis, desert planet, homeworld of the spice and the Fremen and keeper of Shai Hulud. We're joined again for the journey by major spice-head John DeVore to discuss Villeneuve's two films in relation to Lynch's 1984 version and Frank Herbert's book. Along the way, we consider the worm Uber, the possibility of bad trips with the Water of Life, the lack of St. Alia of the Knife, the deliberate backgrounding of the more mystical elements of the novel, and the film's magnificent score. Repeat after us: "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion... fear is the mindkiller... long live the fighters... and power over spice is power over all!" Preorder John's book, "Theater Kids: A True Tale of Off Off Broadway" now!
THANK YOU Lucinda Carr for being my very SECOND guest in 2020 on On The Call, which began the same time as the pandemic. SINCE THEN, 3 things Lucinda has accomplished are: - Wrote, produced and performed her own one-woman Off-Off Broadway show "My Life is Not My Own - a hour with Harriet Tubman AND received the award for best biographical show in the 2023 United Solo Fall Festival. -Played a supporting role in 12 Days of Christmas Eve with Kelsey Grammar -Played a mother in a scene with Gabrielle Union and Ed Harris in the movie Riff Raff. From Computer Programmer to Author to Publisher, to Mary Kay Rep, when Lucinda decided to follow her passion to become an Actor, things geared up for her. Since our first season's broadcast in 2020, Lucinda rebuilt her website adding new pictures. She has had many self tape auditions and has been taking scene study with LS Studios out of Atlanta since 1/2021. She was offered 10 roles since the pandemic started, 6 in 2021. Lucinda had to turn down a TV show because she was shooting a commercial in Florida. Of the 9 roles she accepted, 3 were in the south. One was for an upcoming series on BET, which she booked, when she relocated to Atlanta for 4 months. In addition she has had her availability checked several times, which is very encouraging. Can't wait to see what 2024 brings for her. Successful at her life's goals, yet happy to give, help, serve others throughout. Earlier this week, we compared the NBA to a reality show - now, watch and see what happens when reality turns into an Off-Off-Broadway production of ‘No City For Brotherly Love' as Charlotte and Amin act out James Harden's press conference welcoming him to Los Angeles and Joel Embiid's response to it all. If their acting doesn't pump you up, maybe a game of HYPE ME UP will! Charlotte hypes up the “best freaking duo” in the league with CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram, Billy Donovan becomes the first coach to be hyped up twice (but he needs it after Zach Lavine's recent comments). We also hype up Draymond Green, Bradley Beal, and Jordan Poole after after Amin's not-so-hype comments about him. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

From his first plays in the early 1960s to his death in 2020, playwright Terrence McNally has been a force in American theater. Beginning in the Off-Off Broadway movement, McNally's writing continually reflected a changing culture, from opposition to the Vietnam War through the emergence of AIDS and gay rights. His stage plays, musicals, and operas continue to be performed internationally, and they remain the work of a consummate artist, delving into the human soul and fearlessly examining both the lighter and darker aspects of existence in an uncertain—and sometimes frightening—world. A Man of Much Importance looks at McNally's life and work against the backdrop of a dynamic theatrical culture, tracing the ways in which an artist grows and responds to his world. Based on extensive interviews with McNally, it also features interviews with many of the artists—actors, designers, and producers—with whom he's collaborated, including Nathan Lane, Chita Rivera, Audra McDonald, Christine Baranski, Kathy Bates, Swoosie Kurtz, John Glover, Joe Mantello, Arin Arbus, Paul Libin, Lynne Meadow, and many more. Christopher Byrne is an author and theater critic. He is a member of The Drama Desk and the American Theatre Critics Association. He began his career as a stage manager and producer and is a graduate of Boston University's College of Fine Arts. In his not-so-secret double life, he is a leading expert on toys and play, writing extensively (including seven books), speaking, and appearing on many television programs worldwide on the topic. He is the creator and host of The Playground Podcast, a B2B podcast for the international toy industry, as well as Voice Out Loud, a podcast amplifying diverse voices in the LGBTQ+community. The book is officially out on July 15, and it's available for pre-order.
Sally Plass joins Stephanie and Angela to talk about versatility, lifelong friendships and the Off and Off-Off Broadway movement. Sally is a pillar of the theatrical movement of the 70s, but as she says 'when you're in something, you don't see it.' Sally is still making theater as an actress, stage manager, designer or whatever is needed. She is the director of the Primary Stages Off-Broadway Oral History Project.Original Music by: Yah Supreme (Yahya Jeffries-El)

She was born in New York City and grew up in West Long Branch with a passion for singing/acting and sports. She began vocal training at age 8, and performed duets with the children's performer Jonathan Sprout on two of his albums. Upon entering Shore Regional High School, she joined Shore Players and won the part of Peter Pan, the only freshman to ever get the lead in a production. She brought all her varied skills to bear in her clinical work and was beloved by her patients, whom she helped immensely. In fact, her parents were so struck with her insight when she would talk about her work that Sharon never hesitated to refer patients to her. The feedback that Sharon always got was that Jackie was remarkable and gifted. Three years ago, Jackie fulfilled a childhood dream when she and Nick adopted a rescue puppy she named Pickles Sebastian, as she always said she would. To put it mildly, she was a devoted and wonderful mother to Pickles.Jackie loved growing up with her older sister Jamie whom she admired and adored, and her younger brother Matt, whom she greatly enjoyed, mothered, and frequently entertained. She will be immeasurably missed by them and by her parents, as well as by her three best friends from childhood Jen, Lauren, and Jamie, a friendship to which she brought infectious joy and unconditional love. Naomi Grossman joins me today to talk about her journey into acting and we also talk about American Horror Story and about how she got her role as Pepper. Naomi Grossman was a 2018 Primetime Emmy nominee for “Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama” for her role in Ctrl Alt Delete. Best known as the first crossover character, the fan-favorite “Pepper” on FX's hit anthology series, American Horror Story: Asylum & Freak Show, Naomi also appeared as a new character, the Satanist “Samantha Crowe” in the eighth season, Apocalypse, as well as “Rabid Ruth” in the spin-off series, American Horror Stories. Naomi made #5 of IMDb's “Top 10 Breakout Stars” after her STARmeter skyrocketed to #1, making her the most searched in its entire 8 million person database. Huffington Post, The Wrap, Screen Rant, and Syfy all ranked Pepper among “The Best AHS Characters Ever;” MTV named her their “#1 Good Guy;” Uproxx, their “#1 Most Tragic;” Geek Insider, a “Top 5 Most Underrated AHS Performer;” and Entertainment Weekly called her being cast in the role “The Best of 2012.” Fans may also recognize her from cameos in the following feature films: Table for Three, The Chair, 1BR, Sky Sharks, Bite Me, Painkillers, The Lurker, Murder RX, The Portal, Preacher Six, An Accidental Zombie (Named Ted), and Fear, Inc. Naomi prides herself on having paved her own, albeit unorthodox path to mainstream success by writing, producing and starring in several autobiographical solo shows. Her latest, Carnival Knowledge: Love, Lust, and other Human Oddities, enjoyed a twice-extended, sold-out run and rave reviews (“Recommended” by LA Weekly). It was then reprised at the world-famous fringe theatre festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it received more critical praise (4 stars: The Scotsman, Broadway Baby, Fringe Review) and a transfer to London's West End (Leicester Square Theatre). It later went on to have a successful run Off-Off Broadway. Naomi's first solo endeavor, Girl in Argentine Landscape, also received critical acclaim (LA Weekly, “Pick of the Week”) and earned her an LA Weekly Theatre Award nomination for best solo performance. Naomi toured with Girl… to Chicago's Single File Festival, the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival, the New York International Fringe Festival, and screened a subtitled video-version on the big screen in Argentina. Her numerous self-penned/produced, comedic shorts have screened at nationwide film festivals and are available for view on comedy sites like FunnyOrDie. Naomi is a theatre graduate of Northwestern University, and a veteran of the legendary Groundlings Sunday Company. https://naomigrossman.net

Absolutely loved having JoAnna Beckson on Dystopia Tonight. I had the pleasure of taking her Meisner class when I was a young comic and what I learned from her is invaluable both as a teacher and now as a friend. We discuss how she got into acting/directing, having the neighborhood kids put on a show she directed at the age of 5, to back packing through Europe, falling in love with another actor in her troupe, being trained by Sanford Meisner, auditioning, diving into teaching and directing, and working with comedians like myself, Joe Starr, Rob Bartlett, Ted Alexandro, Jim Gaffigan, Ray Romano, Dave Attell (the list goes on!) and how the business has and will continue to reshape itself after covid. Enjoy! Check out her official bio below: JoAnna Beckson was trained as an actress and teacher by Fred Kareman, William Esper and Sanford Meisner of the Neighborhood Playhouse. She has worked extensively as an actress and director both Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway in such theaters as The Ensemble Studio Theater, Intar II, The Working Theater and Woman's Interart. She is also a founding member of New York City's prestigious Circle Repertory Company's LAB. Along with being a consultant for Disney and Paramount Studios, JoAnna has maintained the dual career of Actress/Director and Teacher of acting in New York City for many years. “Say Something Funny”, an original dramedy she conceived, directed and co-produced at the Criterion Center-Broadway, was optioned for sitcom development by Nelle Nugent, a five-time Tony Award winning producer, and by Dick Clark Productions. JoAnna's involvement in the daily “business” of acting gives her special insight toward helping actors develop their craft and solve the problem of finding work. For the past fifteen years, JoAnna has also been an Adjunct Professor at New York University's School of Professional Studies as well as the Graduate Film Department at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. JoAnna also leads workshops at the School of Visual Arts, and the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts.

Actor Gabe Fazio attended Suffolk Community College before being accepted at The Actors Studio Drama School, where he received an MFA.
