Carl Roberts, Iwan Roberts and Sam Vokes discuss what Wales manager Craig Bellamy learned from the friendly defeat against Canada in Swansea. Have any of the youngsters or fringe players forced themselves into his plans for next month's crucial World Cup qualifier at home to Belgium.Swansea City, Wrexham and Cardiff City return to action this weekend for the first time since the end of the transfer window. The two Championship sides showed their intent with significant investment, giving both managers selection dilemmas for Saturday. Cardiff, meanwhile, put faith in their academy products - can their impressive early-season form continue? And will it even bring a manager of the month award for Brian Barry-Murphy?There was no break for Newport County, and no change in fortunes as new manager Dave Hughes suffered a fifth successive defeat. No such for worries for Sam's Gillingham, who continue to lead League Two.And it would be an episode without some mention of food. This week, Carl makes a shocking Roy Cropper comparison as he gets his teeth into Iwan's choice of sandwich.
With the Welsh Rugby Union considering reducing the number of Welsh rugby regions from four down to two, this episode explores some of the potential ramifications - not just for rugby, but for Rodney Parade, for Newport County, for the city centre and for local businesses. To get a full range of insights, we hear from Jamie (of the Dragons Lair podcast), Dan (from the Riverside Sports Bar) and from our own Ed.As well as unpacking some of the factors which might inform the WRU's decision, they discuss an excellent piece by Chris Kirwan for BBC Wales Sport about the issue, wonder where the Dragons' support might go if the team disappeared, consider the viability of Spytty Park as a football venue, and urge fans and local politicians to respond to the WRU's consultation document. As always, you can contact us via your social media platform of choice, and you can also donate as little as £2 via our ko-fi page towards our running costs - with a special gift coming next month for all monthly contributors. Scotty McGeorge, Tim Armitage and Gary Atyes dissect Cambridge United's second win in five days as they comfortably beat Newport County 2-0 on Saturday. We hear from Neil Harris and […]
Carl Roberts and former Wales internationals Sam Vokes and Iwan Roberts reflect on the weekend's results including the opening round of the Premier League. Cardiff got back to winning ways with a dominant 3-0 win over Rotherham and Swansea got their first league win after beating Sheffield United 1-0. Wrexham made it two successive losses in the Championship with a 3-2 defeat to West Brom while Newport County lost their first league game after a 2-1 loss at Grimsby.
Ian Hunt joins Iwan Roberts and Sam Vokes to review the opening weekend and preview the start of the Championship season. A youthful Cardiff City side made a winning start to their League One campaign as they beat Peterborough United at home 2-1 with both goals coming from academy products. Newport County drew 1-1 at home to Notts County in their League Two opener in a match which was delayed for an hour due to a medical emergency at the ground. Wrexham and Swansea City kick off their Championship campaigns this weekend. It's been a busy week for Wrexham who've completed the signings of England centre-back Conor Coady and Wales striker Kieffer Moore ahead of their opener away to Southampton. Meanwhile, Swansea travel to Middlesbrough as Alan Sheehan begins his first full season as head coach.
It's the beginning of a new era at Cardiff City and Newport County as both clubs prepare for life under new, and inexperienced, managers. The Bluebirds, playing in the third level of English football for the first time in 21 years, have opted for the blue side of Manchester by appointing for former Manchester City youth coach Brian Barry-Murphy. The Exiles, meanwhile, have gone for the red side by choosing former Manchester United youth coach Dave Hughes. Both clubs have ample room for improvement after hugely disappointing performances last season. But is there room for optimism this season?Wrexham and Swansea have another week's preparation for the start of the Championship season - and both have been making plenty of headlines over the summer. The Dragons have showed their promotion intent again with some eye-catching signings, and they're not finished yet. The Swans took everyone by surprise with the announcement that Snoop Dogg has become a co-owner as an investor. It's building up nicely to be another fascinating season for Welsh football.

This past Sunday, June 22nd was the Season 3 Premiere of HBO's hit series, The Gilded Age. Part of the success of this show is the viewing audience's fascination of this time period - a time of rapid change and immense wealth in the United States - and the grand mansions of the time located in Newport, Rhode Island.I thought my listeners would be interested in going behind the scenes - to learn more about this time of great change, wealth, power and drama in American History - and who better to give us a view into this world and history, than Trudy Coxe, the CEO and Executive Director of the Preservation Society of Newport County. In this episode, Trudy and I talk about the "Gilded Age" - this time of transformation following the Civil War where the railroads, oil, banking, created the Robber Barons and the rise of families like the Vanderbilts, Goulds, Astors. We explore the similarities between the show and real like characters - for example, Bertha Russell and Alva Vanderbilt and how the show's creator, Julian Fellowes, went to great lengths to make certain that he was getting the historical details of the time correct. Importantly, Fellowes engaged historians to ensure that the story of the rise of elite Black Americans during this time were being accurately portrayed through his character Peggy Scott. We also examine about the role of immigrants in this society, the architecture of these grand homes, the culture of religious freedom in Newport and the broader economy at the time. While we talk about the rise of these families and great wealth in America at the time, we also explore the fall of the Gilded Age and these grand summer cottages and the creation of the Preservation Society and its importance in maintaining these homes and in it this important period of American history. For lovers of history, Newport or the Gilded Age, this episode is for you! And if you haven't already, be sure to follow us on Instagram @TheInterviewWithLeslie and subscribe to the show so you never miss an episode.
In another of the podcast's #BigInterviews, former Newport County skipper and marauding midfielder Joss Labadie sat down with Ian and Jamie for a look back on his time at Rodney Parade. From the Great Escape and injuries, to cup runs and playoff finals, Joss opened up on that five-year period where he experienced everything there is to experience as a League Two captain. We're really grateful to Joss for his time, and for his honesty and candidness. The chat offers a fabulous insight into the inner workings of a football team. How do you manage contract negotiations when you're out with an ACL injury? Just HOW difficult is it to play Premier League opposition? How do you manage egos and cocky youngsters coming in from youth academies?Joss also shared intel on how footballers set themselves up for post-retirement, particularly when coaching and punditry are not options. Should five years' residency make a player eligible to play international football for that country? It's allowed under Fifa rules, but historically Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland have agreed not to take advantage of it. The Football Association of Wales, though, have been testing the waters to see if there is appetite for change. As it transpires, there isn't. And Iwan and Sam are in complete agreement with that. They also agree that Newport County deserve great credit for giving their season a completely different complexion with four successive wins, but a lacklustre start at Portsmouth by Cardiff comes under criticism. And Iwan takes great pleasure in returning to his Gwynedd roots with this week's pick of the week.
